Abstract
The development of nanotools for chemical sensing and macromolecular modifications is a new challenge in the biomedical field, with emphasis on artificial peptidases designed to cleave peptide bonds at specific sites. In this landscape, metal porphyrins are attractive due to their ability to form stable complexes with amino acids and to generate reactive oxygen species when irradiated by light of appropriate wavelengths. The issues of hydrophobic behavior and aggregation in aqueous environments of porphyrins can be solved by using its PEGylated derivatives. This work proposes the design of an artificial photo-protease agent based on a PEGylated mercury porphyrin, able to form a stable complex with l-Tryptophan, an amino acid present also in the lysozyme structure (a well-known protein model). The sensing and photodegradation features of PEGylated mercury porphyrin were exploited to detect and degrade both l-Trp and lysozyme using ROS, generated under green (532 nm) and red (650 nm) light lasers. The obtained system (Star3600_Hg) and its behavior as a photo-protease agent were studied by means of several spectroscopies (UV-Vis, fluorescence and circular dichroism), and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, showing the cleavage of lysozyme and the appearance of several short-chain residues. The approach of this study paves the way for potential applications in theranostics and targeted bio-medical therapies.

Abstract
Macrocyclic chemistry has been extensively developed over the past several decades. In fact, the architecture of new macrocyclic models has undergone exponential growth to offer molecules with specific properties. In this context, an attempt is made in this study to provide an overview of some synthetic methods allowing the elaboration of N-heterocycles containing macrocycles (imidazole, triazole, tetrazole, and pyrazole), as well as their applications in the complexation of metal cations or as pharmacological agents.

Abstract
Molecular recognition of host/guest molecules represents the basis of many biological processes and phenomena. Enzymatic catalysis and inhibition, immunological response, reproduction of genetic information, biological regulatory functions, the effects of drugs, and ion transfer-all these processes include the stage of structure recognition during complexation. The goal of this review is to solicit and publish the latest advances in the design and sensing and binding abilities of porphyrin-based heterotopic receptors with well-defined geometries, the recognition ability of which is realized due to ionic, H-bridge, charge transfer, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic interactions. The dissection of the considered low-energy processes at the molecular scale expands our capabilities in the development of effective systems for controlled recognition, selective delivery, and prolonged release of substrates of different natures (including drugs) to their sites of functioning.

Abstract
The synthesis of the porphyrin-calix[4]arene conjugates was carried out using the Pd(0)-catalyzed amination of Zn(II) meso-(3-bromophenyl)porphyrinate with bis(3-aminopropoxy)substituted calix[4]arenes (in cone and 1,3-alternate conformations). One of the conjugates was demetalated to give free porphyrin base derivative. The investigation of the fluorescence of the conjugates was studied in the presence of 18 metal perchlorates. The zinc porphyrinate derivatives were found to quench fluorescence in the presence of Cu(II), Al(III) and Cr(III) cations as well as on protonation. Metal-free conjugate was shown to act as a molecular probe for Zn(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) cations due to strong and different changes of the emission caused by these metals.

Abstract
Antibiotics are commonly used to control, treat, or prevent bacterial infections, however bacterial resistance to all known classes of traditional antibiotics has greatly increased in the past years especially in hospitals rendering certain therapies ineffective. To limit this emerging public health problem, there is a need to develop non-incursive, non-toxic, and new antimicrobial techniques that act more effectively and quicker than the current antibiotics. One of these effective techniques is antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). This review focuses on the application of porphyrins in the photo-inactivation of bacteria. Mechanisms of bacterial resistance and some of the current 'greener' methods of synthesis of meso-phenyl porphyrins are discussed. In addition, significance and limitations of aPDT are also discussed. Furthermore, we also elaborate on the current clinical applications and the future perspectives and directions of this non-antibiotic therapeutic strategy in combating infectious diseases.

Abstract
Porphyrin-based chemistry has reached an unprecedented period of rapid development after decades of study. Due to attractive multifunctional properties, porphyrins and their analogues have emerged as multifunctional organometals for environmental and energy purposes. In particular, pioneer works have been conducted to explore their application in pollution abatement, energy conversion and storage and molecule recognition. This review summarizes recent advances of porphyrins chemistry, focusing on elucidating the nature of catalytic process. The Fenton-like redox chemistry and photo-excitability of porphyrins and their analogues are discussed, highlighting the generation of high-valent iron oxo porphyrin species. Finally, challenges in current research are identified and perspectives for future development in this area are presented.

Abstract
Newly synthesized two kinds of achiral phenylacetylenes having a free-base- or a zinc-porphyrin (1 and Zn1, respectively) were polymerized by using a chiral rhodium catalyst system, Rh⁺(nbd)[(η⁶-C₆H₅)B⁻(C₆H₅)₃] catalyst and (R)-(+)- or (S)-(⁻)-1-phenylethylamine ((R)- or (S)-PEA, respectively) cocatalyst. Poly(1) and poly(Zn1) in THF showed a Cotton signal at the absorption region of the porphyrin and the main chain in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra. This result suggests that poly(1) and poly(Zn1) exist in a conformation with an excess of one-handed helix sense and the porphyrin moiety arranged in chiral helical fashion. The one-handed helical structure of poly(1) could be sustained in a mixture of THF/HMPA (10/2, v/v) due to stabilizing by stacking effect of porphyrin moieties along the main chain. This is the first example about helix-sense-selective polymerization by using Rh⁺(nbd)[(η⁶-C₆H₅)B⁻(C₆H₅)₃] catalyst. Additionally, poly(Zn1) showed about 10 times larger CD intensity in comparison with poly(1). This result suggests the regularity of arrangement of the porphyrin in poly(Zn1) is higher compared with poly(1). Spatial arrangement of porphyrins was achieved by utilizing a one-handed helical poly(phenylacetylenes) as a template.

Abstract
Panthenol is a biologically active compound closely related to vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). This work deals with the separation of panthenol enantiomers using high performance liquid chromatography. Different types of chiral stationary phases (β-cyclodextrin, isopropyl carbamate cyclofructan 6, amylose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate)) were tested in normal phase separation mode. Effect of mobile phase composition on the resolution and retention of enantiomers was studied. Two types of detectors, low-wavelength UV and polarimetric, were used. The optimal chromatographic system includes a chiral stationary phase based on amylose and a mobile phase of hexane/ethanol (60/40, v/v) where the resolution of enantiomers reached the value R
s = 2.49. Suitable chromatographic conditions were applied for the determination of panthenol enantiomers in samples of pharmaceutical preparations with the obtained recovery of more than 92 %. Linearity of the high performance liquid chromatography method with spectrophotometric detection was from 1.0 × 10−3 to 1.3 mg mL−1 (R
2 = 0.998), with the limit of detection of 0.3 × 10−3 mg mL−1 for both enantiomers.

Abstract
In recent years, scientific advancements have constantly increased at a significant rate in the field of biomedical science. Keeping this in view, the application of porphyrins and metalloporphyrins in the field of biomedical science is gaining substantial importance. Porphyrins are the most widely studied tetrapyrrole-based compounds because of their important roles in vital biological processes. The cavity of porphyrins containing four pyrrolic nitrogens is well suited for the binding majority of metal ions to form metalloporphyrins. Porphyrins and metalloporphyrins possess peculiar photochemical, photophysical, and photoredox properties which are tunable through structural modifications. Their beneficial photophysical properties, such as the long wavelength of emission and absorption, high singlet oxygen quantum yield, and low in vivo toxicity, have drawn scientists' interest to discover new dimensions in the biomedical field. Applications of porphyrins and metalloporphyrins have been pursued in the perspective of contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer, bio-imaging, and other biomedical applications. This review discusses photophysics and the photochemistry of porphyrins and their metal complexes. Secondly, it explains the current developments and mode of action for contrast agents for MRI. Moreover, the application of porphyrin and metalloporphyrin-based molecules as a photosensitizer in PDT of cancer, the mechanism of the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), factors that determine the efficiency of PDT, and the developments to improve this technology are delineated. The last part explores the most recent research and developments on metalloporphyrin-based materials in bio-imaging, drug delivery, and the determination of ferrochelatase in bone marrow indicating their prospective clinical applications.

Abstract
This review is devoted to porphyrin-based film materials. Various technological and scientific applications of ones are close to surface and interface related phenomena. In the part I of review the following topics are discussed the recent progress in field of submonolayers, monolayers and multilayers films on the vapor-solid interfaces, including results on (i) conformational behavior of adsorbed molecules, (ii) aggregation and surface phases formation, (iii) on-surface coordination networks, and (iv) on-surface chemical reactions. The examples of combined approaches to developing materials and porphyrin-based film materials application are also presented.

Abstract
Although the sophisticated Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) techniques facilitate the fabrication of uniform ultrathin monolayer and films, they are also revealed as powerful tools for the bottom-up construction of the nanostructures through the air/water interface. In this paper, unique nanoflowers or nanospheres were constructed based on the synthesized m-phthalic diamide-linked zinc bisporphyrinate tweezers using the Langmuir and LB techniques. It was found that the two tweezer-type zinc bisporphyrinates could form stable two-dimensional spreading films at the air/water interface, which could be subsequently transferred onto solid substrates using the vertical lifting method. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that at the initial spreading stage, the compound formed flat disklike domains and then hierarchically evolved into nanoflowers or nanospheres upon compressing the floating film. Such nanostructures have not been reported before and cannot be fabricated using the other self-assembly methods.

Abstract
Pre- and postintroduction of substituents with respect to the macrocyclization step leads to previously unknown N-substituted azacalixphyrins. The stepwise synthetic approach has been studied in detail to highlight the key role of the N-substituents of the precursors and/or intermediates in terms of reactivity. Based on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation, the relationship between the properties of the macrocycles and their degree of substitution is rationalized. Depending on the nature of the N-substituents, the formation of supramolecular ribbon-like structures could also be observed, as demonstrated by combined TEM, SEM, AFM, and FTIR experiments.

Abstract
An artificial photosynthesis system coupled with an enzyme was constructed using the nanospherical self-assembly of tyrosyl bolaamphiphiles, which worked as a host matrix exhibiting an antenna effect that allowed enhanced energy transfer to the ZnDPEG photosensitizer. The excited electrons from the photosensitizer were transferred to NAD+ to produce NADH, which subsequently initiated the conversion of an aldehyde to ethanol by alcohol dehydrogenase. Production of NADH and ethanol was enhanced by increasing the concentration of tyrosyl bolaamphiphiles. Spectroscopic investigations proved that the photosensitizer closely associated with the surface of the bolaamphiphile assembly through hydrogen bonds that allowed energy transfer between the host matrix and the photosensitizer. This study demonstrates that the self-assembly of bolaamphiphiles could be applicable to the construction of biomimetic energy systems exploiting biochemical activity.

Abstract
Covalently linked porphyrin/β-cyclodextrin derivatives have been synthesized by reaction between 5,10,15-tris-{p-[9-methoxy-tris-(ethyleneoxy)-phenyl]}-20-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-porphyrin, β-cyclodextrin-6-alcoholate and di-brominated aliphatic chains of different length, and characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. As a function of chain length, these compounds exhibit different degrees of water solubility, becoming higher with increasing chain length. The lack of self-assemblies between porphyrins and β-cyclodextrins (which renders the two sub-units completely free to perform their activities) and their water solubility, make these compounds excellent candidates in fields like drug-delivery or photodynamic therapy.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of guanidinium bis-porphyrin tweezers 1 and fullerene carboxylate 3, their assembly into a novel supramolecular 1@3 electron donor-acceptor hybrid, and its characterization. In solution, the binding constant affording 1@3 is exceptionally high. 1@3, which features a highly confined topography, builds up from a combination of guanidinium-carboxylate hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking/charge-transfer motifs. The latter is governed by interactions between the electron-donating porphyrin and the electron-accepting fullerene. Importantly, positive cooperativity between the applied binding motifs is corroborated by a number of experimental techniques, such as NMR, absorption, fluorescence, etc. In addition, transient absorption experiments shed light onto electron-transfer processes taking place in the ground state and upon photoexcitation. In fact, porphyrin excitation powers an electron transfer to the fullerene yielding charge separated state lifetimes in the nanosecond regime.

Abstract
Delivery strategies for porphyrinoid-based photosensitizers for use in therapeutic applications are based on a myriad of factors, which include porphyrinoid structure, solubility and cellular targets. These drug-delivery methods include encapsulation, hydrogels, protein carriers, nanoparticles and polymeric micelles among others. This article reviews the strategies for delivering porphyrinoids published to date and will focus on porphyrins, corroles, chlorins, bacteriochlorins, porphyrazines and phthalocyanines. Highlighted are the most recent and different strategies used for each of the corresponding porphyrinoid-based macrocycles.

Abstract
A fluorescent and colorimetric molecular probe containing phenol groups has been designed and synthesized. The anion binding ability was evaluated for biolgically important anions (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, AcO- and H2PO4-) by theoretical investigation, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and 1H-NMR titration experiments. Results indicated the probe showed strong binding ability for H2PO4- without the interference of other anions tested and the interaction process was accompanied by color changes. Theoretical investigation analysis revealed that intramolecular hydrogen bonds existed in the structure of the probe and the roles of molecular frontier orbitals in molecular interplay were determined.
