Abstract
This manuscript analyses changes in the optical parameters of a commercial alumina nanoporous structure (AnodiscTM or AND support) due to surface coverage by the ionic liquid (IL) AliquatCl (AlqCl). XPS measurements were performed for chemical characterization of the composite AND/AlqCl and the AND support, but XPS resolved angle analysis (from 15° to 75°) was carried out for the homogeneity estimation of the top surface of the ANDAlqCl sample. Optical characterization of both the composite AND/AlqCl and the AND support was performed by three non-destructive and non-invasive techniques: ellipsometry spectroscopy (SE), light transmittance/reflection, and photoluminescence. SE measurements (wavelength ranging from 250 nm to 1250 nm) allow for the determination of the refraction index of the AND/AlqCl sample, which hardly differs from that corresponding to the IL, confirming the XPS results. The presence of the IL significantly increases the light transmission of the alumina support in the visible region and reduces reflection, affecting also the maximum position of this latter curve, as well as the photoluminescence spectra. Due to these results, illuminated I-V curves for both the composite AND/AlqCl film and the AND support were also measured to estimate its possible application as a solar cell. The optical behaviour exhibited by the AND/AlqCl thin film in the visible region could be of interest for different applications.

Abstract
The mid-infrared region (MIR) is crucial for many applications in security and industry, in chemical and biomolecular sensing, since it contains strong characteristic vibrational transitions of many important molecules and gases (e.g. CO2, CH4, CO). Despite its great potential, the optical systems operating in this spectral domain are still under development. The situation is caused mainly by the lack of inexpensive and adequate optical materials which show no absorption in the MIR. In this work, we present an easy and affordable way to develop 1D photonic crystals (PCs) based on porous anodic alumina for MIR region. The porous PCs were produced by the pulse anodization of aluminum using charge-controlled mode. The first order photonic stopbands (λ1) were located within ca. 3.5-6.5μm. Annealing of the material at 1100 °C for an hour has allowed to recover the wavelength range from around 5.8 to 7.5μm owing to the decomposition of the absorption centers (oxalate anions) present in the anodic oxide framework while maintaining the PC structural stability. The spectral position and the shape of the resonances were regulated by the charge passing under high (UH) and low (UL) voltage pulses, porosity of the correspondingdHanddLsegments, and dura tion of the process (ttot). The thickness of thedHanddLlayers was proportional to the charge passing under respective pulses, with the proportionality coefficient increasing with the applied voltage. Despite the constant charge (2500 mC cm-2) applied during the anodization, the thickness of anodic alumina (d) increased with applied voltage (10-60 V) and anodizing temperature (5 °C-30 °C). This behavior was ascribed to the different kinetics of the anodic alumina formation prompted by the variable electrochemical conditions. The photonic material can be used in portable nondispersive gas sensors as an enhancement layer operating up to around 9μm.

Influence of Pore-Size/Porosity on Ion Transport and Static BSA Fouling for TiO2-Covered Nanoporous Alumina Membranes. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2021. Abstract
The influence of geometrical parameters (pore radii and porosity) on ion transport through two almost ideal nanoporous alumina membranes (NPAMs) coated with a thin TiO2 layer by the atomic layer deposition technique (Sf-NPAM/TiO2 and Ox-NPAM/TiO2 samples) was analyzed by membrane potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The results showed the significant effect of pore radii (10 nm for Sf-NPAM/TiO2 and 13 nm for Ox-NPAM/TiO2) when compared with porosity (9% and 6%, respectively). Both electrochemical techniques were also used for estimation of protein (bovine serum albumin or BSA) static fouling, and the results seem to indicate deposition of a BSA layer on the Sf-NPAM/TiO2 fouled membrane surface but pore-wall deposition in the case of the fouled Ox-NPAM/TiO2 sample. Moreover, a typical and simple optical technique such as light transmission/reflection (wavelength ranging between 0 and 2000 nm) was also used for membrane analysis, showing only slight transmittance differences in the visible region when both clean membranes were compared. However, a rather significant transmittance reduction (~18%) was observed for the fouled Sf-NPAM/TiO2 sample compared to the fouled Ox-NPAM/TiO2 sample, and was associated with BSA deposition on the membrane surface, thus supporting the electrochemical analysis results.

Abstract
Three nanoporous alumina structures (NPASs) obtained by the two-step anodization method were optically and electrochemically characterized. Two of the structures were symmetric (NPAS-Sf and NPAS-Ph) and one was asymmetric (NPAS-And); pore size ranged from 10 nm to 100 nm and porosity was 12% in the case of the symmetrical NPAS and 23% and 30% for each surface of the asymmetric structure NPAS-And(A) and (B), respectively. Optical parameters of the studied samples (refraction index and extinction coefficient) were obtained from ellypsometric spectroscopy measurements carried out for wavelengths ranging between 250 nm and 1700 nm (visible and near infrared regions), with the total average refraction indices being 1.54, 1.52, 1.14, and 1.05 for NPAS-Sf, NPAS-Ph, NPAS-And(A), and NPAS-And(B), respectively, which indicates porosity control of refraction index values. Electrochemical characterizations (concentration potential and impedance spectroscopy measurements) were performed with NaCl solutions, and they allowed us to estimate samples of effective fixed charge concentration (1.22 × 10−2 M, 1.13 × 10−3 M, and 1.15 × 10−3 M), ion transport numbers, permselectivity (33.0%, 3.1%, and 9.6%), and the electrical resistance of each solution/sample system as well as the interfacial effects associated to solution concentration–polarization, which seems to be mainly controlled by pore size and sample symmetry.

Abstract
Controlling functional properties of matter and combining them for engineering a functional device is, nowadays, a common direction of the scientific community. For instance, heterogeneous magnetic nanostructures can make use of different types of geometrical and compositional modulations to achieve the control of the magnetization reversal along with the nano-entities and, thus, enable the fabrication of spintronic, magnetic data storage, and sensing devices, among others. In this work, diameter-modulated FeNi nanowires are fabricated paying special effort to obtain sharp transition regions between two segments of different diameters (from about 450 nm to 120 nm), enabling precise control over the magnetic behavior of the sample. Micromagnetic simulations performed on single bi-segmented nanowires predict a double step magnetization reversal where the wide segment magnetization switches near 16 kA/m through a vortex domain wall, while at 40 kA/m the magnetization of the narrow segment is reversed through a corkscrew-like mechanism. Finally, these results are confirmed with magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements at the transition of isolated bi-segmented nanowires. Furthermore, macroscopic vibrating sample magnetometry is used to demonstrate that the magnetic decoupling of nanowire segments is the main phenomenon occurring over the entire fabricated nanowires.

Abstract
The use of nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) for the development of drug delivery systems has gained much attention in recent years. The release of drugs loaded inside NAA pores is complex and depends on the morphology of the pores. In this study, NAA, with different three-dimensional (3D) pore structures (cylindrical pores with several pore diameters, multilayered nanofunnels, and multilayered inverted funnels) were fabricated, and their respective drug delivery rates were studied and modeled using doxorubicin as a model drug. The obtained results reveal optimal modeling of all 3D pore structures, differentiating two drug release stages. Thus, an initial short-term and a sustained long-term release were successfully modeled by the Higuchi and the Korsmeyer-Peppas equations, respectively. This study demonstrates the influence of pore geometries on drug release rates, and further presents a sustained long-term drug release that exceeds 60 days without an undesired initial burst.

Abstract
Synthesis of a nanoporous alumina membrane (NPAM) by the two-step anodization method and its morphological and chemical surface characterization by analyzing Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) spectra is reported. Influence of electrical and diffusive effects on the NaCl transport across the membrane nanopores is determined from salt diffusion measurements performed with a wide range of NaCl concentrations, which allows the estimation of characteristic electrochemical membrane parameters such as the NaCl diffusion coefficient and the concentration of fixed charges in the membrane, by using an appropriated model and the membrane geometrical parameters (porosity and pore length). These results indicate a reduction of ~70% in the value of the NaCl diffusion coefficient through the membrane pores with respect to solution. The transport number of ions in the membrane pores (Na⁺ and Cl-, respectively) were determined from concentration potential measurements, and the effect of concentration-polarization at the membrane surfaces was also considered by comparing concentration potential values obtained with stirred solutions (550 rpm) and without stirring. From both kinds of results, a value higher than 0.05 M NaCl for the feed solution seems to be necessary to neglect the contribution of electrical interactions in the diffusive transport.
