Complexes of Cobalt(II) Iodide with Pyridine and Redox Active 1,2-Bis(arylimino)acenaphthene: Synthesis, Structure, Electrochemical, and Single Ion Magnet Properties

Effects of Bis(imino)acenaphthene (Bian)-Derived Ligands on the Cytotoxicity, DNA Interactions, and Redox Activity of Palladium(II) Bipyridine Complexes

A series of heteroleptic bipyridine Pd(II) complexes based on 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (dpp-Bian) or 1,2-bis[(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (tmp-Bian) were prepared. All complexes were fully characterized by spectrochemical methods, and their crystal structures were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The 72 h stability of heteroleptic bipyridine Pd(II) complexes with Bian ligands under physiological conditions was investigated using ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The anticancer activity of all complexes was assessed in a panel of cancer cell lines in comparison with uncoordinated ligands and clinically used drugs cisplatin and doxorubicin. The ability of the complexes to bind DNA was investigated using several methods, including EtBr replacement assay, density functional theory calculations, circular dichroism spectroscopy, DNA gel electrophoresis, and TUNEL assay. The electrochemical activity of all complexes and the uncoordinated ligands was studied using cyclic voltammetry, and reactive oxygen species production in cancer cells was investigated using confocal microscopy. Heteroleptic bipyridine Pd^II-Bian complexes were cytotoxic in a low micromolar concentration range and showed some selectivity toward cancer cells in comparison with noncancerous MRC-5 lung fibroblasts.

Iridium Complexes with BIAN-Type Ligands: Synthesis, Structure and Redox Chemistry

A series of iridium complexes with bis(diisopropylphenyl)iminoacenaphtene (dpp-bian) ligands, [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)Cl] (1), [Ir(cod)(NO)(dpp-bian)](BF₄)₂ (2) and [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄) (3), were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The structures of 1-3 feature a square planar backbone consisting of two C = C π-bonds of 1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod) and two nitrogen atoms of dpp-bian supplemented with a chloride ion (for 1) or a NO group (for 2) to complete a square-pyramidal geometry. In the nitrosyl complex 2, the Ir-N-O group has a bent geometry (the angle is 125°). The CV data for 1 and 3 show two reversible waves between 0 and -1.6 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Reversible oxidation was also found at E_1/2 = 0.60 V for 1. Magnetochemical measurements for 2 in a range from 1.77 to 300 K revealed an increase in the magnetic moment with increasing temperature up to 1.2 μ_B (at 300 K). Nitrosyl complex 2 is unstable in solution and loses its NO group to yield [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄) (3). A paramagnetic complex, [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄)₂ (4), was also detected in the solution of 2 as a result of its decomposition. The EPR spectrum of 4 in CH₂Cl₂ is described by the spin Hamiltonian Ĥ = gβHŜ with S = 1/2 and g_xx = g_yy = 2.393 and g_zz = 1.88, which are characteristic of the low-spin 5d⁷-Ir(II) state. DFT calculations were carried out in order to rationalize the experimental results.

α-Diimine Cisplatin Derivatives: Synthesis, Structure, Cyclic Voltammetry and Cytotoxicity

Three new Pt(II) complexes [(dpp-DAD)PtCl₂] (I), [(Mes-DAD(Me)₂)PtCl₂] (II) and [(dpp-DAD(Me)₂)PtCl₂] (III) were synthesized by the direct reaction of [(CH₃CN)₂PtCl₂] and corresponding redox-active 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes (DAD). The compounds were isolated in a single crystal form and their molecular structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. The purity of the complexes and their stability in solution was confirmed by NMR analysis. The Pt(II) ions in all compounds are in a square planar environment. The electrochemical reduction of complexes I-III proceeds in two successive cathodic stages. The first quasi-reversible reduction leads to the relatively stable monoanionic complexes; the second cathodic stage is irreversible. The coordination of 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes ligands with PtCl₂ increases the reduction potential and the electron acceptor ability of the DAD ligands. The synthesized compounds were tested in relation to an adenocarcinoma of the ovary (SKOV3).

Evidence for zero-field slow magnetic relaxation in a Co(II) complex with a pseudo-tetrahedral N2I2 environment

Herein, we report on the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a four-coordinate mononuclear Co(II) diiodide complex with the 3,5-dimethylpyrazole ligand. A distorted tetrahedral local coordination environment around the central cobalt ion is formed by the two nitrogen atoms of two monodentate pyrazole ligands and by iodide ions. Direct current (dc) magnetic measurements in combination with ab initio SA-CASSCF/NEVPT2 quantum-chemical calculations revealed a strong easy-axis-type magnetic anisotropy with a record value D_exp = -30.58(3) cm^-1 of the axial zero field splitting parameter for pseudo-tetrahedral Co(II)-based CoL₂Hal₂ complexes. Moreover, it is the only complex in this series demonstrating the slow relaxation of magnetization at zero dc field. The Orbach process is shown to be the dominant mechanism of magnetic relaxations in the high temperature range, while the quantum tunneling of magnetization produces the leading contribution to the overall relaxation at temperatures below 4 K.

MIL-101 (Fe) @Ag Rapid Synergistic Antimicrobial and Biosafety Evaluation of Nanomaterials

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have become popular in recent years as excellent carriers of drugs and biomimetic materials, have provided new research ideas for fighting pathogenic bacterial infections. Although various antimicrobial metal ions can be added to MOFs with physical methods, such as impregnation, to inhibit bacterial multiplication, this is inefficient and has many problems, such as an uneven distribution of antimicrobial ions in the MOF and the need for the simultaneous addition of large doses of metal ions. Here, we report on the use of MIL-101(Fe)@Ag with efficient metal-ion release and strong antimicrobial efficiency for co-sterilization. Fe-based MIL-101(Fe) was synthesized, and then Ag+ was uniformly introduced into the MOF by the substitution of Ag+ for Fe3+. Scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to investigate the synthesized MIL-101(Fe)@Ag. The characteristic peaks of MIL-101(Fe) and silver ions could be clearly seen in the PXRD pattern. Comparing the diffraction peaks of the simulated PXRD patterns clearly showed that MIL-101(Fe) was successfully constructed and silver ions were successfully loaded into MIL-101(Fe) to synthesize an MOF with a bimetallic structure, that is, the target product MIL-101(Fe)@Ag. The antibacterial mechanism of the MOF material was also investigated. MIL-101(Fe)@Ag exhibited low cytotoxicity, so it has potential applications in the biological field. Overall, MIL-101(Fe)@Ag is an easily fabricated structurally engineered nanocomposite with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity.

Tuning the Electronic Properties of Homoleptic Silver(I) bis-BIAN Complexes towards Efficient Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

We report herein the preparation and characterization of six readily assembled bis-coordinated homoleptic silver(I) N,N′-bis(arylimino)acenaphthene (BIAN) complexes of general structure [Ag(I)(BIAN)2]BF4 and the influence of the electronic properties of the ligand substitution pattern on their performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R). All the explored catalysts displayed substantial current enhancements in carbon-dioxide-saturated solvents dependent on the ligated BIAN and no significant concurrent H2 evolution when utilizing 2% H2O as a proton source. Additionally, preliminary studies, employing a drop-casted ink of 0.4 mg cm−2 [Ag(I)(4-OMe-BIAN)2]BF4 (Ag4) immobilized onto carbon paper gas diffusion electrodes in a flow cell with 1M KHCO3 aqueous electrolyte, resulted in a propitious Faradaic efficiency of 51% for CO at a current density of 50 mA cm−2.

Synthesis, structure, magnetic properties and thermal behaviour of Ba–MII (MII = Mn, Co, Cu, and Zn) allylmalonates

A series of Ba-MII complexes with allylmalonic acid anions [BaMII(Amal)2(H2O)3]n (MII = Mn, Co, Cu, and Zn) were synthesized. The magnetic measurements revealed slow magnetic relaxation in non-zero field (HDC = 1500 Oe) for CoII ions.

Generation of a Hetero Spin Complex from Iron(II) Iodide with Redox Active Acenaphthene-1,2-Diimine

The reaction of the redox active 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (dpp-BIAN) and iron(II) iodide in acetonitrile led to a new complex [(dpp-BIAN)Fe^III₂] (1). Molecular structure of 1 was determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The spin state of the iron cation in complex 1 at room temperature and the magnetic behavior of 1 in the temperature range of 2–300 K were studied using Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements, respectively. The neutral character of dpp-BIAN in 1 was confirmed by IR and UV spectroscopy. The electrochemistry of 1 was studied in solution and solid state using cyclic voltammetry. The generation of the radical anion form of the dpp-BIAN ligand upon reduction of 1 in a CH₂Cl₂ solution was monitored by EPR spectroscopy.
