The Application of Gas Dwell Time Control for Rapid Single Wall Carbon Nanotube Forest Synthesis to Acetylene Feedstock

Surface Area Enhancement of Nanomechanical Disk Resonators Using MWCNT for Mass-Sensing Applications

This work presents fabrication of thermal-piezoresistive nanoelectromechanical silicon disk resonators and their characterization as highly sensitive mass sensors. Forest of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been grown on the top surface of the fabricated devices, increasing the resonator effective surface area, which, in turn, increases the adsorption capacity and, therefore, the frequency shift of the sensor in molecular or particulate detection applications. To investigate the effect of the enhanced surface area on frequency shift, devices with and without MWCNTs were exposed to an aqueous solution of manganese sulfate for different deposition times and the resonance frequency shift was recorded accordingly. The measured frequency shift for the devices covered with MWCNTs was 14× higher than similar bare silicon devices. Furthermore, mass loading experiments were performed using gold nanoparticles as the loading mass. A novel way to attach gold nanoparticles on the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) wall was developed here. Oxygen plasma treatment introduced dangling bonds on the MWCNTs walls to facilitate the bonding between them and trimethoxysilane aldehyde molecules, forming the self-assembled monolayer (SAM). After functionalization of the device with SAM and antiinfluenza H1N1 viruses (AB), the device was exposed to a solution of Antimouse IgG (whole molecule)-gold antibody produced in goat products. The results showed more than three times response enhancement for the resonators with MWCNTs.

One millimeter per minute growth rates for single wall carbon nanotube forests enabled by porous metal substrates

We report an exceptionally high-efficiency synthesis of long single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) forests using porous substrates (metal meshes) in place of nonporous flat substrates. This study examined the dependence of the growth efficiency on various mesh structures, including wire diameter, aperture size, and total surface area. We demonstrated that the synthesis of SWCNT forests is highly dependent on the initial porosity as well as maintaining the open pores throughout the duration of the growth. Our results show that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be grown on all surfaces of the mesh in high efficiency with the optimum growth efficiency observed for a mesh porosity of ∼30%. Based on these results, we demonstrated the high efficiency synthesis of SWCNT forests (height: >3.47 mm, average growth rate: 301 μm min⁻¹, and yield: 12.7 mg cm⁻² in 10 min growth time). Furthermore, we showed that the initial growth rates exceeded 1 millimeter per minute (1000 μm min⁻¹). Our results further indicate that metal meshes represent a viable alternative to nonporous flat substrates for the efficient synthesis of tall and high yielding SWCNTs.

Antithyroid Drug Therapy for Graves' Disease and Implications for Recurrence

Graves' disease (GD) is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism worldwide. Current therapeutic options for GD include antithyroid drugs (ATD), radioactive iodine, and thyroidectomy. ATD treatment is generally well accepted by patients and clinicians due to some advantages including normalizing thyroid function in a short time, hardly causing hypothyroidism, and ameliorating immune disorder while avoiding radiation exposure and invasive procedures. However, the relatively high recurrence rate is a major concern for ATD treatment, which is associated with multiple influencing factors like clinical characteristics, treatment strategies, and genetic and environmental factors. Of these influencing factors, some are modifiable but some are nonmodifiable. The recurrence risk can be reduced by adjusting the modifiable factors as much as possible. The titration regimen for 12-18 months is the optimal strategy of ATD. Levothyroxine administration after successful ATD treatment was not recommended. The addition of immunosuppressive drugs might be helpful to decrease the recurrence rate of GD patients after ATD withdrawal, whereas further studies are needed to address the safety and efficacy. This paper reviewed the current knowledge of ATD treatment and mainly focused on influencing factors for recurrence in GD patients with ATD treatment.

Effects of Thickness and Amount of Carbon Nanofiber Coated Carbon Fiber on Improving the Mechanical Properties of Nanocomposites

In the current study, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were grown on a carbon fiber (CF) surface by using the chemical vapor deposition method (CVD) and the influences of some parameters of the CVD method on improving the mechanical properties of a polypropylene (PP) composite were investigated. To obtain an optimum surface area, thickness, and yield of the CNFs, the parameters of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, such as catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time, and hydrocarbon flow rate, were optimized. It was observed that the optimal surface area, thickness, and yield of the CNFs caused more adhesion of the fibers with the PP matrix, which enhanced the composite properties. Besides this, the effectiveness of reinforcement of fillers was fitted with a mathematical model obtaining good agreement between the experimental result and the theoretical prediction. By applying scanning electronic microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy, the surface morphology and structural information of the resultant CF-CNF were analyzed. Additionally, SEM images and a mechanical test of the composite with a proper layer of CNFs on the CF revealed not only a compactness effect but also the thickness and surface area roles of the CNF layers in improving the mechanical properties of the composites.
