Abstract
A relatively unexplored approach in heterometallic chemistry of transition metals and lanthanides has been developed toward the controlled synthesis of a new family of linear heterotrinuclear Ln(III)-Pd(II)-Ln(III) complexes with the general formula [Ln2Pd(pao)2(NO3)6(MeOH)2(H2O)2]·[Pd(pao)2]4, where LnIII = DyIII (2), GdIII (3), ErIII (4) and YbIII (5). This strategy was based on the diamagnetic 'metalloligand' [Pd(pao)2] (1), where pao- is the anion of 2-pyridinealdoxime, containing two dangling oximate O-atoms which were trans to each other and available for binding with oxophilic lanthanide ions. Because of their trans-configuration, the [Pd(pao)2] 'metalloligand' was able to direct the binding of two {Ln(NO3)3(MeOH)(H2O)} units on opposite sites, thus yielding the reported trinuclear {Ln-Pd-Ln} clusters. Complexes 2-5 constitute a new family of trinuclear heterometallic {Ln2Pd} species, and they represent the first examples of a directional assembly approach towards the coordination of 4f-metal ions. Compounds 2 and 5 exhibit out-of-phase signals under applied dc fields of 300 and 2000 Oe, respectively, characteristics of the slow magnetization relaxation, albeit with very small energy barriers for the magnetization reversal. This was due to the combined onset of fast quantum tunneling and the weak crystal field effects induced by the coordinated ligands. The combined results highlight the potential of using the 'metal complexes as ligands' method to deliberately prepare heterometallic PdII-LnIII complexes with unique structural and interesting physicochemical (magnetic, optical, catalytic) properties.

Abstract
The energetic disorder induced by fluctuating liquid environments acts in opposition to the precise control required for coherence-based sensing. Overcoming fluctuations requires a protected quantum subspace that only weakly interacts with the local environment. We report a ytterbium complex that exhibited an ultranarrow absorption linewidth in solution at room temperature with a full width at half maximum of 0.625 milli-electron volts. Using spectral hole burning, we measured an even narrower linewidth of 410 pico-electron volts at 77 kelvin. Narrow linewidths allowed low-field magnetic circular dichroism at room temperature, used to sense Earth-scale magnetic fields. These results demonstrated that ligand protection in lanthanide complexes could substantially diminish electronic state fluctuations. We have termed this system an "atomlike molecular sensor" (ALMS) and proposed approaches to improve its performance.

Abstract
The reactions between the bis(1,10-phenantro[5,6-b])tetrathiafulvalene triad (L) and the metallo-precursors Yb(hfac)3(H2O)2 (hfac− = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonato anion) and Dy(facam)3 (facam− = 3-trifluoro-acetyl-(+)-camphorato anion) lead to the formation of two dinuclear complexes of formula [Yb2(hfac)6(L)]·2(C7H16) ((1)·2(C7H16)) and [Dy2((+)facam)6(L)]·2(C6H14) ((2)·2(C6H14)). The X-ray structures reveal that the L triad bridges two terminal Yb(hfac)3 or Dy(facam)3 units. (1)·2(C7H16) behaved as a near infrared YbIII centered emitter and a field-induced Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) while (2)·2(C6H14) displayed SMM behavior in both zero- and in-dc field. The magnetization mainly relaxes through a Raman process for both complexes under an optimal applied magnetic field.

Abstract
The development of molecular materials with novel functionality offers promise for technological innovation. Switchable molecules that incorporate redox-active components are enticing candidate compounds due to their potential for electronic manipulation. Lanthanoid metals are most prevalent in their trivalent state and usually redox-activity in lanthanoid complexes is restricted to the ligand. The unique electronic and physical properties of lanthanoid ions have been exploited for various applications, including in magnetic and luminescent materials as well as in catalysis. Lanthanoid complexes are also promising for applications reliant on switchability, where the physical properties can be modulated by varying the oxidation state of a coordinated ligand. Lanthanoid-based redox activity is also possible, encompassing both divalent and tetravalent metal oxidation states. Thus, utilization of redox-active lanthanoid metals offers an attractive opportunity to further expand the capabilities of molecular materials. This review surveys both ligand and lanthanoid centered redox-activity in pre-existing molecular systems, including tuning of lanthanoid magnetic and photophysical properties by modulating the redox states of coordinated ligands. Ultimately the combination of redox-activity at both ligands and metal centers in the same molecule can afford novel electronic structures and physical properties, including multiconfigurational electronic states and valence tautomerism. Further targeted exploration of these features is clearly warranted, both to enhance understanding of the underlying fundamental chemistry, and for the generation of a potentially important new class of molecular material.

Abstract
The coordination reaction of the [Dy(hfac)3(H2O)2] units (hfac− = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with the two quinone-based derivatives 4,7-di-tert-butyl-2-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-oxocyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-ylidene)benzo[d][1,3]dithiole-5,6-dione (L1) and 7,8-dithiabicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,5-diene-3,4-dione,2,5bis(1,1-dimethylethyl) (L2) led respectively to the complexes [Dy(hfac)3(H2O)(L1)] (1) and [Dy(hfac)3(H2O) (L2)]⋅(C6H14)(CH2Cl2) (2)⋅(C6H14)(CH2Cl2). X-ray structures on single crystal of 1 and 2⋅(C6H14)(CH2Cl2) revealed the coordination of the DyIII on the bischelating oxygenated quinone site and the formation of dimeric species through hydrogen bonds. Ac magnetic measurements highlighted field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior with magnetic relaxation through a Raman process.

Abstract
The fused 1,3-dithiole spacer seems to be very suitable for the functionalization of sterically hindered o-quinones with additional groups capable of coordination of metal ions and/or possessing a redox activity. An effective method for the synthesis of sterically hindered o-quinones containing 1,3-diketonate, dinitrile and p-quinone-methide functional groups at the periphery of the ligand has been developed. The novel compounds have rigid and conjugated structures and exhibit properties typical of o-quinones. A study of their monoreduced semiquinone derivatives reveal that the spin density is delocalized across the whole molecule, including peripheral fragments. The first stable o-quinone derivative bearing an annulated thiete heterocycle has been isolated and characterized.

Abstract
The complexes [Dy2(tta)6(H2SQ)] (Dy-H2SQ) and [Dy2(tta)6(Q)]·2CH2Cl2 (Dy-Q) (tta− = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) were obtained from the coordination reaction of the Dy(tta)3·2H2O units with the 2,2′-benzene-1,4-diylbis(6-hydroxy-4,7-di-tert-butyl-1,3-benzodithiol-2-ylium-5-olate ligand (H2SQ) and its oxidized form 2,2′-cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-diylidenebis(4,7-di-tert-butyl-1,3-benzodithiole-5,6-dione (Q). The chemical oxidation of H2SQ in Q induced an increase in the coordination number from 7 to 8 around the DyIII ions and by consequence a modulation of the field-induced Single-Molecule Magnet behavior. Computational results rationalized the magnetic properties of each of the dinuclear complexes.
