Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral mucositis significantly compromises the quality of life for patients undergoing cancer therapies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of natural products in either preventing or alleviating oral mucositis resulting from cancer treatments. METHODS A systematic review and network meta-analysis were conducted, sourcing data from the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Airiti Library, and Wan Fang Data Knowledge Service Platform until August 2023. The study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021285433). Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis (CINeMA) and R software 4.1.3 were used for analysis. RESULTS From 1556 identified articles, 36 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were analyzed, involving 2083 patients. Honey, notably, was found to significantly reduce the overall incidence of oral mucositis compared to standard care, with a relative risk (RR) of 0.80 (95% CI: 0.67-0.96). It was particularly effective against moderate-to-severe oral mucositis (grade ≥ 2), reducing incidence with RR of 0.48 (95% CI: 0.30-0.75) versus placebo and 0.56 (95% CI: 0.34-0.93) against standard care. Other natural products, including propolis, chamomile, and P. major L., also demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing the incidence of oral mucositis. Regarding pain relief, honey, and P. major L. emerged as effective, significantly reducing pain severity with a mean difference (MD) of -2.96 (95% CI: -3.80 to -1.94) compared to placebo. CONCUSSION This network meta-analysis supports the use of honey, propolis, chamomile, and P. major L. as effective natural products in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis among cancer patients. Specifically, honey is highlighted for its significant impact on reducing both the overall incidence and the severity of moderate-to-severe oral mucositis. By leveraging their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, integrating these natural products into the standard care regimen could markedly improve the well-being of individuals undergoing cancer therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral mucositis is one of the most common complications following chemotherapy and/or head and neck radiotherapy. Various treatments for oral mucositis have been proposed. However, there has still been no review of the most frequent and most effective type of therapy to treat oral mucositis. This systematic review aims to determine the most frequent and effective types of therapy to treat and reduce the severity of oral mucositis. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION The literature search was carried out using PRISMA guidelines. Publications included from 2010 to June 2021 with a clinical trial, prospective, and retrospective observational research design. The following databases were used: PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Wiley Online Library. The search was for limited articles published in English, which were screened and analyzed by three authors. The risk of bias of each study was also assessed by three authors simultaneously, using different types of instruments depending on its study design. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS Forty-seven of 1274 journals were included. From 3577 subjects, oral mucositis was more common in males than females (2.12: 1), with a mean age of 56.39 (18-90 years). The most commonly used types of therapy are low-level laser therapy (396 subjects) and lysozyme-based compounds (314 subjects). Meanwhile, the most effective type of therapy is low-level laser therapy. CONCLUSIONS Low-level laser therapy is the most commonly used oral mucositis therapy and is also the most effective in reducing the degree of oral mucositis and associated pain.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) is a bee product produced by young adult worker bees, composed of water, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, rich in bioactive components with therapeutic properties, such as free fatty acids, mainly 10-hydroxy-trans-2-decenoic acid (10-H2DA) and 10-hydroxydecanoic acid (10-HDA), and major royal jelly proteins (MRJPs), as well as flavonoids, most flavones and flavonols, hormones, vitamins and minerals. In vitro, non-clinical and clinical studies have confirmed its vital role as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. This narrative review discusses the possible effects of royal jelly on preventing common complications of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as inflammation, oxidative stress and intestinal dysbiosis, from the viewpoint of predictive, preventive and personalised medicine (PPPM/3PM). It is concluded that RJ, predictively, can be used as a non-pharmacological therapy to prevent and mitigate complications related to NCDs, and the treatment must be personalised.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the world. Lifestyle and eating patterns may have a significant impact on the prevention of this type of cancer. Bioactive food ingredients influence the gut microbiome and can have a protective effect. Bee products (honey, propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom) or pharmacologically active fractions obtained from them are widely used in many fields of medicine, pharmacy, and cosmetics. Some evidence suggests that bee products may have anti-cancer potential. The main bioactive components with anti-colon cancer potential from propolis and bee honey are polyphenols such as pinocembrin, galangin, luteolin, CAPE, Artepilin C, chrysin, caffeic, and p-coumaric acids. This review is focused on the new data on epidemiology, risk factors for colon cancer, and current reports on the potential role of bee products in the chemoprevention of this type of cancer.

Abstract
Most effective anticancer drugs normally generate considerable cytotoxicity in normal cells; therefore, the preferential activation of apoptosis in cancer cells and the reduction of toxicity in normal cells is a great challenge in cancer research. Natural products with selective anticancer properties used as complementary medicine can help to achieve this goal. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of the addition of bee products [propolis (PR) or royal jelly (RJ) or propolis and royal jelly (PR+RJ), 2-10%] to thyme (TH) and chestnut honeys (CH) on the differential anticancer properties, mainly the cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic effects, in normal and cancer hepatic cells. The cytotoxic effects of samples were analyzed using the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay (0-250 mg/mL) and the effects on apoptosis were analyzed using cell cycle analysis, TdT-dUTP terminal nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay, DR5 (Death Receptor 5) and BAX (BCL-2-Associated X) activation, and caspases 8, 9, and 3 activities. Both honey samples alone and honey mixtures had no or very little apoptotic effect on normal cells. Antioxidant honey mixtures enhanced the apoptotic capacity of the corresponding honey alone via both extrinsic and intrinsic pathways. Of all the samples, chestnut honey enriched with 10% royal jelly and 10% propolis (sample 14, CH+10RJ+10PR) showed the highest apoptotic effect on tumor liver cells. The enrichment of monofloral honey with bee products could be used together with conventional anticancer treatments as a dietary supplement without side effects. On the other hand, it could be included in the diet as a natural sweetener with high added value.

Abstract
In recent years, evidence has shown the potential therapeutic effects of different natural compounds for the prevention and treatment of radiotherapy-induced mucositis (RIOM). RIOM represents one of the most frequent side effects associated with anti-neoplastic treatments affecting patients' quality of life and treatment response due to radiation therapy discontinuation. The innate radio-protective ability of natural products obtained from plants is in part due to the numerous antioxidants possessed as a part of their normal secondary metabolic processes. However, oxygen presence is a key point for radiation efficacy on cancer cells. The aim of this review is to describe the most recent evidence on radiation-induced injury and the emerging protective role of natural compounds in preventing and treating this specific damage without compromising treatment efficacy.

Abstract
After the diagnosis of cancer patients require a lot of information because the disease affects all aspects of life. Some important issues regarding optimal counseling remain to be determined. This includes the time-related relevance of various topics and questions regarding who and when to consult on the topics. We analyzed the answers of 155 women with non-metastatic breast cancer undergoing primary surgery, primary chemotherapy, and having completed adjuvant treatment regarding the above-mentioned issues. We found that counseling must consider the treatment situation. Breast cancer patients in the follow-up phase reported that they preferred being counseled by female consultants. Our results largely support a counseling concept which puts the breast care nurse at the center of interest rather than psychologists and social service workers. A breast care nurse centered counseling system for women with non-metastatic breast cancer appears to meet patients' needs best.

Abstract
Background: Oral mucositis (OM) is one of the most important acute toxicities from radiotherapy (RT) in head and neck cancer patients and can impair oncologic treatment. Dysphagia, dysgeusia, pain, and oral candidiasis are other common toxicities. Brazilian Organic Propolis (BOP) is a recently described propolis variant and BOP types 4 and 6 have shown important antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties.Purpose: To investigate the use of BOP as a preventive and/or complementary therapeutic option for radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis, dysphagia, dysgeusia, pain, and oral candidiasis. Additionally, proinflammatory cytokines were assessed to investigate their anti-inflammatory role.Methods: Sixty patients were included in this randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial. Patients were randomized to receive either aqueous suspension of a BOP or placebo throughout RT. Also, all patients underwent low-level laser therapy as routine oral care. OM, dysphagia, and dysgeusia were assessed weekly according to WHO and NCI scales. Pain-related to OM was assessed according to a Visual Analog Scale and the presence or absence of oral candidiasis was checked by intraoral examination. Protein levels of TNF-α and IL-1β from oral mucosa were assessed by ELISA.Results: Patients in the propolis group had a lower mean score of OM, dysphagia, dysgeusia, and most patients reported moderate pain. Fewer patients developed oral candidiasis in the propolis group, and the number of episodes was lower among patients that used BOP (p < 0.05). In addition, the BOP group presented significantly lower levels of IL-1β since the beginning of treatment when compared with placebo patients (p < 0.05) and a lower level of TNF-α at the end of treatment (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Topic use of BOP reduced TNF-α and IL-1β levels, oral candidiasis episodes, and seems to be a useful complementary option for the prevention and treatment of the main acute oral toxicities of RT.Clinical Trial Registration:http://www.ensaiosclinicos.gov.br/rg/RBR-9f8c78/, identifier RBR-9f8c78

Abstract
Background Oral mucositis (OM) is a critical condition during chemotherapy in both adult and child cancer patients. Paediatric cancer patients have a higher prevalence of OM than adult cancer patients. Honey is a natural product that has been reported to have the best tissue healing properties. The present mini-review focused on the evaluation of the effectiveness of oral care with honey products in the treatment and prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced OM in child patients. Methods A network of electronic English databases including CINAHL, CENTRAL, EMBASE, MEDLINE and PubMed, were used for primary search from April 2010 to April 2020. We have also considered data collected from ClinicalTrials.gov, Web of Science and Google Scholar. PRISMA software was used to build collective data. Controlled trials were included in this review and were critically appraised by Down and Black. The narrative synthesis was performed. Results A total number of 346 data of children and adolescents with cancer were considered in this short review. All patients were from three randomized controlled trial articles and two were non-randomised controlled trial articles. Based on the evidence so far revealed, honey may show an effect in the treatment and prophylaxis of OM. The analysis of collected data revealed that the probability value P<0.05. The honey enhanced recovery time and severity of OM were significantly compared with those without honey treatment receiving group of pediatric patients. Conclusion Honey not only has been shown to have the capability for healing injured tissues but it is also a more economical treatment, and it has fewer side effects compared to synthetic drugs. Honey or honey products can prevent chemotherapy-induced OM (CIOM) and be the best treatment to grade I, II and III CIOM. However, it is disappointing that studies involving children as patients were few, and limited data available so far. ![]()

Abstract
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, after cardiovascular diseases. Increasing patients’ awareness and providing easier access to public information result in greater interest in alternative anticancer or unproven supportive therapies. Fear of cancer and limited trust in the treating physician are also important reasons leading patients to seek these methods. Trust and good communication are essential to achieving truthful collaboration between physicians and patients. Given the popularity of CAM, better knowledge about these alternative practices may help oncologists discuss this issue with their patients. This article objectively reviews the most common unconventional therapies used by cancer patients.

Abstract
Oral mucositis (OM) caused by cancer therapy is the most common adverse reaction in the radiotherapy of head and neck tumors. In severe cases, it can lead to the interruption of treatment, which affects the control of the disease and the quality of life. Shuanghua Baihe Tablet (SBT) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, which is administerd to treat OM in China. It has been clinically effective for more than 30 years, but the underlying mechanism is not completely understood. With the development of multiple omics, it is possible to explore the mechanism of Chinese herbal compound prescriptions. Based on transcriptomics and metabolomics, we explored the underlying mechanism of SBT in the treatment of OM. An OM model of rats was established by 5-FU induction, and SBT was orally administered at dosages of 0.75 and 3 g·kg-1·d-1. In order to search for SBT targets and related metabolites, the dysregulated genes and metabolites were detected by transcriptomics and metabolomics. Immune related indicators such as interleukin-17 (IL-17) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were detected by ELISA. Treg cell disorders was analyzed by flow cytometry. Our results showed that SBT significantly alleviated the symptoms of OM rats and the inflammatory infiltration of ulcer tissues. After SBT administration, inflammatory related metabolic pathways including linoleic acid metabolism, valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis were significantly altered. Furthermore, the production of proinflammatory factors like IL-17 and TNF-α, were also dramatically reduced after SBT administration. Besides, the infiltration degree of Treg cells in the spleen of OM modeling rats was significantly improved by SBT administration, thus maintaining the immune balance of the body. The current study demonstrates that SBT regulates inoleic acid metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism, and inhibits IL-17/TNF signal transduction to restore Treg and Th17 cell homeostasis in OM rats, thereby alleviating chemotherapy-induced OM.

Abstract
Cancer is a prevalent disease worldwide, and treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy sometimes lead to adverse events. Oral mucositis is one of the most disabling adverse events, and clinical guidelines do not take into account nutritional interventions. The primary endpoint was to gather the evidence about the efficacy of nutritional interventions in the prevention and/or treatment of antineoplastic-induced oral mucositis in oncological patients. A bibliographic review was carried out in the PubMed data base by combining MeSH terms with Boolean operators. Articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria; 50 final articles were found. Although further evidence is needed, glutamine, honey, and vitamins appear to be good therapeutic options. The rest of the compounds presented controversial or insufficient results, making it difficult to draw conclusions over their utilization as prevention or treatment options. Little evidence is reported about oral mucositis nutritional interventions in spite of them being attainable and affordable compounds. Scarce evidence is shown in paediatric patients compared with adults. Developing higher quality studies and combinations with the compounds researched is necessary for creating a stronger body of evidence.

Abstract
Background Nattokinase (NK) is a promising alternative in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases due to its potent fibrinolytic activity. In this study, we investigated the effect of crude nattokinase extract on the healing of acetic acid-induced oral mucositis in mice. Methods Bacillus subtilis culture media (BSCM) was isolated into the supernatant, named nattokinase crude extract (NCE), and the pellet was named Bacillus subtilis mass (BSM). An oral mucositis model was established in mice by applying 50% glacial acetic acid to the buccal mucosa. According to the treatment conditions, the mice were divided into BSCM, NCE, BSM and phosphate buffered saline (PBS) groups. The weight of the mice, oral mucositis healing score and histopathological examination were used to evaluate the treatment. Results Fibrinolytic activities of BSCM, NCE and BSM were approximately 8069, 10,800 and 80 U/ml, respectively. The weight gain of mice in the NCE group was significantly different from the PBS group after three days’ treatment (p < 0.05). The oral mucositis score of NCE group was significantly higher than other groups (p < 0.05). The differences in histopathology scores between the NCE and other groups were statistically significant (p < 0.01). Conclusions NCE could possess remarkable potential to reduce pain and promote oral mucositis healing with minimal safety concerns. In this study, we first report that NCE from the supernatant of Bacillus subtilis can promote the healing of oral mucositis, which extends the application scope of NK.

Abstract
Background and aim Hematopoietic toxicities are a serious consequence of myelosuppressive CT that may result in dose reductions, delays or even discontinuation of CT, which, in turn, may compromise patient outcomes. Concerns about tolerability and costs of CSFs are still ongoing, therefore the potential use of supportive therapeutics agents are still of interest. Experimental procedure We performed a monocentric, phase II study using Simon's two-stage design. The primary endpoint was the evaluation of the potential clinical benefit of a special kind of honey (Life-Mel Honey) administered prophylactically to reduce the incidence of hematopoietic toxicities following chemotherapy. We have enrolled patients undergoing adjuvant or first-line chemotherapy. Results and conclusion From November 2013 to May 2014 (First stage) and from November 2014 to April 2016 (Second stage), 39 patients were enrolled at our Institution. The majority of patients was male (24/39, 61.5%), medium age was 60.4 years (range 34–77 years). The median follow up was 74.5 days (SD +/- 28.5). Overall, the majority of patients could underwent their chemoterapy with a regular schedule (25/39, 64.1%), while 9/39 patients (23.1%) need to delay chemotherapy due to hematological adverse events of various grade. Ten/39 patients (25.6%) had a grade 1 neutrophils count decreased, 56.4% a grade 1 platelets count decrease and 64.1% a grade 1 hemoglobin decrease. Therefore, Life-Mel Honey showed an interesting profile to reduce hematological toxicities. The proportion of responses is sufficiently high to recommend this honey to go to a next step in the clinical trial phase.

Abstract
Propolis is a resinous substance produced by bees that exhibits antimicrobial, immunostimulatory and antioxidant activity. Its use is common in functional foods, cosmetics and traditional medicine despite the fact that it demonstrates low extraction yields and inconsistency in non-toxic solvents. In this work, a new encapsulation and delivery system consisting of liposomes and cyclodextrins incorporating propolis polyphenols has been developed and characterized. The antioxidant, antimutagenic and antiaging properties of the system under normal and UVB-induced oxidative stress conditions were investigated in cultured skin cells and/or reconstituted skin model. Furthermore, the transcript accumulation for an array of genes involved in many skin-related processes was studied. The system exhibits significant polyphenol encapsulation efficiency, physicochemical stability as well as controlled release rate in appropriate conditions. The delivery system can retain the anti-mutagenic, anti-oxidative and anti-ageing effects of propolis polyphenols to levels similar and comparable to those of propolis methanolic extracts, making the system ideal for applications where non-toxic solvents are required and controlled release of the polyphenol content is desired.

Abstract
As the effectiveness of glutamine supplementation for oral mucositis (OM) in patients with cancer remains controversial, a comprehensive summary and analysis of available evidence is necessary. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to evaluate the benefits of glutamine supplementation on OM and OM-related adverse reactions in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy (CT) and/or radiotherapy (RT), using data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched for RCTs on the use of glutamine for treating OM, published until September 11, 2020. Risk ratios (RRs) or standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using RevMan 5.3. Fifteen studies with 988 participants were included. Glutamine did not reduce the incidence of OM (RR 0.94), but it reduced the severity of OM (SMD -0.73) and incidence of severe OM (RR 0.41). Additionally, glutamine reduced the incidence of opioid analgesic use (RR 0.84), feeding tube use (RR 0.46), hospitalization (RR 0.39), and treatment interruption (RR 0.49) caused by OM. Glutamine effectively improved OM and reduced OM-related adverse reactions in patients with cancer receiving CT and/or RT.

Abstract
In recent times, the use of natural products has gained momentum, either as a treatment or as adjuvants for other drugs in the treatment of different conditions. Propolis is a natural substance produced by bees which has proven useful for treating periodontal disease. This systematic review and meta-analysis gather evidence of the effectiveness of propolis in this kind of condition. The MEDLINE, CENTRAL, PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched for scientific articles to identify the findings published up to October 2020. The MeSH phrases used in the search were: “periodontal diseases AND propolis treatment”; “gingivitis AND propolis treatment”; “periodontitis AND propolis treatment”; “propolis treatment AND oral health”; “propolis AND oxidative stress AND periodontitis”. The Boolean operator “AND” was used to combine the searches. Randomized trials where propolis was used in the treatment of different periodontal conditions were included. Non-randomized clinical studies were systematically reviewed and 224 studies were detected, eight of which met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Only three of these were selected for quantitative synthesis. In conclusion, propolis is safe to use and can improve the results of periodontal disease treatment, reducing probing pocket depth compared with treatment with a placebo (difference in means, fixed effects −0.67 [95% CI: −0.84, −0.50]).

Abstract
BACKGROUND and purpose: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is frequently used among cancer patients. It is unclear whether and how far patients adapt CAM to the treatment situation. The objective is to assess the changes of CAM use between radiotherapy for breast cancer and the follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS 107 patients who participated in a study assessing the possible effects of vitamin D and selenium on radiation-induced skin toxicity completed the CAM-PRIO (Working Group for Prevention and Integrative Oncology of the German Cancer Society) questionnaire during and after radiotherapy. The results were compared. RESULTS Overall, 79.8% of the patients used at least one CAM method. Supplementation with vitamin D (49.4%) and selenium (28.7%) and prayer (37.1%) were the methods most used. After completing radiotherapy, many patients started using selenium, vitamin D, relaxation techniques, and yoga to a greater extent. Prior chemotherapy or concurrent endocrine treatments were not associated with the changes in CAM use. CONCLUSION CAM use is mainly reported to be a static phenomenon. However, this study shows that this is not the case and that after the end of radiotherapy patients started using new CAM methods or increased the number of methods used.

Abstract
Honeybee products are a great source of polyphenols with recognized applications in dental medicine. Although their biological mechanisms in oral diseases are not fully understood, numerous in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies have reported promising results in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. Bioactivities, such as antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasite, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, recommend their future study in order to develop efficient alternatives in the management of widespread oral conditions, such as dental caries and periodontitis. The most investigated mechanisms of polyphenols in oral health rely on their ability to strengthen the dental enamel, decrease the development of dental plaque formation, inhibit the progression of dental caries and development of dental pathogens and show anti-inflammatory properties. These features recommend them as useful honeybee candidates in the management of emerging oral diseases.

Abstract
Molecular targeted therapies are commonly used in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However, the efficacy and safety of these therapeutic interventions require enhancement to improve prognosis in these patients. Royal jelly (RJ) has anti-cancer effects and adverse events across a variety of types of malignancy. The present study investigated the detailed mechanism underlying the effects of oral administration of RJ in patients with advanced RCC that were treated with molecular targeted agents in a randomized clinical trial. The study cohort comprised 16 patients treated with RJ and 17 patients treated with a placebo. Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The results of the present study demonstrated a larger decrease in tumor size upon supplementing patients with RJ following molecular targeted therapy compared with that in patients administered with the placebo. Patients exhibited reduced anorexia and fatigue in the RJ group compared with the placebo group. The relative dose intensity for patients in the RJ group was higher than that in patients in the placebo group. Post- and pre-treatment ratios of the serum levels of TNF-α and TGF-β in patients in the RJ group were lower than those in patients in the placebo group, and these ratios correlated with decreasing tumor size and frequency of anorexia or fatigue in patients. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicated that oral intake of RJ improved the efficacy and safety of molecular targeted therapy in patients with RCC and changed the levels of TNF-α and TGF-β in the serum of patients, which is speculated to serve an important role in RJ-induced biological activities.

Abstract
In order to relieve pain due to oral mucositis, we attempted to develop mucoadhesive microparticles containing indomethacin (IM) and gel preparations with IM microparticles that can be applied to the oral cavity. The mucoadhesive microparticles were prepared with a simple composition consisting of IM and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Two kinds of PVA with different block properties were used, and microparticles were prepared by heating-filtration and mixing-drying. From the X-ray powder diffraction patterns, differential scanning calorimetry thermograms, and morphological features of the IM microparticles, IM should exist as polymorphic forms in the microparticles. Rapid drug release properties were observed in the IM microparticles. Increased drug retention was observed in IM microparticles containing PVA, and the IM-NK(50) gel, using a common block character PVA and heating-filtration, showed good long-term drug retention properties. In vivo experiments showing significantly higher drug concentrations in the oral mucosa were observed with IM microparticles prepared by heating-filtration, and the IM-NK(50) gel maintained significantly higher drug concentrations in the oral mucosa. From these results, the IM-NK(50) gel may be useful as a preparation for relieving oral mucositis pain.

Abstract
Propolis is a potent anti-microbial and natural anti-inflammatory by-product obtained from the beehive. Studies have demonstrated the superior biocompatibility and anti-microbial properties of propolis as compared to calcium hydroxide. However, its effect on postoperative endodontic pain is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of Chinese propolis paste as an intracanal medicament on postoperative endodontic pain intensities compared with calcium hydroxide (control) at different time intervals in necrotic teeth with periapical radiolucency. Eighty patients with single-rooted necrotic teeth with visible periapical radiolucency were recruited and randomly allocated to either the calcium hydroxide or propolis groups. After chemo-mechanical preparation and intracanal medicament insertion, patients were given the VAS (visual analogue scale) to record pain scores. Inter-group data were compared and analyzed using two-way repeated measure ANOVA (Bonferroni test). A p-value of < 0.025 was considered significant. In total, >78% of the patients experienced no or only mild post-operative pain in both the groups at all time intervals, without any significant difference in pain scores between the two groups (p > 0.025). An overall flare-up rate of 14.8% was found. The results suggest that either of these medicaments can be used as an inter-appointment medication for the prevention of postoperative pain in necrotic cases.
