Etlingera elatior-Mediated Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles and Their Application as Electrochemical Current Enhancer

Functionalization of Screen-Printed Electrodes with Grape Stalk Waste Extract-Assisted Synthesized Silver and Gold Nanoparticles: Perspectives of Electrocatalytically Enhanced Determination of Uranyl Ion and Other Heavy Metals Ions

Recently, nanotechnology and nanoparticles (NPs) such as AgNPs and AuNPs have become important in analytical chemistry due to their great potential to improve the performance of electrochemical sensors. In this work, Ag and Au nanoparticles have been synthesized using a green route in which a grape stalk waste extract is used as a reducing agent to obtain metallic nanoparticles. These NPs were used to customize the surface of commercial screen-printed electrodes (SPCNFEs). The spin-coating method was used to modify commercial SPCNFEs under a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting electrodes were used in a determination study of Cd(II), Pb(II), and U(VI) with differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The customized green AgNPs and AuNPs electrodes presented higher sensitivity and electroanalytical performance than the non-modified SPCNFE. The results showed that the best analytical parameters were obtained with the green, silver nanoparticle SPCNFEs, with a LOD of 0.12 μg L^-1 for Pb(II), which is a lower value compared to the most restrictive regulation guidelines. Additionally, the U(VI) ion was successfully determined using the developed G-AgNPs-SPCNFE in spiked tap water, showing comparable results with the ICP-MS technique.

Biogenic Synthesis of Copper-Based Nanomaterials Using Plant Extracts and Their Applications: Current and Future Directions

Plants have been used for multiple purposes over thousands of years in various applications such as traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. More recently, the special properties of phytochemicals within plant extracts have spurred researchers to pursue interdisciplinary studies uniting nanotechnology and biotechnology. Plant-mediated green synthesis of nanomaterials utilises the phytochemicals in plant extracts to produce nanomaterials. Previous publications have demonstrated that diverse types of nanomaterials can be produced from extracts of numerous plant components. This review aims to cover in detail the use of plant extracts to produce copper (Cu)-based nanomaterials, along with their robust applications. The working principles of plant-mediated Cu-based nanomaterials in biomedical and environmental applications are also addressed. In addition, it discusses potential biotechnological solutions and new applications and research directions concerning plant-mediated Cu-based nanomaterials that are yet to be discovered so as to realise the full potential of the plant-mediated green synthesis of nanomaterials in industrial-scale production and wider applications. This review provides readers with comprehensive information, guidance, and future research directions concerning: (1) plant extraction, (2) plant-mediated synthesis of Cu-based nanomaterials, (3) the applications of plant-mediated Cu-based nanomaterials in biomedical and environmental remediation, and (4) future research directions in this area.

A Visible Light Driven Photoelectrochemical Chloramphenicol Aptasensor Based on a Gold Nanoparticle-Functionalized 3D Flower-like MoS2/TiO2 Heterostructure

Developing a photoactive material by combining the characteristics of a wide light response range and effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs remains a huge challenge for the construction of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform. Herein, a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)/MoS₂/TiO₂ composite was prepared through the facile hydrothermal method coupled with an in situ photoreduction technology. Benefiting from both the compositional and structure merits, the composite not only extends the absorption range to visible light but also enhances the photoelectric conversion efficiency by transferring photogenerated electrons into the conduction band of semiconductors from the plasmonic AuNP. Meanwhile, the thiolated aptamers were attached to the surface of AuNP/MoS₂/TiO₂ composites through the Au-S bonding to construct a visible light driven PEC aptasensor for ultrasensitive detection chloramphenicol (CAP). In the presence of CAP, the aptamers anchored on the surface of the photoactive materials could specifically recognize CAP and interact with it to form a bioaffinity complex with a steric hindrance effect, resulting in the rapid decrease of photocurrent responses. Based on this photocurrent suppression strategy, the constructed PEC aptasensing platform exhibited a high sensitivity with a wide linear range from 5 pM to 100 nM and a low detection limit of 0.5 pM.

Biosynthesis and characterization of gold nanoparticles using Brazilian red propolis and evaluation of its antimicrobial and anticancer activities

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are highlighted due to their low toxicity, compatibility with the human body, high surface area to volume ratio, and surfaces that can be easily modified with ligands. Biosynthesis of AuNPs using plant extract is considered a simple, low-cost, and eco-friendly approach. Brazilian Red Propolis (BRP), a product of bees, exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. Here, we described the biosynthesis of AuNPs using BRP extract (AuNPextract) and its fractions (AuNPhexane, AuNPdichloromethane, AuNPethyl acetate) and evaluated their structural properties and their potential against microorganisms and cancer cells. AuNPs showed a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 535 nm. The sizes and morphologies were influenced by the BRP sample used in the reaction. FTIR and TGA revealed the involvement of bioactive compounds from BRP extract or its fractions in the synthesis and stabilization of AuNPs. AuNPdichloromethane and AuNPhexane exhibited antimicrobial activities against all strains tested, showing their efficacy as antimicrobial agents to treat infectious diseases. AuNPs showed dose-dependent cytotoxic activity both in T24 and PC-3 cells. AuNPdichloromethane and AuNPextract exhibited the highest in vitro cytotoxic effect. Also, the cytotoxicity of biogenic nanoparticles was induced by mechanisms associated with apoptosis. The results highlight a potential low-cost green method using Brazilian red propolis to synthesize AuNPs, which demonstrated significant biological properties.

Role of gold nanoparticles in advanced biomedical applications

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have generated keen interest among researchers in recent years due to their excellent physicochemical properties. In general, GNPs are biocompatible, amenable to desired functionalization, non-corroding, and exhibit size and shape dependent optical and electronic properties. These excellent properties of GNPs exhibit their tremendous potential for use in diverse biomedical applications. Herein, we have evaluated the recent advancements of GNPs to highlight their exceptional potential in the biomedical field. Special focus has been given to emerging biomedical applications including bio-imaging, site specific drug/gene delivery, nano-sensing, diagnostics, photon induced therapeutics, and theranostics. We have also elaborated on the basics, presented a historical preview, and discussed the synthesis strategies, functionalization methods, stabilization techniques, and key properties of GNPs. Lastly, we have concluded this article with key findings and unaddressed challenges. Overall, this review is a complete package to understand the importance and achievements of GNPs in the biomedical field.

Nanofibrous cosmetic face mask for transdermal delivery of nano gold: synthesis, characterization, release and zebra fish employed toxicity studies

This study involves the generation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) via a novel natural/non-toxic methodology using tea and orange-peel extracts. These were then embedded into a novel blend composed of a polyethylene oxide and gelatin (PEO-Gel) fibre mat. The scanning electron microscopy results indicated that the addition of both collagen (COL) and ascorbic acid (AA) into the PEO-Gel system (PEO-Gel-AA-COL system) enhances the Au NP incorporation into nanofibres leading to a diameter of 164.60 ± 20.95 and 192.43 ± 39.14 nm in contrast to the spraying observed with the Au PEO-Gel system alone. Releasing studies conducted over 30 min indicated that the PEO-Gel-AA-COL-orange peel Au (OpAu) system accounts for a higher content of Au release than the green tea Au (GtAu) NP system where a maximum release could be attained within 10-30 min depending on the amount of Au NPs that have been incorporated. Moreover, the transdermal diffusion studies conducted using Strat membrane indicated that Au NPs from both formulations (PEO-Gel-AA-COL-GtAu nanofibre, PEO-Gel-AA-COL-OpAu nanofibre) have diffused through the stratum corneum and trapped in the dermis and epidermis indicating its transdermal deliverability. Additionally, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay revealed that nanofibres have similar radical scavenging activity like AA standard. Toxicity evaluation on a zebra fish embryo model confirmed that both GtAu NPs and OpAu NPs do not induce any teratogenic activity and are safe to be used in the range of 1.0-167 µg ml-1.
