Abstract
Pectin has excellent film-forming properties, but its functional properties need to be enhanced. Therefore, we constructed naturally branched phytoglycogen (PG) nanoparticles to solubilize curcumin (CCM) and further enhance the properties of apple pectin-based active films. The size of the PG spherical particles ranged from 30 to 100 nm with some aggregates. The branch density of the PG was 6.02 %. These PG nanoparticles increased the solubility of CCM nearly 1742-fold and a nanosized phytoglycogen-curcumin (PG-CCM) host was formed via hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction. This host promoted the formation of pectin-based films with a dense structure and increased their tensile strength to 23.51 MPa. The coefficient to water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability and carbon dioxide permeability were all decreased indicating their barrier performance were improved. Among them, the oxygen permeability coefficient decreased most, from 1.14 × 10-7 g·m-1·s-1 to 0.8 × 10-7 g·m-1·s-1. Also, the transmittance of the active film at 280 nm and 660 nm decreased to 0.65 % and 72.10 %. Antioxidant and antibacterial properties were significantly enhanced (P < 0.05). And the results showed this film was an excellent oil packaging material. The active film incorporating PG-CCM host can replace heat-sealed plastic bags/pouch made from polyethylene and polypropylene synthetic plastics, and solve the problem that plastic packaging is difficult to degrade and cannot be squeezed clean. This provides a new conceptual framework for developing pectin-based active films by incorporating of PG and CCM.

Abstract
Background Curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, was selected for the developing consumer friendly film forming spray that offers precise delivery of curcumin and and improves patient adherence. Methods An optimized film-forming solution was prepared by dissolving curcumin (1%), Eudragit RLPO (5%), propylene glycol (1%), and camphor (0.5%) in ethanol: acetone (20:80) as the solvent. The solution was filled in a spray container which contained 70% solutions and 30% petroleum gas. In-vitro characterization was performed. Results Potential anti-inflammatory phytoconstituents were extracted from the PubChem database and prepared as ligands, along with receptor molecules (nsp10-nsp16), for molecular docking using Autodock Vina. The docking study showed the lowest binding energy of -8.2 kcal/mol indicates better binding affinities. The optimized formulation consisted of ethanol:acetone (20:80) as the solvent, Eudragit RLPO (5%) as the polymer, propylene glycol (1%) as the plasticizer, and camphor oil (0.5%) as the penetration enhancer. The optimized formulation exhibited pH of 5.8 ± 0.01, low viscosity, low film formation time (19.54 ± 0.78 sec), high drug content (8.243 ± 0.43 mg/mL), and extended ex vivo drug permeation (85.08 ± 0.09%) for nine hours. Consequently, the formulation was incorporated into a container using 30% liquefied petroleum gas, delivering 0.293 ± 0.08 mL per actuation, containing 1.53 ± 0.07 mg of the drug. The film-forming spray exhibited higher cumulative drug permeation (83.94 ± 0.34%) than the marketed cream formulation and pure drug solution after 9 h, with an enhancement ratio of 14. Notably, the film-forming spray exhibited no skin irritation and remained stable for over three months. Conclusions The developed curcumin film-forming system is promising as a carrier for wound management because of its convenient administration and transport attributes. Further in vivo studies are required to validate its efficacy in wound management.

Abstract
The present work deals with the eco-friendly preparation of highly degradable food packaging films consisting of O-CMC (O-Carboxymethyl Chitosan) and pectin, incorporated with neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves powder and extract. This study aimed to investigate the tensile properties, antimicrobial activity, biodegradability, and thermal behavior of the composite films. The results of tensile strength and elongation at break, showed that the incorporation of neem leaves powder improved the tensile properties (7.11 MPa) of the composite films compared to the neat O-CMC and pectin films (3.02 MPa). The antimicrobial activity of the films was evaluated against a panel of microorganisms including both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. The composite films exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity with a zone of inhibition (12-17.6 mm) against the tested microorganisms. The opacity of the composite films ranges from 1.14 to 4.40 mm-1 and the addition of fiber causes a decrease in opacity value. Biodegradability studies were conducted by Soil burial method and the films demonstrated complete biodegradability within 75 days. The results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of composite films show that they are thermally stable and might be used in food packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan is a natural biopolymer that can be used in biomedical applications, tissue engineering, and wound dressing because of its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity. The blending of chitosan films with natural biomaterials such as cellulose, honey, and curcumin was studied at different concentrations in order to improve their physical properties. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, mechanical tensile properties, X-ray diffraction (XRD), antibacterial effects, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were studied for all blended films. The XRD, FTIR, and mechanical results showed that films blended with curcumin were more rigid and compatible and had higher antibacterial effects than other blended films. In addition, XRD and SEM showed that blending chitosan films with curcumin decreases the crystallinity of the chitosan matrix compared to cellulose and honey blending films due to increased intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which reduces the close packing of the CS matrix.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, a new crosslinking agent (CA) containing whey protein, papin, glycerin, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), was prepared. The effects of CA content (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40%, v/v) on food packaging properties, crystallinity, microstructure, and antioxidant properties of pectin-CA and chitosan-CA composite films were analyzed. The results of this research offer a theoretical basis for engineering improved films for food packing. RESULTS Pectin-CA (30%) and chitosan-CA (40%) composite films showed the best light transmission, water retention, breathability, plasticity, and antioxidant activity. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that these composite films exhibited a uniform and homogeneous structure without obvious pores. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that the amino acids and EGCG in CA were bonded to the film substrate (pectin/chitosan) via electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and covalent bonding, which led to an improvement in the film's properties. CONCLUSION The CA has broad application prospects in food packaging as a cross-linking agent and antioxidant. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Recently, the development of materials based on natural polymers have been observed. This is the result of increasing environmental degradation, as well as increased awareness and consumer expectations. Many industries, especially the packaging industry, face challenges resulting from legal regulations. Chitin is the most common biopolymer right after cellulose and is used to produce chitosan. Due to the properties of chitosan, such as non-toxicity, biocompatibility, as well as antimicrobial properties, chitosan-based materials are used in many industries. Many studies have been conducted to determine the suitability of chitosan materials as food packaging, and their advantages and limitations have been identified. Thanks to the possibility of modifying the chitosan matrix by using natural additives, it is possible to strengthen the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of chitosan films, which means that, in the near future, chitosan-based materials will be a more environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic packaging used so far. The article presents literature data on the most commonly used natural additives, such as essential oils, plant extracts, or polysaccharides, and their effects on antimicrobial, antioxidant, mechanical, barrier, and optical properties. The application of chitosan as a natural biopolymer in food packaging extends the shelf-life of various food products while simultaneously reducing the use of synthetic plastics, which in turn will have a positive impact on the natural environment. However, further research on chitosan and its combinations with various materials is still needed to extent the application of chitosan in food packaging and bring its application to industrial levels.

Abstract
p-Coumaric acid and caffeic acid were grafted onto chitosan through a non-radical synthesis method to improve the properties of chitosan and expand its application in food industry. Structural characterization demonstrated that the -COOH of the two phenolic acids were bonded to the -NH2 of the chitosan and formed an acylamino. The grafting ratios of p-coumaric acid-modified chitosan (Cm-CTS) and caffeic acid-modified chitosan (Cf-CTS) reached 10.30 % and 9.78 %, respectively. After modification, the water solubility of the chitosan greatly improved from 9.33 % (native chitosan, Nt-CTS) to 77.33 % (Cm-CTS) and 100 % (Cf-CTS). Besides, the involvement of phenolic acid and caffeic acid endowed the chitosan with strengthened antioxidation and antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Nt-CTS and the modified chitosans were coated on the pork surface. The results indicated that Nt-CTS effectively inhibited pork spoilage and the modified chitosans could further prolong the shelf life of pork.

Abstract
Composite films were prepared by combining different concentrations of curcumin with chitin and glucan complexes (CGCs) extracted from Agaricus bisporus via a solution casting method. The developed curcumin doped CGC (CGC/Cu) films were characterized in terms of surface, optical, structural, barrier, mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. The biodegradability of CGC/Cu films was determined in soil for 14 days. The incorporation of curcumin significantly affected the surface morphology and improved light barrier properties, radical scavenging activity, and total phenolic content of the films. The CGC/Cu films containing different concentrations of curcumin showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, while antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was not observed with the developed films. Afterward, the microbial properties of the fresh chicken breast were examined during refrigerated storage for 10 days. The shelf-life of chicken samples wrapped in the developed film was extended at least 40 % compared to the control sample. In conclusion, curcumin incorporated CGC based films can serve as a promising biodegradable active packaging material to improve the shelf-life of meat products.

Abstract
Raspberry anthocyanin (RA) from Rubus idaeus L. (Rosaceae) and curcumin (Cur) from Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae) can effectively improve the physicochemical properties of composite films, and as bioactive pigment components, they can impart pH-responsive properties to the film. In this study, RA and Cur were added to chitosan/starch/gelatin composite film (CSG) to prepare CSG-RA, CSG-Cur, CSG-RA/Cur82 and CSG-RA/Cur73 color films by solution casting method. The color films could change color under different pH conditions and had higher antioxidant activities using ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) assay. The results from fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that RA and Cur were well dispersed in the CSG matrix and improved the structure of the composite films. The hydrophobic Cur increased the tensile strength from 6 Mpa (CSG) to 14 Mpa (CSG-Cur), but reduced the elongation at break from 55 % (CSG) to 40 % (CSG-Cur). These color films had a good fresh-keeping effect and freshness monitoring, in particular, CSG-RA/Cur73, had the better opacity, water solubility, thickness, moisture content and water vapor permeability than the other films. Briefly, binary pigment films had the potential to become a pH-sensitive indicator/packing film.

Abstract
Active and intelligent food packaging is an innovative technology to prevent food contamination and ensure food quality and safety. Active packaging protects the food from microbial contamination, while smart or intelligent packaging enables monitoring the freshness of the food or quality change in real-time. Curcumin, one of the most well-known natural colorants, has received a lot of attention for its excellent functional properties and ability to change color with changes in pH. Curcumin, the golden component of turmeric, a spice widely used in food since ancient times, is a cost-effective and abundant biomaterial with various biological properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory. Recently, active packaging or intelligent packaging systems have been actively developed using the functional properties of curcumin. In this review, we briefly reviewed curcumin's basic biological functions and discussed comprehensive and recent progress in using curcumin in various polymer-based active and smart food packaging applications.

Abstract
In this work, a novel approach is demonstrated for 3D-printing of bacterial cellulose (BC) reinforced UV-curable ion gels using two-component solvents based on 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride or choline chloride combined with acrylic acid. Preservation of cellulose's crystalline and nanofibrous structure is demonstrated using wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Rheological measurements reveal that cholinium-based systems, in comparison with imidazolium-based ones, are characterised with lower viscosity at low shear rates and improved stability against phase separation at high shear rates. Grafting of poly(acrylic acid) onto the surfaces of cellulose nanofibers during UV-induced polymerization of acrylic acid results in higher elongation at break for choline chloride-based compositions: 175% in comparison with 94% for imidazolium-based systems as well as enhanced mechanical properties in compression mode. As a result, cholinium-based BC ion gels containing acrylic acid can be considered as more suitable for 3D-printing of objects with improved mechanical properties due to increased dispersion stability and filler/matrix interaction.
