Solar-Powered Photodegradation of Pollutant Dyes Using Silver-Embedded Porous TiO2 Nanofibers

A review on transition metal oxides based photocatalysts for degradation of synthetic organic pollutants

This review provides insight into the current research trend in transition metal oxides (TMOs)-based photocatalysis in removing the organic colouring matters from water. For easy understanding, the research progress has been presented in four generations according to the catalyst composition and mode of application, viz: single component TMOs (the first-generation), doped TMOs/binary TMOs/doped binary TMOs (the second-generation), inactive/active support-immobilized TMOs (the third-generation), and ternary/quaternary compositions (the fourth-generation). The first two generations represent suspended catalysts, the third generation is supported catalysts, and the fourth generation can be suspended or supported. The review provides an elaborated comparison between suspended and supported catalysts, their general/specific requirements, key factors controlling degradation, and the methodologies for performance evaluation. All the plausible fundamental and advanced dye degradation mechanisms involved in each generation of catalysts were demonstrated. The existing challenges in TMOs-based photocatalysis and how the researchers approach the hitch to resolve it effectively are discussed. Future research trends are also presented.

Nanocomposites of Cu2O with plasmonic metals (Au, Ag): design, synthesis, and photocatalytic applications

Metal-semiconductor nanocomposites have been utilized in a multitude of applications in a wide array of fields, prompting substantial interest from different scientific sectors. Of particular interest are semiconductors paired with plasmonic metals due to the unique optical properties that arise from the individual interactions of these materials with light and the intercomponent movement of charge carriers in their heterostructure. This review focuses on the pairing of Cu2O semiconductor with strongly plasmonic metals, particularly Au and Ag. The design and synthesis of Au-Cu2O and Ag-Cu2O nanostructures, along with ternary nanostructures composed of the three components, are described, with in-depth discussion on the synthesis techniques and tunable parameters. The effects of compositing on the optical and electronic properties of the nanocomposites in the context of photocatalysis are discussed as well. Concluding remarks and potential areas for exploration are presented in the last section.

Hydrothermally synthesized Ag-TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) for photocatalytic dye degradation and antibacterial activity

This work successfully utilised eco-friendly green synthesis to produce Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs). As pollution and energy limitations have become global issues, there is an ongoing need to develop more effective catalysts through straightforward and environmentally friendly methods. The Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) XRD pattern exhibits an anatase TiO₂ and FCC crystal structure of Ag nanoparticles. The SEM investigation revealed a nanofiber-like surface morphology. The Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) exhibits an optical band gap energy is 2.5 eV. Methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), Congo red (CR), and crystal violet (CV) dye aqueous solutions were used to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of the synthesized Ag-modified TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) under direct sunlight irradiation. The effects of catalyst size on the efficient breakdown of MB dye were also investigated. The optimum catalyst concentration was found to be at 0.02 mg/mL. At 120 min of direct sunlight, the highest photosynthetic degradation efficiency (DE percentage) of 94% was achieved for MB dye. Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) have been demonstrated to have exceptional antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria E-Coli. Because of these great qualities, it seems likely that the Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) made could be a great photocatalyst for getting dye pollutants out of wastewater.

Rapid incorporation of gold nanoparticles onto graphene oxide-polymer nanofiber membranes for photothermally-accelerated water purification

This work demonstrates the rapid coating of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto electrospun composite polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers containing a large amount of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for photothermally-driven applications. A modification of GO with a cationic surfactant greatly improves its loading efficiency into the PAN nanofibers, and the subsequent hydrazine treatment readily converts the integrated GO into rGO. Rapid loading of AuNPs onto these membranes results in measurably higher photothermal heating characteristics than the pristine PAN, GO-PAN, and rGO-PAN membranes under a solar-simulated light source. The light-induced heating properties are then utilized in the removal of organic dyes in an aqueous solution. While the GO-PAN and rGO-PAN membranes remove the dyes via physical adsorption, the AuNP-loaded membranes show an additional catalytic decomposition process, resulting in detectably faster removal rates. The degradation of the organic dyes is accelerated under a solar simulated light source due to the light-enhanced heating and photocatalytic properties of the integrated AuNPs. The ability to maximize the dual properties of these membranes can greatly reduce toxic organic pollutants, which can lead to the development of practical water purification systems under sunlight irradiation.

Eco-toxicological effect of a commercial dye Rhodamine B on freshwater microalgae Chlorella vulgaris

In this study, the acute toxicity effects of a fluorescent xanthene dye, Rhodamine B (RhB), widely used in textile, paper, and leather industries was investigated on a freshwater microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. The acute toxicity of RhB on C. vulgaris was determined by examining the growth, cell morphology, pigment production, protein content, and the activities of oxidative stress enzymes. Based on the results of the toxicity study of 24-96 h, the median inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) values ranged from 69.94 to 31.29 mg L^-1. The growth of C. vulgaris was conspicuously inhibited by RhB exposure, and the cell surfaces appeared to be seriously shrunk in SEM analysis. The growth of C. vulgaris was hindered after exposure to graded concentrations (10-50 mg L^-1) of RhB. A significant reduction in growth rate, pigment synthesis (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid), and protein content was recorded in a dose-dependent manner. After 96 h exposure of C. vulgaris to 50 mg L^-1 RhB, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids, and protein contents were reduced by 71.59, 74.90, 65.84, and 74.20%, respectively. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) also increased markedly in the presence of RhB. A notable effect was observed on oxidative enzymes catalase and peroxidase, indicating that oxidative stress may be the primary factor in the inhibition of growth and pigment synthesis. Consequently, the experimental acute toxicity data were compared to the QSAR prediction made by the ECOSAR programme. Results showed that the experimental acute toxicity values were 67.74-fold lower than the ECOSAR predicted values. The study provides convincing evidence for the metabolic disruption in the ubiquitous microalgae C. vulgaris due to the RhB dye toxicity.

Fabrication and Photocatalytic Properties of Electrospun Fe-Doped TiO2 Nanofibers Using Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone Precursors

For the removal of pollutants, a modified TiO₂ photocatalyst is attracting attention. Fe-doped TiO₂ nanofibers were prepared through a combination of electrospinning and calcination. Morphological characterization of the sample was conducted using field-emission scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. The crystal structure of each sample was analyzed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and Fast Fourier Transform imaging. The average diameter of the Fe-doped TiO₂ nanofibers was measured to be 161.5 nm and that of the pure TiO₂ nanofibers was 181.5 nm. The crystal phase when heat treated at 350 °C was anatase for TiO₂ nanofibers and rutile for Fe-doped TiO₂ nanofibers. The crystal phase of the TiO₂ matrix was easily transitioned to rutile by Fe-doping. The photocatalytic performance of each sample was compared via the photodegradation of methylene blue and acid orange 7 under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation. In the Fe-doped TiO₂ nanofibers, photodegradation rates of 38.3% and 27.9% were measured under UV irradiation and visible light, respectively. Although other catalysts were not activated, the photodegradation rate in the Fe-doped TiO₂ nanofibers was 9.6% using acid orange 7 and visible light. For improved photocatalytic activity, it is necessary to study the concentration control of the Fe dopant.

Dual Plasmonic Au-Cu2-x S Nanocomposites: Design Strategies and Photothermal Properties

Coupling two different materials to create a hybrid nanostructured system is a powerful strategy for achieving synergistically enhanced properties and advanced functionalities. In the case of Au and Cu_2-x S, their combination on the nanoscale results in dual plasmonic Au-Cu_2-x S nanocomposites that exhibit intense photon absorption in both the visible and the near-infrared spectral ranges. Their strong light-absorbing properties translate to superior photothermal transduction efficiency, making them attractive in photothermal-based applications. There are several nanostructure configurations that are possible for the Au-Cu_2-x S system, and the successful fabrication of a particular architecture often requires a carefully planned synthetic strategy. In this Minireview, the different synthetic approaches that can be employed to produce rationally designed Au-Cu_2-x S nanocomposites are presented, with a focus on the experimental protocols that can lead to heterodimer, core-shell, reverse core-shell, and yolk-shell configurations. The photothermal behavior of these materials is also discussed, providing a glimpse of their potential use as photothermally active agents in therapeutic and theranostic applications.

Prospects of Synthesized Magnetic TiO2-Based Membranes for Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Global accessibility to clean water has stressed the need to develop advanced technologies for the removal of toxic organic and inorganic pollutants and pathogens from wastewater to meet stringent discharge water quality limits. Conventionally, the high separation efficiencies, relative low costs, small footprint, and ease of operation associated with integrated photocatalytic-membrane (IPM) technologies are gaining an all-inclusive attention. Conversely, photocatalysis and membrane technologies face some degree of setbacks, which limit their worldwide application in wastewater settings for the treatment of emerging contaminants. Therefore, this review elucidated titanium dioxide (TiO2), based on its unique properties (low cost, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and high chemical stability), to have great potential in engineering photocatalytic-based membranes for reclamation of wastewater for re-use. The environmental pathway of TiO2 nanoparticles, membranes and configuration types, modification process, characteristics, and applications of IPMs in water settings are discussed. Future research and prospects of magnetized TiO2-based membrane technology is highlighted as a viable water purification technology to mitigate fouling in the membrane process and photocatalyst recoverability. In addition, exploring life cycle assessment research would also aid in utilizing the concept and pressing for large-scale application of this technology.
