Automated Photochemically Induced Method for the Quantitation of the Neonicotinoid Thiacloprid in Lettuce

Luminescent Probe Based on Terbium-Carbon Quantum Dots for the Quantification of Imidacloprid in Caneberries

We propose a modification of terbium-sensitized luminescence (TSL) by means of the introduction of nanoparticles to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of the analytical methods. TSL detection is usually based on the complexation between fluorescent organic compounds (the analytes) and terbium. The organic compound is then excited, and, after an energy transfer towards terbium, the latter emits the luminescence signal. Here, the modification consists of the introduction of nanoparticles (carbon quantum dots, CQDs) into the system. The carboxylic groups of CQDs react with terbium, providing an interesting time-resolved luminescence probe. We applied this system for the determination of the neonicotinoid imidacloprid (IMID). When IMID was introduced in the terbium-CQDs system, the luminescent signal (λexc/λem of 256/545 nm) was quenched, proportionally to IMID concentration in the range of 100-2500 ng·mL-1, obtaining a limit of detection of 30 ng·mL-1. A method detection limit of 0.9 mg·kg-1 was reached in caneberries, thus complying with the maximum residue level of 5 mg·kg-1 established by Codex Alimentarius. We performed recovery experiments in caneberries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and mulberries), obtaining recovery yields close to 100% in all cases. These results show that the use of terbium ions-nanoparticles luminescence probes can be useful for screening purposes in quality control laboratories.

Luminescent determination of propineb fungicide by using a carbon quantum dots-europium ions system

We propose a modification of lanthanide-sensitized luminescence (LSL) to increase the selectivity and sensitivity of analytical methods based on this detection. LSL consists in the formation of complexes of lanthanide ions and organic compounds. Then, an intramolecular energy transfer occurs from the excited state of the ligand (organic analyte) to the emitting level of the lanthanide. The utilization of luminescent nanoparticles (carbon quantum dots, CQDs) in LSL systems can enhance their sensitivity and selectivity. CQDs can react with lanthanide ions through their carboxylic groups. These systems can thus be used as time-resolved luminescent probes. Propineb (PPN), a well-known dithiocarbamate fungicide, has been selected as the target analyte to show the advantages of using CQDs in LSL systems. The method proposed is based on the quenching produced by PPN in europium-CQDs luminescence, obtaining a detection limit of 0.03 μg mL^-1 PPN and a method detection limit of 3 mg kg^-1 in capers (bud and fruit), fulfilling the maximum residue limit in these samples (25 mg kg^-1). The results showed that the use of nanoparticles in LSL systems may provide novel and simple analytical methods for the screening of contaminants in the agri-food sector.

Temporal variation analysis and risk assessment of neonicotinoid residues from tea in China

The extensive use of neonicotinoids (NEOs) has caused the release of wide-ranging of residues to the environment and food, and their potential health risks are now receiving more attention. In this study, three surveys were conducted to obtain the overall profiles of NEO residue levels (seven NEOs and one metabolite) in Chinese tea over a period of seven years. A total of 726 tea samples were tested, and nearly 87% of the samples were found to have detectable NEO residues. The overall average detection frequency of acetamiprid was the highest, reaching 73%. Imidacloprid residues in 4.6% of the samples exceeded the Chinese maximum residue limits, whereas clothianidin and nitenpyram had been detected in Chinese tea samples since 2014. The applications of thiacloprid and thiamethoxam gradually increased, and some tea samples with high residue levels appeared in China. These findings signal the replacement of new and old varieties of NEOs in China. Both long- and short-term cumulative exposures to NEOs were calculated based on optimistic and pessimistic models recommended in the EFSA guidelines. In the three survey periods, the average total imidacloprid-equivalent concentrations were 484.63, 1713.36, and 1148.34 μg/kg, respectively. Combined with the refined point estimates and probabilistic models used in this study, the hazard quotients of NEO residues in tea for Chinese tea consumers were found to be low and within the bounds of safety.

Simultaneous determination of acetamiprid and 6-chloronicotinic acid in environmental samples by using ion chromatography hyphenated to online photoinduced fluorescence detector

This study aims to introduce a simple, sensitive, and cost-effective method for the simultaneous determination of acetamiprid and its main metabolite 6-chloronicotinic acid in environmental samples by using a nonsuppressed ion chromatography hyphenated with an online postcolumn photoinduced fluorescence detection system. The fluorescence detector wavelengths λ_ex /λ_em  = 257/382 nm was set for up to 6.0 min for acetamiprid, while λ_ex /λ_em  = 231/370 nm programmed for 6-chloronicotinic acid for the rest of the analysis time. Both samples were treated by applying miniaturized quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method before the separation of analytes on an IonPac^® AS11-HC column by pumping 40 mM NaOH having minuscule content of acetonitrile (5%, v/v) as an eluent. Both intrinsically nonfluorescent analytes were turned-on by online postcolumn photoinduced derivatization, avoiding the need for complex chemical derivatization or addition of a postcolumn extra pump. The developed method was appraised for the analysis of environmental samples, exhibiting excellent linearity (0.050-10 μg/mL) with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.9993 for both analytes. Whereas, obtained limit of detection (0.025-0.0072 μg/mL), recoveries (98.02-116.00%), and inter- and intraday precision (≤3.02 %) were satisfactory for both compounds in environmental samples.

Modern Flow Analysis

A brief overview of articles published in this Special Issue of Molecules titled “Modern Flow Analysis” is provided. In addition to cross-sectional and methodological works, there are some reports on new technical and instrumental achievements. It has been shown that all these papers create a good picture of contemporary flow analysis, revealing the most current trends and problems in this branch of flow chemistry.
