Three-Dimensional Meso-Structure-Based Model for Evaluating the Complex Permittivity of Asphalt Concrete

Microwave heating is an emerging alternative pretreatment method for road maintenance in cold seasons. The thermal behavior of asphalt pavement under microwave heating is mainly determined by the complex permittivity of the asphalt mixture. In this study, an innovative approach for calculating the complex permittivity of an asphalt mixture based on a three-dimensional meso-scale heterogeneous structure was proposed. A series of experiments was conducted to verify the accuracy of this approach. The effect of porosity, void size, moisture content and aggregate gradation on the complex permittivity for an asphalt mixture were computationally analyzed based on the validated approach. Moreover, the applicability of commonly used classical dielectric models was analyzed. The classical Lichtenecker-Rother (LR) dielectric model was modified on the basis of simulation data for various conditions. The results showed that the real part of the complex permittivity decreased with the increase in porosity. Some sudden change in the imaginary part of the complex permittivity was observed within the frequency range from 2.6 GHz to 3.9 GHz. A larger air void size would lead to a larger frequency at which sudden change occurs. The real part and imaginary part of the complex permittivity tend to be smaller when more coarse aggregates are replaced with fine aggregates. Both the real part and the imaginary part of the complex permittivity increase with higher moisture content due to the stronger dielectric property of water. Each 1% increase in moisture content would lead to about a 3~4% increase in the real part of the complex permittivity. The determination coefficients R2 for the real part and the imaginary part of the complex permittivity fitted by the modified Brown model were the maximum values, which were 0.922 and 0.980, respectively. The method presented in this study is useful for transportation agencies to optimize microwave heating during winter maintenance.

Evaluation of Cracking Resistance of SMA-13 Hot Recycling Asphalt Mixtures Reinforced by Basalt Fiber

In the context of green and low-carbon development, energy saving, and emission reduction, hot recycling technology (RT) has been researched, which is divided into hot central plant RT and hot in-place RT. However, due to the aged asphalt binders, the shortcomings of hot recycled asphalt mixtures have become apparent, as in comparison to new asphalt mixtures, their resistance to cracking was inferior and the cracking resistance deteriorated more rapidly. Therefore, it was very necessary to focus on the improvement of crack resistance of hot recycled asphalt mixtures. Basalt fiber has been proved to be able to effectively improve the comprehensive road performance of new asphalt mixtures. Therefore, this paper introduced basalt fiber to hot central plant recycled and hot in-place recycled asphalt mixtures, in order to improve the crack resistance of asphalt as a new type of fiber stabilizer. Firstly, six types of SMA-13 fiber asphalt mixtures were designed and prepared, i.e., hot mixtures with basalt fiber or lignin fiber, hot central plant recycled mixtures with basalt fiber or lignin fiber, and hot in-place recycled mixtures with basalt fiber or lignin fiber. Secondly, the trabecular bending test, low-temperature creep test, semi-circular bending test, and IDEAL-CT were used to comparatively study the changing patterns of low and intermediate temperature cracking resistance of hot recycled mixtures with conventional lignin fibers or basalt fibers. Finally, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation of the different cracking resistance indicators. The results show that the low and intermediate temperature cracking resistance of hot central plant recycled mixtures increased by 45.6% (dissipative energy ratio, Wd/Ws) and 74.8% (flexibility index, FI), respectively. And the corresponding cracking resistance of hot in-place recycled mixture increased by 105.4% (Wd/Ws) and 55.7% (FI). The trabecular bending test was more suitable for testing the low-temperature cracking resistance of hot recycled asphalt mixtures, while the IDEAL-CT was more suitable for testing the intermediate-temperature cracking resistance. The results can provide useful references for the utilization of basalt fiber in the hot recycling of SMA-13 asphalt mixtures.

Radiation and Radical Grafting Compatibilization of Polymers for Improved Bituminous Binders-A Review

This review scrutinizes current research on new methods for enhancing bituminous binder performance through radiation and radical grafting of polymer modifiers of bitumen. It investigates innovative methods, including using waste polymers as modifiers and applying radiation for polymer grafting, to overcome challenges like high costs, low aging resistance, and storage stability issues, of which separation of phases polymer/bitumen is the most significant obstacle. These advanced modification techniques promise sustainability through the decrease of the carbon footprint of transportation systems by improving the properties and durability of binders. Additionally, this review discusses the parameters and mechanistic aspects from a scientific perspective, shedding light on the underlying processes that contribute to the improved performance of modified bituminous binders.

Study of the Cold Curing Characteristics of Isocyanate-Modified Asphalt

Isocyanate esters are widely recognized for their superior curing capabilities. Leveraging this attribute, the current research formulated a modified cold-mixed asphalt blend using 4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). Tests and analyses of the MDI-modified asphalt with varying inclusion percentages of MDI revealed that a mixture containing 15% rock asphalt and 15% MDI-modified asphalt exhibited a more balanced, comprehensive performance. We also conducted an examination of the role and properties of MDI in asphalt modification using molecular dynamics simulations. The cold-curing properties of MDI-modified asphalt as compared to petroleum asphalt were evaluated based on its density, free volume analysis, cohesive energy density, and glass transition temperature. Implementing the LB-13 gradation-a cold-mixed asphalt gradation with a nominal particle size of 13.2 mm recommended by Chinese specifications-we prepared MDI-modified cold-mixed asphalt and carried out analyses of its mechanical characteristics, high-temperature performance, and water damage resistance. The results demonstrated that MDI-modified asphalt showcases excellent ductility, flexibility, and aging resistance, surpassing the performance of petroleum asphalt. The stability, high-temperature rutting, and water damage resistance of the MDI-modified cold-mixed asphalt exceeded the requirements for hot-mixed asphalt. This research provides theoretical and experimental support for isocyanate ester applications in asphalt engineering, presenting significant value for practical engineering applications.

Low-Temperature Crack Resistance of High-Content Rubber-Powder-Modified Asphalt Mixture under Freeze-Thaw Cycles

In order to study the modification mechanisms of a warm-mixing agent and high dosage on rubber-powder-modified asphalt, as well as the influence of salt freeze-thaw cycling on the mechanism of warm-mixed high-dosage-rubber-powder-modified asphalt, macro- and micro-experimental methods were used to analyze the low-temperature crack resistance performance of six types of rubber-powder-modified asphalt mixtures under salt freeze-thaw cycling. By using digital image processing (DIC) technology to record and analyze the loading processes of specimens in semicircular three-point bending (SCB) tests, combined with atomic force microscopy (AFM) tests, the low-temperature crack resistance of the asphalt mixtures was explored, and it was inferred that the micro-mechanical performance indicators of the asphalt were correlated with the low-temperature crack resistance performance indicators of the asphalt mixtures. The results indicate that the salt solution caused greater damage to the asphalt than water. The addition of more rubber powder improved the low-temperature cracking resistance of the asphalt mixtures. There was a significant correlation between the micro-mechanical properties of the asphalt and the low-temperature crack resistance of the asphalt mixtures, and a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMT) showed a stronger correlation with the strain derivative (E'(t)) than the adhesion force index. The SDYK-type warm-mixing agent had a better effect on the low-temperature cracking resistance of the asphalt mixtures than the EM-type warm-mixing agent.

Temperature Field Characterization of Iron Tailings Based on Microwave Maintenance Technology

Microwave maintenance technology, as a new development trend, can realize the environmentally noninvasive and rapid repair of asphalt pavement and gradually replace traditional maintenance methods. Iron tailings were used as a self-healing material in this study to investigate the temperature response matching of microwave maintenance technology. Firstly, the physical properties and the mechanism of iron tailings were elaborated through macroscopic physical index testing and microscopic X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Secondly, the applicability of aggregates to microwave heating was demonstrated by analyzing the temperature rise characteristics of the granules using infrared imaging. Then, the temperature field variation rules of the iron tailing asphalt mixture were summarized by microwave heating Marshall specimens. Finally, the road performance was assessed by conducting high-temperature dynamic stability, low-temperature tensile, water immersion Marshall, and freeze-thaw splitting tests. The experimental results showed that the iron tailings can be used as an aggregate for high-grade asphalt pavement and as the preferred aggregate for microwave maintenance technology. The iron tailings temperature field was radial from the inside out to provide different temperature response states for different pavement diseases, so the asphalt was dissolved and precipitated in a short time. The particle size of iron tailings was inversely proportional to the wave-absorbing heating rate, and the heating efficiency of the small particle size (0-4.75 mm) was the highest. The specimens doped with 4.75-13.2 mm iron tailings showed the best heating performance and road performance, with the average surface temperature of the specimens reaching 126.0 °C within 2 min. In summary, according to different disease types and construction needs, iron tailings can be used as an aggregate for asphalt pavement, providing an appropriate temperature field and improving the efficiency of the microwave maintenance of asphalt pavements.

Sensitivity and Reliability Analysis of Ultrasonic Pulse Parameters in Evaluating the Laboratory Properties of Asphalt Mixtures

The ultrasonic test is a promising non-destructive testing technique for evaluating the properties of asphalt mixtures. To investigate the applicability and reliability of ultrasonic testing technology (UTT) in evaluating the performance of asphalt mixtures, ultrasonic tests, indirect tensile tests, compression tests, and dynamic modulus tests were carried out at various temperatures. Subsequently, the distribution characteristics of ultrasonic traveling parameters for asphalt mixtures were analyzed. The variation of ultrasonic pulse velocity and amplitude in dry and wet states with temperature was studied. Then, the correlation between the ultrasonic parameters and both the volume parameters and the mechanical performance parameters of asphalt mixtures was revealed, and the functional relationship between ultrasonic pulse velocity and compressive strength was established. Finally, the reliability of predicting high-frequency dynamic modulus by ultrasonic velocity was verified. The laboratory tests and analysis results indicate that both ultrasonic pulse velocity and amplitude in dry and wet conditions show a decreasing trend with an increase in temperature. Ultrasonic parameters are greatly influenced by asphalt content and mineral aggregate content of 9.5~13.2 mm and 13.2~16 mm. The dynamic modulus at a high-frequency load can be predicted by using ultrasonic velocity, and predicting the results for OGFC and SMA mixtures deduced by using the UPV at a high-frequency load have higher reliability.

Research on Fracture Behavior of Fiber-Asphalt Mixtures Using Digital Image Correlation Technology

Many researchers use fiber to improve the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures, but research concerning the effects of fiber on fracture behavior is limited. The fracture behavior of asphalt mixtures with various fiber types (basalt fiber, glass fiber, and polyester fiber) and contents (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.5%) has been studied using the indirect tensile asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT) in conjunction with digital image correlation (DIC) technology. The evaluation indexes used in the test included crack initiation energy (Gif), crack energy (Gf), splitting tensile strength (RT), cracking tolerance index (CTindex), and the real-time tensile strain (Exx) obtained using digital image correlation technology. The results showed that despite the fiber type, the increase of fiber content resulted in first, an increase, and then, a decrease of the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures, indicating the presence of optimum fiber content-specifically, 0.4%, 0.3%, and 0.3% for basalt fiber, glass fiber, and polyester fiber, respectively. The development of real-time tensile strain, obtained based on digital image correlation technology, could be divided into two stages: slow-growth stage and rapid-expansion stage. In addition, asphalt mixture with basalt fiber presented the best cracking resistance at both the slow-growth and rapid-expansion stages. This research is helpful in understanding the effects of fiber type and content on the fracture behavior of asphalt mixtures and has certain reference significance for the application of fiber in asphalt mixtures.

Effect of Basalt Fiber Diameter on the Properties of Asphalt Mastic and Asphalt Mixture

In this study, basalt fiber having two types of diameters (16 μm and 25 μm) was selected and added to asphalt mastic and asphalt mixtures using different fiber proportions. The influences of fiber diameters and proportions on the properties of asphalt mastic and mixtures were studied. The adhesion behavior of the fiber-asphalt mastic (FAM) interface was evaluated by a monofilament pullout test, and the rheological properties of FAM were evaluated by temperature sweep, linear amplitude sweep, and bending beam rheological tests. In addition, the high-temperature stability, intermediate and low-temperature cracking resistance, and water stability of fiber-modified mixtures were studied by wheel tracking, ideal cracking, a low-temperature bending beam, and a water-immersed Marshall test. The results showed that the interface adhesion behavior between 16 μm fiber and asphalt mastic was more likely in the fiber failure mode at both -12 °C and 25 °C. Adding basalt fiber can significantly improve the high-temperature and fatigue properties of asphalt mastics. Moreover, 16 μm fiber had a better modifying effect on asphalt mastic than 25 μm fiber. The same enhancement trend can be observed in asphalt mixtures. Basalt fibers with 16 μm diameters can improve the high-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures more significantly. In addition, 16 μm fiber could sharply enhance the cracking performance of the mixtures at intermediate and low temperatures, while the enhancing effect of 25 μm fiber on the mixture is insignificant, though both diameters of the fibers have a minor effect on the water stability.

The Multi-Objective Optimization Design and Hydrothermal Performance Evaluation of Anhydrous Calcium Sulfate Whisker and Polyester Fiber Compound Modified Asphalt Mixture in Hot-Humid Areas

In hot and humid climates, asphalt pavements frequently encounter environmental factors such as elevated temperatures and rainfall, leading to rutting deformations and potholes, which can affect pavement performance. The primary objective of this study was to enhance the hydrothermal characteristics of asphalt mixtures through an investigation into the impact of anhydrous calcium sulfate whisker (ACSW) and polyester fiber (PF) on the hydrothermal properties of asphalt mixtures. In this paper, a central composite concatenation design (CCC) was employed to determine the optimal combination of ACSW and PF contents, as well as the asphalt aggregate ratio (AAR). Each influencing factor was assigned three levels for analysis. The evaluation indexes included dynamic stability, retained Marshall stability, and tensile strength ratio. Using the analysis methods of variance and gray correlation degree analysis, the hydrothermal properties of the asphalt mixture were examined in relation to the contents of ACSW, PF, and AAR based on the CCC results. Consequently, the optimal mix design parameters for composite modified asphalt mixture incorporating ACSW and PF were determined. The results indicated that the asphalt mixtures with hydrothermal qualities exhibited optimal performance in terms of 4.1% ARR, 11.84% ACSW, and 0.4% PF. The interaction between AAR and ACSW content had a greater effect on the dynamic stability and tensile strength ratio of the asphalt mixture, whereas the incorporation of ACSW and PF had a greater effect on the retained Marshall stability of the asphalt mixture. Among the three contributing factors, AAR exhibited the strongest relationship with the hydrothermal characteristics of the asphalt mixture, followed by the ACSW content; the correlation of PF content was the lowest. Therefore, to enhance the hydrothermal characteristics of the asphalt mixture, it is important to conduct a full evaluation of the constituents of ACSW and PF, along with the AAR in hot-humid regions.

Investigation of the Relationship between Permanent Deformation and Dynamic Modulus Performance for Bearing-Layer Asphalt Mixture

Of major concern is the lack of correlation between the material design and structural function of asphalt pavement in China. The objective of this paper is to identify the layer in asphalt pavement where permanent deformation occurs most seriously and to propose a control index for that layer's asphalt mixture. The permanent deformation of each layer was determined through the utilization of thickness measurements obtained from field cores. The results indicate that the reduction in thickness is more significant in the driving lane than in the ridge band and shoulder. This phenomenon can be attributed to the intensified densification and shearing deformation that arise from the combined impacts of recurrent axle loads and high temperatures. Compared to surface and base layers, the bearing layer is the primary area of concern for permanent deformation in asphalt pavement. Therefore, it is imperative to incorporate the ability of bearing-layer asphalt mixture to withstand permanent deformation as a crucial design parameter. The dynamic modulus of the bearing-layer asphalt mixture is significantly influenced by the type of asphalt, gradation, and asphalt content, compared to other design parameters. Based on the relationship established between dynamic modulus and dynamic stability, with creep rate as the intermediate term, a control standard was proposed to evaluate the permanent deformation of the bearing-layer asphalt mixture. This study can provide reasonable and effective guidance for prolonging pavement life and improving pavement performance.

Research on Fatigue-Healing Performance of Asphalt Mixture Based on the Semicircular Bending Test

In order to study the self-healing performance of macroscopic fractures of asphalt mixtures, semicircular bending (SCB) tests were used to test 90# base asphalt mixtures, SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) modified asphalt mixtures, and SBS + CR (Chloroprene Rubber) composite modified asphalt mixtures. The F-H-F (the asphalt mixture specimen was fatigued for a certain number of times, then healed under certain conditions, and then fatigued until destroyed) test was carried out, and the fatigue life recovery rate of the fatigue test before and after healing was defined as the healing index (HI). The gray correlation analysis method was used to judge the influence degree of influencing factors on fatigue-healing according to the correlation index. The results show the type of asphalt has the most significant influence on the healing ability of the asphalt mixture. In the case of complete healing, the fatigue-healing performance of the SBS + CR composite modified asphalt mixture was the best, followed by the SBS-modified asphalt mixture, and 90# base asphalt. When the healing temperature is close to the softening point of asphalt, the healing performance of 90# base asphalt is better when the healing temperature is low. When the healing time is longer, the healing performance is better, and there is an optimal healing time. The healing index decreased with the increase in the degree of damage. When the degree of damage is too large, the asphalt mixture will be difficult to heal.

Interlocking Evaluation of Mesoscopic Skeleton with the Compaction Degree of Hot-Mix Asphalt

Asphalt mixtures are multi-phase composites composed of aggregates, bitumen, mineral powders, and voids, and various structures are intertwined during the compaction process. Most of the traditional research focuses on the macro-scale domain, and it is difficult to obtain the internal structure of asphalt mixture in different compaction processes. With the continuous development of digital image technology, the influence of the meso-structure of the asphalt mixture on the compaction quality of the asphalt mixture has become a new means to evaluate the performance of the asphalt mixture. In this paper, different numbers of compactions are selected to represent different stages in the compaction process, the digital images of specimens in different compaction stages are obtained by industrial CT scanning technology. Then, the images are processed and reconstructed in three dimensions using improved image segmentation methods, and the position characteristics and geometric information of coarse aggregate are obtained by combining the Oriented Bounding Box (OBB). The meso-response characteristics of the skeleton structure of the asphalt mixture during compaction were studied. The influence of the internal structure of the mixture on the compaction quality of the mixture was obtained, which is of great significance for the study of improving the durability of the pavement. The results show that the "effective coordination number" (the number of aggregate particles that can transmit force in the skeleton structure) is greatly related to the aggregate size. With the compaction process, the centroid of coarse aggregate in the upper layer of the specimen reflects the overall downward movement trend. The inclination angle of the aggregate spindle tends to be in the range of 80°~100°; the anisotropic amplitude of the xy plane increases, and the direction of the aggregate spindle becomes more and more consistent. With the increase in the number of rotational compactions, these four parameters showed obvious rules, indicating that this meso-characteristic index could well characterize the compaction quality of the asphalt mixture in the compaction process.

Neural Network Aided Homogenization Approach for Predicting Effective Thermal Conductivity of Composite Construction Materials

Thermal conductivity is a fundamental material parameter involved in various infrastructure design guides around the world. This paper developed an innovative neural network (NN) aided homogenization approach for predicting the effective thermal conductivity of various composite construction materials. The 2-D meso-structures of dense graded asphalt mixture, porous asphalt mixture, and cement concrete were generated and divided into 2ⁿ × 2ⁿ square elements with specific thermal conductivity values. A two-layer feed-forward neural network with sigmoid hidden neurons and linear output neurons was built to predict the effective thermal conductivity of the 2 × 2 block. The Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm was used to train the network. By repeatedly using the neural network, the effective thermal conductivities of 2-D meso-structures were calculated. The accuracy of the above NN aided homogenization approach was validated with experiment, and various factors affecting the effective thermal conductivity were analyzed. The analysis results show that the accuracy of the NN aided approach is acceptable with relative errors of 1.92~4.34% for the dense graded asphalt mixture, 1.10~6.85% for the porous asphalt mixture, and 1.13~3.14% for the cement concrete. The relative errors for all the materials are lower than 5% when the heterogeneous structures are divided into 512 × 512 elements. Ignoring the actual material meso-structures may lead to significant errors (134.01%) in predicting the effective thermal conductivity of materials with high heterogeneity such as porous asphalt mixture. While proper simplification is acceptable for dense construction composite materials. The effective thermal conductivity of composite cement-asphalt mixtures increases with higher saturation of grouted material. However, the improvement effect of the high-conductive cement paste on the composite cement-asphalt mixtures could be significantly reduced when the cement paste concentrates at the bottom of the mixture. Cracked aggregates and segregation of material components tend to decrease the effective thermal conductivity of construction materials. The NN aided homogenization approach presented in this paper is useful for selecting the effective thermal conductivity of construction materials.

Identify the Micro-Parameters for Optimized Discrete Element Models of Granular Materials in Two Dimensions Using Hexagonal Close-Packed Structures

The widely used simple cubic-centered (SCC) model structure has limitations in handling diagonal loading and accurately representing Poisson's ratio. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a set of modeling procedures for granular material discrete element models (DEM) with high efficiency, low cost, reliable accuracy, and wide application. The new modeling procedures use coarse aggregate templates from an aggregate database to improve simulation accuracy and use geometry information from the random generation method to create virtual specimens. The hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure, which has advantages in simulating shear failure and Poisson's ratio, was employed instead of the SCC structure. The corresponding mechanical calculation for contact micro-parameters was then derived and verified through simple stiffness/bond tests and complete indirect tensile (IDT) tests of a set of asphalt mixture specimens. The results showed that (1) a new set of modeling procedures using the hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure was proposed and was proved to be effective, (2) micro-parameters of the DEM models were transit form material macro-parameters based on a set of equations that were derived based on basic configuration and mechanism of discrete element theories, and (3) that the results from IDT tests prove that the new approach to determining model micro-parameters based on mechanical calculation is reliable. This new approach may enable a wider and deeper application of the HCP structure DEM models in the research of granular material.

Evaluation of Bitumen Modification Using a Fast-Reacting SBS Polymer at a Low Modifier Percentage

The study presented in this paper investigates the application of asphalt bitumen modification using a fast-reacting SBS polymer at a low modifier percentage. The hypothesis is that a fast-reacting styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer that composes only 2% to 3% of the weight of the bitumen modification could extend the life of the pavement surfacing and pavement performance at relatively low input costs, increasing the net present value produced by the pavement during its life cycle. To confirm or refute this hypothesis, two types of road bitumens CA 35/50 and 50/70 were modified with low amounts of fast-reacting SBS polymer with the expectation of attaining properties similar to a 10/40-65 modified bitumen. For each type of unmodified bitumen, bitumen modification and comparative 10/40-65 modified bitumen, the following tests were conducted: needle penetration, softening point-ring and ball test method, and ductility test. The second part of the article focuses on a comparison of asphalt mixtures with different compositions of coarse-grain curves. For each mixture, complex modulus with varying temperatures and fatigue resistances are represented by the Wöhler diagram and compared. Based on in labo testing, the impact of the modification on pavement performance is evaluated. Life cycle changes for each type of modified and unmodified mixtures are quantified as road user costs, and attained benefits are compared with increased construction costs.

Effect of Phosphogypsum Based Filler on the Performance of Asphalt Mortar and Mixture

This study introduced phosphogypsum coupled with steel slag powder to prepare the phosphogypsum based filler (PF) for asphalt mixture. Penetration, penetration index, softening point, ductility, equivalent softening point, moisture stability of asphalt mortars with different steel slag powder content, filler-asphalt ratio, and PF content were studied. Mechanical properties of PF based asphalt mortar (P-AM) were then analyzed to determine the optimum steel slag content in PF. Overall desirability method was used to determine the optimum replacement ratio of PF content in limestone filler. Rheological properties of P-AM were also analyzed through dynamic shear rheometer. Volumetric performance, high-temperature performance, low-temperature performance, and moisture stability tests were carried out on PF based AC-20 asphalt mixture. Results showed that P-AM presented the optimum performance when the content of steel slag powder was 23% by mass of phosphogypsum. Fatigue and rutting factor of asphalt mortar were enhanced by PF. The optimum PF content in replacing limestone filler was 75% through overall desirability evaluation. PF developed the high-temperature performance and moisture stability of asphalt mixture. Additionally, volumetric and low-temperature performance were not significantly affected by PF. It is suggested that using PF which is based on phosphogypsum as a filler of asphalt mixture to partially replace traditional limestone filler was adequate.

Research on Recycling of Phosphorus Tailings Powder in Open-Graded Friction Course Asphalt Concrete

The reuse in high-value materials is one of the important resource utilization approaches of phosphorus tailings. At present, a mature technical system has been formed on the reuse of phosphorus slag in building materials, and silicon fertilizers in the extraction of yellow phosphorus. But there is a lack of research on the high-value reuse of phosphorus tailings. In order to make safe and effective utilization of phosphorus tailing resources, this research concentrated on how to solve easy agglomeration and difficult dispersion of phosphorus tailing micro-powder, when it was recycled in road asphalt. In the experimental procedure, phosphorus tailing micro-powder is treated in two methods. One method is to directly add it with different contents in asphalt to form a mortar. Dynamic shear tests were used to explore the effect of phosphorus tailing micro-powder on the high-temperature rheological properties of asphalt influence mechanism of material service behavior. The other method is to replace the mineral powder in asphalt mixture. The effect of phosphate tailing micro-powder on the water damage resistance in open-graded friction course (OGFC) asphalt mixtures was illustrated, based on the Marshall stability test and the freeze-thaw split test. The research results show that the performance indicators of the modified phosphorus tailing micro-powder meet the requirements for mineral powder in road engineering. Compared with standard OGFC asphalt mixtures, the residual stability of immersion and freeze-thaw splitting strength were improved when replace the mineral powder. The residual stability of immersion increased from 84.70% to 88.31%, and freeze-thaw splitting strength increased from 79.07% to 82.61%. The results indicate that phosphate tailing micro-powder has a certain positive effect on the water damage resistance. These performance improvements can be attributed to the larger specific surface area for phosphate tailing micro-powder than ordinary mineral powder, which can effectively adsorb asphalt and form structural asphalt. The research results are expected to support the large-scale reuse of phosphorus tailing powder in road engineering.

Review on Load Transfer Mechanisms of Asphalt Mixture Meso-Structure

Asphalt mixture is a skeleton filling system consisting of aggregate and asphalt binder. Its performance is directly affected by the internal load transfer mechanism of the skeleton filling system. It is significant to understand the load transfer mechanisms for asphalt mixture design and performance evaluation. The objective of this paper is to review the research progress of the asphalt mixture load transfer mechanism. Firstly, this paper summarizes the test methods used to investigate the load transfer mechanism of asphalt mixtures. Then, an overview of the characterization of load transfer mechanism from three aspects was provided. Next, the indicators capturing contact characteristics, contact force characteristics, and force chain characteristics were compared. Finally, the load transfer mechanism of asphalt mixtures under different loading conditions was discussed. Some recommendations and conclusions in terms of load transfer mechanism characterization and evaluation were given. The related work can provide valuable references for the study of the load transfer mechanism of asphalt mixtures.

Second Life for Plastic Fibre Waste Difficult to Recover: Partial Replacement of the Binder in Asphalt Concrete Mixtures by Dry Incorporation

In previous studies, different additives and modifiers have been studied to improve the properties of asphalt concrete mixtures, whose main failures are plastic deformation and cracking. In this research, the improvement of the properties of asphalt concrete mixtures were investigated by introducing residual plastics as a substitute for virgin bitumen, which improves the sustainability of the mixtures. Furthermore, the results obtained from these new mixtures were compared with a mixture designed with polymer-modified bitumen (PMB). Ten experimental designs were tested with three types of waste fibre plastics from a municipal solid waste treatment plant and two percentages of bitumen replacement (15% and 25%). The experimental testing plan included air void characterization, moisture sensitivity, stiffness and fatigue resistance, among others. An increase of approximately 5% in voids could be observed when introducing the plastic material and therefore some tests were carried out to over-compact the specimens. The results showed an improvement in the mechanical performance of the experimental mixtures, highlighting the resistance against plastic deformations, which even reached similar values to the mixtures made with PMB.

Influence of Fiber Type and Dosage on Tensile Property of Asphalt Mixture Using Direct Tensile Test

In engineering practice, fiber addition is a frequently used method to improve the tensile property of asphalt mixture. However, the optimum fiber type and dosage have not been determined by direct tensile tests. In this paper, monotonic tensile tests were conducted on three kinds of stone mastic asphalt (SMA13) mixtures, that is, granular-lignin-fiber-reinforced SMA (GFSMA), flocculent-lignin-fiber-reinforced SMA (FFSMA), and basalt-fiber-reinforced SMA (BFSMA) at different fiber dosages to probe the influence of fiber dosage on their tensile mechanical indexes (tensile strength, ultimate strain, elastic modulus, and strain energy density) and to determine the optimum dosage of each kind of fiber. The results showed that with the elevation of fiber dosage, the tensile strength, elastic modulus, and strain energy density of all three kinds of asphalt mixtures increased first and then decreased, while the ultimate strain increased constantly. The optimum dosage was 0.50 wt%, 0.45 wt%, and 0.50 wt% for granular lignin fiber, flocculent lignin fiber, and basalt fiber, respectively. On this basis, strain-controlled direct tensile fatigue tests were conducted on the three kinds of asphalt mixtures at the corresponding optimum fiber dosage. The results indicated that asphalt mixture reinforced with 0.50 wt% granular lignin fiber exhibited ideal direct tensile fatigue performance with respect to fatigue life and accumulative dissipated energy. Therefore, granular lignin fiber is recommended as the favorable fiber type, and its optimum dosage is 0.50 wt%. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that the essence of the impact of fiber dosage and type on the tensile property of SMA is whether the reinforcement effect on the mixture matrix outweighs the negative effect of the defects between fiber and mixture matrix, or whether the reverse applies.

Pavement Performance Investigation of Asphalt Mixtures with Plastic and Basalt Fiber Composite (PB) Modifier and Their Applications in Urban Bus Lanes Using Statics Analysis

A new type of plastic and basalt fiber composite (PB) modifier, which is composed of waste plastic and basalt fiber using a specific process, was used for bus lanes to address severe high-temperature deformation diseases due to the heavy loads of buses. The dense gradations of asphalt mixture with a nominal maximum aggregate size of 13.2 mm (AC-13) and 19 mm (AC-20) were selected to fabricate asphalt mixtures. The impact of the modifier PB on the high-temperature rutting resistance, low-temperature crack resistance, and water damage resistance was investigated experimentally. The experimental results showed that adding the modifier PB could enhance the rutting resistance and water damage resistance of asphalt mixtures significantly while maintaining the low-temperature crack resistance. Then, PB-modified asphalt mixtures of AC-13 and AC-20 were employed into a typical pavement structure of a bus lane in Yangzhou city, China, and three types of designed pavement structures were proposed. On this basis, statics analyses of all of the designed structures were performed using the finite element method. The statics analyses revealed that, compared with the standard axle load, the actual over-loaded axle made the pavement structure of the bus lane suffer a 30% higher stress and vertical deformation, leading to accelerated rutting damage on the bus lanes. The addition of the modifier PB could make the pavement structure stronger and compensate for the negative effect caused by the heavy axle load. These findings can be used as a reference for the pavement design of urban bus lanes.

Optimization Design of Asphalt Mixture Composite Reinforced with Calcium Sulfate Anhydrous Whisker and Polyester Fiber Based on Response Surface Methodology

In order to improve the properties of calcium sulfate anhydrous whisker (ACSW) and polyester fiber composite reinforced asphalt mixture (ACPRA) to meet the service requirements of pavement materials in low-temperature environments, the central composite circumscribed design (CCC), a kind of response surface methodology, was chosen to optimize the design parameters. Three independence variables, asphalt aggregate ratio, ACSW content, and polyester fiber content were adopted to evaluate the design parameters. Four responsive variables, air voids, Marshall stability, splitting tensile strength, and failure tensile strain, were chosen to study the volumetric and mechanical characteristics, and the low-temperature behavior of ACPRA by the Marshall test and indirect tensile test at -10 °C. The results showed that, taking low-temperature behavior optimization as the objective, the CCC method was practicable to optimize design of ACPRA, and the optimization design parameters were asphalt aggregate ratio of 4.0%, ACSW content of 10.8%, and polyester fiber content of 0.4%. Furthermore, the impact of three independence variables interactions on four response variables was also discussed, and it was identified that the interaction between asphalt aggregate ratio and ACSW content, and between asphalt aggregate ratio and polyester fiber content, has greater bearing on the splitting tensile strength and failure tensile strain of APCRA. Meanwhile, ACSW and polyester fiber enhancing the low-temperature behavior of APCRA was primarily connected with their contents.

Use of the Modified Ramberg-Osgood Material Model to Predict Dynamic Modulus Master Curves of Asphalt Mixtures

Dynamic modulus master curves are usually constructed by using sigmoid functions, but the coefficients of these functions are not independent of each other. For this reason, it is not possible to clearly identify their physical mean. Another way of describing the dynamic modulus master curves is to choose the Ramberg-Osgood (RAMBO) material model, which is also well-suited for modelling the cyclic behaviour of soils. The Ramberg-Osgood model coefficients are completely independent of each other, so the evaluation of the fitted curve is simple and straightforward. This paper deals with the application of the Ramberg-Osgood material model compared to the usual techniques for constructing a master curve, determining the accuracy in describing the material behaviour of asphalt mixtures, and seeking any surplus information that cannot be derived by traditional techniques. Because the dynamic modulus and phase angle master curves are strictly related, in the present study, the asymmetric bell-shaped frequency curve of Toranzos was used to describe the phase angle for four types of asphalt mixtures (RmB, PmB, RA, and NB). The results show that the RAMBO model is a good alternative to the sigmoid function in describing the master curve of the dynamic modulus. We successfully used the Toranzos asymmetric bell-shaped frequency curve to describe the phase angle master curve. We also found a promising relationship between the independent RAMBO model parameters and the physical properties of the investigated binders, but this requires further research.

Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Mixture Design on Anti-Skid Surfacing for Field Testing High-Speed Vehicles on Pavements

Fiber can absorb asphalt binder and therefore reinforce and stabilize the asphalt mixture structure and also prevent the asphalt from the leaking, which occurs in the process of mixing and transport. In this study, three kinds of fiber (polyester fiber, polypropylene fiber, and lignin fiber) are used to evaluate the relationship between the fiber types and mechanic performance of SMA-13 fiber asphalt mixture, which is specially designed for field tests of high-speed vehicles on pavements. The micro-surface characteristics of fiber and aggregates were studied by SEM and image analysis. Marshall stability and splitting strength were used to measure the properties of the asphalt mixture. In addition, a field test, including measures for curve-section edge, curve-section center, straight-section edge, and straight-section center, was conducted to evaluate the skid resistance of the high-speed vehicles that test field pavement. The results show that the Marshall stabilities of asphalt mixture with three kinds of fibers have been improved, whereas the stability of asphalt mixture prepared by polypropylene fiber and polyester fiber particularly increased before immersion. Among the three kinds of fiber asphalt mixtures, the polyester fiber asphalt mixture has enhanced water susceptibility. Skid resistance in the field test indicated that high skid resistance and good surface-texture depth were achieved.

The Influence of Mortar's Poisson Ratio and Viscous Properties on Effective Stiffness and Anisotropy of Asphalt Mixture

This paper presents the results of a research study and analysis conducted to determine the degree of anisotropy of asphalt concrete in terms of its initial elastic properties. The analysis of asphalt concrete was focused on determining the effective constrained stiffness modulus in three mutually perpendicular directions based on the finite element method. The internal structure of the asphalt concrete was divided into the mortar phase and the mineral aggregate phase. Static creep tests using the Bending Beam Rheometer were conducted for the mortar phase to fit the rheological model. The aggregate arrangement and orientation were analysed using an image analytical technique for the mineral phase. The Finite Element Method (FEM) meshes were prepared based on grey images with an assumption of plane strain in 2D formulation. Using the FEM model, the tension/compression tests using selected characteristic directions were conducted, and the effective constrained stiffness moduli were estimated. This study showed a dominant horizontal direction for all coarse aggregates resulting from the normal force of the road roller and paving machines during laying and compaction on a road site. Depending on the values of the mortar's mechanical parameters and the load direction, the effective stiffness modulus might differ by ±20%. Based on the FEM analysis, this result was proven and commented on through an effective directional modulus evaluation and a presentation of internal stress distribution. Depending on the shape and orientation of the aggregates, it was possible to observe local "stress bridging" (transferring stresses from aggregate to aggregate when contacting). Moreover, the rheological properties of the mortar were considered by assuming two limiting situations (instantaneous and relaxed moduli), determining the bands of all possible solutions. In the performed FEM analysis, the influence of the Poisson ratio was also considered. The analysed asphalt concrete tends to be isotropic when the Poisson's mortar ratio is close to the value of 0.5, which agrees with the physical expectations. The obtained results are limited to particular asphalt concrete and should not be extrapolated to other asphalt mixture types without prior analysis.

Study on the Extraction of CT Images with Non-Uniform Illumination for the Microstructure of Asphalt Mixture

An adaptive image-processing method for CT images of asphalt mixture is proposed in this paper. Different methods are compared according to the error analysis calculated between the real gradation and 3D reconstruction gradation. As revealed by the test results, the adaptive image-processing method was effective in carrying out different brightness homogenization processes for each image. The Wiener filter with 7 × 7 size filter was able to produce a better noise reduction effect without compromising image sharpness. Among the three methods, the adaptive image-processing method performed best in the accuracy of coarse aggregate recognition, followed by the ring division method and the global threshold segmentation method. The error of the gradation extracted by the adaptive image-processing method was found to be lowest compared with the real gradation. For a variety of engineering applications, the developed method helps to improve the analysis of CT images of asphalt mixtures.

Study on the Performance of Steel Slag and Its Asphalt Mixture with Oxalic Acid and Water Erosion

The reuse of steel slag, a large-scale solid waste from steel production, has good social and environmental benefits. The application of a steel slag asphalt mixture is mainly hindered by its volume expansion in water. The expansion of steel slag can be inhibited by oxalic acid. The expansion rate and adhesion of steel slag were investigated, and the immersion stability of steel slag and its asphalt mixture was evaluated by water erosion. By means of XRD, XRF, TG, SEM, etc., the influence mechanism of oxalic acid and water erosion on the properties of steel slag and its asphalt mixture was discussed. The results show that oxalic acid can not only inhibit the expansion of steel slag but also improve its crush resistance, with a reduction in the expansion rate of steel slag by 53%. Oxalic acid is able to leach alkaline metal elements, reducing its adhesion with asphalt. After 10 days of water erosion, the rutting stability and bending crack resistance of the treated steel slag mixture decreased by 37% and 43.2%, respectively. Calcium oxalate is generated on the surface of treated steel slag, which improves the surface compactness, effectively inhibits the expansion of steel slag caused by water erosion, and improves the performance of steel slag and its asphalt mixture. Water erosion can accelerate the hydration and shedding of calcium-containing substances on the surface of steel slag, reduce the adhesion of steel slag, and lead to degradation in the performance of steel slag and its asphalt mixture. Oxalic acid is able to effectively inhibit the expansion of steel slag, and the treated steel slag can be used as recycled aggregate in asphalt mixture, effectively solving the problems of road aggregate deficiency and environmental pollution caused by steel slag.

Long-Term Performance Evolution of RIOHTrack Pavement Surface Layer Based on DMA Method

Asphalt mixture is a typical viscoelastic material, and its road performance will change with the action of environment and load during actual service. This study conducted experimental research on the surface course asphalt mixture of three categories and six typical structures of RIOHTrack based on the Dynamic Mechanical Analysis method. Moreover, this study explored the performance evolution law of asphalt mixture under the coupling action of load and environment in the process of loading from 0 million to 54 million standard axle times. Results demonstrated that the phase transition characteristic temperature of the surface course materials of the three types of typical structures showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the accumulation of load and environmental effects, indicating the presence of two stages of the dual coupling effect of environmental aging and load rolling on the asphalt mixture during service. In addition, the results suggested that the phase transition characteristic temperature, modulus, and phase angle of the surface layer materials have obvious material differences and structure dependencies.

A Design Method of Styreneic Methyl Copolymers Normal Temperature Modified Asphalt Mixture Based on Performance Balance

The objective of this research was to develop a solution for the deterioration effect on the high-temperature rutting performance and water stability of SMC. This research proposed a method for designing an SMC normal temperature modified asphalt mixture based on the existing findings, experimental research and the performance balance. First, the power function curve model of the aggregate gradation was put forward. The 0.075 mm, 4.75 mm and nominal maximum particle size were the key points of the aggregate gradation, and their passing rate was about 6%, 30%, and 95% respectively. Then, on the basis of the quadratic curve model, a method for determination of the optimum asphalt aggregate ratio of SMC normal temperature modified asphalt mixture was put forward, considering the skeleton-density structure. Last, rutting tests, small beam bending tests, freeze-thaw split tests, permeability coefficient tests, texture depth tests and pavement roughness tests were conducted, and the test results all met the performance requirements of the specifications for the construction of highway asphalt pavement in China perfectly, especially the high-temperature and water stability properties, which indicated that the design method for SMC normal temperature modified asphalt mixtures based on performance balance presented in this paper was reasonable and practical.

Reducing Compaction Temperature of Asphalt Mixtures by GNP Modification and Aggregate Packing Optimization

Compaction of hot mix asphalt (HMA) requires high temperatures in the range of 125 to 145 °C to ensure the fluidity of asphalt binder and, therefore, the workability of asphalt mixtures. The high temperatures are associated with high energy consumption, and higher NOx emissions, and can also accelerate the aging of asphalt binders. In previous research, the authors have developed two approaches for improving the compactability of asphalt mixtures: (1) addition of Graphite Nanoplatelets (GNPs), and (2) optimizing aggregate packing. This research explores the effects of these two approaches, and the combination of them, on reducing compaction temperatures while the production temperature is kept at the traditional levels. A reduction in compaction temperatures is desired for prolonging the paving window, extending the hauling distance, reducing the energy consumption for reheating, and for reducing the number of repairs and their negative environmental and safety effects, by improving the durability of the mixtures. A Superpave asphalt mixture was chosen as the control mixture. Three modified mixtures were designed, respectively, by (1) adding 6% GNP by the weight of binder, (2) optimizing aggregate packing, and (3) combining the two previous approaches. Gyratory compaction tests were performed on the four mixtures at two compaction temperatures: 135 °C (the compaction temperature of the control mixture) and 95 °C. A method was proposed based on the gyratory compaction to estimate the compaction temperature of the mixtures. The results show that all the three methods increase the compactability of mixtures and thus significantly reduce the compaction temperatures. Method 3 (combining GNP modification and aggregate packing optimization) has the most significant effect, followed by method 1 (GNP modification), and method 2 (aggregate packing optimization).

Preparation and Performance Analysis of Ceramsite Asphalt Mixture with Phase-Change Material

In this paper, phase-change material (PCM) and ceramsite were used to increase the heat resistance of the asphalt mixture. The ceramsite asphalt mixture with PCM can bring a specific cooling effect to the road surface and alleviate the rapid deterioration at high temperature. Two phase-change materials, PCM-43 and PCM-48, were compared and selected as the heat absorption material of the asphalt mixture. It is found that PCM-43 has better thermal stability, temperature regulation performance, higher enthalpy value, and a less adverse effect on the rheological properties of asphalt. According to the road performance of the asphalt mixture, it suggests that the maximum content of ceramsite is 40%. The specific heat capacity of asphalt mixtures was studied by the method of the insulation bucket test, and the thermal conductivity coefficient of asphalt mixtures was tested by a thermal conductivity instrument. The results show that the specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture can be reduced by adding PCM and ceramsite. The effect of ceramsite asphalt concrete with PCM on the temperature field of road structure was further analyzed by finite element method. Due to the thermal resistance of ceramsite in the upper layer, the cooling range and depth in the middle and lower surface layers can be improved. Meanwhile, the heat absorption of phase-change material can alleviate the heating phenomenon of the upper layer. Therefore, ceramsite asphalt concrete with PCM is effective for decreasing the high temperatures in the asphalt pavements.

Crushing Characteristics of Coarse Aggregates for Asphalt Mixtures under Simulated Laboratory Compaction Loads and Repeated Traffic Loads

The crushing characteristics of coarse aggregates for asphalt concrete were investigated under static and dynamic aggregate crushing value tests (ACVTs). The effect of various compaction loads was also examined by using a Marshall hammer, gyratory compactor and steel roller. Six types of coarse aggregates were tested, including basalt aggregate, steel slag, limestone aggregate, marble aggregate, recycled concrete aggregate and slightly weathered limestone aggregate. Test results indicate that static ACVT failed to reflect the crushing behavior of coarse aggregates under traditional traffic and compaction loads. The type of aggregate strongly influenced the crushing resistance, independent of type of load. The compaction loads simulated by using a Marshall hammer, gyratory compactor and steel roller resulted in a high aggregate breakage ratio and can distinguish the coarse aggregates with high crushing susceptibility. The crushing resistance was evaluated by using various crushing parameters and the corresponding critical value of these parameters was established. Gyratory compactor compaction resulted in more serious aggregate crushing when compared to Marshall hammer and steel roller compaction. Finite element modelling results on roller compaction and Marshall hammer compaction are in agreement with the aggregate crushing results. The aggregate crushing mechanism was found to be controlled by the fracture mode; the contribution of the attrition and abrasion modes was relatively small. When coarse aggregates with low crushing resistance are considered for the use for asphalt mixture, proper compaction is proved to be vital to prevent excessive aggregate breakage during mixture preparation and construction.

Effect of Winter Road Maintenance on the Asphalt Road Surface-Experience in Slovakia and the Czech Republic

The properties of asphalt mixtures and the quality of their execution are key factors for their service life and durability in the pavement structure. This research aims to study the effect of deicing chemicals (sodium chloride, NaCl) on asphalt mixtures in laboratory conditions to know the changes in properties when the samples were loaded with a different number of freeze-thaw cycles. The behavior of the standardly used asphalt mixtures and bitumen binders was verified by the exposure to sodium chloride solution (20 g/L NaCl). In the first part of the experiment, penetration, elastic recovery, and softening point tests were performed for paving grade bitumen 50/70 and 70/100, and polymer-modified bitumen PMB 25/55-60. Furthermore, asphalt concrete (AC 11) mixtures with different air voids were subjected to 25, 50, and 75 freeze-thaw cycles to determine the effect on the service life of the pavement structure. Following the Czech standard, CSN 73 6161, and the TP 170 regulation for the design of asphalt pavements, the Marshall test and the stiffness modulus were determined for all asphalt samples. The obtained results show a negative effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the properties of asphalt concrete surface course mixtures and bitumen.

Self-Healing Properties of Asphalt Concrete with Calcium Alginate Capsules Containing Different Healing Agents

Calcium alginate capsules encapsulating rejuvenator are a promising self-healing technology for asphalt pavement, but the effects of different healing agents on the self-healing performance of asphalt concrete has not been considered. In view of this, this paper aimed at exploring the effects of calcium alginate capsules containing different healing agents on the self-healing properties of asphalt concrete. Three types of capsules with sunflower oil, waste cooking oil and commercial rejuvenator were fabricated via the orifice-coagulation bath method and the interior structure, mechanical strength, thermal stability and oil content of the prepared capsules were characterized. The healing levels of asphalt mixtures with different capsules under different loading cycles and stress levels were evaluated. Furthermore, the saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes (SARA) fractions and rheological property of extracted asphalt binder within test beams with different capsules after different loading conditions were assessed. The results indicated that all the three types of capsules meet the mechanical and thermal requirement of mixing and compaction of asphalt mixtures. The healing levels of test beams containing vegetable oil capsules were higher than that of waste cooking oil capsules and industrial rejuvenator capsules. The strength recovery ratio and fracture energy recovery ratio of test beams with vegetable oil capsules reached 82.8% and 96.6%, respectively, after 20,000 cycles of compressive loading at 1.4 MPa. The fracture energy recovery ratio of the waste cooking oil capsules also reached as high as 90%, indicating that waste cooking oil can be used as the healing agent of calcium alginate capsules to improve the self-healing property of asphalt mixture. This work provides a significant guide for the selection of healing agent for self-healing capsules in the future.

A Comprehensive Study on the Rejuvenation Efficiency of Compound Rejuvenators for the Characterization of the Bituminous Binder, Mortar, and Mixture

This study aims to comprehensively investigate the rejuvenation efficiency of various self-developed compound rejuvenators on the physical, mechanical, and aging properties of aged bitumen, asphalt mortar, and mixture. The results revealed that the restoration capacity of vacuum distilled-oil rejuvenators on high-and-low temperature performance-grade of aged bitumen is more significant. In contrast, an aromatic-oil based rejuvenator is good at enhancing low-temperature grade and aging resistance. Moreover, the temperature and time of the curing conditions for mixing recycling of asphalt mixture were optimized as 150 °C and 120 min. Furthermore, the sufficient anti-rutting, structural stability, and moisture resistance of recycled asphalt mixture affirmed the rejuvenation efficiency of compound rejuvenators.

Reliability of Calculation of Dynamic Modulus for Asphalt Mixtures Using Different Master Curve Models and Shift Factor Equations

To develop a mechanistic-empirical pavement design system for Norwegian conditions, this paper evaluates the influence of the adoption of different models and shifting techniques on the determination of dynamic modulus master curves of asphalt mixtures. Two asphalt mixture types commonly used in Norway, namely Asphalt Concrete (AC) and Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) containing neat bitumen and polymer-modified bitumen, were prepared by the roller compactor, and their dynamic moduli were determined by the cyclic indirect tensile test. The dynamic modulus master curves were constructed using the standard logistic sigmoidal model, a generalized logistic sigmoidal model and the Christensen–Anderson–Marasteanu model. The shifting techniques consisted of log-linear, quadratic polynomial function, Arrhenius, William–Landel–Ferry and Kaelble methods. The absolute error, normalised square error and goodness-of-fit statistics encompassing standard error ratio and coefficient of determination were used to appraise the models and shifting methods. The results showed that the standard logistic sigmoidal model and the Williams–Landel–Ferry equation had the most suitable fits for the specimens tested. The asphalt mixtures containing neat bitumen had a better fit than the ones containing polymer-modified bitumen. The Kaelble equation and log-linear equation led to similar results. These findings provide a relevant recommendation for the mechanistic-empirical pavement design system.

Method for the Evaluation of the Homogeneity of Asphalt Mixtures by 2-Dimensional Image Analysis

In order to evaluate the homogeneity of asphalt mixture quantitatively, the distribution characteristic of internal phases of asphalt mixture were identified based on digital image processing technique and stereology theory, and the homogeneity coefficient (i.e., K) was proposed. At the same time, the trend of variation and reliability of homogeneity of asphalt mixture were analyzed by changing the nominal maximum aggregate size, aggregate gradation and asphalt content. The results suggest that the homogeneity of asphalt mixture could be comprehensively described using DIP technique combined with stereology theory. The smaller the K, the better the distribution homogeneity of the asphalt mixture. An improvement in the homogeneity of an asphalt mixture is achieved with the decrease of the nominal maximum aggregate size and a finer aggregate gradation. The asphalt content corresponding to the optimal homogeneity of the internal structure of asphalt mixture specimen is the optimum asphalt content. According to the experimental study, the suggested values of the homogeneity coefficient were given, which provides theoretical support to control the construction quality of the hot mixture asphalt.

Effects of Freeze-Thaw Cycles on the Internal Voids Structure of Asphalt Mixtures

Freeze-thaw cycle is one of the main distresses of asphalt pavement, and the law of freeze-thaw damage has always been an important topic. In this paper, X-ray computed tomography (CT) of asphalt mixture before and after freezing and thawing was carried out, and its two-dimensional (2D) digital image was recognized. Firstly, the eigenvalues of internal voids of asphalt mixture are extracted. Then the distribution of internal voids was analyzed. Finally, the evolution law of internal voids was summarized. The research results show that the characteristic mean value of the 9th cycle is the irreversible limit of freeze-thaw damage, and the non-resilience after the large void area increases is the fundamental reason for the accumulation of freeze-thaw damage. The source of void damage shifts from large voids to small voids, and the middle-stage is a critical stage of freeze-thaw damage. This work quantitatively evaluates the internal freeze-thaw damage process of asphalt mixture, and a morphological theory of the evolution of void damage based on an equivalent ellipse is proposed, which is helpful for better understanding the freezing-thawing damage law of asphalt pavement.

Influence of Type of Filler and Bitumen on the Mechanical Performance of Asphalt Mortars

This article presents a new methodology of analysis based on a fast-running experimental procedure to characterise the mechanical response of asphalt mortars in terms of stiffness, ductility, and fatigue resistance. This was achieved using the DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analyser) three-point bending configuration. The study was carried out by considering the employment of different types of fillers such cement and CaCO₃ and different types of binders such as conventional asphalt binder (B35/50) or modifided polymer-modified bitumen (PMB 25/55–65). From the results of this study, the filler was found to have a greater influence on the stiffness and ductility of the asphalt material, while bitumen had a higher effect on the fatigue life of the asphalt mortar. Fatigue life was observed to increase with the use of a polymer-modified binder, while a lower degree of permanent deformation and higher bearing capacity achieved by the use of cement instead of calcium carbonate as active fillers.

Aggregate Geometrical Features and Their Influence on the Surface Properties of Asphalt Pavement

Aggregate geometrical features directly affect asphalt pavement surface properties, which further affect the resistance to skidding of a road surface. In order to establish a relationship between the aggregate geometrical features and pavement surface properties, this paper employs an aggregate geometric characteristic evaluation system (AGCES) to describe the form property, angularity, and surface texture of aggregate particles. The geometrical feature parameters of 15 different aggregates were examined by AGCES and the corresponding surface properties of asphalt pavement prepared from the mentioned aggregates were evaluated by sand patch method, 2-Dimension Image-based Texture Analysis Method (2D-ITAM) and Walking Friction Tester (WFT), respectively. The relationships between the pavement surface property parameters and the aggregate geometric characteristic parameters studied were developed by the Levenberg-Marquarat and universal global optimization (LM-UGO). The results show that the calculated geometric characteristic parameters are in agreement with traditional manual measurement results. The pavement surface properties are significantly influenced by aggregate angularity and aggregate surface texture. Regression relationships were established to predict pavement surface properties from the aggregate geometrical features.

The Relationship between Poisson's Ratio Index and Deformation Behavior of Asphalt Mixtures Tested through an Optical Fiber Bragg Grating Strain Sensor

Flow-rutting is the main distress leading asphalt pavement to undergo premature maintenance, and is produced by the rapid accumulation of shear deformation in asphalt layers under high temperature and heavy loads. The excessive permanent deformation of the asphalt mixture at high temperature is related to the decrease of the material’s stability during the temperature increase and an unfavorable stress state, e.g., low confining pressure and high shear stress, which eventually leads to significant nonlinear viscoplastic behavior. In this research, dynamic modulus tests and repeated loading tests were carried out at 35 °C and 50 °C to analyze the deformation response of materials under a strain amplitude of <200 με and 400~500 μεs, respectively. Based on the in-lab repeated loading tests, the total deformation of the asphalt mixture in each loading and rest cycle was divided into three parts, being elastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic strain, and the measurement of the axial and lateral strain of cylindrical samples was realized with the aid of optical fiber Bragg grating strain sensors. It was found that the experimental index of the ratio between lateral strain and longitudinal strain (RLSLS), derived, but distinguished, from Poisson’s ratio defined limited in elastic strain, can characterize the deformation in viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviors of the mixes. Furthermore, the indices of dynamic modulus, phase angle, complex Poisson’s ratio, stiffness, and creep rate of four types of mixes containing different volcanic ash fillers and asphalt binders at 35 °C and 50 °C were systematically analyzed by the jointed experiments of modified dynamic modulus tests and repeated loading tests, and their consistent trending to the RLSLS index was obtained.

Effect of Ageing on Self-Healing Properties of Asphalt Concrete Containing Calcium Alginate/Attapulgite Composite Capsules

Calcium alginate capsules within asphalt concrete can gradually release interior asphalt rejuvenator under cyclic loading to repair micro cracks and rejuvenate aged asphalt in-situ. However, asphalt pavement will become aged due to environmental and traffic factors during the service period. In view of this, this paper investigated the effect of ageing on the healing properties of asphalt concrete containing calcium alginate/attapulgite composite capsules under cyclic loading. The capsules were fabricated using the orifice-bath method and the morphological structure, mechanical strength, thermal stability, oil release ratios and healing levels of capsules in fresh, short-term ageing and long-term ageing asphalt concrete were explored. The results indicated that the different ageing treatments would not damage the multi-chamber structure nor decrease the mechanical strength of capsules but would induce the capsules release oil prematurely. The premature oil released from capsules in turn can offset the ageing effect owing to ageing treatment. The short-term ageing and long-term ageing plain asphalt mixtures gained strength recovery ratios of 39.3% and 34.2% after 64,000 cycles of compression loading, while the strength recovery ratios of short-term ageing and long-term ageing asphalt mixtures containing capsules were 63.5% and 54.8%, respectively.

Meso- and Macro-Mechanical Analysis of the Frost-Heaving Effect of Void Water on Asphalt Pavement

In cold regions, many types of structural damages are caused by the frost heaving of asphalt pavements. Hence, it is important to quantitatively determine the frost-heaving effect of asphalt pavement using a mechanical method to control frost-heaving damage. In this study, first, the internal voids of the asphalt mixture were regarded as a single void, and the water phase transition generating the freezing water in the voids was simulated using a simplified hollow sphere model to create a uniform internal pressure. Second, the prediction equation of the equivalent linear expansion coefficient was proposed by taking the phase transition of water in the saturated asphalt mixture voids into account. A step function was used during the phase transition of water to determine the sudden change in the equivalent linear expansion coefficient, heat capacity, density, and thermal conductivity. Finally, the typical cooling conditions were simulated with the water phase transition and the nonwater phase transition. The experimental results showed that the proposed model could accurately simulate the effect of frost heaving. Higher stress and strain were generated on the surface and in the interior of the pavement, and the positions of maximum stress and strain occurred on the pavement surface under the frost-heaving conditions. The compressive strength of the asphalt mixture in a uniaxial compression test is about 4.5–6 MPa with a single freeze–thaw cycle. Furthermore, when frost heaving occurs on the asphalt pavement between 5.8 and 6.5 MPa, the numerical simulation method can be used to calculate the internal stress of the structure, which found that the compressive stress under the frost-heaving condition was the same magnitude as the compressive strength under the freeze–thaw testing condition.

Field Evaluation of High Modulus Asphalt Concrete Resistance to Low-Temperature Cracking

High-modulus asphalt concrete has numerous advantages in comparison to conventional asphalt concrete, including increased resistance to permanent deformations and increased pavement fatigue life. However, previous studies have shown that the construction of road pavements with High Modulus Asphalt Concrete (HMAC) may significantly increase the risk of low-temperature cracking. Those observations were the motivation for the research presented in this paper. Four test sections with HMAC used in base and binder courses were evaluated in the study. Field investigations of the number of low-temperature cracks were performed over several years. It was established that the number of new low-temperature cracks is susceptible to many random factors, and the statistical term “reversion to the mean” should be considered. A new factor named Increase in Cracking Index was developed to analyze the resistance of pavement to low-temperature cracking. For all the considered field sections, samples were cut from each asphalt layer, and Thermal Stress Restrained Specimen Tests were performed in the laboratory. Correlations of temperature at failure and cryogenic stresses with the cracking intensity observed in the field were analyzed. The paper provides practical suggestions for pavement designers. When the use of high modulus asphalt concrete is planned for binder course and asphalt base, which may result in lower resistance to low-temperature cracking of pavement than in the case of conventional asphalt concrete, it is advisable to apply a wearing course with improved resistance to low-temperature cracking. Such an approach may compensate for the adverse effects of usage of high modulus asphalt concrete.

Concept and Development of an Accelerated Repeated Rolling Wheel Load Simulator (ARROWS) for Fatigue Performance Characterization of Asphalt Mixture

Fatigue performance is one of the most important properties that affect the service life of asphalt mixture. Many fatigue test methods have been developed to evaluate the fatigue performance in the lab. Although these methods have contributed a lot to the fatigue performance evaluation and the development of fatigue related theory and model, their limitations should not be ignored. This paper starts by characterizing the stress state in asphalt pavement under a rolling wheel load. After that, a literature survey focusing on the experimental methods for fatigue performance evaluation is conducted. The working mechanism, applications, benefits, and limitations of each method are summarized. The literature survey results reveal that most of the lab test methods primarily focus on the fatigue performance of asphalt mixture on a material level without considering the effects of pavement structure. In addition, the stress state in the lab samples and the loading speed differ from those of asphalt mixture under rolling wheel tire load. To address these limitations, this paper proposes the concept of an innovative lab fatigue test device named Accelerated Repeated Rolling Wheel Load Simulator (ARROWS). The motivation, concept, and working mechanism of the ARROWS are introduced later in this paper. The ARROWS, which is under construction, is expected to be a feasible and effective method to simulate the repeated roll wheel load in the laboratory.

The Effectiveness of Liquid PUD-TiO2 Photocatalyst on Asphalt Pavement

Harmful nitrogen oxides (NO_X) are produced by vehicles, factories, mines, and power plants. In fact, over one million tons of NO_X are emitted into the atmosphere every year, making it the most prevalent air pollutant. Approximately 45% of the emitted NO_X in Korea is associated with the transportation sector. In this paper, the application of a new TiO₂ photocatalyst on the asphalt roads to remove combustion-produced NO_X was studied. In an effort to overcome the known constructability, adhesion, cost, and dispersion problems associated with TiO₂ photocatalysts, the liquid polyurethane (PUD) was added with TiO₂ to form a mixture later known as liquid PUD-TiO₂. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to determine the optimum amount of photocatalyst to be used and the performance of asphalt pavement coated with PUD-TiO₂ in terms of indirect tensile strength, water susceptibility, and rutting resistance. Additionally, the performance of PUD-TiO₂ under different humidity, wind speed, and temperature conditions was also evaluated. The results showed that the application of PUD-TiO₂ photocatalyst on the asphalt pavements road reduces the NO_X available on the surface of the road. The PUD-TiO₂ also was found to have no effects on the performance of asphalt pavement. Meanwhile, under different weather conditions, the reaction between the photocatalyst and NO_X is mainly affected by the humidity.

Effects of Fiber Diameter on Crack Resistance of Asphalt Mixtures Reinforced by Basalt Fibers Based on Digital Image Correlation Technology

It is now more popular to use basalt fibers in the engineering programs to reinforce the crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. However, research concerning the impact of the basalt fiber diameter on the macro performance of AC-13 mixtures is very limited. Therefore, in this paper, basalt fibers with three diameters, including 7, 13 and 25 μm, were selected to research the influences of fiber diameter on the crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. Different types of crack tests, such as the low temperature trabecular bending test (LTTB), the indirect tensile asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT), and the semi-circular bend test (SCB), were conducted to reveal the crack resistance of AC-13 mixtures. The entire cracking process was recorded through the digital image correlation (DIC) technique, and the displacement cloud pictures, strain, average crack propagation rate (V) and fracture toughness (FT) indicators were used to evaluate the crack inhibition action of the fiber diameter on the mixture. The results showed that the incorporation of basalt fiber substantially improved the crack resistance, slowed down the increase of the displacement, and delayed the fracture time. Basalt fiber with a diameter of 7 μm presented the best enhancement capability on the crack resistance of the AC-13 mixture. The flexibility index (FI) of the SCB test showed a good correlation with V and FT values of DIC test results, respectively. These findings provide theoretical advice for the popularization and engineering application of basalt fibers in asphalt pavement.

Preliminary Study on New Alternative Binders through Re-Refined Engine Oil Bottoms (REOBs) and Industrial By-Product Additives

Recent studies have worked towards addressing environmental issues such as global warming and greenhouse gas emissions due to the increasing awareness of the depletion of natural resources. The asphalt industry is seeking to implement measures to reduce its carbon footprint and to promote sustainable operations. The reuse of several wastes and by-products is an example of a more eco-friendly activity that fulfils the circular economy principle. Among all possible solutions, the road pavement sector encourages, on one hand, the use of recycled materials as a partial replacement of the virgin lithic skeleton; on the other hand, it promotes the use of recycled materials to substituting for a portion of the petroleum bituminous binder. This study aims to use Re-refined Engine Oil Bottoms (REOBs) as a main substitute and additives from various industrial by-products as a full replacement for virgin bitumen, producing high-performing alternative binders. The REOBs have been improved by utilizing additives in an attempt to improve their specific properties and thus to bridge the gap between REOBs and traditional bituminous binders. An even larger amount of virgin and non-renewable resources can be saved using these new potential alternative binders together with the RAP aggregates. Thus, the reduction in the use of virgin materials is applied at the binder and the asphalt mixture levels. Rheological, spectroscopic, thermogravimetric, and mechanical analysis were used to characterize the properties, composition, and characteristics of the REOBs, REOB-modified binders, and asphalt mixes. Thanks to the rheological investigations of possible alternative binders, 18 blends were selected, since they behaved like an SBS-modified bitumen, and then they were used for producing the corresponding asphalt mixtures. The preliminary mechanical analysis of the asphalt mixtures shows that six mixes have promising responses in terms of stiffness, tensile resistance, and water susceptibility. Nevertheless, the high variability of recycled materials and by-products has to be taken into consideration during the definition of alternative binders and recycled asphalt mixtures. In fact, this study highlights the crucial effects of the chemical composition of the constituents and their compatibility on the behaviour of the final product. This preliminary study represents a first attempt to define alternative binders, which can be used in combination with recycled aggregates for producing more sustainable road materials. However, further analysis is necessary in order to assess the durability and the ageing tendency of the materials.

Damage Fracture Characterization of Asphalt Mixtures Considering Freeze-Thaw Cycling and Aging Effects Based on Acoustic Emission Monitoring

Freeze–thaw (F–T) cycling and aging effects are the main factors contributing to the deterioration of asphalt mixtures. The acoustic emission (AE) technique enables real-time detection regarding the evolution of internal damage in asphalt mixtures during the loading process. This study set out to investigate the effects of F–T cycling and aging on the damage characteristics of asphalt mixture under splitting loads. Firstly, the Marshall specimens were prepared and then exposed to various numbers of F–T cycles (one, three, five, and seven) and different durations of aging (short-term aging and long-term aging for 24, 72, 120 and 168 h), after which the specimens were loaded by means of indirect tensile (IDT) testing, and corresponding parameters were synchronously collected by the AE acquisition system during the fracture process. Finally, the energy, cumulative energy and peak frequency were selected to investigate the damage mechanisms of asphalt mixtures. The findings demonstrate that the AE parameters provided effective identification of the deterioration for all specimens in real-time, and that the F–T cycling and aging effects altered the damage characteristics of asphalt mixtures, causing early damage, exacerbating the formation of micro-cracks in the early stage, accelerating the expansion of macro-cracks and advancing the debonding between the asphalt and aggregates. The findings of this study provide further insight into the mechanism of F–T cycling and aging effects on the deterioration of asphalt mixture.
