Phosphate Mine Tailing Recycling in Membrane Filter Manufacturing: Microstructure and Filtration Suitability

Highly efficient ceramic membrane synthesized from sugar scum and fly ash as sustainable precursors for dyes removal

Recycling solid industrial wastes into valuable materials is always the priority solution in waste management. In this perspective, sugar scum and fly ash were used to produce an effective low-cost porous ceramic membrane. The impacts of the sintering temperature, amount of sugar scum, and sintering time on the properties of the prepared ceramic membrane were investigated and optimized using experimental design. A simultaneous rise in both the sintering temperature and the amount of sugar scum leads to a notable increase in porosity. Moreover, the simultaneous increase or decrease in the time and the amount of sugar scum causes a significant decrease in the compressive strength. The optimal conditions have been determined as a sintering temperature of 1197 °C, a sugar scum amount of 12.06 %, and a sintering time of 253 min. Under these conditions, the density, porosity, and compressive strength were found to be 2.16 g/cm³, 34.66 %, and 28.24 MPa, respectively. In addition, the obtained ceramic membrane has a water permeability of 2356.68 L/h m2 bar, a pore size in the range 0-4.5 μm, and excellent chemical resistance in both acidic and basic media. Finally, the performance of the prepared ceramic membrane was evaluated by the filtration of methylene blue. The results indicate that sugar scum and fly ash are suitable precursors to manufacture an effective ceramic membrane for the treatment of wastewater.

Research on Recycling of Phosphorus Tailings Powder in Open-Graded Friction Course Asphalt Concrete

The reuse in high-value materials is one of the important resource utilization approaches of phosphorus tailings. At present, a mature technical system has been formed on the reuse of phosphorus slag in building materials, and silicon fertilizers in the extraction of yellow phosphorus. But there is a lack of research on the high-value reuse of phosphorus tailings. In order to make safe and effective utilization of phosphorus tailing resources, this research concentrated on how to solve easy agglomeration and difficult dispersion of phosphorus tailing micro-powder, when it was recycled in road asphalt. In the experimental procedure, phosphorus tailing micro-powder is treated in two methods. One method is to directly add it with different contents in asphalt to form a mortar. Dynamic shear tests were used to explore the effect of phosphorus tailing micro-powder on the high-temperature rheological properties of asphalt influence mechanism of material service behavior. The other method is to replace the mineral powder in asphalt mixture. The effect of phosphate tailing micro-powder on the water damage resistance in open-graded friction course (OGFC) asphalt mixtures was illustrated, based on the Marshall stability test and the freeze-thaw split test. The research results show that the performance indicators of the modified phosphorus tailing micro-powder meet the requirements for mineral powder in road engineering. Compared with standard OGFC asphalt mixtures, the residual stability of immersion and freeze-thaw splitting strength were improved when replace the mineral powder. The residual stability of immersion increased from 84.70% to 88.31%, and freeze-thaw splitting strength increased from 79.07% to 82.61%. The results indicate that phosphate tailing micro-powder has a certain positive effect on the water damage resistance. These performance improvements can be attributed to the larger specific surface area for phosphate tailing micro-powder than ordinary mineral powder, which can effectively adsorb asphalt and form structural asphalt. The research results are expected to support the large-scale reuse of phosphorus tailing powder in road engineering.

The effect of government support on Bureaucracy, COVID-19 resilience and export intensity: Evidence from North Africa

The literature on the imperativeness of government support for firm survival since the onset of COVID-19 is vast, but scholars have scarcely considered the impact of such assistance on managers' time, nor the extent to which support measures induce resilience and export activity. Accordingly, this study assesses the impact of government support on (1) bureaucracy and (2) resilience using data from 535 Moroccan SMEs. It further evaluates the influence of resilience on direct versus indirect exports, and espouses the institutional voids, resource-based and strategy-creation view to explain the associations through a contingency lens. The results demonstrate that (1) government support increases bureaucracy which, (2) surprisingly triggers and enhances resilience. Furthermore, (3) resilience has a positive impact on direct exports but (4) adversely affects indirect exports. Theoretically, the findings acquiesce extant calls for measurement specificity in export performance. Practically, stakeholders' attention is drawn to the value of managers' time well spent.

Desulfurization of the Old Tailings at the Au-Ag-Cu Tiouit Mine (Anti-Atlas Morocco)

Tailings from the abandoned Tiouit mine site in Morocco are mainly composed of sulfides, hematite, and quartz. They contain 0.06–1.50 wt % sulfur, mostly in the form of pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. The tailings also contain gold (3.36–5.00 ppm), silver (24–37 ppm), and copper (0.06–0.08 wt %). Flotation tests were conducted to reprocess the tailings for Au, Ag, and Cu recovery, and at the same time to prevent acid mine drainage (AMD) generation through the oxidation of sulfide minerals, including pyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena. The flotation results confirmed that environmental desulfurization is effective at reducing the overall sulfide content in the tailings. The recovery of sulfides was between 69% and 75%, while Au recovery weight-yield was between 2.8% and 4.7%. The test that showed the best sulfur recovery rate and weight-yield was carried out with 100 g/t CuSO4 (sulfide activator) and 50 g/t of amyl xanthate (collector). The goal of this study was also to assess the remaining acid-generating potential (AP) and acid-neutralizing potential (NP) of the desulfurized tailing. The geochemical behavior of the initial tailings sample was compared to that of the desulfurized tailings using kinetic weathering cell tests. The leachates from the desulfurized tailings showed higher pH values than those from the initial tailings, which were clearly acid-generating. The residual acidity produced by the desulfurized tailings was most likely caused by the hydrolysis of Fe-oxyhydroxides.
