Self-Assembly and Applications of Amphiphilic Hybrid POSS Copolymers

Ultrathin Films of MXene Nanosheets Decorated by Ionic Branched Nanoparticles with Enhanced Energy Storage Stability

Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as MXenes have shown great potential for energy storage applications due to their high surface area and high conductivity. However, their practical implementation is limited by their tendency to restack, similar to other 2D materials, leading to a decreased long-term performance. Here, we present a novel approach to addressing this issue by combining MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets with branched ionic nanoparticles from polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) using an amphiphilicity-driven assembly for the formation of composite monolayers of nanoparticle-decorated MXene nanosheets at the air-water interface. The amphiphilic hybrid MXene/POSS monolayers allow for the fabrication of organized multilayered films with ionic nanoparticles supporting the nanoscale gap between MXene nanosheets. For these composite multilayers, we observed a 400% enhancement in specific capacitance compared to pure drop-cast MXene films. Furthermore, dramatically enhanced electrochemical cycling stability for ultrathin-film electrodes (<400 nm in thickness) with a 91% capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles has been achieved. Our results suggest that this insertion of 0D ionic nanoparticles with complementary interactions in between 2D MXene nanosheets could be extended to other hybrid 0D-2D nanomaterials, providing a promising pathway for the development of hybrid electrode architectures with enhanced ionic transport for long-term energy cycling and storage, capacitive deionization, and ionic filtration.

Construction of Fluorescent Conjugated Polytriazole Containing Double-Decker Silsesquioxane: Click Polymerization and Thermal Stability

This study synthesized two azide-functionalized monomers through p-dichloro xylene and double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) units with NaN₃ to form DB-N₃ and DDSQ-N₃ monomers, respectively. In addition, five different propargyl-functionalized monomers were also prepared from hydroquinone, bisphenol A, bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methanone, 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (then reacted with hydrazine hydrate solution) and 1,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene with propargyl bromide to form P-B, P-BPA, P-CO, P-NP, and P-TPE monomers, respectively. As a result, various DDSQ-based main chain copolymers could be synthesized using Cu(I)-catalyzed click polymerization through DDSQ-N₃ with different propargyl-functionalized monomers, of which the chemical structure and molecular weight could be confirmed by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analyses. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy analyses also could characterize the thermal stability, morphology, and optical behaviors of these DDSQ-based copolymers. All results indicate that the incorporation of an inorganic DDSQ cage could improve the thermal stability such as thermal decomposition temperature and char yield, because of the DDSQ dispersion homogeneously in the copolymer matrix, and this would then affect the optical properties of NP and TPE units in this work.

Progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrids

This Review describes recent progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic POSS hybrids derived from mono-, di-, and multi-functionalized POSS cages. We highlight the self-assembled structures and physical properties of giant surfactants and chain-end- and side-chain-type hybrids derived from mono-functionalized POSS cages; main-chain-type hybrids derived from di-functionalized POSS cages; and star-shaped hybrids derived from multi-functionalized POSS cages; with various polymeric attachments, including polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), phenolic, PVPh, and polypeptides.

Self-Healing Silsesquioxane-Based Materials

This review is devoted to self-healing materials (SHM) containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as building blocks. The synthetic approach can vary depending on the role POSS are expected to play in a given system. POSS (especially double-decker silsesquioxanes) can be grafted in side chains of a polymer backbone or used as segments of the main chain. Appropriate functionalization allows the formation of dynamic bonds with POSS molecules and makes them an active component of SHM, both as crosslinking agents and as factors that enhance the dynamics of macromolecules in the polymer matrix. The latter effect can be achieved by reversible release of bulky POSS cages or by the formation of separated inclusions in the polymer matrix through hydrophobic interactions and POSS aggregation. The unique properties of POSS-based self-healing systems make them interesting and versatile materials for various applications (e.g., repairable coatings, sealants, sensors, soft materials for tissue engineering, drug delivery, and wound healing).

Recent Advances in Polyurethane/POSS Hybrids for Biomedical Applications

Advanced organic-inorganic materials-composites, nanocomposites, and hybrids with various compositions offer unique properties required for biomedical applications. One of the most promising inorganic (nano)additives are polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS); their biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and phase separation ability that modifies the material porosity are fundamental properties required in modern biomedical applications. When incorporated, chemically or physically, into polyurethane matrices, they substantially change polymer properties, including mechanical properties, surface characteristics, and bioactivity. Hence, this review is dedicated to POSS-PU composites that have recently been developed for applications in the biomedical field. First, different modes of POSS incorporation into PU structure have been presented, then recent developments of PU/POSS hybrids as bio-active composites for scaffolds, cardiovascular stents, valves, and membranes, as well as in bio-imaging and cancer treatment, have been described. Finally, characterization and methods of modification routes of polyurethane-based materials with silsesquioxanes were presented.

Polypropylene/Lignin/POSS Nanocomposites: Thermal and Wettability Properties, Application in Water Remediation

Compositing is an interesting strategy that has always been employed to introduce or enhance desired functionalities in material systems. In this paper, sponges containing polypropylene, lignin, and octavinyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OV-POSS) were successfully prepared via an easy and elegant strategy called thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). To fully explore the behaviour of different components of prepared sponges, properties were characterized by a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared measurement (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, wettability properties toward an organic liquid and oil were investigated. The FTIR analysis confirmed the chemical modification of the components. TGA and DSC measurements revealed thermal stability was much better with an increase in OV-POSS content. OV-POSS modified sponges exhibited ultra-hydrophobicity and high oleophilicity with water contact angles of more than 125°. The SEM revealed that POSS molecules acted as a support for reduced surface roughness. Moreover, OV-POSS-based blend sponges showed higher sorption capacities compared with other blend sponges without OV-POSS. The new blend sponges demonstrated a potential for use as sorbent engineering materials in water remediation.

Synthesis and characterization of tetrathiol-substituted double-decker or ladder silsesquioxane nano-cores

Tetra(3-mercaptopropyl)-silsesquioxanes with double-decker (DDSQ) or ladder nano-cores were easily prepared from the corresponding tetraallyl derivatives through fast and convenient thiol-ene reactions. An additional tetrathiol-DDSQ with more flexible arms was also synthesized in high yield from the corresponding tetrachloro-DDSQ derivative. The three novel tetrathiol silsesquioxanes described represent versatile building blocks for the preparation of hybrid organic-inorganic materials.

Recent progress in using hybrid silicon polymer composites for wastewater treatment

Heavy metal ions, oil and organic pollutants in water does not only cause serious water pollution, but also pose serious threats to ecosystems and human health. To this end, water pollution has gradually gained human attention, and various wastewater treatment methods are emerging. Organosilicon polymer composites are a class of materials that contain organic-inorganic hybrid structures with the characteristics of hydrophobicity, thermal stability and easy modification, which provides a brand new solution for wastewater treatment. In this review, various structural features including amorphous, linear, and cage structure of silicon containing polymer composites and the removal mechanism targeting at heavy metal ions, oil and organic pollutants of silicon containing polymer composites are summarized. The viewpoints and challenges in adsorption and engineering application are discussed, and possible solutions are proposed.

Superhydrophilicity and strong salt-affinity: Zwitterionic polymer grafted surfaces with significant potentials particularly in biological systems

In recent years, zwitterionic polymers have been frequently reported to modify various surfaces to enhance hydrophilicity, antifouling and antibacterial properties, which show significant potentials particularly in biological systems. This review focuses on the fabrication, properties and various applications of zwitterionic polymer grafted surfaces. The "graft-from" and "graft-to" strategies, surface grafting copolymerization and post zwitterionization methods were adopted to graft lots type of the zwitterionic polymers on different inorganic/organic surfaces. The inherent hydrophilicity and salt affinity of the zwitterionic polymers endow the modified surfaces with antifouling, antibacterial and lubricating properties, thus the obtained zwitterionic surfaces show potential applications in biosystems. The zwitterionic polymer grafted membranes or stationary phases can effectively separate plasma, water/oil, ions, biomolecules and polar substrates. The nanomedicines with zwitterionic polymer shells have "stealth" effect in the delivery of encapsulated drugs, siRNA or therapeutic proteins. Moreover, the zwitterionic surfaces can be utilized as wound dressing, self-healing or oil extraction materials. The zwitterionic surfaces are expected as excellent support materials for biosensors, they are facing the severe challenges in the surface protection of marine facilities, and the dense ion pair layers may take unexpected role in shielding the grafted surfaces from strong electromagnetic field.

Progress in the Synthesis of Bifunctionalized Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) has been considered as one of the most promising nanofillers in academic and industrial research due to its unique multifunctional nanostructure, easy functionalization, hybrid nature, and high processability. The progress of POSS has been extensive, particularly applications based on single- or multiple-armed POSS. In polymer hybrids, in order to enhance the properties, bifunctional POSS has been incorporated into the backbone chain of the polymer. This review summarizes recent developments in the synthesis, modification, and application of bifunctional POSS-containing composite materials. This includes amino-POSS, hydroxyl-POSS, aromatic ring-POSS, ether-POSS, and vinyl groups-POSS and their applications, exemplified by polyurethanes (PUs) and polyimides (PIs). In addition, the review highlights the enhancement of thermal, mechanical, and optical properties of the composites.

A Selenone-Functionalized Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane for Selective Detection and Adsorption of Hg2+ ions in Aqueous Solutions

Developing novel functional polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) for various applications is highly desirable. Herein we present the first example of a novel selenone-functionalized POSS (POSS-Se) by treating an imidazolium-containing POSS with selenium powder under mild condition. The structure of POSS-Se was characterized by FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ²⁹Si NMR, and elemental analysis. Acid treatment of POSS-Se results in a hydrophilic red-orange colored solid, which is highly sensitive and selective for the detection of Hg²⁺ ions in aqueous solutions by visually observing the color change to pale yellow, and to white. Interestingly, POSS-Se has no activity on this detection. This finding is due to the Se-Se formation by acid-treatment and subsequent coordination-induced cleavage upon the addition of Hg²⁺ ions. The detection behavior can be precisely monitored by a "turn-on" fluorescence phenomenon with the limit of detection (LOD) of 8.48 ppb, comparable to or higher than many reported Hg²⁺ sensors. Moreover, POSS-Se demonstrates a selective and efficient adsorption of Hg²⁺ ions with a maximum capacity of 952 mg g^-1. The value is higher than most reported adsorbents for Hg²⁺ ions, typically thiol and/or thioether functional materials, indicating its promise as an efficient adsorbent for the selective removal of Hg²⁺ ions from industrial wastewater. This work may open up new horizons for the exploration of selenium-containing functional POSS.

Mechanically Robust Hybrid POSS Thermoplastic Polyurethanes with Enhanced Surface Hydrophobicity

A series of hybrid thermoplastic polyurethanes (PUs) were synthesized from bi-functional polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (B-POSS) and polycaprolactone (PCL) using 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as a coupling agent for the first time. The newly synthesized hybrid materials were fully characterized in terms of structure, morphology, thermal and mechanical performance, as well as their toughening effect toward polyesters. Thermal gravimeter analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed enhanced thermal stability by 76 °C higher in decomposition temperature (Td) of the POSS PUs, and 22 °C higher glass transition temperature (Tg) when compared with control PU without POSS. Static contact angle results showed a significant increment of 49.8° and 53.4° for the respective surface hydrophobicity and lipophilicity measurements. More importantly, both storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G'') are improved in the hybrid POSS PUs and these parameters can be further adjusted by varying POSS content in the copolymer. As a biodegradable hybrid filler, the as-synthesized POSS PUs also demonstrated a remarkable effect in toughening commercial polyesters, indicating a simple yet useful strategy in developing high-performance polyester for advanced biomedical applications.
