Broadband Filter and Adjustable Extinction Ratio Modulator Based on Metal-Graphene Hybrid Metamaterials

Realization of absorption, filtering, and sensing in a single metamaterial structure combined with functional materials

In this paper, a hybrid vanadium dioxide (VO₂)-graphene-based bifunctional metamaterial is proposed. The realization of the different functions of perfect transmission and high absorption is based on the insulator-metal phase transition of VO₂ material. The Fermi energy level of graphene can be treated to dynamically tune the absorption and transmission rates of the metamaterial structure. As a result, when VO₂ is in the insulating state, the designed metamaterial can be used as a filter providing three adjustable passbands with center frequencies of 1.892 THz, 1.124 THz, and 0.94 THz, and the corresponding transmittances reach 93.11%, 98.62%, and 90.01%, respectively. The filter also shows good stopband characteristics and exhibits good sensing performance at the resonant frequencies of 1.992 THz and 2.276 THz. When VO₂ is in metal state, the metamaterial structure acts as a double-band absorber, with three absorption peaks (>90%) in the range of 0.684 THz to 0.924 THz, 2.86 THz to 3.04 THz, and 3.28 THz to 3.372 THz, respectively. The designed structure is insensitive to the polarization of vertically incident terahertz waves and still maintains good absorption performances over a large range of incidence angles. Finally, the effects of geometric parameters on the absorption and transmission properties of the hybrid bifunctional metamaterials have also been discussed. The switchable metamaterial structures proposed in this paper provide great potential in terahertz application fields, such as filtering, smart sensing, switching, tunable absorbers, and so on.

Polarization-Independent Optoelectronic Modulator Based on Graphene Ridge Structure

In this paper, we propose a polarization-independent optoelectronic modulator based on the electrical absorption effect of graphene. Firstly, we use the simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics to design the structure, and find via changing the applied voltage on both ends of the graphene that the equivalent refractive index of graphene can be changed, thus changing the light absorption capacity of the modulator. The waveguides in the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes have almost the same extinction coefficient by making a double-layer graphene ridge structure in the center of the silicon-based waveguide, which can achieve approaching modulation depth in the TM and TE modes. At 1550 nm wavelength, the two-dimensional cross-section of the structure is analyzed by the FEM method using COMSOL Multiphysics to obtain the effective refractive index of the structure. The simulation results show that when the distance between the double-layer graphene isolation layer is d = 20 nm, the TE and TM modes can achieve extinction ratios up to 110 dB over the wide communication band by selecting appropriate “ON” and “OFF” switching points. The bandwidth is 173.78 GHz and the insertion loss is only 0.0338 dB.

Design of an On-Chip Plasmonic Modulator Based on Hybrid Orthogonal Junctions Using Vanadium Dioxide

We present the design of a plasmonic modulator based on hybrid orthogonal silver junctions using vanadium dioxide as the modulating material on a silicon-on-insulator. The modulator has an ultra-compact footprint of 1.8 μm × 1 μm with a 100 nm × 100 nm modulating section based on the hybrid orthogonal geometry. The modulator takes advantage of the large change in the refractive index of vanadium dioxide during its phase transition to achieve a high modulation depth of 46.89 dB/μm. The simulated device has potential applications in the development of next generation high frequency photonic modulators for optical communications which require nanometer scale footprints, large modulation depth and small insertion losses.

Ultra-broadband terahertz bandpass filter with dynamically tunable attenuation based on a graphene-metal hybrid metasurface

We propose an ultra-broadband terahertz bandpass filter with dynamically tunable attenuation based on a graphene-metal hybrid metasurface. The metasurface unit cell is composed of two metal stripes enclosed with a graphene rectangular ring. Results show that when the metasurface is normally illuminated by a terahertz wave polarized along the metal stripes, it can act as an ultra-broadband bandpass filter over the spectral range from 1.49 THz to 4.05 THz, corresponding to a fractional bandwidth of 92%. Remarkably, high transmittance above 90% covering the range from 1.98 THz to 3.95 THz can be achieved. By changing the Fermi level of graphene, we find that the attenuation within the passband can be dynamically tuned from 2% to 66%. We expect that the proposed ultra-broadband terahertz bandpass filter with tunable attenuation will find applications in terahertz communication and detection and sensing systems.

Inductively tuned modified split ring resonator based quad band epsilon negative (ENG) with near zero index (NZI) metamaterial for multiband antenna performance enhancement

An inductively tuned modified split-ring resonator-based metamaterial (MTM) is presented in this article that provides multiple resonances covering S, C, X, and Ku-bands. The MTM is designed on an FR-4 substrate with a thickness of 1.5 mm and an electrical dimension of 0.063λ × 0.063λ where wavelength, λ is calculated at 2.38 GHz. The resonator part is a combination of three squared copper rings and one circular ring in which all the square rings are modified shaped, and the inner two rings are interconnected. The resonance frequency is tuned by adding inductive metal strips in parallel two vertical splits of the outer ring that causes a significant shift of resonances towards the lower frequencies and a highly effective medium ratio (EMR) of 15.75. Numerical simulation software CST microwave studio is used for the simulation and performance analysis of the proposed unit cell. The MTM unit cell exhibits six resonances of transmission coefficient (S₂₁) at 2.38, 4.24, 5.98, 9.55, 12.1, and 14.34 GHz covering S, C, X, and Ku-bands with epsilon negative (ENG), near-zero permeability, and near-zero refractive index (NZI). The simulated result is validated by experiment with good agreement between them. The performance of the array of the unit cells is also investigated in both simulation and measurement. The equivalent circuit modeling has been accomplished using Advanced Design Software (ADS) that shows a similar S₂₁ response compared to CST simulation. Noteworthy to mention that with the copper backplane, the same unit cell provides multiband absorption properties with four major absorption peaks of 99.6%, 95.7%, 99.9%, 92.7% with quality factors(Q-factor) of 28.4, 34.4, 23, and 32 at 3.98, 5.5, 11.73 and 13.47 GHz, respectively which can be applied for sensing and detecting purposes. The application of an array of the unit cells is investigated using it as a superstrate of an antenna that provides a 73% (average) increase of antenna gain. Due to its simple design, compact dimension with high EMR, ENG property with near-zero permeability, this multiband NZI metamaterial can be used for microwave applications, especially for multiband antenna gain enhancement.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency-Like Effect by Dark-Dark Mode Coupling

Electromagnetically induced transparency-like (EIT-like) effect is a promising research area for applications of slow light, sensing and metamaterials. The EIT-like effect is generally formed by the destructive interference of bright-dark mode coupling and bright-bright mode coupling. There are seldom reports about EIT-like effect realized by the coupling of two dark modes. In this paper, we numerically and theoretically demonstrated that the EIT-like effect is achieved through dark-dark mode coupling of two waveguide resonances in a compound nanosystem with metal grating and multilayer structure. If we introduce |1⟩, |2⟩ and |3⟩ to represent the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) resonance, waveguide resonance in layer 2, and waveguide resonance in layer 4, the destructive interference occurs between two pathways of |0⟩→|1⟩→|2⟩ and |0⟩→|1⟩→|2⟩→|3⟩→|2⟩, where |0⟩ is the ground state without excitation. Our work will stimulate more studies on EIT-like effect with dark-dark mode coupling in other systems.
