On the Role of Nanofluids in Thermal-hydraulic Performance of Heat Exchangers-A Review

Crystal layer growth with embedded carbon-based particles from effervescent tablet-based nanofluids

Crystallization occurs as dissolved substances gradually solidify into crystal layers within a liquid, which can increase the capability of fluids to transfer heat. In this study, the growth of crystal layer in nanofluids produced from carbon-based effervescent tablets was examined. The tablets were fabricated by combining multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium phosphate monobasic (NaH2PO4), and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). The effervescent tablets were formulated with MWCNTs, NaH2PO4, and Na2CO3 at a weight ratio of 1:5.1:2.26, respectively. These tablets were then immersed in distilled water (DW) and seawater (SW) to produce 0.05 vol.% to 0.15 vol.% MWCNT suspensions. Then, the dispersion stability, thermal conductivity, and crystal layer growth of the nanofluids were characterized. The results showed that the DW-based nanofluids were more stable than their SW-based counterparts. Additionally, the 0.05 vol.% DW-based suspension exhibited greater long-term stability than those of the 0.15 vol.% suspensions, whereas the SW-based nanofluid exhibited the opposite behaviour. The greatest increases in thermal conductivity were 3.29% and 3.13% for 0.15 vol.% MWCNTs in DW and SW, respectively. The crystallization process occurred in nanofluids that contained more than 0.05 vol.% MWCNTs and exhibited a greater growth rate in SW-based suspensions with high effervescent agent concentrations.

A Review of Nanofluids as Coolants for Thermal Management Systems in Fuel Cell Vehicles

With the development of high-power fuel cell vehicles, heat dissipation requirements have become increasingly stringent. Although conventional cooling techniques improve the heat dissipation capacity by increasing the fan rotating speed or radiator dimensions, high energy consumption and limited engine compartment space prevent their implementation. Moreover, the insufficient heat transfer capacity of existing coolants limits the enhancement of heat dissipation performance. Therefore, exploring novel coolants to replace traditional coolants is important. Nanofluids composed of nanoparticles and base liquids are promising alternatives, effectively improving the heat transfer capacity of the base liquid. However, challenges remain that prevent their use in fuel cell vehicles. These include issues regarding the nanofluid stability and cleaning, erosion and abrasion, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. In this review, we summarize the nanofluid applications in oil-fueled, electric, and fuel cell vehicles. Subsequently, we provide a comprehensive literature review of the challenges and future research directions of nanofluids as coolants in fuel cell vehicles. This review demonstrates the potential of nanofluids as an alternative thermal management system that can facilitate transition toward a low-carbon, energy-secure economy. It will serve as a reference for researchers to focus on new areas that could drive the field forward.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of forced convection heat transfer with CNTs and CuO water based nano-fluids

Improving efficiency of the nuclear power plants has always been of interest for researchers. Recently, Nanofluid technology are developed to increase the heat extraction from a hot surface. Throughout this work, the thermal hydraulic behavior of Nanofluid was experimentally investigated and theoretically predicted. For this purpose, an experimental apparatus (setup) was designed and constructed to study the effect of the kind of Nanomaterial and the concentration of nanoparticles. Two kinds of Nanomaterial, Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs) and Copper Oxide (CuO) were used. In an experimental investigation of CNTs, two nanoparticles concentration was used; 0.05 and 0.1% vol. CNTs/Water. CuO nanofluid was investigated experimentally with 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5% vol.CuO/Water. These concentrations of nanofluid were investigated at a constant mass flow rate and different heat fluxes, (1000, 3000 and 5000 W/m2). The test rig was modeled theoretically using ANSYS FLUENT 17.2 code and validated to predict the thermal hydraulic performance of the Nanofluid. The five concentrations of CNTs and CuO nanofluids were theoretically investigated. It was found that the measured wall surface temperatures of CNTs and CuO nanoparticles decreased remarkably as heat flux decreased and the nanoparticles concentrations increased. There was an increase in forced thermal efficiency of nanofluids as compared to base fluid. The experimental results showed a maximum heat transfer coefficient enhancement of 26.55% for a nanofluid prepared with 0.1% vol. CNTs and 20.6% with 0.5% vol. CuO. A good agreement was detected after comparing experimental results with the investigated model.

Graphene-Based Nanofluids: Production Parameter Effects on Thermophysical Properties and Dispersion Stability

In this study, the thermophysical properties and dispersion stability of graphene-based nanofluids were investigated. This was conducted to determine the influence of fabrication temperature, nanomaterial concentration, and surfactant ratio on the suspension effective properties and stability condition. First, the nanopowder was characterized in terms of crystalline structure and size, morphology, and elemental content. Next, the suspensions were produced at 10 °C to 70 °C using different concentrations of surfactants and nanomaterials. Then, the thermophysical properties and physical stability of the nanofluids were determined. The density of the prepared nanofluids was found to be higher than their base fluid, but this property showed a decrease with the increase in fabrication temperature. Moreover, the specific heat capacity showed very high sensitivity toward the graphene and surfactant concentrations, where 28.12% reduction in the property was achieved. Furthermore, the preparation temperature was shown to be the primary parameter that effects the nanofluid viscosity and thermal conductivity, causing a maximum reduction of ~4.9% in viscosity and ~125.72% increase in thermal conductivity. As for the surfactant, using low concentration demonstrated a short-term stabilization capability, whereas a 1:1 weight ratio of graphene to surfactant and higher caused the dispersion to be physically stable for 45 consecutive days. The findings of this work are believed to be beneficial for further research investigations on thermal applications of moderate temperatures.

Application of Nanofluids in Gas Turbine and Intercoolers-A Comprehensive Review

Today, the optimal use of non-renewable energy sources, reducing pollution, and increasing the efficiency of power-generating cycles are of particular importance. There are several ways to increase the efficiency of gas turbines; one that has recently attracted attention is to use an intercooler. However, the efficiency of the heat exchanger used in intercoolers depends on the type of heat exchanger, the characteristics of the operating fluid and the thermal boundary layers, and the pump speed. Improving the thermophysical properties of the working fluid is a passive method of increasing heat transfer, which has attracted the attention of those researching engineering applications. The current review addresses the latest methods of improving gas turbine efficiency using nanofluids and includes experimental and numerical studies. First, the general principles governing turbines are described, then the commonly used types of heat exchangers are introduced. Finally, studies on the use of nanofluids in heat exchangers are reviewed. The technology of producing nanoparticles that can be used in heat exchangers is also discussed. This review article can provide the reader with comprehensive information on making nanofluids and using them in heat exchangers used as intercoolers.

Nanofluid research advances: Preparation, characteristics and applications in food processing

There has been growing interest and substantial improvement in thermal processes for enhancing the heat transfer rate in food industry applications. The replacement of conventional heat transfer fluids with nanofluids is now being considered as a novel and emerging solution to the heat transfer problem of the food processing sector. This review covers state-of-the-art methods for production and application of these nanofluids with emphasis on the decontamination of liquid foods. The review also discusses the influence of processing conditions such as temperature and nanoparticle concentration on the thermal and viscous characteristics of the developed nanofluids. Further, the effect of these developed nanofluids on the quality attributes of food materials has also been reviewed and analyzed. Based on the current technological status, certain knowledge gaps in nanofluid research have been identified, including controlled (shape and size) and systematic experimental studies, stability of nanofluids with increasing thermal cycles, increasing the compatibility of base fluid to nanomaterials, and toxicity and environmental impact assessment.

Effect of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes-Based Nanofluids on Marine Gas Turbine Intercooler Performance

Coolants play a major role in the performance of heat exchanging systems. In a marine gas turbine engine, an intercooler is used to reduce the compressed gas temperature between the compressor stages. The thermophysical properties of the coolant running within the intercooler directly influence the level of enhancement in the performance of the unit. Therefore, employing working fluids of exceptional thermal properties is beneficial for improving performance in such applications, compared to conventional fluids. This paper investigates the effect of utilizing nanofluids for enhancing the performance of a marine gas turbine intercooler. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-water with nanofluids at 0.01–0.10 vol % concentration were produced using a two-step controlled-temperature approach ranging from 10 °C to 50 °C. Next, the thermophysical properties of the as-prepared suspensions, such as density, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and viscosity, were characterized. The intercooler performance was then determined by employing the measured data of the MWCNTs-based nanofluids thermophysical properties in theoretical formulae. This includes determining the intercooler effectiveness, heat transfer rate, gas outlet temperature, coolant outlet temperature, and pumping power. Finally, a comparison between a copper-based nanofluid from the literature with the as-prepared MWCNTs-based nanofluid was performed to determine the influence of each of these suspensions on the intercooler performance.

Performance Evaluation of the Electric Machine Cooling System Employing Nanofluid as an Advanced Coolant

In this paper, the overall performance of an electric machine cooling system was examined in terms of heat transfer and fluid flow. The structure of the cooling system was based on the cooling jacket method. The cooling jacket contains spiral channels surrounding the stator and end-windings of the electric machine. Al2O3-water nanofluid is used inside the channels as the cooling fluid. The concentration of nanoparticles and the geometric structure of the cooling system have special effects on both aspects of heat transfer and fluid flow. Therefore, in this paper, the overall performance of the cooling system was evaluated by considering these effects. This study compared the importance of heat transfer and fluid flow performances on the overall performance of the cooling system. Numerical analyses were performed by 3D computational fluid dynamics and 3D fluid motion analysis. The analyses were carried out based on the 3D finite element method using the pressure-based solver of the Ansys Fluent software in steady mode.

Carbon-Based Nanofluids and Their Advances towards Heat Transfer Applications-A Review

Nanofluids have opened the doors towards the enhancement of many of today's existing thermal applications performance. This is because these advanced working fluids exhibit exceptional thermophysical properties, and thus making them excellent candidates for replacing conventional working fluids. On the other hand, nanomaterials of carbon-base were proven throughout the literature to have the highest thermal conductivity among all other types of nanoscaled materials. Therefore, when these materials are homogeneously dispersed in a base fluid, the resulting suspension will theoretically attain orders of magnitude higher effective thermal conductivity than its counterpart. Despite this fact, there are still some challenges that are associated with these types of fluids. The main obstacle is the dispersion stability of the nanomaterials, which can lead the attractive properties of the nanofluid to degrade with time, up to the point where they lose their effectiveness. For such reason, this work has been devoted towards providing a systematic review on nanofluids of carbon-base, precisely; carbon nanotubes, graphene, and nanodiamonds, and their employment in thermal systems commonly used in the energy sectors. Firstly, this work reviews the synthesis approaches of the carbon-based feedstock. Then, it explains the different nanofluids fabrication methods. The dispersion stability is also discussed in terms of measuring techniques, enhancement methods, and its effect on the suspension thermophysical properties. The study summarizes the development in the correlations used to predict the thermophysical properties of the dispersion. Furthermore, it assesses the influence of these advanced working fluids on parabolic trough solar collectors, nuclear reactor systems, and air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Lastly, the current gap in scientific knowledge is provided to set up future research directions.

Pool Boiling of Nanofluids on Biphilic Surfaces: An Experimental and Numerical Study

This study addresses the combination of customized surface modification with the use of nanofluids, to infer on its potential to enhance pool-boiling heat transfer. Hydrophilic surfaces patterned with superhydrophobic regions were developed and used as surface interfaces with different nanofluids (water with gold, silver, aluminum and alumina nanoparticles), in order to evaluate the effect of the nature and concentration of the nanoparticles in bubble dynamics and consequently in heat transfer processes. The main qualitative and quantitative analysis was based on extensive post-processing of synchronized high-speed and thermographic images. To study the nucleation of a single bubble in pool boiling condition, a numerical model was also implemented. The results show an evident benefit of using biphilic patterns with well-established distances between the superhydrophobic regions. This can be observed in the resulting plot of the dissipated heat flux for a biphilic pattern with seven superhydrophobic spots, δ = 1/d and an imposed heat flux of 2132 w/m². In this case, the dissipated heat flux is almost constant (except in the instant t* ≈ 0.9 when it reaches a peak of 2400 W/m²), whilst when using only a single superhydrophobic spot, where the heat flux dissipation reaches the maximum shortly after the detachment of the bubble, dropping continuously until a new necking phase starts. The biphilic patterns also allow a controlled bubble coalescence, which promotes fluid convection at the hydrophilic spacing between the superhydrophobic regions, which clearly contributes to cool down the surface. This effect is noticeable in the case of employing the Ag 1 wt% nanofluid, with an imposed heat flux of 2132 W/m², where the coalescence of the drops promotes a surface cooling, identified by a temperature drop of 0.7 °C in the hydrophilic areas. Those areas have an average temperature of 101.8 °C, whilst the average temperature of the superhydrophobic spots at coalescence time is of 102.9 °C. For low concentrations as the ones used in this work, the effect of the nanofluids was observed to play a minor role. This can be observed on the slight discrepancy of the heat dissipation decay that occurred in the necking stage of the bubbles for nanofluids with the same kind of nanoparticles and different concentration. For the Au 0.1 wt% nanofluid, a heat dissipation decay of 350 W/m² was reported, whilst for the Au 0.5 wt% nanofluid, the same decay was only of 280 W/m². The results of the numerical model concerning velocity fields indicated a sudden acceleration at the bubble detachment, as can be qualitatively analyzed in the thermographic images obtained in this work. Additionally, the temperature fields of the analyzed region present the same tendency as the experimental results.

Gas Turbine Intercoolers: Introducing Nanofluids—A Mini-Review

Coolant is one of the main factors affecting the overall thermal performance of the intercooler for the gas turbine intercooled cycle. The thermal conductivity of conventional coolants, such as water, is relatively low when compared to solid conducting materials, and therefore can hinder the progress towards achieving a compact and highly effective intercooler. Nanofluids are advanced types of working fluids that contain dispersed nanoparticles in conventional basefluids, and as such possess superior thermal conductivity compared to their counterparts. In this paper, a short review on the effect of different nanofluids on the thermal performance of gas turbines intercoolers is presented for the first time. Firstly, this work reviews the different designs of intercoolers used in gas turbines intercooled cycles. Then, it explains the different types of nanofluids and their fabrication processes. The effective parameters, such as physical stability, thermal conductivity, and viscosity are also highlighted and discussed. Furthermore, the level of enhancement in the performance of intercoolers utilizing nanofluids is demonstrated and evaluated. Lastly, the current challenges and future research directions in this field are provided.
