Silica Aerogels/Xerogels Modified with Nitrogen-Containing Groups for Heavy Metal Adsorption

Silica-Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Composite Aerogel: A Promising Electrolyte for Solid-State Sodium Batteries

The transition from fossil fuels is in part limited by our inability to store energy at different scales. Batteries are therefore in high demand, and we need them to store more energy, be more reliable, durable and have less social and environmental impact. Silica-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite aerogels doped with sodium perchlorate were synthesized as novel electrolytes for potential application in solid-state sodium batteries. The aerogels, synthesized by one-pot synthesis, are light (up to 214 kg m-3), porous (~85%), exhibit reduced shrinkage on drying (up to 12%) and a typical silica aerogel microstructure. The formation of a silica network and the presence of PVA and sodium perchlorate in the composite were confirmed by FTIR and TGA. The XRD analysis also shows that a predominantly amorphous structure is obtained, as crystalline phases of polymer and salt are present in a very reduced amount. The effects of increasing polymer and sodium salt concentrations on the ionic conductivity, assessed via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, were studied. At a PVA concentration of 15% (w/w silica precursors), the sodium conduction improved significantly up to (1.1 ± 0.3) × 10-5 S cm-1. Thus, this novel material has promising properties for the envisaged application.

Chitosan-Silica Composite Aerogel for the Adsorption of Cupric Ions

A chitosan-silica hybrid aerogel was synthesized and presented as a potential adsorbent for the purification of cupric ion-contaminated media. The combination of the organic polymer (chitosan), which can be obtained from fishery wastes, with silica produced a mostly macroporous material with an average pore diameter of 33 µm. The obtained aerogel was extremely light (56 kg m-3), porous (96% porosity, 17 cm3 g-1 pore volume), and presented a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (SBET) of 2.05 m2 g-1. The effects of solution pH, aerogel and Cu(II) concentration, contact time, and counterion on cupric removal with the aerogel were studied. Results showed that the initial pH of the cation-containing aqueous solution had very little influence on the removal performance of this aerogel. According to Langmuir isotherm, this material can remove a maximum amount of ca. 40 mg of cupric ions per gram and the kinetic data showed that the surface reaction was the rate-limiting step and equilibrium was quickly reached (in less than one hour). Thus, the approach developed in this study enabled the recovery of waste for the preparation of a novel material, which can be efficiently reused in a new application, namely water remediation.

Green composite aerogel based on citrus peel/chitosan/bentonite for sustainable removal Cu(II) from water matrices

Here, we propose a green and sustainable 3D porous aerogel based on citrus peel (CP), chitosan (CS), and bentonite (BT). This aerogel is prepared through a simple sol-gel and freeze-drying process and is designed for efficient capture of Cu(II) ions from water matrices. CCBA-2, with its abundance of active binding sites, exhibits an impressive Cu(II) adsorption yield of 861.58 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics follow the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. In the presence of coexisting mixed-metal ions, CCBA-2 demonstrates a significantly higher selectivity coefficient (KdCu = 1138.5) for removing Cu(II) ions compared to other toxic metal ions. Furthermore, the adsorption of Cu(II) ions by CCBA-2 is not significantly affected by coexisting cations/anions, ionic strength, organic matter, or different water matrices. Dynamic fixed-bed column experiments show that the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions reaches 377.4 mg/g, and the Yoon-Nelson model accurately describes the adsorption process and breakthrough curve. Through experiments, FTIR, and XPS analyses, we propose a reasonable binding mechanism between CCBA-2 and metal cations, involving electrostatic attraction and chemical chelation between Cu(II) and the functional groups of the aerogel. CCBA-2 saturated with Cu(II) ions can be successfully regenerated by elution with 1 M HNO3, with only a slight decrease in adsorption efficiency (5.3%) after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, CCBA-2 offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly material that can be considered as a viable alternative for the green and efficient removal of toxic Cu(II) ions from wastewater.

Thermodynamics of Azo Dye Adsorption on a Newly Synthesized Titania-Doped Silica Aerogel by Cogelation: A Comparative Investigation with Silica Aerogels and Activated Charcoal

The adsorption isotherms of azo dyes on a newly synthesized titania-doped silica (TdS) aerogel compared to silica aerogels and activated charcoal (AC) are systematically investigated. Monolithic TdS aerogels were synthesized by the cogelation process followed by supercritical drying of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a gel precursor and titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) as a metal complex precursor for co-polymerization in ethanol solvent. An acid-base catalyst was used for the hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS and TTIP. The effect of Ti⁴⁺ doping in a silica aerogel on the mesoporous structure and the adsorption capacity of methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes were evaluated from the UV-vis absorption spectra. In order to compare the adsorption isotherms, the surface areas of silica and TdS aerogels were first normalized with respect to AC, as adsorption is a surface phenomenon. The azo dye equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using different isotherm equations and found to follow the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities for the adsorbent TdS aerogel normalized with the AC of the Langmuir isotherm are 131.58 and 159.89 mg/g for MB and CV dyes, respectively. From the Langmuir curve fitting, the Q _max value of the TdS aerogel was found to increase by 1.22-fold compared to AC, while it increased 1.25-1.53-fold compared to the silica aerogel. After four cycles, regeneration efficiency values for MB and CV dyes are about 84 and 80%, respectively. The study demonstrates the excellent potential and recovery rate of silica and TdS aerogel adsorbents in removing dyes from wastewater. The pore volume and average pore size of the new aerogel, TdS, were found to be lower than those of the silica aerogel. Thus, a new TdS aerogel with a high capacity of adsorption of azo dyes is successfully achieved.

A New Schiff Base Organically Modified Silica Aerogel-Like Material for Metal Ion Adsorption with Ni Selectivity

Nickel has several industrial uses and is a valuable metal, making its selective separation and recycling a priority goal. A novel adsorbent, a Schiff base organically modified silica (ORMOSIL) aerogel, was prepared, for selective nickel removal from wastewater with other metal ions, by including a salen ionophore in the silica-based network. The newly developed adsorbent takes advantage of the salen’s selectivity and of the high porosity of silica aerogels. The aerogel-like adsorbent was prepared via sol-gel chemistry, using a coprecursor approach and ambient pressure drying. The inclusion of the Schiff base in the silica network was accomplished by reacting an amine-containing silica precursor with an aldehyde and confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. The adsorbent shrunk only 10% after evaporative drying, which resulted in a highly porous material (85% porosity, 4 cm3 g−1 specific pore volume). The low surface area of 28 m2 g-1 was due to the predominantly macroporous structure of the material (mean pore diameter of 563 nm). Adsorption isotherms and kinetic curves with single and binary mixtures of cations at room temperature were used to assess the selectivity of the adsorbent. The adsorption follows a BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) trend. Due to the proximity of the oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the salen and steric hindrance from their neighboring atoms, it is likely that only the smallest hydrated cations can act as a coordination center and interact with both donor atoms. Thus, nickel was fairly removed (50 mg g-1), while other cations barely interacted with the adsorbent (cadmium adsorption maximum of 5 mg g-1). The estimated selectivity coefficient for nickel ranges from 1.8, in relation to copper, to 9.4 relatively to cadmium, which can be relevant for the separation of nickel in several industrial contexts, for instance, from electroplating sludge.

Porous Aerogels and Adsorption of Pollutants from Water and Air: A Review

Aerogels are open, three-dimensional, porous materials characterized by outstanding properties, such as low density, high porosity, and high surface area. They have been used in various fields as adsorbents, catalysts, materials for thermal insulation, or matrices for drug delivery. Aerogels have been successfully used for environmental applications to eliminate toxic and harmful substances-such as metal ions or organic dyes-contained in wastewater, and pollutants-including aromatic or oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs)-contained in the air. This updated review on the use of different aerogels-for instance, graphene oxide-, cellulose-, chitosan-, and silica-based aerogels-provides information on their various applications in removing pollutants, the results obtained, and potential future developments.

In situ remediation efficacy of hybrid aerogel adsorbent in model aquatic culture of Paramecium caudatum exposed to Hg(II)

Silica-gelatin hybrid aerogel of 24 wt% gelatin content is an advanced functional material suitable for the high performance selective adsorption of aqueous Hg(II). The remediation efficacy of this adsorbent was tested under realistic aquatic conditions by exposing cultures of Paramecium caudatum to Hg(II) and monitoring the model cultures by time-lapse video microscopy. The viability of Paramecium was quantified by analyzing the pixel differences of the sequential images caused by the persistent movement (motility) of the cells. The viability of Paramecium displays a clear exposure-response relationship with Hg(II) concentration. Viability decreases with increasing Hg(II) concentration when the latter is higher than 125 μg L^-1. In the presence of 0.1 mg mL^-1 aerogel adsorbent, the viability of the cells decreases only at Hg(II) concentrations higher than 500 μg L^-1, and 220 min survival time was measured even at 1000 μg L^-1 Hg(II). The effective toxicity of Hg(II) is lower in the presence of the aerogel, because the equilibrium concentration of aqueous Hg(II) is low due to adsorption, thus Paramecium cells do not uptake as much Hg(II) as in the un-remediated cultures. Video imaging of Paramecium cultures offers a simple, robust and flexible method for providing quantitative information on the effectiveness of advanced materials used in adsorption processes for water treatment.

Methylene Blue Release from Chitosan/Pectin and Chitosan/DNA Blend Hydrogels

Chitosan/DNA blend hydrogel (CDB) and chitosan/pectin blend hydrogel (CPB) were synthesized using an emulsion (oil-in-water) technique for the release of methylene blue (model molecule). Both hydrogels were characterized by swelling assays, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), before and after the methylene blue (MB) loading. Higher swelling degrees were determined for both hydrogels in simulated gastric fluid. FT-IR spectra inferred absorption peak changes and shifts after MB loading. The TGA results confirmed changes in the polymer network degradation. The SEM images indicated low porosities on the hydrogel surfaces, with deformed structure of the CPB. Smoother and more uniform surfaces were noticed on the CDB chain after MB loading. Higher MB adsorption capacities were determined at lower initial hydrogel masses and higher initial dye concentrations. The MB adsorption mechanisms on the hydrogel networks were described by the monolayer and multilayer formation. The MB release from hydrogels was studied in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids, at 25 °C and 37 °C, with each process taking place at roughly 6 h. Higher release rates were determined in simulated gastric fluid at 25 °C. The release kinetics of MB in chitosan/DNA and chitosan/pectin matrices follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism.

Evaluation of Polyurea-Crosslinked Alginate Aerogels for Seawater Decontamination

Polyurea-crosslinked Ca-alginate (X-Ca-alginate) aerogel beads (diameter: 3.3 mm) were evaluated as adsorbents of metal ions, organic solvents, and oils. They were prepared via reaction of an aromatic triisocyanate (Desmodur RE) with pre-formed Ca-alginate wet gels and consisted of 54% polyurea and 2% calcium. X-Ca-alginate aerogels are hydrophobic nanoporous materials (90% v/v porosity), with a high BET surface area (459 m²/g⁻¹), and adsorb Pb^II not only from ultrapure water (29 mg/g⁻¹) but also from seawater (13 mg/g⁻¹) with high selectivity. The adsorption mechanism involves replacement of Ca^II by Pb^II ions coordinated to the carboxylate groups of the alginate backbone. After treatment with a Na₂EDTA solution, the beads can be reused, without significant loss of activity for at least two times. X-Ca-alginate aerogels can also uptake organic solvents and oil from seawater; the volume of the adsorbate can be as high as the total pore volume of the aerogel (6.0 mL/g⁻¹), and the absorption is complete within seconds. X-Ca alginate aerogels are suitable for the decontamination of aquatic environments from a broader range of inorganic and organic pollutants.
