Effect of Reducing Agent on Solution Synthesis of Li3V2(PO4)3 Cathode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries

Preparation of Li3V2(PO4)3 as cathode material for aqueous zinc ion batteries by a hydrothermal assisted sol-gel method and its properties

To alleviate the depletion of lithium resources and improve battery capacity and rate capacity, the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is crucial. The open channels monoclinic structure Li3V2(PO4)3 is conducive to the transfer and diffusion of guest ions, making it a promising cathode material for AZIBs. Therefore, in this study, nanoneedles and particles Li3V2(PO4)3 cathode materials for AZIBs were prepared by a hydrothermal assisted sol-gel method, and the effect of synthesized pH values was studied. XRD results show that all samples had the monoclinic structure, and the Li3V2(PO4)3 sample prepared at pH = 7 exhibits (LVP-pH7) the highest peak tips and narrowest peak widths. SEM images demonstrate that all samples have the morphology character of randomly oriented needles and irregular particles, with the LVP-pH7 sample having more needle-like particles that contribute to ion diffusion. EDS results show uniform distribution of P, V, and O elements in the LVP-pH7 sample, and no obvious aggregation phenomenon is observed. Electrochemical tests have shown that the LVP-pH7 sample exhibits excellent cycling performance (97.37% after 50 cycles at 200 mA g-1) and rate ability compared to other samples. The CV test results showed that compared with other samples, the LVP-pH7 sample had the most excellent ionic diffusion coefficient (2.44 × 10-12 cm2 s-1). Additionally, the Rct of LVP-pH7 is the lowest (319.83 Ω) according to the findings of EIS and Nyquist plot fitting, showing a decreased charge transfer resistance and raising the kinetics of the reaction.

Growth Mechanism of Micro/Nano Metal Dendrites and Cumulative Strategies for Countering Its Impacts in Metal Ion Batteries: A Review

Metal-ion batteries are capable of delivering high energy density with a longer lifespan. However, they are subject to several issues limiting their utilization. One critical impediment is the budding and extension of solid protuberances on the anodic surface, which hinders the cell functionalities. These protuberances expand continuously during the cyclic processes, extending through the separator sheath and leading to electrical shorting. The progression of a protrusion relies on a number of in situ and ex situ factors that can be evaluated theoretically through modeling or via laboratory experimentation. However, it is essential to identify the dynamics and mechanism of protrusion outgrowth. This review article explores recent advances in alleviating metal dendrites in battery systems, specifically alkali metals. In detail, we address the challenges associated with battery breakdown, including the underlying mechanism of dendrite generation and swelling. We discuss the feasible solutions to mitigate the dendrites, as well as their pros and cons, highlighting future research directions. It is of great importance to analyze dendrite suppression within a pragmatic framework with synergy in order to discover a unique solution to ensure the viability of present (Li) and future-generation batteries (Na and K) for commercial use.

Synthesis of Nickel Fumarate and Its Electrochemical Properties for Li-Ion Batteries

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have found a potential application in various domains such as gas storage/separation, drug delivery, catalysis, etc. Recently, they have found considerable attention for energy storage applications such as Li- and Na-ion batteries. However, the development of MOFs is plagued by their limited energy density that arises from high molecular weight and low volumetric density. The choice of ligand plays a crucial role in determining the performance of the MOFs. Here, we report a nickel-based one-dimensional metal-organic framework, NiC4H2O4, built from bidentate fumarate ligands for anode application in Li-ion batteries. The material was obtained by a simple chimie douce precipitation method using nickel acetate and fumaric acid. Moreover, a composite material of the MOF with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was prepared to enhance the lithium storage performance as the rGO can enhance the electronic conductivity. Electrochemical lithium storage in the framework and the effect of rGO on the performance have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge measurements, and EIS studies. The pristine nickel formate encounters serious capacity fading while the rGO composite offers good cycling stability with high reversible capacities of over 800 mAh g−1.

CoMnO2-Decorated Polyimide-Based Carbon Fiber Electrodes for Wire-Type Asymmetric Supercapacitor Applications

In this work, we report the carbon fiber-based wire-type asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). The highly conductive carbon fibers were prepared by the carbonized and graphitized process using the polyimide (PI) as a carbon fiber precursor. To assemble the ASC device, the CoMnO₂-coated and Fe₂O₃-coated carbon fibers were used as the cathode and the anode materials, respectively. Herein, the nanostructured CoMnO₂ were directly deposited onto carbon fibers by a chemical oxidation route without high temperature treatment in presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidizing agent. FE-SEM analysis confirmed that the CoMnO₂-coated carbon fiber electrode exhibited the porous hierarchical interconnected nanosheet structures, depending on the added amount of APS, and Fe₂O₃-coated carbon fiber electrode showed a uniform distribution of porous Fe₂O₃ nanorods over the surface of carbon fibers. The electrochemical properties of the CoMnO₂-coated carbon fiber with the concentration of 6 mmol APS presented the enhanced electrochemical activity, probably due to its porous morphologies and good conductivity. Further, to reduce the interfacial contact resistance as well as improve the adhesion between transition metal nanostructures and carbon fibers, the carbon fibers were pre-coated with the Ni layer as a seed layer using an electrochemical deposition method. The fabricated ASC device delivered a specific capacitance of 221 F g^-1 at 0.7 A g^-1 and good rate capability of 34.8% at 4.9 A g^-1. Moreover, the wire-type device displayed the superior energy density of 60.2 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 490 W kg^-1 and excellent capacitance retention of 95% up to 3000 charge/discharge cycles.

Effect of Chromium on Electrochemical and Mechanical Properties of Beta-Al2O3 Solid Electrolyte Synthesized Via a Citrate-Nitrate Combustion Method

The beta-Al2O3 solid electrolyte doped with Chromium was synthesized via a citrate-nitrate combustion method, which started with NaNO3, LiNO3, Cr(NO3)3·9H2O, and Al(NO3)3·9H2O as the raw materials in this paper. The thermal behavior analysis, structure, and ionic conductivity of the beta-Al2O3 solid electrolyte were studied by the thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Meanwhile, the relative density and bending strength of the samples were also measured. The results showed that with the appropriate Chromium doping, the calcining temperature of the precursor powders was only 1100 °C, the β″-Al2O3 phase content, bending strength, relative density, and ionic conductivity were all improved with a compact and uniform cross section micrograph. The optimized sample contained 94% of β″-Al2O3 phase and exhibited a relative density up to 98.13% of the theoretical density. In addition, it showed a good bending strength (215 MPa) and a satisficed ionic conductivity (0.110 S cm−1 at 350 °C).
