Novel Magnetic Silica-Ionic Liquid Nanocomposites for Wastewater Treatment

Adsorption potential of ionic liquid-modified ZnO nanoparticles for highly efficient removal of azo dye: detailed isotherms and kinetics

In this study, bare and ionic liquid-modified ZnO nanoparticles have been fabricated using microwave irradiation method. The fabricated nanoparticles were characterized by different techniques, viz. XRD, FT-IR, FESEM, and UV-Visible spectroscopy, and were explored as adsorbent for effective sequestration of azo dye (Brilliant Blue R-250) from aqueous media. Various factors affecting the adsorption efficiency of synthesized nanoparticles (bare/ionic liquid-modified) such as concentration of dye, pH of reaction media, dose of nanoparticles, and reaction time were thoroughly investigated with varying experimental conditions; on a magnetic stirrer and in a sonicator. The results exhibited a high adsorption efficiency of ionic liquid-modified nanoparticles for removal of dye as compared to the bare one. Also, an enhanced adsorption was observed via sonication in comparison with magnetic stirring. Different isotherms such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Tempkin were elaborated. Evaluation of adsorption kinetics showed a linear pseudo-second-order equation for adsorption process. The exothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption was further confirmed by thermodynamic investigations. As per the results obtained, it is suggested that the fabricated ionic liquid-modified ZnO nanoparticles could successfully remediate the toxic anionic dye from aqueous media. Hence, this system can be utilized for large-scale industrial applications.

Ionic liquid based composites: A versatile materials for remediation of aqueous environmental contaminants

Water pollution is one of the most aggravated problems threatening the sustainability of human race and other life forms due to the rapid pace of civilization and industrialization. A long history exists of release of hazardous pollutants into the water bodies due to selfish human activities since the Industrial Revolution, but no effort has been completely successful in curbing the activities that result in the degradation of our environment. These pollutants are harmful, carcinogenic and have adverse health effects to all forms of life. Thus, remarkable efforts have been geared up to obtain clean water by exploiting science and technology. The application of Ionic liquids (ILs) as sustainable materials have received widespread attention since the last decade. Their interesting properties, simplicity in operation and satisfactory binding capacities in elimination of the contaminants makes them a valuable prospect to be utilized in wastewater treatment. Immobilizing and grafting the solid supports with ILs have fetched efficient results to exploit their potential in the adsorptive removal processes. This review provides an understanding of the recent developments and outlines the possible utility of IL based nano adsorbents in the removal of organic compounds, dyes and heavy metal ions from aqueous medium. Effect of several parameters such as sorbent dosage, pH and temperature on the removal efficiency has also been discussed. Moreover, the adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics and mechanism are comprehensively studied. It is envisioned that the literature gathered in this article will guide the budding scientists to put their interest in this area of research in the days to come.

Water treatment using stimuli-responsive polymers

Surface functionalization of MXene with chitosan through in-situ formation of polyimidazoles and its adsorption properties

In this work, a novel imidazoles-MXene hybrid composite, namely polyimidazoles chain overlaying on the surface of MXene (Ti₃C₂@IMIZ), was prepared by a simple method. Through this strategy, imidazoles can be in situ growth on the surface of MXenes via a facile multicomponent reaction using chitosan as a renewable reactant. Based on the characterization results, we demonstrated that a thin layer imidazoles with an ordered chain structure was embedded on the surface of Ti₃C₂, which resulted in the formation of a novel imidazoles-MXene hybrid composite. The adsorption performance of Ti₃C₂@IMIZ for removal environmental pollutants was evaluated using heavy metal ions of Cr(Ⅵ) as adsorbate. Detailed adsorption characteristics of Ti₃C₂@IMIZ including operational factors, adsorption kinetics and isotherms models were investigated. XPS analysis showed that Cr(VI) was converted to Cr(III) with low toxicity during the adsorption process. The adsorption of Cr(VI) and reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) contribute to elimination of Cr(VI) species. The adsorption behavior and process analysis show that the adsorption mechanism is mainly physical adsorption through electrostatic interaction. The excellent reproducibility suggests that Ti₃C₂@IMIZ may be a potential candidate for remove of Cr(Ⅵ) in actual sewage treatment.

Synthesis of Silver-Impregnated Magnetite Mesoporous Silica Composites for Removing Iodide in Aqueous Solution

Mag@silica-Ag composite has a high sorption ability for I- in aqueous solution due to its high surface area and strong affinity for the studied anion. The material adsorbed I- rapidly during the initial contact time (in 45 min, η = 80%) and reached adsorption equilibrium after 2 h. Moreover, mag@silica-Ag proved to selectively remove I- from a mixture of Cl-, NO3- and I-. The adsorption behavior fitted the Langmuir isotherm perfectly and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Based on the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacity of mag@silica-Ag was 0.82 mmol/g, which is significantly higher than previously developed adsorbents. This study introduces a practical application of a high-capacity adsorbent in removing radioactive I- from wastewaters.

Novel Magnetic Nano Silica Synthesis Using Barley Husk Waste for Removing Petroleum from Polluted Water for Environmental Sustainability

Water contamination by petroleum and its byproducts presents a major challenge worldwide. It is critical that sustainable treatment methods be employed for the removal of such contaminants from polluted water. For this investigation, magnetic nano silica (M-NS) was synthesized using agricultural waste from barley husk using a two-step process that is environmentally friendly and uses green chemistry synthesis. The barley husk waste was used as a precursor for the synthesis of nano-silica following a low energy and sustainable method of acid reflux and heat treatment. Nano-silica was then used for the synthesis of M-NS, with the addition of a magnetic solution of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The magnetic nano-silica particles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Zeta potential analysis (ZETA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Magnetic nano-silica particles were observed to have an average diameter of 162 nm and appeared to be hydrophobic, with a large surface area of ~120 m2/gm. Due to these characteristics, magnetic nano-silica was used as an adsorbent for the removal of petrol contaminants from water. The experimental procedure showed that only 0.6 gm. of M-NS was used on 40 mg/L concentration of petroleum and the experiments recorded a high uptake efficiency of 85%. The sorption was shown to be an effective process since a high amount of petroleum was removed. The study further demonstrates that as the amount of sorbent is increased, the sorption capacity also increases until an equilibrium is reached. The results of this study establish that synthesis of M-NS, using environmentally sustainable processes, has the required characteristics to serve as sorbent for petroleum and its byproducts from contaminated water, thus enhancing environmental sustainability.

Magnetic Ionic Liquid Nanocatalyst to Improve Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Epoxy Nanocomposites

New magnetic imidazolium ionic liquid (IIL) was synthesized to improve the curing, mechanical, and thermal characteristics of the epoxy/polyamine system. In this respect, 2-(4-minophenyl)-1.3-bis(triethoxysilyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium acetate as IIL was synthesized and characterized by different spectroscopy tools. The IIL was used as capping to prepare Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) as new Fe₃O₄-IIL NPs. The thermal stability, morphology, crystal lattice structures, and magnetic properties were evaluated to confirm the formation of uniform, thermal, stable, and superparamagnetic Fe₃O₄-IIL NPs. The prepared Fe₃O₄-IIL NPs were mixed with an epoxy/polyamine system to improve the curing, thermal, and mechanical properties of epoxy through chemical reactions. The dynamic mechanical analyzer and differential scanning calorimeter were used to investigate the flexibility and storage modulus of the cured epoxy/polyamine system in the absence and presence of Fe₃O₄-IIL NPs. The atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope were used to evaluate the dispersion and embedding of Fe₃O₄-IIL NPs into epoxy matrix. The thermal, mechanical, and surface morphologies data confirmed that the incorporation of Fe₃O₄-IIL NPs using 3 wt. % during the curing of an epoxy/polyamine system produces superior epoxy films without cracks, holes, and NPs agglomeration.

Facile synthesis of Silver@Eggshell nanocomposite: A heterogeneous catalyst for the removal of heavy metal ions, toxic dyes and microbial contaminants from water

In this work, silver nanoparticles have been synthesized with an average particle size of 35 nm, within 90s, using microwave and Sapindus mukorossi extract as a stabilizing agent. The AgNps were surface immobilized on eggshells (ES) to obtain Ag@ES, which was characterized by UV-Vis, UV-DRS, FT-IR, ICP-OES, TGA-DSC, SEM-EDX, XRD and XPS. Its applicability as an environmental catalyst was evaluated by Cr (VI) adsorption, photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange, eriochrome black-T, methylene blue, rhodamine-B as model dyes and microbial inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The results revealed that Ag@ES exhibited maximum adsorption capacity of 93 mg/g for Cr (VI) ion and degradation efficiency of ~90-98% for removing anionic and cationic dyes. Further, it showed a minimum inhibitory concentration of 15.6, 7.8 and 31.2 μg/mL for S. aureus, E. coli and C. albicans respectively. Moreover, the Ag@ES being a heterogeneous catalyst can be regenerated and reused without significant loss in its efficiency.
