Occurrence of Disinfection By-Products in Swimming Pools in the Area of Thessaloniki, Northern Greece. Assessment of Multi-Pathway Exposure and Risk

Chloramine Disinfection of Levofloxacin and Sulfaphenazole: Unraveling Novel Disinfection Byproducts and Elucidating Formation Mechanisms for an Enhanced Understanding of Water Treatment

The unrestricted utilization of antibiotics poses a critical challenge to global public health and safety. Levofloxacin (LEV) and sulfaphenazole (SPN), widely employed broad-spectrum antimicrobials, are frequently detected at the terminal stage of water treatment, raising concerns regarding their potential conversion into detrimental disinfection byproducts (DBPs). However, current knowledge is deficient in identifying the potential DBPs and elucidating the precise transformation pathways and influencing factors during the chloramine disinfection process of these two antibiotics. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of reaction pathways, encompassing piperazine ring opening/oxidation, Cl-substitution, OH-substitution, desulfurization, and S-N bond cleavage, during chloramine disinfection. Twelve new DBPs were identified in this study, exhibiting stability and persistence even after 24 h of disinfection. Additionally, an examination of DBP generation under varying disinfectant concentrations and pH values revealed peak levels at a molar ratio of 25 for LEV and SPN to chloramine, with LEV contributing 11.5% and SPN 23.8% to the relative abundance of DBPs. Remarkably, this research underscores a substantial increase in DBP formation within the molar ratio range of 1:1 to 1:10 compared to 1:10 to 1:25. Furthermore, a pronounced elevation in DBP generation was observed in the pH range of 7 to 8. These findings present critical insights into the impact of the disinfection process on these antibiotics, emphasizing the innovation and significance of this research in assessing associated health risks.

Advances and research needs for disinfection byproducts control strategies in swimming pools

The control of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in swimming pools is of great significance due to the non-negligible toxicity and widespread existence of DBPs. However, the management of DBPs remains challenging as the removal and regulation of DBPs is a multifactorial phenomenon in pools. This study summarized recent studies on the removal and regulation of DBPs, and further proposed some research needs. Specifically, the removal of DBPs was divided into the direct removal of the generated DBPs and the indirect removal by inhibiting DBP formation. Inhibiting DBP formation seems to be the more effective and economically practical strategy, which can be achieved mainly by reducing precursors, improving disinfection technology, and optimizing water quality parameters. Alternative disinfection technologies to chlorine disinfection have attracted increasing attention, while their applicability in pools requires further investigation. The regulation of DBPs was discussed in terms of improving the standards on DBPs and their preccursors. The development of online monitoring technology for DBPs is essential for implementing the standard. Overall, this study makes a significant contribution to the control of DBPs in pool water by updating the latest research advances and providing detailed perspectives.

Trihalomethane Cancer Risk Assessment for Private and Shared Residences: Addressing the Differences in Inhalation Exposure

The multi-pathway cancer risk (CR) assessment of trihalomethanes (THM) involves considering exposure via ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation. Inhalation occurs during showering due to the volatilization of THMs from chlorinated water to the air. When assessing inhalation risks, exposure models commonly assume that the initial THM concentration in the shower room is zero. However, this assumption is only valid in private shower rooms where single or infrequent showering events take place. It fails to account for continuous or successive showering events in shared showering facilities. To address this issue, we incorporated the accumulation of THM in the shower room air. We studied a community (population ≈ 20,000) comprising two types of residences with the same water supply: population A with private shower rooms, and population B with communal shower stalls. The total THM concentration in the water was 30.22 ± 14.45 µg L^-1. For population A, the total CR was 58.5 × 10^-6, including an inhalation risk of 1.11 × 10^-6. However, for population B, the accumulation of THM in the shower stall air resulted in increased inhalation risk. By the tenth showering event, the inhalation risk was 2.2 × 10^-6, and the equivalent total CR was 59.64 × 10^-6. We found that the CR significantly increased with increasing shower duration. Nevertheless, introducing a ventilation rate of 5 L s^-1 in the shower stall reduced the inhalation CR from 1.2 × 10^-6 to 7.9 × 10^-7.

Swimming with PFAS in public and private pools

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of anthropogenic chemicals used to provide water and stain resistance in many consumer products. Their widespread use, nearly ubiquitous presence across multiple environments, and growing list of adverse health effects has raised concerns among communities. PFAS have been frequently detected and quantified globally in wastewater, groundwater, surface and drinking water; however, the presence of PFAS in swimming pool water - a unique matrix in which constituents may concentrate through evaporation and which also may present a high risk of direct human exposure - has not been reported. Here, ultra-high performance liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was used to monitor 92 PFAS in 54 water samples collected from city, apartment, hotel, and personal swimming pools in six Florida cities. In total, 14 PFAS were detected with six perfluoroalkyl acids - perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) - detected in every sample. PFHxA accounted for 49% of all PFAS quantified in this study. PFAS profiles were compared between sites as a function of pool type, rate of use, and geographic location. Total ΣPFAS concentrations were similar across pool types, with both the highest (633 ng/L) and lowest (1.9 ng/L) measurements found in public city pools. Between sites, higher PFAS levels were observed in city pools in Miami, Melbourne and Tampa compared to Naples, Orlando and Gainesville. Our findings highlight the potential exposure of PFAS in an underexplored and yet important exposure pathway in communities.
