Total Versus Inorganic and Organic Species of As, Cr, and Sb in Flavored and Functional Drinking Waters: Analysis and Risk Assessment

Assessment of Ecological and Toxicological State of Soils and Waters in the Neighborhood of Mining Industry Enterprises in the Armenian Highlands

The article presents the results of the seven-year study on the state of arable lands and wastewaters in the districts of mining enterprises in Armenia. An assessment of the ecological and toxicological state of wastewaters and contaminated areas was carried out. Methods for their purification are proposed aimed at their further use and obtainment of environmentally safe agricultural products. An area of about 0.5 ha, next to the rural community of Syunik in southern Armenia, has been polluted for many years by mining sludges from the nearest mine watertight cofferdam of the Zangezur copper-molybdenum combine. Activities have been carried out to clean up the soil in this area. After plowing, soil improvers (zeolite, bentonite, and manure) were introduced into the soil. On-site treatments, soil tillage, and the introduction of soil improvers into the soil was implemented in late autumn. Soil and plant samples were taken to determine the content of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Mo, Ni). In the following spring, the area was planted with potatoes, eggplant, and peas. A rather high yield was obtained. Analysis of plant samples showed that the content of heavy metals does not exceed the permissible level of the international food safety standard. At the same time, soil studies were carried out in the adjacent areas of the Sotk mine, located to the southeast of Lake Sevan. It was revealed that due to the increase in the volume of the mining industry and the amount of rock dumps, the organoleptic and chemical indicators of the waters of the Sotk and Masrik rivers deteriorated. Compared to the previous decade, the amounts of suspended particles per 1 L of water have increased by 210…317.0%, in the waters of Sotk-by 32.1 mg/L, and in the waters of Masrik-by 13.2 mg/L. The same tendency is observed regarding the amounts of nitrates, sulfates, and hydrogen index, which is mainly due to the chemical composition of rocks. They contain a large amount of Ca, K, Na, Mg, etc. This trend is especially noticeable along the rivers, where intensive agriculture, primarily livestock farming is carried out. The material of the work solves a complex of environmental and economic problems. It is aimed at ensuring environmental safety, improving the ecological and resource properties of soils, increasing the productivity of cultural phytocenoses and the sanitary and hygienic quality of food products.

LC/ICP-MS AND COMPLEMENTARY TECHNIQUES IN BESPOKE AND NONTARGETED SPECIATION ANALYSIS OF ELEMENTS IN FOOD SAMPLES

Chemical elements speciation analysis of food samples has been among the most important scientific topics over the last decades. Food samples are comprised of high variety of chemical compounds, from which many can interact with metals and metalloids, forming complex elemental species with various influence on the human body. It is particularly important not only to determine the amount of certain chemical element in food sample but also to identify the form in which given element occurs in given sample. Employment of bespoke and nontargeted speciation methods, with the use of liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC/ICP-MS) and complementary techniques, provides more complete picture on the metals and metalloids speciation in food. This review discusses issues concerning speciation analysis of metals and metalloids in food samples with the use of LC/ICP-MS as a leading technique in elemental speciation nowadays and a complimentary technique intended for their identification. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Sorption of arsenate(Ⅴ) to naturally occurring secondary iron minerals formed at different conditions: The relationship between sorption behavior and surface structure

Arsenic (As) is a problematic pollutant that can cause cancer and other chronic diseases due to its potential toxicity. Iron (oxyhydr)oxides can readily sorb As and play important roles in the geochemical cycle of As. Attention has mainly been given to the affinity and mechanism of As sorption by synthetic pure iron (oxyhydr)oxides, and little is known about the relationship between As behavior and multicomponent secondary iron minerals (SIMs) naturally formed in acid mine drainage (AMD). To investigate this relationship, we performed sorption kinetics, isotherm and competitive sorption experiments to investigate As(V) sorption behaviors on naturally formed SIMs harvested from different runoff zones of an abandoned coal mine. Several spectroscopic analyses were used to evaluate the structural and component changes and phase transformation. Three environmental SIMs formed at nascent (n-SIM), transient (t-SIM) and mature (m-SIM) stages were determined to be similar in the element components of Fe, S and O but different in structure. As(V) sorption behaviors on these environmental SIMs followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the sorption extent followed the sequence of n-SIM > t-SIM > m-SIM. As(V) sorption is not significantly influenced by Na⁺/Ca²⁺ concentration or ionic strength except for that of PO₄^3-, and it slightly decreases as the Cr(Ⅲ) concentration increases but increases with increasing Sb(Ⅲ)/(V) concentration. The results of spectral analyses indicate that As(V) immobilization mainly depends on exchange with SO₄^2- and surface complexation, along with the phase transformation of schwertmannite/jarosite to goethite and other phases. These findings are helpful for better understanding the geochemical behaviors of As(V) associated with environmental SIMs.
