Abstract
Bromodomain-containing protein 4(BRD4) plays an important role in the occurrence and development of various malignant tumors, which has attracted the attention of scientific research institutions and pharmaceutical companies. The structural modification of most currently available BRD4 inhibitors is relatively simple, but the drug effectiveness is limited. Research has found that the inhibition of BD1 may promote the differentiation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cell; however, the inhibition of BD2 will not cause this outcome. Therefore, newly potential drugs which target BRD4-BD2 need further research. Herein, we initially built QSAR models out of 49 compounds using HQSAR, CoMFA, CoMSIA, and Topomer CoMFA technology. All of the models have shown suitable reliabilities (q2 = 0.778, 0.533, 0.640, 0.702, respectively) and predictive abilities (r2pred = 0.716, 0.6289, 0.6153, 0.7968, respectively) for BRD4-BD2 inhibitors. On the basis of QSAR results and the search of the R-group in the topomer search module, we designed 20 new compounds with high activity that showed appropriate docking score and suitable ADMET. Docking studies and MD simulation were carried out to reveal the amino acid residues (Asn351, Cys347, Tyr350, Pro293, and Asp299) at the active site of BRD4-BD2. Free energy calculations and free energy landscapes verified the stable binding results and indicated stable conformations of the complexes. These theoretical studies provide guidance and theoretical basis for designing and developing novel BRD4-BD2 inhibitors.

Abstract
The maintenance of genome integrity in the germline is crucial for mammalian development. Long interspersed element type 1 (LINE-1, L1) is a mobile genetic element that makes up about 17% of the human genome and poses a threat to genome integrity. N6-methyl-adenosine (m6A) plays an essential role in regulating various biological processes. However, the function of m6A modification in L1 retrotransposons and human germline development remains largely unknown. Here we knocked out the m6A methyltransferase METTL3 or the m6A reader YTHDF2 in human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and discovered that METTL3 and YTHDF2 are crucial for inducing human spermatogonial stem cells (hSSCs) from hESCs in vitro. The removal of METTL3 or YTHDF2 resulted in increased L1 retrotransposition and reduced the efficiency of SSC differentiation in vitro. Further analysis showed that YTHDF2 recognizes the METTL3-catalyzed m6A modification of L1 retrotransposons and degrades L1 mRNA through autophagy, thereby blocking L1 retrotransposition. Moreover, the study confirmed that m6A modification in human fetal germ cells promotes the degradation of L1 retrotransposon RNA, preventing the insertion of new L1 retrotransposons into the genome. Interestingly, L1 retrotransposon RNA was highly expressed while METTL3 was significantly downregulated in the seminal plasma of azoospermic patients with meiotic arrest compared to males with normal fertility. Additionally, we identified some potentially pathogenic variants in m6A-related genes in azoospermic men with meiotic arrest. In summary, our study suggests that m6A modification serves as a guardian of genome stability during human germline development and provides novel insights into the function and regulatory mechanisms of m6A modification in restricting L1 retrotransposition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Agricultural land-use change is an important driver of pest population dynamics, and can alter source-sink dynamics and the concentration-dilution effects of the landscape. Understanding the effects of land use on pests at both landscape and regional levels is essential for the development of sustainable pest management strategies given the large changes occurring in cropping systems in China. At the landscape level, we investigated the impacts of landscape composition and edge density on pheromone trap catch of codling moth (Cydia pomonella) in apple orchards, in Aksu, Xinjiang, China. At the regional scale, we conducted a meta-analysis using data from studies performed across the Aksu area in recent decades, to assess the relationship between trends in codling moth abundance and the area of apple cultivation. RESULTS Both extensive planting of apple and large areas of annual crops in the landscape increased the abundance of codling moth, whereas the presence of secondary host plants (peach, pear, walnut, plum, and apricot) had a negative effect. Seminatural habitats and landscape edge density did not significantly affect codling moth abundance. The responses of different generations of codling moth to landscape factors were varied. At the regional level, codling moth occurrence was positively correlated with the expansion of apple production areas. CONCLUSION Expansion of apple cultivation increases the abundance of codling moth in agricultural landscapes. We recommend decreasing the area devoted to monocultures of apple when designing agricultural landscapes and increasing plantings of secondary host crops to dilute and reduce the abundance of codling moth. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous models for predicting delirium after cardiac surgery remained inadequate. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning-based prediction model for postoperative delirium (POD) in cardiac valve surgery patients. METHODS The electronic medical information of the cardiac surgical intensive care unit (CSICU) was extracted from a tertiary and major referral hospital in southern China over 1 year, from June 2019 to June 2020. A total of 507 patients admitted to the CSICU after cardiac valve surgery were included in this study. Seven classical machine learning algorithms (Random Forest Classifier, Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine Classifier, K-nearest Neighbors Classifier, Gaussian Naive Bayes, Gradient Boosting Decision Tree, and Perceptron.) were used to develop delirium prediction models under full (q = 31) and selected (q = 19) feature sets, respectively. RESULT The Random Forest classifier performs exceptionally well in both feature datasets, with an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.92 for the full feature dataset and an AUC of 0.86 for the selected feature dataset. Additionally, it achieves a relatively lower Expected Calibration Error (ECE) and the highest Average Precision (AP), with an AP of 0.80 for the full feature dataset and an AP of 0.73 for the selected feature dataset. To further evaluate the best-performing Random Forest classifier, SHAP (Shapley Additive Explanations) was used, and the importance matrix plot, scatter plots, and summary plots were generated. CONCLUSIONS We established machine learning-based prediction models to predict POD in patients undergoing cardiac valve surgery. The random forest model has the best predictive performance in prediction and can help improve the prognosis of patients with POD.

Abstract
With a generally warming global climate, the number of Tetranychus truncatus specimens in the Hexi region in China has been increasing. As ectotherms, the growth and development of T. truncatus are greatly affected by changes in environmental temperature. The effect of heatwaves on organisms depends on a delicate balance between damage and repair periods. Therefore, we simulated nine patterns of periodically recurring changes in the frequency of high-temperature days using an intraday gradual temperature change model to study and compare the effects on the development and reproduction of pyridaben-sensitive and -resistant strains of T. truncatus. The results showed that the influence of the frequency of high-temperature days on developmental stages, longevity and fecundity was different between the two strains. The egg and immature stages of the sensitive strain were all affected by hot days, whereas the adult stage was less affected by the frequency. The egg stage of the resistant strain was less affected; it was mainly affected in the immature and adult stages. Under the moderate condition of increasing the proportion of days at normal temperature, the longevity of the resistant strain gradually increased and reached a maximum at a 1:3 frequency, and then it decreased with the increase in high-temperature days. The longevity of the sensitive strain was less affected by frequency, and there was no significant difference between most treatment and control groups. In addition, both sensitive and resistant strains were able to complete growth and development under all nine frequencies of high-temperature days, but the reproductive rate was lower than it was at normal temperatures, indicating that both strains of T. truncatus adapted to high temperatures at the expense of reduced reproduction rates. This lays a key theoretical foundation for predicting the occurrence of agricultural pest populations under the background of climate warming and developing appropriate control strategies.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the therapeutic effects and immunomodulatory mechanisms of human placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PMSCs) in diabetic kidney disease (DKD). METHODS Streptozotocin-induced DKD rats were administered an equivalent volume of saline or PMSCs (1 × 106 in 2 mL phosphate-buffered saline per rat) for 3 weeks. Eight weeks after treatment, we examined the biochemical parameters in the blood and urine, the ratio of T helper 17 cells (Th17) and regulatory T cells (Treg) in the blood, cytokine levels in the kidney and blood, and renal histopathological changes. In addition, we performed PMSC tracing and renal transcriptomic analyses using RNA-sequencing. Finally, we determined whether PMSCs modulated the Th17/Treg balance by upregulating programmed death 1 (PD-1) in vitro. RESULTS The PMSCs significantly improved renal function, which was assessed by serum creatinine levels, urea nitrogen, cystatin C levels, urinary albumin-creatinine ratio, and the kidney index. Further, PMSCs alleviated pathological changes, including tubular vacuolar degeneration, mesangial matrix expansion, and glomerular filtration barrier injury. In the DKD rats in our study, PMSCs were mainly recruited to immune organs, rather than to the kidney or pancreas. PMSCs markedly promoted the Th17/Treg balance and reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-17A and IL-1β) in the kidney and blood of DKD rats. In vitro experiments showed that PMSCs significantly reduced the proportion of Th17 cells and increased the proportion of Treg cells by upregulating PD-1 in a cell-cell contact manner and downregulating programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in PMSCs, which reversed the Th17/Treg balance. CONCLUSION We found that PMSCs improved renal function and pathological damage in DKD rats and modulated Th17/Treg balance through the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway. These findings provide a novel mechanism and basis for the clinical use of PMSCs in the treatment of DKD.

Abstract
Purpose Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death globally. However, there are few clinical drugs for stroke therapy. Novel and effective neuroprotectants are called on the way. Methods In this study, 93 steroids from a constructed steroidal library were randomly numbered and blindly evaluated in an L-glutamate-induced HT-22 oxidative stress model. The neuroprotective effects of 5 candidates were further investigated in potassium deprivation-induced apoptosis of cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs), D-glutamate-induced excitotoxicity of CGNs, and cortical neuron (CN) models. Results Interestingly, unblinding revealed that cholest-4-ene-3,6-dione (78), a cholesterol derivative, was first found to have comprehensive neuroprotective effects in all cell models. 78 administration also decreased the infarction volume and improved motor function in middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model rats. Additionally, 78 treatment decreased intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NO production in the HT-22 cell model. Finally, lipidomics and molecular docking results showed that 78 may exert its neuroprotective effects by increasing platelet-activating factor (PAF) analog 1-(9Z-pentadecenoyl)-glycero-3-phosphocholine production. Conclusion This study indicates that 78, a novel neuroprotectant, is a promising therapeutic candidate with comprehensive neuroprotective effects for the treatment of ischemic stroke by decreasing ROS/reactive nitrogen species (RNS) levels and increasing 1-(9Z-pentadecenoyl)-glycero-3-phospho-choline production.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The disposable esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) system is a novel endoscopic device which is highly portable and is designed to eliminate the risk of cross-infection caused by reusable EGD. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and safety of disposable EGD in emergency, bedside, and intraoperative settings. METHODS This was a prospective, single-center, noncomparative study. Disposable EGD was used for emergency, bedside, and intraoperative endoscopies in 30 patients. The primary end-point was the technical success rate of the disposable EGD. Secondary end-points included technical performance indicators including clinical operability, image quality score, procedure time, the incidence of device malfunction and/or failure, and the incidence of adverse events. RESULTS A total of 30 patients underwent diagnosis and/or treatment with disposable EGD. Therapeutic EGD was performed on 13/30 patients, including hemostasis (n = 3), foreign body retrieval (n = 6), nasoenteric tube placement (n = 3), and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (n = 1). The technical success rate was 100%: all procedures and indicated interventions were completed without changing to a conventional upper endoscope. The mean image quality score obtained immediately after procedure completion was 3.72 ± 0.56. The mean (± SD) procedure time was 7.4 (± 7.6) min. There were no device malfunctions or failures, device-related adverse events, or overall adverse events. CONCLUSION The disposable EGD may be a feasible alternative to the traditional EGD in emergency, bedside, and intraoperative settings. Preliminary data show that it is a safe and effective tool for diagnosis and treatment in emergency and bedside upper gastrointestinal cases. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common pathology that typically causes unilateral radiculopathy on the same side as herniation, while patients may occasionally present with contralateral symptoms. Owing to the rare incidence of LDH with contralateral symptoms, the pathological mechanism remains unclear and the optimal surgical strategy is a subject of debate. This study aimed to provide new insights into the pathological mechanism of contralateral symptoms and assess the efficacy of ipsilateral hemilaminectomy and discectomy surgery in this population. METHODS This study was a retrospective, single-center, clinical case series, including 11 LDH cases with exclusive contralateral symptoms. We searched for LDH cases that were presented at our institution between January 2011 and December 2020. Adult LDH Patients with contralateral radicular pains were included, while those with ipsilateral radiculopathy, lumbar stenosis, foraminal stenosis on the symptomatic side, multilevel disc herniations, scoliosis, and lumbar operation history were excluded. Visual Analog Scale (VAS), clinical features, radiographic images, and other data were collected from the study cohort of 11 cases for further analysis. We also reviewed LDH cases in English literature from 1978 to 2023 to analyze their clinical characteristics and treatment. RESULTS The incidence rate of LDH with contralateral symptoms in single-level LDH cases was 0.32%. The average age of our 11 cases was 49.3 years old, and five of them were female (45.5%). All individuals had single-level lateral LDH, with six cases (54.5%) located at L4-5 and five cases (45.5%) located at L5-S1. Upon admission, patients presented with lower back pain (seven cases, 63.6%), radicular pain (seven cases, 63.6%), hypoesthesia (seven cases, 63.6%), and muscle weakness (one case, 9.1%) on the contralateral side alone. Each case experienced ipsilateral hemilaminectomy and discectomy, and no lateral recess stenosis, hypertrophy of facets or ligaments, and sequestrated discs were found during surgery. All of them have good pain relief with two cases reporting no pain and nine cases reporting only mild pain at the last follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Based on the surgical findings of our 11 LDH cases with contralateral symptoms, we hypothesized that the contralateral symptoms might be produced when the nerve root on the contralateral symptomatic side was tightly pulled by the herniated disc via the dural mater. Ipsilateral hemilaminectomy and discectomy surgery effectively and efficiently relieve the symptoms without postoperative complications for these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Wendan decoction (WDD) has been used as a treatment for depression in China since the Tang Dynasty. However, high-quality evidence for this is lacking. This study proposed a novel synthetic external control method to evaluate its clinical efficacy. METHODS We searched public databases for clinical trials of WDD for major depression. The rate of change of the Hamilton Depression Scale score from baseline was used as an efficacy indicator, and a model-based meta-analysis was performed to analyze the clinical efficacy of WDD. To establish a reference standard for efficacy, the antidepressant efficacy distributions of a placebo and 19 antidepressants were virtually synthesized based on the same conditions as the clinical trial characteristics of WDD. RESULTS This study included 5 clinical trials with 177 participants. WDD showed a slow onset, with a time to reach the maximum effect of 9.71 weeks. At 8 weeks, the rate of change in the Hamilton Depression Scale score from baseline was 66.4% (95% CI = 62.3%-70.3%) in the WDD group. The pure effect value of WDD, after deducting the placebo effect, was 26.9% (95%CI = 23.0%-30.9%), which was comparable with 5 types of antidepressants and significantly higher than the others. CONCLUSION The proposed external synthetic control method provides a solution to the bottleneck problem of clinical efficacy evaluation in real-world research on traditional Chinese medicine. WDD has high clinical development value for the treatment of depression, and large-scale randomized controlled trials are recommended to confirm its antidepressant effect.

Abstract
The IMpower010 and KEYNOTE-091 trials have demonstrated the benefit of adjuvant immunotherapy (IO) after chemotherapy (C+IO) in resected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including those with epidermal growth factor receptor gene (EGFR) mutation. Meanwhile, several studies have reported that EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) may prolong disease-free survival (DFS) in these patients. However, there is currently a lack of head-to-head comparison between these two adjuvant therapy strategies. Therefore, we designed a comparative analysis of their efficacy to inform clinical decision-making by assessing DFS as the primary outcome. The results of direct meta-analysis indicated that EGFR-TKI reduced the risk of recurrence and/or death in completely resected NSCLC (HREGFR-TKI/chemo = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.23 to 0.74, p=0.003), while C+IO did not significantly improve DFS compared with chemotherapy alone (HRC+IO/chemo=0.68, 95% CI: 0.31 to 1.50, p=0.338). Indirect comparison suggested that EGFR-TKI has a trend to prolong DFS compared with C+IO (HR EGFR-TKI/C+IO = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.23 to 1.61, p=0.312), while the third-generation TKI (3rd-TKI) osimertinib significantly outperformed C+IO (HR3rd-TKI/C+IO = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.70, p=0.006). In conclusion, osimertinib rather than immunotherapy should be regarded as the preferred adjuvant therapy in completely resected, EGFR-mutant NSCLC.

Abstract
Of major concern is the lack of correlation between the material design and structural function of asphalt pavement in China. The objective of this paper is to identify the layer in asphalt pavement where permanent deformation occurs most seriously and to propose a control index for that layer's asphalt mixture. The permanent deformation of each layer was determined through the utilization of thickness measurements obtained from field cores. The results indicate that the reduction in thickness is more significant in the driving lane than in the ridge band and shoulder. This phenomenon can be attributed to the intensified densification and shearing deformation that arise from the combined impacts of recurrent axle loads and high temperatures. Compared to surface and base layers, the bearing layer is the primary area of concern for permanent deformation in asphalt pavement. Therefore, it is imperative to incorporate the ability of bearing-layer asphalt mixture to withstand permanent deformation as a crucial design parameter. The dynamic modulus of the bearing-layer asphalt mixture is significantly influenced by the type of asphalt, gradation, and asphalt content, compared to other design parameters. Based on the relationship established between dynamic modulus and dynamic stability, with creep rate as the intermediate term, a control standard was proposed to evaluate the permanent deformation of the bearing-layer asphalt mixture. This study can provide reasonable and effective guidance for prolonging pavement life and improving pavement performance.

Abstract
The colonization of some bacteria to their host cell is mediated by selective adhesion between adhesin and glycan. The evaluation of antiadhesive carbohydrates in vitro has great significance in discovering new antibacterial drugs. In this paper, a microfluidic chip integrated with impedimetric neoglycoprotein biosensors was developed to evaluate the antibacterial effect of carbohydrates. Mannosylated bovine serum albumin (Man-BSA) was taken as the neoglycoprotein and immobilized on the microelectrode-modified gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) to form a bionic glycoprotein nanosensing surface (Man-BSA/Au NPs). Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) was selected as a bacteria model owing to its selective adhesion to the mannose. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to characterize the adhesion capacity of S. typhimurium to the Man-BSA/Au NPs and evaluate the antiadhesive efficacy of nine different carbohydrates. It was illustrated that the 4-methoxyphenyl-α-D-pyran mannoside (Phenyl-Man) and mannan peptide (Mannatide) showed excellent antiadhesive efficacy, with IC50 values of 0.086 mM and 0.094 mM, respectively. The microfluidic device developed in this study can be tested in multiple channels. Compared with traditional methods for evaluating the antibacterial drug in vitro, it has the advantages of being fast, convenient, and cost-effective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have suggested that genital mycoplasma infections may be associated with male infertility. However, this association remains controversial due to time lapse, sample size, and regional prevalence. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to systematically evaluate the relationship between genital mycoplasma and male infertility through a meta-analysis and to provide a basis for the clinical management of male infertility. METHODS We conducted a search on PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and CNKI databases, from January 2000 to June 2023 to identify case-control studies on the interrelationship between genital mycoplasma infection and male infertility. Two independent researchers performed an assessment of the methodological quality of trials according to the Newcastle-Ottawa scale and extracted data strictly based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and afterward, we carried out a meta-analysis using Stata 16.0. Pooled odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to assess this relationship. RESULTS This meta-analysis included 21 studies from seven countries with a total of 53025 infertility cases and 6435 controls; the age range of the participating men was from 20 to 59 years old. The results obtained showed a higher prevalence of M. genitalium, M. hominis and U. urealyticum infections in infertile men than in the controls, with the opposite result for U. parvum (M. genitalium, OR, 3.438 [95% CI: 1.780, 6.643], with P = 0.000; M. hominis, OR, 1.840 [95% CI: 1.013, 3.343], with P = 0.045; U. urealyticum, OR, 3.278 [95% CI: 2.075, 5.180], with P = 0.000; U. parvum, OR, 1.671 [95% CI: 0.947, 2.950], with P = 0.077). Further, two subgroup analyses also showed that M. hominis and U. urealyticum infections were strongly associated with male infertility in China (M. hominis, P = 0.009; U. urealyticum, P = 0.000); however, M. hominis and U. urealyticum infection was not strongly associated with male infertility worldwide (M. hominis, P = 0.553; U. urealyticum, P = 0.050). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis revealed that male infertility was significantly associated with M. genitalium, M. hominis and U. urealyticum infections, while U. parvum infection was not. Further, our study showed that genital mycoplasma infection influences male infertility and provides a basis for future treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether male and female patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) differ in their risk of recurrence after catheter ablation remains controversial. Large differences in baseline characteristics between males and females often affect study results. METHODS Patients with drug-refractory paroxysmal AF who received their first catheter ablation procedure between January 2018 and December 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Propensity score matching was used to adjust for age, body mass index, and AF duration. Our main concerns were sex differences in comorbidities, procedures, arrhythmia recurrences, and procedure-related complications. RESULTS For this study, 352 patients (176 pairs) were matched, and baseline characteristics were comparable between the two groups. Intraprocedural sex differences were apparent as more male patients received cavotricuspid isthmus ablation (55.00% vs. 31.43%, p = .005). Full follow-up, 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year AF recurrence rates were comparable between male and female groups. Multivariable Cox regression showed that the recurrence risk of paroxysmal AF was similar between male and female patients. AF duration was the only potential risk factor and occurred for only male patients. There were no significant differences in the subgroup analyses. Procedure-related complications were comparable between the male and female groups. CONCLUSION We did not observe differences in baseline characteristics, arrhythmia recurrences, or procedure-related complications between male and female patients. Sex differences were reflected mainly in the finding that male patients received more cavotricuspid isthmus ablations, and atrial fibrillation duration was the only potential risk factor for recurrence and only for male patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated temperature can directly affect the insect pest population dynamics. Many experimental studies have indicated that high temperatures affect the biological and ecological characteristics of the widely distributed crop pest Aphis gossypii, but the molecular mechanisms underlying its response to heat stress remain unstudied. Here, we used transcriptomic analysis to explore the key genes and metabolic pathways involved in the regulation of thermotolerance in A. gossypii at 29 °C, 32 °C, and 35 °C. RESULTS The results of bioinformatics analysis show that few genes were consistently differentially expressed among the higher temperature treatments compared to 29 °C, and a moderate temperature increase of 3 °C can elicit gene expression changes that help A. gossypii adapt to warmer temperatures. Based on KEGG pathway enrichment analysis, we found that genes encoding four heat shock protein 70 s (Hsp70s) and nine cathepsin B (CathB) proteins were significantly upregulated at 35 °C compared with 32 °C. Genes related to glutathione production were also highly enriched between 32 °C and 29 °C. Silencing of two Hsp70s (ApHsp70A1-1 and ApHsp68) and two CathBs (ApCathB01 and ApCathB02) with RNA interference using a nanocarrier-based transdermal dsRNA delivery system significantly increased sensitivity of A. gossypii to high temperatures. CONCLUSION A. gossypii is able to fine-tune its response across a range of temperatures, and Hsp70 and CathB genes are essential for adaption of A. gossypii to warmer temperatures. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the differences in circulating DNA methylation levels of CXCR5 between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) and healthy controls (HC), and the correlation of methylation changes with clinical characteristics of RA patients. METHODS Peripheral blood samples were collected from 239 RA patients, 30 patients with OA, and 29 HC. Target region methylation sequencing to the promoter region of CXCR5 was achieved using MethylTarget. The methylation level of cg04537602 and methylation haplotype were compared among the three groups, and the correlation between methylation levels and clinical characteristics of RA patients was performed by Spearman's rank correlation analysis. RESULTS The methylation level of cg04537602 was significantly higher in the peripheral blood of RA patients compared with OA patients (p = 1.3 × 10-3 ) and in the HC group (p = 5.5 × 10- 4 ). The sensitivity was enhanced when CXCR5 methylation level combined with rheumatoid factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide with area under curve (AUC) of 0.982 (95% confidence interval 0.970-0.995). The methylation level of cg04537602 in RA was positively correlated with C-reactive protein (CRP) (r = .16, p = .01), and in RA patients aged 60 years and above, cg04537602 methylation levels were positively correlated with CRP (r = .31, p = 4.7 × 10- 4 ), tender joint count (r = .21, p = .02), visual analog scales score (r = .21, p = .02), Disease Activity Score in 28 joints (DAS28) using the CRP level DAS28-CRP (r = .27, p = 2.1 × 10- 3 ), and DAS28-ESR (r = .22, p = .01). We also observed significant differences of DNA methylation haplotypes in RA patients compared with OA patients and HC, which was consistent with single-loci-based CpG methylation measurement. CONCLUSION The methylation level of CXCR5 was significantly higher in RA patients than in OA and HC, and correlated with the level of inflammation in RA patients, our study establishes a link between CXCR5 DNA methylation and clinical features that may help in the diagnosis and disease management of RA patients.

Abstract
Vascular diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Therefore, effective treatment strategies that can reduce the risk of vascular diseases are urgently needed. The relationship between Interleukin-11 (IL-11) and development of vascular diseases has gained increasing attention. IL-11, a target for therapeutic research, was initially thought to participate in stimulating platelet production. Additional research concluded that IL-11 is effective in treating several vascular diseases. However, the function and mechanism of IL-11 in these diseases remain unknown. This review summarizes IL-11 expression, function, and signal transduction mechanism. This study also focuses on the role of IL-11 in coronary artery disease, hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, aortic disease, and other vascular diseases and its potential as a therapeutic target. Consequently, this study provides new insight into the clinical diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases.

Abstract
Background A one-stop procedure involving catheter ablation and left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is an option for high-risk atrial fibrillation patients. Few studies have reported the efficacy and safety of cryoballoon ablation (CBA) combined with LAAO, and no studies have compared the combination of LAAO with CBA or radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Methods A total of 112 patients were enrolled in the present study; 45 patients received CBA combined with LAAO (group 1), and 67 patients received RFA combined with LAAO (group 2). Patient follow-up was performed for 1 year to detect peri-device leaks (PDLs) and safety outcomes (defined as a composite of peri-procedural and follow-up adverse events). Results The number of PDLs at the median 59 days follow-up was comparable between the two groups (33.3% in group 1 vs. 37.3% in group 2, p = 0.693). Safety outcomes were also comparable between the two groups (6.7% in group 1 vs. 7.5% in group 2, p = 1.000). Multivariable regression showed that PDLs risk and safety outcomes were all similar between the two groups. Subgroup analysis of PDLs indicated no significant differences. Follow-up safety outcomes were related to anticoagulant medication, and patients without PDLs were more likely to discontinue antithrombotic therapy. The total procedure and ablation times were all significantly shorter for group 1. Conclusion When compared with left atrial appendage occlusion combined with radiofrequency, left atrial appendage occlusion combined with cryoballoon ablation has the same risk of peri-device leaks and safety outcomes, but the procedure time was significantly reduced.

Abstract
Variants in FDXR reportedly cause autosomal recessive auditory neuropathy and optic atrophy, expanding to retinal dystrophy. This study aimed to further clarify associated phenotypes. FDXR variants were selected from our in-house whole-exome sequencing dataset of 6397 families with different eye conditions. The clinical data of the identified patients were summarized. Biallelic pathogenic or likely pathogenic FDXR variants were identified in 11 unrelated patients, including 14 missense variants of which 10 were novel. Fundus observation showed complete optic disc pallor, silver wiring or severe attenuation of retinal vessels, and varying degrees of generalized retinal degeneration. Before the detection of FDXR variants, four patients were clinically diagnosed as congenital amaurosis due to the presence of nystagmus a few months after birth, while seven were diagnosed as early-onset severe retinal dystrophy due to the presence of nyctalopia and/or poor vision in early childhood. Biallelic FDXR variants are a frequent cause of congenital or early-onset severe retinal dystrophy, especially for patients with severe optic atrophy and retinal dystrophy in early childhood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To improve the diagnosis of early gastric cancer (EGC), a train-the-trainer (TTT) course was developed. This trial aimed to investigate whether TTT courses from trained trainers could improve trainees' EGC detection. METHODS In this multi-center, retrospective study, the training was carried out 8 times in one year. Clinical records one year before ("2016"), during ("2017"), and after ("2018") the course were collected. The primary endpoint was the improvement of EGC detection rate after TTT courses. RESULTS Twenty-four trainees from 17 hospitals were included in this study. A total of 123,416 esophagogastroduodenoscopy and 65,570 colonoscopy procedures were analyzed. The early gastric cancer detection rate (EDR) was 0.101% in 2016, which significantly increased to 0.338% in 2018 (p = 0.015). The early gastric cancer ratio (ECR, ratio of newly detected EGCs to all newly detected gastric cancers) in 2016 was 8.440%, which consistently increased to 11.853% and 19.778% in 2017 and 2018 (p = 0.006), respectively. In contrast, the advanced gastric cancer detection rate (ADR) was similar before, during, or after the course (p = 0.987). The 3-year EDR, ECR, and ADR in esophageal and colorectal cancer were not significantly different. CONCLUSIONS The systematic training course can improve EGC detection rate and may be an effective educational strategy to reduce gastrointestinal cancers mortality.

Abstract
Bartonella are vector-borne gram-negative facultative intracellular bacteria causing emerging infectious diseases worldwide, and two thirds of known Bartonella species are carried by rodents. We captured rodents, shrews and rodent ectoparasitic mites in rural areas of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China from 2012 to 2021 and used the animal spleen tissues for the PCR amplification of Bartonella gltA and rpoB genes. PCR showed 9.4% (40/425) rodents, and 5.1% (12/235) shrews were positive for Bartonella. Seven Bartonella species including three novel species were identified in five rodent species and one shrew species, indicating the abundance and genetic diversity of Bartonella in rodents and shrews. The infection rate of each Bartonella species in the animal species was as below: novel Candidatus Bartonella crocidura in shrews Crocidura lasiura (5.1%, 12/235); novel Candidatus Bartonella cricetuli in hamsters Tscherskia triton (20%, 9/45); novel Candidatus Bartonella muris in striped field mice Apodemus agrarius (4.2%, 7/168) and house mice Mus musculus (1.5%, 2/135); Bartonella fuyuanensis in striped field mice (8.9%, 15/168) and house mice (0.7%, 1/135); Bartonella rattimassiliensis and Bartonella tribocorum in brown rats Rattus norvegicus (6.7%, 3/45 and 4.2%, 2/45, respectively); Bartonella queenslandensis in Chinese white-bellied rat Niviventer confucianus (12.5%, 1/8). These results suggest that Bartonella infected a variety of rodent and shrew species with high infection rate, but each Bartonella specie is restricted to infect only one or a few genetically closely related rodent species. In addition, Candidatus Bartonella cricetuli, Candidatus Bartonella muris and Bartonella coopersplainsensis were found in chigger Walchia micropelta (33.3%, 3/9), and B. fuyuanensis were found in chigger Leptotrombidium intermedium (4.1%, 1/24), indicating chiggers may be reservoirs of Bartonella. In conclusion, abundant genetic diversified Bartonella species are found to infect rodents, shrews and chiggers, but each Bartonella species has a strict rodent animal host specificity; and chigger mites may play a role in Bartonella transmission.

Abstract
Quantification of grassland carbon (C) variations is necessary for understanding how grazing and climate change interact to regulate carbon capture and release. Central Asia (CA) has the largest temperate grassland belt in the world and unique temperate dryland ecosystems, which experienced severe climate change and grazing-induced disturbances. However, the impact of grazing on C dynamics is highly uncertain owing to climate variations. Here, an arid ecosystem model (AEM) supplemented with a grazing module that specifically addressed physiological and ecological characteristics of dryland vegetation was developed to quantitatively simulate grassland C dynamics in response to changes in precipitation, temperature, grazing intensity, and CO2 level in the past decades. The regional simulation results showed that net primary productivity (NPP) was affected mainly by precipitation (in 59% of the studied area). Grazing had a negative effect on NPP and C stocks, whereas overcompensation occurred in 25.71% of the studied area, mainly in the dry western parts. The complex interaction effects of climate, CO2, and grazing negatively affected productivity, with a grassland NPP decrease of - 1.14 g C/m2/a and high interannual variability. We found that the temporal pattern of cumulative C sequestration, especially total C and vegetation C (VEGC), closely followed the annual fluctuations of precipitation. VEGC stocks decreased from 182.22 to 177.82 g C/m2, with a very low value between 1998 and 2008, when precipitation significantly decreased. The results indicate that southern Xinjiang and the Turgay Plateau of Kazakhstan are ecologically fragile areas due to grassland degradation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the associations between gut microbiota characteristics and glycometabolic profiles in mice fed diets high in advanced glycation end products (AGEs). METHODS C57BL/6 mice were exposed to a heat-treated diet or exogenous AGEs for 24 weeks, and glucose metabolism was assessed via the intraperitoneal glucose-tolerance test (IPGTT). Serum AGE and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) levels were quantified using ELISA kits. 16S rDNA sequencing was performed to analyze the changes in gut microbiota according to α- and β-diversity. Key operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were evaluated, and co-abundance groups (CAGs) were delineated using weighted correlation network analysis. Associations between CAGs and clinical parameters were analyzed using Spearman correlation; predictive functional analysis of gut microbiota was performed using Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes data. RESULTS We identified significant increases in fasting blood glucose (FBG) and fasting insulin levels, as well as homeostatic model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and glucose area under the receiver operating characteristic curve from IPGTT, in the high-AGE diet groups relative to controls at week 24. Serum AGE and LBP levels were elevated, and the α- and β-diversity of gut microbiota reduced in high-AGE diet groups. We identified 92 key OTUs that clustered into six CAGs, revealing positive correlations between CAG2/3/5 and insulin levels and mice weight and negative correlations between CAG1/3/4/5 and AGE, FBG, and LBP levels and HOMA-IR in mice fed high-AGE diets. We observed a reduced abundance of butyrate-producing bacteria, including Bacteroidales_S24-7, Ruminococcaceae, and Lachnospiraceae, in mice fed high-AGE diets, with pathway analysis of gut microbiota revealing significantly enriched fructose and mannose metabolism. CONCLUSION High-AGE diets altered the gut microbiota composition and structure, and induced insulin resistance in mice. In the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, the loss of butyrate-producing bacteria might impair the colonic epithelial barrier, thereby triggering chronic low-grade inflammation.

Abstract
Anti-PD-1)/programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) antibody plus platinum-based chemotherapy (PBC) has replaced PBC as first-line treatment for patients with non-squamous (sq) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) lacking targetable driver mutations. However, few studies have directly compared immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) plus chemotherapy with bevacizumab plus chemotherapy (beva +chemo) in this setting. Herein, we conducted an indirect comparison for anti-PD-1/PD-L1 antibody plus chemotherapy (ICI +chemo) versus beva +chemo in non-sq NSCLC using the frequentist methods. The main outcomes analyzed include progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and objective response rate (ORR). Data were subtracted from randomized trials comparing ICI +chemo or beva +chemo against PBC. Fourteen trials involving 6165 patients were included. Direct meta-analyses showed that both ICI +chemo (PFS: HR 0.58, OS: HR 0.73, ORR: relative risk (RR) 1.66) and beva +chemo (PFS: HR 0.74, OS: HR 0.89, ORR: RR 1.62) improved clinical outcomes compared with PBC. Indirect comparison showed that ICI +chemo reduced the risk of disease progression (HR 0.78, 95% CI 0.60 to 1.00) and death (HR 0.82, 95% CI 0.71 to 0.94) compared with beva +chemo. The PFS benefits with ICI +chemo over beva +chemo were non-significant in those with negative PD-L1 expression and non-smokers. In conclusion, ICI +chemo is superior to beva +chemo in first-line treatment for non-sq NSCLC.

Abstract
A versatile tumor-targeting stimuli-responsive theranostic platform for peritoneal metastases of colorectal cancer is proposed in this work for tumor tracking and photothermal-enhanced chemotherapy. A quenched photosensitizer ("off" state) is developed and escorted into a tumor-targeting oxaliplatin-embedded micelle. Once reaching the tumor cell, the micelle is clasped to release free oxaliplatin, as well as the "off" photosensitizer, which is further activated ("turned-on") in the tumor reducing microenvironment to provide optical imaging and photothermal effect. The combined results from hyperthermia-enhanced chemotherapy, deep penetration, perfused O2 , and the leveraged GSH-ROS imbalance in tumor cells are achieved for improved antitumor efficacy and reduced systematic toxicity.

Abstract
A hierarchical porous carbon material (HPC) with an ultra-high specific surface area was synthesized with sisal fiber (SF) as a precursor, and then H3PW12O40·24H2O (HPW) was immobilized on the support of SF-HPC by a simple impregnation method. A series characterization technology approved that the obtained SF-HPC had a high surface area of 3152.46 m2g-1 with micropores and macropores. HPW was well-dispersed on the surface of the SF-HPC support, which reduced the loading of HPW to as low as 5%. HPW/SF-HPW showed excellent catalytic performance for oxidative desulfurization, and the desulfurization rate reached almost 100% under the optimal reaction conditions. The desulfurization rate of HPW/SF-HPW could be maintained at above 94% after four recycles.

Abstract
In recent years, Protaetia brevitarsis Lewis has gradually become an important pest of several crops including grape (Vitis vinifera L.) and peach (Amygdalus persica L.) in Xinjiang, China. Toward improving trapping efficacy as part of a management program, various colors, types, and placement of traps and the use of an attractant were evaluated in field and laboratory studies. Laboratory color-choice tests and field tests indicated that P. brevitarsis adults preferred red. In trap placement tests, more adults were captured on traps placed 1 or 1.5 m above the ground and on top of the horizontal grape canopy. Before grape ripening, more adults were captured in traps placed in a 0.5-m border around the outside edge of the vineyard; during grape ripening, more were caught within the vineyard. Newly designed traps that were red, with a triangular baffle and a landing plate, were more efficient than traditional bucket-shaped traps. When P. brevitarsis adults were trapped and killed from June to July 2018, the population of P. brevitarsis adults in August to early September 2018 was significantly lower than in August to early September 2017, when adults had not been trapped and killed in the prior 2 mo.

Abstract
Wuhan City (WH) in China was the first place to report COVID-19 in the world and the outbreak of COVID-19 was controlled in March of 2020 in WH. It is unclear what percentage of people were infected with SARS-CoV-2 and what percentage of population is carriers of SARS-CoV-2 in WH. We retrospectively analyzed the SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM antibody positive rates in 63,107 healthy individuals from WH and other places of China using commercial colloidal gold detection kits from March 6 to May 3, 2020. Statistical approaches were utilized to explore the difference and correlation for the seropositive rate of IgG and IgM antibody on the basis of sex, age group, geographic region and detection date. The total IgG and IgM antibody positive rate of SARS-CoV-2 was 1.68% (186/11,086) in WH, 0.59% (226/38,171) in Hubei Province without Wuhan (HB), and 0.38% (53/13,850) in the nation except for Hubei Province (CN), respectively. The IgM positive rate was 0.46% (51/11,086) in WH, 0.13% (51/38,171) in HB, and 0.07% (10/13,850) in CN. The incidence of IgM positive rates in healthy individuals increased from March 6 to May 3, 2020 in WH. Female and older age had a higher probability of becoming infected than males (OR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.08-1.65) or younger age (OR = 2.25; 95% CI: 1.06-4.78). The seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was relatively low in WH and other places of China, but it is significantly high in WH than other places of China; a large amount of asymptomatic carriers of SARS-CoV-2 existed after elimination of clinical cases of COVID-19 in Wuhan City. Therefore, SARS-CoV-2 may exist in a population without clinical cases for a long period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nivolumab plus ipilimumab (N-I) or pembrolizumab (PEM) is associated with survival improvement as chemotherapy-free, first-line treatment for patients with advanced non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and positive programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1). However, no direct comparison data exist between these two regimens to inform clinical decisions. Therefore, we performed indirect comparison for N-I versus PEM using frequentist methods. RESULTS Three randomized trials (KEYNOTE-024, KEYNOTE-042, and CheckMate 227) involving 2372 patients were included. For patients with tumor PD-L1 level of ≥1%, pooled meta-analyses showed that both N-I and PEM improved overall survival (OS) relative to chemotherapy (N-I: hazard ratio [HR] 0.82, 95% CI 0.69-0.97; PEM: HR 0.81, 95% CI 0.71-0.93); whereas only N-I significantly improved progression-free survival (PFS) (N-I: HR 0.79, 95% CI 0.65-0.96; PEM: HR 1.07, 95% CI 0.94-1.21). Neither N-I nor PEM was associated with improved objective response rate (ORR) compared with chemotherapy (N-I: relative risk [RR] 1.20, 95% CI 0.98-1.46; PEM: RR 1.03, 95% CI 0.86-1.23). Indirect comparisons showed that N-I was associated with longer PFS than PEM (HR 0.77, 95% CI 0.62-0.95). However, N-I was not superior to PEM in terms of OS (HR 0.98, 95% CI 0.77-1.24) and ORR (RR 1.17, 95% CI 0.89-1.52). N-I showed a less favorable toxicity profile relative to PEM (all grade adverse events: RR 1.28, 95% CI 1.17-1.40). CONCLUSIONS N-I and PEM provide comparable OS benefit for PD-L1-positive NSCLC. N-I further improves PFS relative to PEM but at meaningful cost of toxicities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitrectomy is one of the main treatments for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Postoperative neovascular glaucoma, in which it is difficult to obtain satisfactory results using conventional filtering surgery, is one of the most serious complications of vitrectomy. It often requires destructive surgery, such as ciliary body photocoagulation or freezing, and the outcome with regard to visual acuity (VA) is extremely poor. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of neovascular glaucoma (NVG) after modern vitrectomy techniques and investigate how variables assessed before and after vitrectomy are associated with patients who develop NVG after PDR surgery. METHODS This was an observational study including the medical records of patients who underwent vitrectomy for PDR at Tianjin Eye Hospital from June 2014 to July 2016, were followed for at least 24 months postoperatively, and NVG developed within 2 years after surgery was recorded. Each patient underwent complete preoperative ophthalmic examinations in both preoperative and follow-up appointments. Factors associated with survival were determined using the Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival analysis to calculate the incidence of NVG after vitrectomy for PDR. Multivariable analysis was performed with the Cox regression proportional hazards model to verify the results of the analysis and eliminate interference factors between variables. All statistical analyses were performed using R statistical software ( http://www.r-project.org ) for Windows. RESULTS In all, 238 patients (238 eyes) fulfilled the study criteria. NVG occurred in 11 of 238 eyes (4.6%). The percentages of NVG development after vitrectomy at 6, 12, and 24 months were 0.42%, 3.3%, and 4.6%, respectively. After step analysis, multivariable regression identified preoperative high intraocular pressure (IOP) combined with retinal vein occlusion (RVO), severe PDR, no postoperative intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (IVR), and higher HbA1c levels as significant predictors of NVG. CONCLUSION Preoperative high IOP combined with RVO, severe PDR, no postoperative intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (IVR), and higher HbA1c levels are significant predictors of NVG after vitrectomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immune-checkpoint inhibitors plus chemotherapy are emerging as effective first-line treatment in advanced non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), but little is known about the magnitude of benefits and potential clinical predictors. METHODS We performed a meta-analysis of randomized trials that compared PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor plus chemotherapy with chemotherapy in first line of treatment for advanced NSCLC. The outcomes included progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR) and treatment-related adverse events (AEs). A fixed-effect or random-effects model was adopted depending on between-study heterogeneity. RESULTS Six trials involving 3144 patients were included. PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor plus chemotherapy was significantly associated with improvement of PFS (hazards ratio [HR], 0.62; 95% CI 0.57-0.67; P < .001), OS (HR, 0.68; 95% CI 0.53-0.87; P = .002) and ORR (relative ratio [RR], 1.56; 95% CI 1.29-1.89; P < .001), irrespective of PD-L1 expression level. The significant predictor(s) for treatment benefit with combination therapy versus chemotherapy alone were PD-L1 expression level for PFS (P < .001); types of checkpoint inhibitor for ORR (P < .001); histology (P = .025), age (P = .038), gender (P < .001), and types of checkpoint inhibitor (P < .001) for OS. In safety analyses, PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor plus chemotherapy had significantly higher incidence of adverse events (AEs) of grade 3 or higher (RR, 1.14; P = .007), AEs leading to treatment discontinuation (RR, 1.29; P = .022), serious AEs (RR 1.70; P = .006), immune mediated AEs of any grade (RR, 2.37; P < .001), and immune mediated AEs of grade 3 or higher (RR, 3.71; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor plus chemotherapy, compared with chemotherapy, is associated with significantly improved PFS, ORR, and OS in first-line therapy in NSCLC, at the expense of increased treatment-related AEs.

Abstract
Helicoverpa armigera is an universal pest around the world, which has recovered again in recent years because of the adjustment of cropping structure and resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in China. As a new insecticide spinetoram is extensively used to control many pest insects, including H. armigera. However the lethal and sublethal effects of spinetoram on cotton bollworm have not been assessed. In the present study, the toxicity of spinetoram against cotton bollworm was tested under laboratory conditions. Results demonstrated spinetoram showed an excellent activity against H. armigera, especially, against Bt (Cry1Ac) resistant H. armigera. Treatment with spinetoram at the doses of 0.19 mg/kg and 0.36 mg/kg (LC8 and LC20 after 24h oral exposure) significantly arrested the development of surviving larvae and caused significant decrease in larvae wet weight. Besides, the survivors after spinetoram treatments showed significant reduction of pupation ratio, pupal weight, emergence ratio, longevity and fecundity of adults. At same time, spinetoram treatments resulted in significant increase in the prepupal and pupal periods of survivors. In summary, these results showed that spinetoram could be used as an effective pesticide to control H. armigera, especially Cry1Ac-ressitacne, consequently to take both lethal and sublethal effects to cotton bollworm into consideration in cotton bollworm control strategy.

Abstract
Low-toxic core-shell ZnSe:Eu/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were prepared through two steps in water solution: nucleation doping and epitaxial shell grown. The structural and morphological characteristics of ZnSe/ZnS:Eu QDs with different shell thickness were explored by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. The characteristic photoluminescence (PL) intensity of Eu ions was enhanced whereas that of band-edge luminescence and defect-related luminescence of ZnSe QDs was decreased with increasing shell thickness. The transformation of PL intensity revealed an efficient energy transfer process between ZnSe and Eu. The PL intensity ratio of Eu ions (I613) to ZnSe QDs (I B ) under different shell thickness was systemically analyzed by PL spectra and time-resolved PL spectra. The obtained results were in agreement with the theory analysis results by the kinetic theory of energy transfer, revealing that energy was transmitted in the form of dipole-electric dipole interaction. This particular method of adjusting luminous via changing the shell thickness can provide valuable insights towards the fundamental understanding and application of QDs in the field of optoelectronics.

Abstract
This paper presents a numerical and experimental study on the performance of a methanol steam reformer integrated with a hydrogen/air combustion reactor for hydrogen production. A CFD-based 3D model with mass and momentum transport and temperature characteristics is established. The simulation results show that better performance is achieved in the cross-U type reactor compared to either a tubular reactor or a parallel-U type reactor because of more effective heat transfer characteristics. Furthermore, Cu-based micro reformers of both cross-U and parallel-U type reactors are designed, fabricated and tested for experimental validation. Under the same condition for reforming and combustion, the results demonstrate that higher methanol conversion is achievable in cross-U type reactor. However, it is also found in cross-U type reactor that methanol reforming selectivity is the lowest due to the decreased water gas shift reaction under high temperature, thereby carbon monoxide concentration is increased. Furthermore, the reformed gas generated from the reactors is fed into a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In the test of discharging for 4 h, the fuel cell fed by cross-U type reactor exhibits the most stable performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anti-angiogenesis treatments are the most commonly used treatments for the vision loss caused by exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD), in which the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs with ranibizumab and bevacizumab are current standard treatments. However, the outcome of anti-VEGF therapeutics is not uniform in all patients. METHODS We performed a literature-based meta-analysis including, five published studies relevant to HTRA1 and response to anti-VEGF treatment (bevacizumab or ranibizumab). Summary odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using fixed- and random-effects models. Sensitivity analysis and meta-regression were also performed. Q-statistic test and Egger's test was used to evaluate heterogeneity and publication bias respectively. RESULTS Overall, no association between the rs11200638 polymorphism in HTRA1 gene and the anti-VEGF treatment response was found in the genotype GG versus AA (OR = 1.06; 95% CI: 0.77 to 1.48; P = 0.98), genotype GA versus AA (OR = 1.11; 95% CI: 0.83 to 1.47; P = 0.93), genotype GG + GA versus AA (OR = 1.22; 95% CI: 0.94 to 1.57; P = 0.09), and allele G versus A (OR = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.78 to 1.08; P = 0.14). In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity Caucasian population, and a significant association was still not observed in all genetic models. Sensitivity analysis indicated the robustness of our findings, and no publication bias was observed in our meta-analysis. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that there was no association between the polymorphism rs11200638 in HTRA1 gene and response to anti-VEGF treatment of exudative AMD. However, more studies are needed to further prove the conclusion of present study, especially well-designed and high quality randomised controlled trials or intervention studies.

Abstract
Feature selection is a practical approach for improving the performance of text classification methods by optimizing the feature subsets input to classifiers. In traditional feature selection methods such as information gain and chi-square, the number of documents that contain a particular term (i.e. the document frequency) is often used. However, the frequency of a given term appearing in each document has not been fully investigated, even though it is a promising feature to produce accurate classifications. In this paper, we propose a new feature selection scheme based on a term event Multinomial naive Bayes probabilistic model. According to the model assumptions, the matching score function, which is based on the prediction probability ratio, can be factorized. Finally, we derive a feature selection measurement for each term after replacing inner parameters by their estimators. On a benchmark English text datasets (20 Newsgroups) and a Chinese text dataset (MPH-20), our numerical experiment results obtained from using two widely used text classifiers (naive Bayes and support vector machine) demonstrate that our method outperformed the representative feature selection methods.

Abstract
Bartonella species are emerging human pathogens. Bats are known to carry diverse Bartonella species, some of which are capable of infecting humans. However, as the second largest mammalian group by a number of species, the role of bats as the reservoirs of Bartonella species is not fully explored, in term of their species diversity and worldwide distribution. China, especially Northern China, harbors a number of endemic insectivorous bat species; however, to our knowledge, there are not yet studies about Bartonella in bats in China. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of Bartonella species in bats in Northern China. Bartonella species were detected by PCR amplification of gltA gene in 25.2% (27/107) bats in Mengyin County, Shandong Province of China, including 1/3 Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, 2/10 Rhinolophus pusillus, 9/16 Myotis fimbriatus, 1/5 Myotis ricketti, 14/58 Myotis pequinius. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Bartonella species detected in bats in this study clustered into ten groups, and some might be novel Bartonella species. An association between Bartonella species and bat species was demonstrated and co-infection with different Bartonella species in a single bat was also observed. Our findings expanded our knowledge on the genetic diversity of Bartonella in bats, and shed light on the ecology of bat-borne Bartonella species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding interspecific associations in old-growth forests will help to reveal mechanisms of interspecific replacement in the process of forest development and provide a theoretical basis for vegetation restoration and reestablishment. In this study, we analyzed interspecific associations of eleven dominant tree populations of varying development stages in an old-growth oak forest stand in the Qinling Mountains, China. We examined overall interspecific associations (multiple species) and pairwise interspecific associations (two species). RESULTS Interspecific competition was intense during forest development and was the main factor driving succession. Community structure appears to become more stable over time which supports the harsh-benign hypothesis that interspecific competition is more common in stable sites. CONCLUSION Old growth oak (Quercus spp.) forests are distributed widely around the world in part due to oak being a typical K-selected species. K-selected species produce fewer, high-quality offspring with higher survival rates, strong competitive ability, and longevity. The resulting distribution shifted from clumped to random, likely as a result of intense interspecific competition creating ecological niche differentiation.

Abstract
Co-clustering, often called biclustering for two-dimensional data, has found many applications, such as gene expression data analysis and text mining. Nowadays, a variety of multi-dimensional arrays (tensors) frequently occur in data analysis tasks, and co-clustering techniques play a key role in dealing with such datasets. Co-clusters represent coherent patterns and exhibit important properties along all the modes. Development of robust co-clustering techniques is important for the detection and analysis of these patterns. In this paper, a co-clustering method based on hyperplane detection in singular vector spaces (HDSVS) is proposed. Specifically in this method, higher-order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) transforms a tensor into a core part and a singular vector matrix along each mode, whose row vectors can be clustered by a linear grouping algorithm (LGA). Meanwhile, hyperplanar patterns are extracted and successfully supported the identification of multi-dimensional co-clusters. To validate HDSVS, a number of synthetic and biological tensors were adopted. The synthetic tensors attested a favorable performance of this algorithm on noisy or overlapped data. Experiments with gene expression data and lineage data of embryonic cells further verified the reliability of HDSVS to practical problems. Moreover, the detected co-clusters are well consistent with important genetic pathways and gene ontology annotations. Finally, a series of comparisons between HDSVS and state-of-the-art methods on synthetic tensors and a yeast gene expression tensor were implemented, verifying the robust and stable performance of our method.

Abstract
This study aims to develop a novel device with nanofiber membrane capable of sustained release of temozolomide (TMZ) and neuron growth factor (NGF). An improved bio-availability of TMZ and NGF in surroundings proximal to the device was expected to be attained for a prolonged period of time. The device was developed by integrating TMZ-doped polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofiber (TP) membrane and NGF-coated PCL (NGFP) membrane using sodium alginate hydrogel. TP was prepared by direct electrospinning of TMZ/PCL. NGFP membrane was developed by layer-by-layer assembling technology. The incorporation of TMZ-doped nanofiber and NGFP nanofiber in the device was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The number of NGF layer in NGF-coated PCL membrane could be readily measured with energy spectrum analysis. The in vitro release study showed that TP-NGFP-TP membrane could efficiently liberate TMZ to inhibit the growth of C6 glioma cells, and sufficient NGF to induce the differentiation of PC12 neuron cells over four weeks. Such TP-NGFP-TP membrane device can be employed as a tampon to fill up surgical residual cavity and afford residual glioma removal, structural support, hemostasis, and local neural tissue reconstruction in the surgical treatment of glioma. The study opens a horizon to develop multifunctional biomaterial device for maximized glioma treatment efficacy.

Abstract
On the basis of monthly runoff series obtained in 1950-2013 and annual sediment load measured in 1956--2013 at five key hydrological stations in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin, this study used the Mann-Kendall methods to identify trend and abrupt changes of runoff and sediment load in relation to human activities. The results were as follows: (1) The annual and flood season runoffs showed significant decreasing trends at Yichang station, and showed slight downward trends at Hankou and Datong stations, while the abrupt changes of dry season runoff at Yichang, Hankou and Datong stations occurred in about 2007 and the change points were followed by significant increasing trends. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam, which began to operate in 2003, influenced the variations of runoff in the mainstream of Yangtze River, but the effect weakened with the distance along the downstream direction from TGD. (2) Since the 1990s, annual sediment loads at Yichang, Hankou, and Datong stations have been decreasing significantly, and after 2002, the annual sediment load at Yichang dropped below that of Hankou and Datong. The dams and deforestation/forestation contributed to the significant decreasing trend of the sediment load. In addition, the Three Gorges Dam aggravated the downward trend and caused the erosion of the riverbed and riverbanks in the middle and lower reaches. (3) The runoff and sediment load flowing from Dongting Lake into the mainstream of the Yangtze River showed significant decreasing trends at Chenglingji station after 1970s, and in contrast, slight increase in the sediment flow from Poyang Lake to the mainstream of the Yangtze River at Hukou station were detected over the post-TGD period (2003-2013). The result of the study will be an important foundation for watershed sustainable development of the Yangtze River under the human activities.
