Co₂ and Co₃ Mixed Cluster Secondary Building Unit Approach toward a Three-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework with Permanent Porosity

A Porphyrin-Based 3D Metal-Organic Framework Featuring [Cu8Cl6]10+ Cluster Secondary Building Units: Synthesis, Structure Elucidation, Anion Exchange, and Peroxidase-Like Activity

Herein, we report a rare example of cationic three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) of [Cu5Cl3(TMPP)]Cl5 ⋅ xSol (denoted as Cu-TMPP; H2TMPP=meso-tetrakis (6-methylpyridin-3-yl) porphyrin; xSol=encapsulated solvates) supported by [Cu8Cl6]10+ cluster secondary building units (SBUs) wherein the eight faces of the Cl--based octahedron are capped by eight Cu2+. Surface-area analysis indicated that Cu-TMPP features a mesoporous structure and its solvate-like Cl- counterions can be exchanged by BF4 -, PF6 -, and NO3 -. The polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated Cu-TMPP (denoted as Cu-TMPP-PVP) demonstrated good ROS generating ability, producing ⋅OH in the absence of light (peroxidase-like activity) and 1O2 on light irradiation (650 nm; 25 mW cm-2). This work highlights the potential of Cu-TMPP as a functional carrier of anionic guests such as drugs, for the combination therapy of cancer and other diseases.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks for stimuli-responsive drug delivery

After entering the human body, drugs for treating diseases, which are prone to delivery and release in an uncontrolled manner, are affected by various factors. Based on this, many researchers utilize various microenvironmental changes encountered during drug delivery to trigger drug release and have proposed stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become promising stimuli-responsive agents to release the loaded therapeutic agents at the target site to achieve more precise drug delivery due to their high drug loading, excellent biocompatibility, and high stimuli-responsiveness. The MOF-based stimuli-responsive systems can respond to various stimuli under pathological conditions at the site of the lesion, releasing the loaded therapeutic agent in a controlled manner, and improving the accuracy and safety of drug delivery. Due to the changes in different physical and chemical factors in the pathological process of diseases, the construction of stimuli-responsive systems based on MOFs has become a new direction in drug delivery and controlled release. Based on the background of the rapidly increasing attention to MOFs applied in drug delivery, we aim to review various MOF-based stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems and their response mechanisms to various stimuli. In addition, the current challenges and future perspectives of MOF-based stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems are also discussed in this review.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of petroleum oil spills in seawater using a metal-organic framework (MOF)

Photocatalysis is a green approach that has appeared to be a viable option for the degradation of a variety of organic contaminants. This work outlines the process of preparing the titanium-based metal-organic framework (MIL-125) photocatalysts using a simple solvothermal method. Structural, morphological, and optical analysis of samples (MT18 and MT48) was carried out by XRD, FT-IR, Raman, SEM, TGA, BET, and UV-Vis. Results indicated that the sample prepared at 150 °C and reaction time of 48 h (MT48) has a low crystal size of 7 nm with an optical band gap of 3.2 eV and a surface area of 301 m² g^-1. Under UV-visible light irradiation, the as-prepared MOFs proved to upgrade photocatalytic activity in degrading crude oil spills in saltwater. Effects of catalyst dosage and exposure time on the degradation of an oil spill in seawater were studied and analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry and gas chromatography (GC-MS) which emphasized that the use of 250 ppm of MT48 photocatalyst under UV-Vis irradiation can degrade about 99% of oil spills in water after 2 h of exposure. The study's data revealed that MIL-125 could be used to photocatalyzed the cleanup of crude oil spills.

Visible Light-Driven Metal-Organic Framework-Mediated Activation and Utilization of CO2 for the Thiocarboxylation of Olefins

Visible light-mediated photoredox catalysis has emerged to be a fascinating approach for the activation of CO₂ and its subsequent fixation into valuable chemicals utilizing renewable and inexhaustible solar energy. Although great progress has been made in CO₂ photoreduction, visible light-assisted organic synthesis using CO₂ as a reactive substrate is rarely explored. Herein, we report an efficient, facile, and economically viable photoredox-mediated approach for the synthesis of important β-thioacids via carboxylation of olefins with CO₂ and thiols over a porous functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF), Fe-MIL-101-NH₂, as a photocatalyst under ambient conditions. This multicomponent reaction offers wide substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, easy work-up, cost-effective and reusable photocatalysts, and higher product selectivity. Computational studies suggested that CO₂ interacts with the thiophenol-styrene adduct to facilitate the synthesis of β-thioacids in almost quantitative yields.

A Tetradentate Phosphonate Ligand-based Ni-MOF as a Support for Designing High-performance Proton-conducting Materials

Developing a robust metal-organic framework (MOF) which facilitates proton hopping along the pore channels is very demanding in the context of fabricating an efficient proton-conducting membrane for fuel cells. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel tetradentate aromatic phosphonate ligand H₈ L (L=tetraphenylethylene tetraphosphonic acid) based Ni-MOF, whose crystal structure has been solved from single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Ni-MOF [Ni₂ (H₄ L)(H₂ O)₉ (C₂ H₇ SO)(C₂ H₇ NCO)] displays a monoclinic crystal structure with a space group of P 2₁ /c, a=11.887 Å, b=34.148 Å, c=11.131 Å, α=γ=90°, β=103.374°, where a nickel-hexahydrate moiety located inside the void space of the framework through several H-bonding interactions. Upon treatment of the Ni-MOF in different pH media as well as solvents, the framework remained unaltered, suggesting the presence of strong H-bonding interactions in the framework. High framework stability of Ni-MOF bearing H-bonding interactions motivated us to explore this metal-organic framework material as proton-conducting medium after external proton doping. Due to the presence of a large number of H-bonding interactions and the presence of water molecules in the framework we have carried out the doping of organic p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) and inorganic sulphuric acid (SA) in this Ni-MOF and observed high proton conductivity of 5.28×10^-2  S cm^-1 at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity for the SA-doped material. Enhancement of proton conductivity by proton doping under humid conditions suggested a very promising feature of this Ni-MOF.

Recent Progress on Microfine Design of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Structure Regulation and Gas Sorption and Separation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as an important and unique class of functional crystalline hybrid porous materials in the past two decades. Due to their modular structures and adjustable pore system, such distinctive materials have exhibited remarkable prospects in key applications pertaining to adsorption such as gas storage, gas and liquid separations, and trace impurity removal. Evidently, gaining a better understanding of the structure-property relationship offers great potential for the enhancement of a given associated MOF property either by structural adjustments via isoreticular chemistry or by the design and construction of new MOF structures via the practice of reticular chemistry. Correspondingly, the application of isoreticular chemistry paves the way for the microfine design and structure regulation of presented MOFs. Explicitly, the microfine tuning is mainly based on known MOF platforms, focusing on the modification and/or functionalization of a precise part of the MOF structure or pore system, thus providing an effective approach to produce richer pore systems with enhanced performances from a limited number of MOF platforms. Here, the latest progress in this field is highlighted by emphasizing the differences and connections between various methods. Finally, the challenges together with prospects are also discussed.

A Heterometallic Three-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Bearing an Unprecedented One-Dimensional Branched-Chain Secondary Building Unit

A heterometallic metal−organic framework (MOF) of [Cd₆Ca₄(BTB)₆(HCOO)₂(DEF)₂(H₂O)₁₂]∙DEF∙xSol (1, H₃BTB = benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoic acid; DEF = N,N′-diethylformamide; xSol. = undefined solvates within the pore) was prepared by solvothermal reaction of Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O, CaO and H₃BTB in a mixed solvent of DEF/H₂O/HNO₃. The compatibility of these two divalent cations from different blocks of the periodic table results in a solid-state structure consisting of an unusual combination of a discrete V-shaped heptanuclear cluster of [Cd₂Ca]₂Ca′ and an infinite one-dimensional (1D) chain of [Cd₂CaCa′]_n that are orthogonally linked via a corner-shared Ca²⁺ ion (denoted as Ca′), giving rise to an unprecedented branched-chain secondary building unit (SBU). These SBUs propagate via tridentate BTB to yield a three-dimensional (3D) structure featuring a corner-truncated P4₁ helix in MOF 1. This outcome highlights the unique topologies possible via the combination of carefully chosen s- and d-block metal ions with polydentate ligands.

Zinc and Cadmium Complexes of Pyridinemethanol Carboxylates: Metal Carboxylate Zwitterions and Metal-Organic Frameworks

The heterofunctional lactone furo[3,4-b]pyridin-5(7H)-one (L₁ ) undergoes a coordination-induced ring-opening reaction with Zn(NO₃ )₂  ⋅ 6H₂ O to yield the zwitterionic [Zn(L₁ ')₂ (H₂ O)₂ ] (1, L₁ '=2-(hydroxymethyl)nicotinate) with an uncoordinated carboxylate. The same reaction with Cd(NO₃ )₂  ⋅ 4H₂ O provides a two-dimensional (2D) network of [Cd(L₁ ')₂ ]_n (3) with the carboxylates coordinated to cadmium(II) propagating the assembly. The corresponding reactions of Zn(NO₃ )₂  ⋅ 6H₂ O and Cd(NO₃ )₂  ⋅ 4H₂ O with 2-(hydroxymethyl)isonicotinic acid (HL₂ ) generated zwitterionic [Zn(L₂ )₂ (H₂ O)₂ ] (2) and a 2D network [Cd(L₂ )₂ ]_n ⋅nDMF (4, DMF=N,N'-dimethylformamide), respectively. Complexes 1-4 are weakly emissive, giving ligand-centered emissions at 409 nm (1), 412/436 nm (2), 404 nm (3), and 412/436 nm (4) in CHCl₃ solutions upon excitation at 330 nm. This work points to the potential of using 'hidden' functionalities widely found in small organic molecules and natural products for the construction of coordination complexes with new functionality and potential applications.

Smoothing the single-crystal to single-crystal conversions of a two-dimensional metal–organic framework via the hetero-metal doping of the linear trimetallic secondary building unit

Doping of Co²⁺ in the linear Cd₃ cluster secondary building units lowers the single-crystal to single-crystal conversion reactivity of the resulting metal–organic framework.
