Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Coatings Containing Flame Retardant Additives from Suspensions in Water-2-Propanol

Attenuation properties of poly methyl methacrylate reinforced with micro/nano ZrO2 as gamma-ray shields

This research aimed to examine the radiation shielding properties of unique polymer composites for medical and non-medical applications. For this purpose, polymer composites, based on poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a matrix, were prepared and reinforced with micro- and nanoparticles of ZrO2 fillers at a loading of 15%, 30%, and 45% by weight. Using the high purity germanium (HPGe) detector, the suggested polymer composites' shielding characteristics were assessed for various radioactive sources. The experimental values of the mass attenuation coefficients (MAC) of the produced composites agreed closely with those obtained theoretically from the XCOM database. Different shielding parameters were estimated at a broad range of photon energies, including the linear attenuation coefficient (μ), tenth value layer (TVL), half value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), effective electron density (Neff), effective atomic number (Zeff), and equivalent atomic number (Zeq), as well as exposure buildup factor (EBF) and energy absorption buildup factor (EABF) to provide more shielding information about the penetration of γ-rays into the chosen composites. The results showed that increasing the content of micro and nano ZrO2 particles in the PMMA matrix increases μ values and decreases HVL, TVL, and MFP values. P-45nZ sample with 45 wt% of ZrO2 nanoparticles had the highest μ values, which varied between 2.6546 and 0.0991 cm-1 as γ-ray photon energy increased from 0.0595 to 1.408 MeV, respectively. Furthermore, the highest relative increase rate in μ values between nano and micro composites was 17.84%, achieved for the P-45nZ sample at 59.53 keV. These findings demonstrated that ZrO2 nanoparticles shield radiation more effectively than micro ZrO2 even at the same photon energy and filler wt%. Thus, the proposed nano ZrO2/PMMA composites can be used as effective shielding materials to lessen the transmitted radiation dose in radiation facilities.

Application of Self-Assembled Polyarylether Substrate in Flexible Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

The structure used in this study is as follows: substrate/PMMA/ZnS/Ag/MoO3/NPB/Alq3/LiF/Al. Here, PMMA serves as the surface flattening layer, ZnS/Ag/MoO3 as the anode, NPB as the hole injection layer, Alq3 as the emitting layer, LiF as the electron injection layer, and aluminum as the cathode. The properties of the devices with different substrates were investigated using P4 and glass, developed in the laboratory, as well as commercially available PET. After film formation, P4 creates holes on the surface. The light field distribution of the device was calculated at wavelengths of 480 nm, 550 nm, and 620 nm using optical simulation. It was found that this microstructure contributes to light extraction. The maximum brightness, external quantum efficiency, and current efficiency of the device at a P4 thickness of 2.6 μm were 72,500 cd/m², 1.69%, and 5.68 cd/A, respectively. However, the maximum brightness of the same structure with PET (130 μm) was 9500 cd/m². The microstructure of the P4 substrate was found to contribute to the excellent device performance through analysis of the AFM surface morphology, film resistance, and optical simulation results. The holes formed by the P4 substrate were created solely by spin-coating the material and then placing it on a heating plate to dry, without any special processing. To confirm the reproducibility of the naturally formed holes, devices were fabricated again with three different emitting layer thicknesses. The maximum brightness, external quantum efficiency, and current efficiency of the device at an Alq3 thickness of 55 nm were 93,400 cd/m², 1.7%, and 5.6 cd/A, respectively.

Application of Spectroscopic Analysis for Plasma Polymerization Deposition onto the Inner Surfaces of Silicone Tubes

In the current study, plasma-polymerized methyl methacrylate (PP-MMA) generation on the inner surface of a silicone tube was performed in a capacitively coupled discharge reactor. The possibility of generating plasma inside the tube was analyzed and calculated by using optical emission spectroscopy (OES). A hollow cathode model was first proposed to determine whether plasma discharge would be generated inside the tube in the low-pressure regime. Since the ignition of plasma inside the tube is necessary for the initiation of polymerization processes, the sheath thickness was calculated analytically. To achieve the goal, the electron temperature and density of plasma should be determined beforehand. In this study, the electron temperature and plasma density were measured and calculated according to OES spectra using both the modified Boltzmann plot and the line-ratio method. The results reveal that the occurrence of plasma inside the tube can be achieved if the tube’s inner diameter is greater than two times the thickness of the sheath. The effect of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer concentration on sheath thickness, and, hence, plasma generation and deposition, was investigated in the presence of argon plasma and MMA monomer. According to the study, one could control the ignition of plasma discharges inside the tube followed by plasma polymerization deposition. The OES method was also applied to identify the presence of the excited species related to the fragmented monomer. The deposition of PP-MMA films on the inner surface of the tube was confirmed via attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy.

Poly(ethyl methacrylate) Composite Coatings Containing Halogen-Free Inorganic Additives with Flame-Retardant Properties

This investigation is motivated by the need for the development of polymer coatings containing inorganic flame-retardant materials (FRMs) and the replacement of toxic halogenated FRMs. A green strategy is reported for the fabrication of poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA)-FRM composite coatings using a dip-coating method. The use of water-isopropanol co-solvent allows the replacement of regular toxic solvents for PEMA. The abilities to form concentrated solutions of high-molecular-mass PEMA and to disperse FRM particles in such solutions are the main factors in the fabrication of coatings using a dip-coating technique. Huntite, halloysite, and hydrotalcite are used as advanced FRMs for the fabrication of PEMA-FRM coatings. FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA data are used for the analysis of the microstructure and composition of PEMA-FRM coatings. PEMA and PEMA-FRM coatings provide corrosion protection of stainless steel. The ability to form laminates with different layers using a dip-coating method facilitates the fabrication of composite coatings with enhanced properties.
