Diaza-1,3-butadienes as Useful Intermediate in Heterocycles Synthesis

Many heterocyclic compounds can be synthetized using diaza-1,3-butadienes (DADs) as key structural precursors. Isolated and in situ diaza-1,3-butadienes, produced from their respective precursors (typically imines and hydrazones) under a variety of conditions, can both react with a wide range of substrates in many kinds of reactions. Most of these reactions discussed here include nucleophilic additions, Michael-type reactions, cycloadditions, Diels–Alder, inverse electron demand Diels–Alder, and aza-Diels–Alder reactions. This review focuses on the reports during the last 10 years employing 1,2-diaza-, 1,3-diaza-, 2,3-diaza-, and 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes as intermediates to synthesize heterocycles such as indole, pyrazole, 1,2,3-triazole, imidazoline, pyrimidinone, pyrazoline, -lactam, and imidazolidine, among others. Fused heterocycles, such as quinazoline, isoquinoline, and dihydroquinoxaline derivatives, are also included in the review.

Synthesis and Nanoarchitectonics of Novel Squaraine Derivatives for Organic Photovoltaic Devices

Necessary advancements in the area of organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices include the upgrade of power conversion efficiencies (PCE) and stability. One answer to these demands lies in the research into new absorbers. Here, we focus on the development of new small molecule absorbers from the group of squaraines (SQs). These modular absorbers can be applied as donors in organic solar cells and have the ability to utilize a broad range of solar radiation if blended with suitable acceptors. In order to allow for the compatibility and favorable organization of donor and acceptor in the absorber layer, we intend to optimize the structure of the SQ by varying the groups attached to the squaric acid core. For that purpose, we accordingly developed a well-suited synthesis route. The novel alkyl- and benzyl-substituted aryl aminosquaraines were synthesized through an improved and eco-friendly procedure. Special emphasis was placed on optimizing the amination reaction to obtain initial precursors in the synthesis of squaraine, avoiding hitherto common catalytic processes. All SQ precursors and SQ products were completely described. The derived SQs were additionally characterized in thin-film configuration using cyclic voltammetry and UV-VIS spectroscopy and then processed to prepare self-standing bulk heterojunction (BHJ) thin films in conjunction with fullerene-based electron acceptors, which were characterized via profilometry. The comparison between SQ and BHJ solutions and thin films, using atomic force microscopy and UV-VIS spectroscopy, revealed differences in susceptibility for the organization and orientation of the constituting domains.

Organic Solar Cells Parameters Extraction and Characterization Techniques

Organic photovoltaic research is continuing in order to improve the efficiency and stability of the products. Organic devices have recently demonstrated excellent efficiency, bringing them closer to the market. Understanding the relationship between the microscopic parameters of the device and the conditions under which it is prepared and operated is essential for improving performance at the device level. This review paper emphasizes the importance of the parameter extraction stage for organic solar cell investigations by offering various device models and extraction methodologies. In order to link qualitative experimental measurements to quantitative microscopic device parameters with a minimum number of experimental setups, parameter extraction is a valuable step. The number of experimental setups directly impacts the pace and cost of development. Several experimental and material processing procedures, including the use of additives, annealing, and polymer chain engineering, are discussed in terms of their impact on the parameters of organic solar cells. Various analytical, numerical, hybrid, and optimization methods were introduced for parameter extraction based on single, multiple diodes and drift-diffusion models. Their validity for organic devices was tested by extracting the parameters of some available devices from the literature.
