Abstract
The therapeutic efficacy of Fenton or Fenton-like nanocatalysts is usually restricted by the inappropriate pH value and limited concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at the tumor site. Herein, calcium carbonate (CaCO3)-mineralized cobalt silicate hydroxide hollow nanocatalysts (CSO@CaCO3, CC) were synthesized and loaded with curcumin (CCC). This hybrid system can simultaneously realize nanocatalytic therapy, chemotherapy and calcium overload. With the stabilization of liposomes, CCC is able to reach the tumor site smoothly. The CaCO3 shell first degrades in an acidic tumor environment, releasing Cur and Ca2+, and the pH value of the tumor is increased simultaneously. Then the exposed CSO catalyzes the Fenton-like reaction to convert H2O2 into ˙OH and enhances the cytotoxicity of curcumin (Cur) by catalytically oxidizing it to a ˙Cur radical. Curcumin not only induces the chemotherapy effect but also serves as a nucleophilic ligand and an electron donor in the catalytic system, enhancing the Fenton-like activity of CCC by electron transfer. In addition, calcium overload also amplifies the efficacy of ROS-based therapy. In vitro and in vivo results show that CCC exhibited an excellent synergistic tumor inhibition effect without any clear side effect. This work proposes a novel concept of nanocatalytic therapy/chemotherapy synergistic mechanism by the ligand-induced enhancement of Fenton-like catalytic activity, and inspires the construction of combined therapeutic nanoplatforms and multifunctional nanocarriers for drug and ion delivery in the future.

Abstract
Curcumin, an extensively studied phytochemical compound, has gained attention for its potential therapeutic applications across a spectrum of diseases. Its notable attributes include its relatively high tolerability within the human body and its perceived absence of adverse side effects. This review article presents a comprehensive overview of the antioxidant effects exhibited by complexes formed by curcumin and curcumin derived ligands with metals like Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Ga and In, which leads to toxic effects beyond a certain limit, based on both experimental and theoretical findings. Additionally, the discussion delves into metal-curcumin complexes characterized by stoichiometries of 1:1 and 1:2, exploring their geometric arrangements and corresponding antioxidant activity, as highlighted in recent studies. These complexes hold the promise of improving curcumin's solubility, stability, and bioavailability, potentially augmenting its overall therapeutic potential and expanding its scope for medical applications.

Abstract
Phenolics of browntop millet extracted in solvents with varying polarities [water, methanol, acetone (80%), ethanol (70%)] were comparatively assessed for their phenolic profiles, antioxidant activities, DNA damage protection and enzyme inhibitory properties. Results indicated that acetone (80%) and ethanol (70%) were most effective in extracting millet phenolics than other solvents. Gallic, caffeic and ferulic acids were the major phenolic acids, myricetin and kaempferol were the most abundant flavonoids detected in all the extracts of browntop millet. Phenolics extracted in 80% acetone and 70% ethanol offered noticeable contributions toward several antioxidant mechanisms and prevented the oxidative DNA damage than water and methanol extracts. All the millet extracts exhibited potent inhibition towards α-glucosidase than α-amylase activities. These results suggest that the solvents and their polarities impacted the extraction and bioactivities of millet phenolics and provided useful information for the effective utilization of browntop millet as a functional food ingredient to manage hyperglycemia.

Abstract
The oxidation of L-proline (Pro) by HO● radical in water and the influence of transition metal ions on this process has been revisited by using the density functional theory (DFT) method at the M05-2X/6-311 + + G(3df,3pd)//M05-2X/6-311 + + G(d,p) level of theory at the temperature of 298.15 K. The main reactive sites of the HO●-initiated oxidation of Pro via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions are at the β- and γ-carbon, with the branching ratios being 44.6% and 39.5%, respectively. The overall rate constant at 298.15 K is 6.04 × 108 M-1 s-1. In addition, Pro tends to form stable complexes with both Fe and Cu ions via the -COO functional group of dipole-salt form. The most stable Cu(II)-Pro complexes have high oxidant risks in enhancing the HO● formation in the presence of reducing agents. Besides this, the high oxidation state metal complexes, i.e. Fe(III)-Pro and Cu(II)-Pro, may be oxidized by HO● radical via HAT reactions but with a lower rate constant than that of free-Pro. By contrast, the low oxidation state metal complexes (i.e. Fe(II)-Pro and Cu(I)-Pro) have higher oxidation risks than the free ligands, and thus, the complexation enhances the oxidation of Pro amino acid.

Abstract
Mixed pyrophosphate salts with the general formula Ca2(1-x)Fe4x(P2O7)(1+2x) potentially possess less iron-phenolic reactivity compared to ferric pyrophosphate (FePP), due to decreased soluble Fe in the food-relevant pH range 3-7. We investigated reactivity (i.e., complexation, oxidation, and surface interaction) of FePP and mixed salts (with x = 0.14, 0.15, 0.18, and 0.35) in presence of structurally diverse phenolics. At pH 5-7, increased soluble iron from all salts was observed in presence of water-soluble phenolics. XPS confirmed that water-soluble phenolics solubilize iron after coordination at the salt surface, resulting in increased discoloration. However, color changes for mixed salts with x ≤ 0.18 remained acceptable for slightly water-soluble and insoluble phenolics. Furthermore, phenolic oxidation in presence of mixed salts was significantly reduced compared to FePP at pH 6. In conclusion, these mixed Ca-Fe(III) pyrophosphate salts with x ≤ 0.18 can potentially be used in designing iron-fortified foods containing slightly water-soluble and/or insoluble phenolics.

Abstract
In the past decades, many studies have widely examined the effects of dietary polyphenols on human health. Polyphenols are well known for their antioxidant properties and for their chelating abilities, by which they can be potentially employed in cases of pathological conditions, such as iron overload. In this review, we have highlighted the chelating abilities of polyphenols, which are due to their structural specific sites, and the differences for each class of polyphenols. We have also explored how the dietary polyphenols and their iron-binding abilities can be important in inflammatory/immunomodulatory responses, with a special focus on the involvement of macrophages and dendritic cells, and how they might contribute to reshape the gut microbiota into a healthy profile. This review also provides evidence that the axes “polyphenol–iron metabolism–inflammatory responses” and “polyphenol–iron availability–gut microbiota” have not been very well explored so far, and the need for further investigation to exploit such a potential to prevent or counteract pathological conditions.

Abstract
Plant adaptive strategies have been shaped during evolutionary development in the constant interaction with a plethora of environmental factors, including the presence of metals/metalloids in the environment. Among adaptive reactions against either the excess of trace elements or toxic doses of non-essential elements, their complexation with molecular endogenous ligands, including phenolics, has received increasing attention. Currently, the complexation of phenolics with metal(loid)s is a topic of intensive studies in different scientific fields. In spite of the numerous studies on their chelating capacity, the systemic analysis of phenolics as plant ligands has not been performed yet. Such a systematizing can be performed based on the modern approach of metallomics as an integral biometal science, which in turn has been differentiated into subgroups according to the nature of the bioligands. In this regard, the present review summarizes phenolics–metal(loid)s’ interactions using the metallomic approach. Experimental results on the chelating activity of representative compounds from different phenolic subgroups in vitro and in vivo are systematized. General properties of phenolic ligands and specific properties of anthocyanins are revealed. The novel concept of metallophenolomics is proposed, as a ligand-oriented subgroup of metallomics, which is an integrated approach to study phenolics–metal(loid)s’ complexations. The research subjects of metallophenolomics are outlined according to the methodology of metallomic studies, including mission-oriented biometal sciences (environmental sciences, food sciences and nutrition, medicine, cosmetology, coloration technologies, chemical sciences, material sciences, solar cell sciences). Metallophenolomics opens new prospects to unite multidisciplinary investigations of phenolic–metal(loid) interactions.

Abstract
Hydroxyl radical (HO·) formation initiated by the Fenton-type reactions of Fe and Cu complexes of l-leucine (Leu) amino acid as well as its oxidation reaction by HO· was computationally investigated by using the density functional theory method at the M05-2X/6-311++G(3df,2pd)//M05-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory in the aqueous phase. The results showed that dipole-salt is the main form of Leu in the physiological condition. Leu exhibits high chelating potential towards both Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Cu(II)/Cu(I) ions with the most favourable coordinating positions at two oxygen atoms of the -COO functional group. Furthermore, the Leu-ions complexes show a high risk of HO· formation via Fenton-like reactions, especially when ascorbate anion exists in the environment as a reducing agent. Finally, the oxidation reaction of l-leucine by HO· demonstrated a relatively high overall apparent reaction rate, k overall, being 1.18 × 109 M-1 s-1, in which formal hydrogen transfer reactions of the dipole-salt form occur as the primary mechanism. Consequently, the Leu oxidation by HO· radical can be promoted by the Fenton reaction enhancement of its transition metal complexes.

Abstract
Coordination states of metal‐organic materials are known to dictate their physicochemical properties and applications in various fields. However, understanding and controlling coordination sites in metal‐organic systems is challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of site‐selective coordinated metal‐phenolic networks (MPNs) using flavonoids as coordination modulators. The site‐selective coordination was systematically investigated experimentally and computationally using ligands with one, two, and multiple different coordination sites. Tuning the multimodal Fe coordination with catechol, carbonyl, and hydroxyl groups within the MPNs enabled the facile engineering of diverse physicochemical properties including size, selective permeability (20–2000 kDa), and pH‐dependent degradability. This study expands our understanding of metal‐phenolic chemistry and provides new routes for the rational design of structurally tailorable coordination‐based materials.

Abstract
Quercetin is a plant-derived polyphenol flavonoid that has been proven to be effective for many diseases. However, the mechanism and in vivo metabolism of quercetin remains to be clarified. It achieves a wide range of biological effects through various metabolites, gut microbiota and its metabolites, systemic mediators produced by inflammation and oxidation, as well as by multiple mechanisms. The all-round disease treatment of quercetin is achieved through the organic combination of multiple channels. Therefore, this article clarifies the metabolic process of quercetin in the body, and explores the new pattern of action of quercetin in the treatment of diseases.

Abstract
The microaerophile Streptococcus mutans, the main microaerophile responsible for the development of dental plaque, has a single cambialistic superoxide dismutase (SmSOD) for its protection against reactive oxygen species. In order to discover novel inhibitors of SmSOD, possibly interfering with the biofilm formation by this pathogen, a virtual screening study was realised using the available 3D-structure of SmSOD. Among the selected molecules, compound ALS-31 was capable of inhibiting SmSOD with an IC50 value of 159 µM. Its inhibition power was affected by the Fe/Mn ratio in the active site of SmSOD. Furthermore, ALS-31 also inhibited the activity of other SODs. Gel-filtration of SmSOD in the presence of ALS-31 showed that the compound provoked the dissociation of the SmSOD homodimer in two monomers, thus compromising the catalytic activity of the enzyme. A docking model, showing the binding mode of ALS-31 at the dimer interface of SmSOD, is presented. Cell viability of the fibroblast cell line BJ5-ta was not affected up to 100 µM ALS-31. A preliminary lead optimization program allowed the identification of one derivative, ALS-31-9, endowed with a 2.5-fold improved inhibition power. Interestingly, below this concentration, planktonic growth and biofilm formation of S. mutans cultures were inhibited by ALS-31, and even more by its derivative, thus opening the perspective of future drug design studies to fight against dental caries.

Abstract
Caffeic acid (CFA) is one of the various natural antioxidants and chemoprotective agents occurring in the human diet. In addition, its metal complexes play fundamental roles in biological systems. Nevertheless, research on the properties of CFA with lanthanide metals is very scarce, and little to no chemical or biological information is known about these particular systems. Most of their properties, including their biological activity and environmental impact, strictly depend on their structure, stability, and solution behaviour. In this work, a multi-analytical-technique approach was used to study these relationships for the Eu(III)/CFA complex. The synthesized metal complex was studied by FT-IR, FT-Raman, elemental, and thermal (TGA) analysis. In order to examine the chemical speciation of the Eu(III)/CFA system in an aqueous solution, several independent potentiometric and spectrophotometric UV-Vis titrations were performed at different M:L (metal:ligand) and pH ratios. The general molecular formula of the synthesized metal complex in the solid state was [Eu(CFA)3(H2O)3]∙2H2O (M:L ratio 1:3), while in aqueous solution the 1:1 species were observed at the optimum pH of 6 ≤ pH ≤ 10, ([Eu(CFA)] and [Eu(CFA)(OH)]−). These results were confirmed by 1H-NMR experiments and electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). To evaluate the interaction of Eu(III)/CFA and CFA alone with cell membranes, electrophoretic mobility assays were used. Various antioxidant tests have shown that Eu(III)/CFA exhibits lower antioxidant activity than the free CFA ligand. In addition, the antimicrobial properties of Eu(III)/CFA and CFA against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans were investigated by evaluation of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Eu(III)/CFA shows higher antibacterial activity against bacteria compared to CFA, which can be explained by the highly probable increased lipophilicity of the Eu(III) complex.

Abstract
In the presence of Fe(iii) and several other cations, catechol motifs undergo rapid 16O/18O exchange with H218O under mild conditions. This opens up synthetic possibilities and may have implications for studies using H218O as a mechanistic probe.

Abstract
In this work, the solubility of vanillic, gallic, syringic, p-coumaric, ferulic and caffeic acids was determined at 37 °C under different conditions, namely pure water and two different ionic media, NaCl(aq) and NaClO4(aq), at different ionic strengths (i.e., 0.16, 0.50, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 M). The solubility in water of all the acids was found to be higher than that in both of the ionic media. Moreover, the solubility of hydroxycinnamic acids was lower than that of hydroxybenzoic acids. The activity coefficients of neutral species were calculated from these data; this knowledge is necessary when modeling the dependence of equilibrium constants on the ionic strength. Results obtained in this work can be useful for further studies regarding complex formation equilibria between these ligands and bioavailable metal cations.

Abstract
Detection of methanol (MeOH) in an ethanol (EtOH)/isopropanol (iPrOH) medium containing water is crucial to recognize MeOH poisoning in alcoholic beverages and hand sanitizers. Although chemical sensing methods are very sensitive and easy to perform, the chemical similarities between the alcohols make MeOH detection very challenging particularly in the presence of water. Herein, the fluorometric detection of a trace amount of MeOH in EtOH/iPrOH in the presence of water using alcohol coordinated Al(iii)-complexes of an aldehydic phenol ligand containing a dangling pyrazole unit is described. The presence of MeOH in the EtOH/iPrOH causes a change of the complex geometry from tetrahedral (Td) to octahedral (Oh) due to the replacement of the coordinated EtOH/iPrOH by MeOH molecules. The Td-complex exhibited fluorescence but the Oh-species did not, because of the intramolecular photo-induced electron transfer (PET). By interacting the Oh species with water, its one MeOH coordination is replaced by a water molecule followed by the proton transfer from the water to pyrazole-N which generates strong fluorescence by inhibiting the PET. In contrast, the water interaction dissociates the Td-complex to exhibit fluorescence quenching. The water induced reversal of the fluorescence response from the decrease to increase between the absence and presence of MeOH is utilized to detect MeOH in an EtOH/iPrOH medium containing water with a sensitivity of ∼0.03–0.06% (v/v). The presence of water effected the MeOH detection and allows the estimation of the MeOH contamination in alcoholic beverages and hand sanitizers containing large amounts of water. Detection of MeOH in EtOH/iPrOH and commercial samples based on water induced reversal of fluorescence response from the decrease to increase between the absence and presence of MeOH.![]()

Abstract
In the frame of a systematic study on the sequestering ability of natural antioxidants towards metal cations, the complexation of coumarin-3-carboxilic acid (HCCA) with neodymium(III) and dioxouranium(VI) (uranyl, UO22+), and overall stability constants of the resulting complexes, were evaluated from the pH-potentiometric titration data at 37 °C and in an aqueous solution (i.e., 0.16 mol/L NaClO4). The graphic representation of the complex’s concentration curves is given by the distribution diagrams, which provide a depiction of all the species present in the solution in the selected pH ranges. The protonation constant of HCCA was also determined to evaluate the competition of the ligand for the metal cations and H+. The ligand-to-metal concentration ratio was varied between 1 and 10, and the hydrogen ion concentration was decreased stepwise until the incipient precipitation of a basic salt of the metal, which occurred at different values depending on the specific metal cation and the ligand to metal ratio. Speciation profiles obtained by potentiometric titrations and supported by UV-Vis data show that a complexation occurs at a ligand-to-Nd(III) and to –UO22+ ratio of 1:1 and 2:1, with different degrees of deprotonation: Nd(OH)(CCA)+, UO2(OH)(CCA), UO2(OH)2(CCA)−, and Nd(OH)(CCA)2, UO2(CCA)2 and (UO2)2(OH)2(CCA)2.
