Abstract
Essential oils have been identified as effective natural compounds to prevent bacterial infections and thus are widely proposed as bioactive agents for biomedical applications. Across the literature, various essential oils have been incorporated into electrospun fibres to produce materials with, among others, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. However, limited research has been conducted so far on the effect of these chemical products on the physical characteristics of the resulting composite fibres for extended periods of time. Within this work, electrospun fibres of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were loaded with the essential oil limonene, and the impact of storage conditions and duration (up to 12 weeks) on the thermal degradation, glass transition temperature and mechanical response of the fibrous mats were investigated. It was found that the concentration of the encapsulated limonene changed over time and thus the properties of the PLA-limonene fibres evolved, particularly in the first two weeks of storage (independently from storage conditions). The amount of limonene retained within the fibres, even 4 weeks after fibre generation, was effective to successfully inhibit the growth of model microorganisms Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. The results of this work demonstrate the importance of evaluating physical properties during the ageing of electrospun fibres encapsulating essential oils, in order to predict performance modification when the composite fibres are used as constituents of medical devices.

Abstract
Nowadays, the effective processing of natural monoterpenes that constitute renewable biomass found in post-production waste into products that are starting materials for the synthesis of valuable compounds is a way to ensure independence from non-renewable fossil fuels and can contribute to reducing global carbon dioxide emissions. The presented research aims to determine, based on DFT calculations, the activity and reactivity of limonene, an organic substrate used in previous preparative analyses, in comparison to selected monoterpenes such as cymene, pinene, thymol, and menthol. The influence of the solvent model was also checked, and the bonds most susceptible to reaction were determined in the examined compounds. With regard to EHOMO, it was found that limonene reacts more easily than cymene or menthol but with more difficultly than thymol and pienene. The analysis of the global chemical reactivity descriptors "locates" the reactivity of limonene in the middle of the studied monoterpenes. It was observed that, among the tested compounds, the most reactive compound is thymol, while the least reactive is menthol. The demonstrated results can be a reference point for experimental work carried out using the discussed compounds, to focus research on those with the highest reactivity.

Abstract
Accurate and rapid detection and isolation become indispensable to restrict the spread of COVID-19. Since the start of COVID-19 pandemic in December 2019, many indisposal diagnostic tools are being developed incessantly. Out of all presently used tools, the gold standard rRT- PCR tool having very high sensitivity and specificity is a time consuming complicated molecular technique having requirements of special expensive equipment. Here, the main focus of this work is to develop rapid disposal paper capacitance sensor having simple and easy detection. We discovered a strong interaction between limonin and Spike-glycoprotein of SARS-COV-2 in comparison to its interaction with other similar viruses such as HCOV-OC43, HCOV-NL63, HCOV-HKU1, Influenza B and A viruses. The antibody free capacitive sensor having comb electrode structure was fabricated on whatman paper with drop coating of limonin (extracted using green method from pomelo seeds) and calibrated with known swab samples. The Blind test with unknown swab samples shows high sensitivity of 91.5% and high specificity of 88.37%. Requiring low sample volume and detection time and using biodegradable materials in the sensor fabrication assure the potential application as a point of care disposal diagnostic tool.

Abstract
A nanostructured device based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) loaded with a cross-linked chitosan (CH) emulsion, soy lecithin, and peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) was designed for topical applications using an electrospinning instrument coupled to a rotary drum collector. Different suspensions were obtained by varying the PVA to emulsion ratio (PVA:Em) 87.5:12.5, 82:18, and 75:25, using a PVA solution as a control. ATR-FTIR spectra confirmed the interactions among the components of the system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the mats evinced that the aligned fiber diameter decreased with higher proportions of emulsion while dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed a decrease in the storage modulus. The entrapment of the functionalized emulsions not only improved the elongation of the matrices but also provided them with greater structural integrity compared to the single PVA matrix. The most favorable formulation in terms of mechanical properties was found to be the 82:18 ratio. After 1 h of close contact between the 82:18 matrix and a porcine skin explant, the latter was examined by confocal microscopy, which revealed the localization of the essential oil mainly on the surface of the stratum corneum (SC).However, after 7 h of contact, the distribution of the peppermint EO throughout the viable epidermis was observed, which was further supported by ATR-FTIR studies. Tailored electrospun matrices would have potential applications as devices for topical or transdermal treatments due to their vehiculization role that allows the diffusion of peppermint essential oil as a skin penetration enhancer.

Abstract
With the strengthening of the public awareness of food safety and environmental protection, functional food packaging materials have received widespread attention. Nanofibers are considered as promising packaging materials due to their unique one-dimensional structure (high aspect ratio, large specific surface area) and functional advantages. Electrospinning, as a commonly used simple and efficient method for preparing nanofibers, can obtain nanofibers with different structures such as aligned, core-shell, and porous structures by modifying the devices and adjusting the process parameters. The selection of raw materials and structural design of nanofibers can endow food packaging with different functions, including antimicrobial activity, antioxidation, ultraviolet protection, and response to pH. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the application of electrospun nanofibers in functional food packaging. Advances in electrospinning technology and electrospun materials used for food packaging are introduced. Moreover, the progress and development prospects of electrospun nanofibers in functional food packaging are highlighted. Meanwhile, the application of functional packaging based on nanofibers in different foods is discussed in detail.

Abstract
In the present work, different configurations of nt iartificial neural networks (ANNs) were analyzed in order to predict the experimental diameter of nanofibers produced by means of the electrospinning process and employing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), PVA/chitosan (CS) and PVA/aloe vera (Av) solutions. In addition, gelatin type A (GT)/alpha-tocopherol (α-TOC), PVA/olive oil (OO), PVA/orange essential oil (OEO), and PVA/anise oil (AO) emulsions were used. The experimental diameters of the nanofibers electrospun from the different tested systems were obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ranged from 93.52 nm to 352.1 nm. Of the three studied ANNs, the one that displayed the best prediction results was the one with three hidden layers with the flow rate, voltage, viscosity, and conductivity variables. The calculation error between the experimental and calculated diameters was 3.79%. Additionally, the correlation coefficient (R2) was identified as a function of the ANN configuration, obtaining values of 0.96, 0.98, and 0.98 for one, two, and three hidden layer(s), respectively. It was found that an ANN configuration having more than three hidden layers did not improve the prediction of the experimental diameter of synthesized nanofibers.

Abstract
Today, society has been more aware of healthy food products and related items containing bioactive compounds, which potentially contribute to human health. Unfortunately, the long-term stability and bioactivity of biologically active compounds against environmental factors compromise their target and effective action. In this way, lab-designed vehicles, such as nanoparticles and nanofibers, provide enough properties for their preservation and suitable delivery. Here, the electrospinning technique acts as an effective pathway for fabricating and designing nanofibers for the entrapments of biomolecules, in which several biopolymers such as proteins, polysaccharides (e.g., maltodextrin, agarose, chitosan), silk, among others, can be used as a wall material. It is likely that chitosan is one of the most employed biomaterials in this field. Therefore, in this review, we reveal the latest advances (over the last 2-3 years) in designing chitosan-based electrospun nanofibers and nanocarriers for encapsulation of bioactive compounds, along with the key applications in smart food packaging as well. Key findings and relevant breakthroughs are a priority in this review to provide a cutting-edge analysis of the literature. Finally, particular attention has been paid to the most promising developments.

Abstract
Extracts from plants have been one of the main sources of antioxidants, namely polyphenols. The associated drawbacks, such as instability against environmental factors, low bioavailability, and loss of activity, must be considered during microencapsulation for a better application. Electrohydrodynamic processes have been investigated as promising tools to fabricate crucial vectors to minimize these limitations. The developed microstructures present high potential to encapsulate active compounds and for controlling their release. The fabricated electrospun/electrosprayed structures present different benefits when compared with structures developed by other techniques; they present a high surface-area-to-volume ratio as well as porosity, great materials handling, and scalable production-among other advantages-which make them able to be widely applied in different fields, namely in the food industry. This review presents a summary of the electrohydrodynamic processes, main studies, and their application.

Abstract
In this study, an active packaging containing Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO), a powerful natural antimicrobial agent, encapsulated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber via electrospinning is presented. ZMEO was effective on pathogenic bacteria, particularly Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Listeria monosytogene), fungi and yeasts (Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans). Results showed that the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of fibers had a bead-free and uniform structure. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) revealed that ZMEO was encapsulated into PVA through a physical process, without chemical interaction between the ingredients. Strawberries treated with PVA/ZMEO significantly (p < 0.05) preserved the anthocyanin (18.64%), total phenols (12.95%), antioxidant (22.72%), soluble solids (6.44%), titratable acidity (20.88%), firmness (27.2%), and color (15.55%) compared to the control sample during 15 days of cold storage. According to these findings, electrospinning was an efficient method for encapsulating bioactive compounds. ZMEO loaded into PVA fiber delayed the physiological and biochemical changes of fruits and extended the fruit's shelf-life. This study revealed the benefits of incorporating ZMEO into PVA fiber mats, which could lead to new possibilities for active packaging.

Abstract
Development of food packaging systems containing essential oils (EOs) has gained increased attention recently. However, the instability of EOs restricts their application. Therefore, effective encapsulation of EOs is demanded for their protection and controlled release. In this work, 1,8-cineole, the major component in Eucalyptus globulus essential oil, was encapsulated into hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin to form an inclusion complex, which was then incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan composite polymer to fabricate nanofibrous film via electrospinning. The film with 40% (w/w) of inclusion complexes showed enhanced barrier and mechanical properties, and the release of 1,8-cineole from the film was sustained and dominated by the non-Fick diffusion. Moreover, this film could extend the shelf life of strawberries to 6 days at 25 ℃. This work suggested dual encapsulation of EOs by cyclodextrin and electrospun nanofibers is an ideal strategy to improve the availability of EOs, and the produced film is promising for food preservation.

Abstract
There is an urgent need to develop technologies that can physically manipulate the structure of biocompatible and green polymer materials in order to tune their performance in an efficient, repeatable, easy-to-operate, chemical-free, non-contact, and highly controllable manner. Ultrasound technology produces a cavitation effect that promotes the generation of free radicals, the fracture of chemical chain segments and a rapid change of morphology. The cavitation effects are accompanied by thermal, chemical, and biological effects that interact with the material being studied. With its high efficiency, cleanliness, and reusability applications, ultrasound has a vast range of opportunity within the field of natural polymer-based materials. This work expounds the basic principle of ultrasonic cavitation and analyzes the influence that ultrasonic strength, temperature, frequency and induced liquid surface tension on the physical and chemical properties of biopolymer materials. The mechanism and the influence that ultrasonic modification has on materials is discussed, with highlighted details on the agglomeration, degradation, morphology, structure, and the mechanical properties of these novel materials from naturally derived polymers.

Abstract
Food packaging plays a key role in offering safe and quality food products to consumers by providing protection and extending shelf life. Food packaging is a multifaceted field based on food science and engineering, microbiology, and chemistry, all of which have contributed significantly to maintaining physicochemical attributes such as color, flavor, moisture content, and texture of foods and their raw materials, in addition to ensuring freedom from oxidation and microbial deterioration. Antimicrobial food packaging systems, in addition to their function as conventional food packaging, are designed to arrest microbial growth on food surfaces, thereby enhancing food stability and quality. Nanomaterials with unique physiochemical and antibacterial properties are widely explored in food packaging as preservatives and antimicrobials, to extend the shelf life of packed food products. Various nanomaterials that are used in food packaging include nanocomposites composing nanoparticles such as silver, copper, gold, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, mesoporous silica and graphene-based inorganic nanoparticles; gelatin; alginate; cellulose; chitosan-based polymeric nanoparticles; lipid nanoparticles; nanoemulsion; nanoliposomes; nanosponges; and nanofibers. Antimicrobial nanomaterial-based packaging systems are fabricated to exhibit greater efficiency against microbial contaminants. Recently, smart food packaging systems indicating the presence of spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms have been investigated by various research groups. The present review summarizes recent updates on various nanomaterials used in the field of food packaging technology, with potential applications as antimicrobial, antioxidant equipped with technology conferring smart functions and mechanisms in food packaging.

Abstract
In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and psyllium husk (PSH)/D-limonene electrospun meshes were produced by emulsion electrospinning for use as substrates to prevent the growth of bacteria. D-limonene and modified microcrystalline cellulose (mMCC) were preferred as antibacterial agents. SEM micrographs showed that PVA–PSH electrospun mesh with a 4% amount of D-limonene has the best average fiber distribution with 298.38 ± 62.8 nm. Moreover, the fiber morphology disrupts with the addition of 6% D-limonene. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to analyze the chemical structure between matrix–antibacterial agents (mMCC and D-limonene). Although there were some partial physical interactions in the FT-IR spectrum, no chemical reactions were seen between the matrixes and the antibacterial agents. The thermal properties of the meshes were determined using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal stability of the samples increased with the addition of mMCC. Further, the PVA–PSH–mMCC mesh had the highest value of contact angle (81° ± 4.05). The antibacterial activity of functional meshes against Gram (−) (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram (+) bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) was specified based on a zone inhibition test. PPMD6 meshes had the highest antibacterial results with 21 mm, 16 mm, and 15 mm against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. While increasing the amount of D-limonene enhanced the antibacterial activity, it significantly decreased the amount of release in cases of excess D-limonene amount. Due to good fiber morphology, the highest D-limonene release value (83.1%) was observed in PPMD4 functional meshes. The developed functional meshes can be utilized as wound dressing material based on our data.

Abstract
Recently, using of natural ingredients gains much attention in the field of food science and active packaging. In this study, first, jujube extract was investigated for its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and then, the effect of electrospun PVA/JE (jujube extract loaded into Poly vinyl alcohol) nanofiber as active packaging was evaluated to increase the shelf-life of strawberry. PVA/ZE nanofiber film was prepared using electrospinning method, and their morphology was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fruit preservation abilities of the nanofiber film were tested on strawberries. The strawberries were then kept at 4℃ for 15 days and characterized in terms of their properties (weight loss, TSS, firmness, and sensory analysis). Results indicated that flavonoid content of jujube extract ranged from 4.80 ± 0.01 to 13.54 ± 0.08 mg CEQ/100 g, and the DPPH free radical-scavenging activity was from 210 ± 2.66 to 1498 ± 2.65 (GAE/g DW). The jujube extract also presented potent antibacterial activity against the investigated bacteria and fungi. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of nanofibers had a linear morphology and bead-free structure; however, PVA/JE (jujube extract encapsulated into PVA nanofiber) had strip and flat organization. Strawberries in control group showed signs of decay and a decrease in visual appearance on the 6th. However, fruits in PVA/JE group had acceptable overall appearance for marketing, as no obvious sign of decay was observed on 12th day of storage. Active packaging containing herbal extracts and essential oils preserves the organoleptic and physicochemical properties of the fruits.

Abstract
Food safety is a bottleneck problem. In order to provide information about advanced and unique food packaging technique, this study summarized the advancements of electrospinning technique. Food packaging is a multidisciplinary area involving food science, food engineering, food chemistry, and food microbiology, and the interest in maintaining the freshness and quality of foods has grown considerably. For this purpose, electrospinning technology has gained much attention due to its unique functions and superior processing. Sudden advancements of electrospinning have been rapidly incorporated into research. This review summarized some latest information about food packaging and different materials used for the packaging of various foods such as fruits, vegetables, meat, and processed items. Also, the use of electrospinning and materials used for the formation of nanofibers are discussed in detail. However, in food industry, the application of electrospun nanofibers is still in its infancy. In this study, different parameters, structures of nanofibers, features and fundamental properties are described briefly, while polymers fabricated through electrospinning with advances in food packaging films are described in detail. Moreover, this comprehensive review focuses on the polymers used for the electrospinning of nanofibers as packaging films and their applications for variety of foods. This will be a valuable source of information for researchers studying various polymers for electrospinning for application in the food packaging industry.

Abstract
Recently, Pickering emulsions have been considered as an efficient method to maintain and protect the functional properties of essential oils against the harsh conditions. In this research, the encapsulation of d-limonene, as an aromatic component with several distinct properties, was conducted through optimizing the production of Pickering emulsions stabilized by chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) and using the response surface methodology; independent variables were different concentrations of CSNPs (0.43, 0.25, and 0.07% w/v) and ratio of d-limonene to Pickering emulsions (5, 15, and 25%). The stability of the emulsions increased at higher contents of the CSNPs. By increasing the concentration of CSNPs and ratio of d-limonene to Pickering emulsion, viscosity of Pickering emulsions was considerably increased. Considering the chemical interactions, thermal behaviors, and crystallinity of samples, CSNPs can be used as an appropriate stabilizer for d-limonene-loaded emulsions and a food grade delivery carrier for the bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Polymeric materials, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and ethylene–PVA copolymers (EVOH) are widely used in the food sector as packaging materials because of their excellent properties. TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) show photocatalytic activity; when added to the aforementioned polymers, on the one hand, they are expected to provide bactericidal capacity, whereas on the other hand, they could favor nanocomposite degradation. These types of nanoparticles can be derivatized with cyclodextrin macromolecules (CDs), which can act as food preservative carriers, increasing the packaging food protective properties. In this work, films containing β-Cyclodextrin (βCD)-grafted TiO2 nanoparticles and PVA or EVOH were prepared. Regarding the photocatalytic activity of the nanoparticles and the possible environmental protection, accelerated aging tests for PVA, EVOH, and their composites with cyclodextrin-grafted TiO2 nanoparticle (NP) films were performed by two methods, namely, stability chamber experiments at different conditions of temperature and relative humidity and UV light irradiation at different intensities. After analyzing the systems color changes (CIELAB) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra, it was observed that the film degradation became more evident when increasing the temperature (25–80 °C) and relative humidity percentage (28–80%). There was no significant influence of the presence of CDs during the degradation process. When irradiating the films with UV light, the largest color variation was observed in the nanocomposite films, as expected. Moreover, the color change was more relevant with increasing NP percentages (1–5%) due to the high photocatalytic activity of TiO2. In addition, films were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and variation in the signal intensities was observed, suggesting the increase of the material degradation in the presence of TiO2 NPs.

Abstract
Mini-emulsion polymerization was applied for the synthesis of cross-linked polymeric nanoparticles comprised of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and Triethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) copolymers, used as matrix-carriers for hosting D-limonene. D-limonene was selected as a model essential oil, well known for its pleasant odor and its enhanced antimicrobial properties. The synthesized particles were assessed for their morphology and geometric characteristics by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), which revealed the formation of particles with mean diameters at the nanoscale (D[3,2] = 0.135 μm), with a spherical shape, while the dried particles formed larger clusters of several microns (D[3,2] = 80.69 μm). The percentage of the loaded D-limonene was quantified by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), complemented by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis coupled with a pyrolysis unit (Py/GC-MS). The results showed that the volatiles emitted by the nanoparticles were composed mainly of D-limonene (10% w/w of dry particles). Particles subjected to higher temperatures tended to decompose. The mechanism that governs the release of D-limonene from the as-synthesized particles was studied by fitting mathematical models to the release data obtained by isothermal TGA analysis of the dry particles subjected to accelerated conditions. The analysis revealed a two-stage release of the volatiles, one governed by D-limonene release and the other governed by TEGDMA release. Finally, the antimicrobial potency of the D-limonene-loaded particles was demonstrated, indicating the successful synthesis of polymeric nanoparticles loaded with D-limonene, owing to enhanced antimicrobial properties. The overall performance of these nanoparticles renders them a promising candidate material for the formation of self-sterilized surfaces with enhanced antimicrobial activity and potential application in food packaging.

Abstract
Blue luminescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared from cyanobacteria by a hydrothermal method. The PL quantum yields of the obtained CQDs was 5.30%. Cyanobacteria-based carbon quantum dots/polyvinyl alcohol/nanocellulose composite films were prepared, which could emit bright blue under UV light. FTIR characterization showed that the composite films had hydroxyl groups on the surface and no new groups were formed after combining the three materials. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra revealed that the emission of the prepared CQDs was excitation dependent. Studies on the water resistance performance and light barrier properties of the composite films showed that they possessed higher water resistance properties and better UV/infrared light barrier properties. Therefore, we report the cyanobacteria-based carbon quantum dots/polyvinyl alcohol/nanocellulose composite films have the potential to be applied in flexible packaging materials, anti-fake materials, UV/infrared light barrier materials and so on.
