Encapsulation Capacity of β-Cyclodextrin Stabilized Silver Nanoparticles towards Creatinine Enhances the Colorimetric Sensing of Hydrogen Peroxide in Urine

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using the extract of spent coffee used for paper-based hydrogen peroxide sensing device

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) has attracted considerable attention for use as a disinfectant ingredient for various applications over the decades. The use of H₂O₂ within the safety regulations can avoid its toxicity to human health and the environment. In this study, a paper-based sensor containing green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (P-AgNPs) was developed for use in a smartphone in the determination of the H₂O₂ concentration. In the synthesis process, an extract of spent coffee grounds was used as a bioreducing agent. The effects of reaction time and silver nitrate (AgNO₃) concentration on the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were investigated. The optimum conditions for the preparation of P-AgNPs were determined to be 100 mM AgNO₃ (P-AgNPs-100) and 15 h synthesis time. The P-AgNPs-100 sensor exhibited high sensitivity with a detection limit of 1.26 mM H₂O₂, which might be suitable for the detection of H₂O₂-based household and beverage sanitizers. The H₂O₂ detection capability of P-AgNPs-100 was comparable to that of a commercial strip sensor. Furthermore, P-AgNPs-100 had a detection efficiency of more than 95% after long-term storage for 100 days.

Mechanochemically Scaled-Up Alpha Cyclodextrin Nanosponges: Their Safety and Effectiveness as Ethylene Scavenger

Aiming at the development of a greener ethylene removal alternative, the goal of this study was to scale up and ensure the safety of α-cyclodextrin nanosponges (α-CD-NS) for further use as ethylene scavengers. The solvent-free synthesis of α-CD-NS was successfully scaled up using α-cyclodextrin and N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole as cross-linkers (1:4 molar ratio) by means of mechanical alloying using a PM 100 ball mill by focusing on varying the rotation frequency, as determined by FTIR-ATR, X-ray diffraction, and TGA. α-CD-NS washing optimization was performed in water by monitoring the imidazole concentration in the washing solution through the validation of a fast and sensitive HPLC-DAD method. After 6 h at 40 °C, all imidazole was extracted, allowing a faster and less energy-dependent extraction. α-CD-NS absorbent capacity and porosity were also evaluated through BET isotherms and ethylene absorption experiments using α-CD-NS and commercially available absorbents (zeolite and bentonite) were performed by means of gas chromatography (GC) coupled to a flame ionization detector (FID). With a 93 µL h^-1 kg_adsorbent^-1 ethylene removal capacity, α-CD-NS revealed the best ethylene scavenging activity when compared to the other absorbents, opening the doors for a safer, innovative, and eco-friendlier ethylene removal active packaging.

Supramolecular nanogels based on gelatin-cyclodextrin-stabilized silver nanocomposites with antibacterial and anticancer properties

An effective method for reducing silver ions using gelatin (Gel) and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) hydrogels, which stabilize silver at various concentrations is described. The formation of AgNPs in solution, as well as Gel-HPCD nanogels, is confirmed by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 420-440 nm in the UV-Vis spectrum. The resulting Gel-HPCD and Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composites are characterized using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). SEM images showed that the porous structure and the AgNPs are homogeneously dispersed throughout the Gel-HPCD/AgNP composites network. The AgNPs in the Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composite is crystalline, with spherical particles having an average size of 7.0 ± 2.5 nm, as determined by TEM. The Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composites are strongly effective against both gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The assembled antibacterial Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composites are also assessed for their cytotoxic and anticancer activities using HCT-116 cancer cells. The results suggest that Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composites could be used as effective therapeutics in the future in tissue engineering applications, as their bactericidal properties and low toxicity make them ideal for clinical use.

Folic Acid-Decorated β-Cyclodextrin-Based Poly(ε-caprolactone)-dextran Star Polymer with Disulfide Bond-Linker as Theranostic Nanoparticle for Tumor-Targeted MRI and Chemotherapy

β-cyclodextrin(βCD)-based star polymers have attracted much interest because of their unique structures and potential biomedical and biological applications. Herein, a well-defined folic acid (FA)-conjugated and disulfide bond-linked star polymer ((FA-Dex-SS)-βCD-(PCL)₁₄) was synthesized via a couple reaction between βCD-based 14 arms poly(ε-caprolactone) (βCD-(PCL)₁₄) and disulfide-containing α-alkyne dextran (alkyne-SS-Dex), and acted as theranostic nanoparticles for tumor-targeted MRI and chemotherapy. Theranostic nanoparticles were obtained by loading doxorubicin (DOX), and superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) particles were loaded into the star polymer nanoparticles to obtain ((FA-Dex-SS)-βCD-(PCL)₁₄@DOX-SPIO) theranostic nanoparticles. In vitro drug release studies showed that approximately 100% of the DOX was released from disulfide bond-linked theranostic nanoparticles within 24 h under a reducing environment in the presence of 10.0 mM GSH. DOX and SPIO could be delivered into HepG2 cells efficiently, owing to the folate receptor-mediated endocytosis process of the nanoparticles and glutathione (GSH), which triggered disulfide-bonds cleaving. Moreover, (FA-Dex-SS)-βCD-(PCL)₁₄@DOX-SPIO showed strong MRI contrast enhancement properties. In conclusion, folic acid-decorated reduction-sensitive star polymeric nanoparticles are a potential theranostic nanoparticle candidate for tumor-targeted MRI and chemotherapy.
