Large-Scale Formation of a Close-Packed Monolayer of Spheres Using Different Colloidal Lithography Techniques

The possibility of using colloidal lithography at the industrial level depends on the ability to form defect-free coatings over large areas. The spin-coating method has not yet shown acceptable results, but a more detailed studying of the regularities of this process may improve the quality of masks. The Langmuir-Blodgett method is expected to be the most preferable for forming high-quality large-scale monolayers. Real-time controlling the surface pressure of the monolayer can allow to obtain close-packed arrays with long-range order. In this work, to develop the spin-coating technology, the influence of technological parameters (spin-coating speed and time, concentrations of components in suspension) on the substrate coverage area with a monolayer of polystyrene spheres (1.25 μm) was studied. An original automated Langmuir-Blodgett system was developed to study the influence of the monolayer surface pressure on its quality using polystyrene spheres (1.25, 1.8, 2.1 μm). The developed spin-coating technology resulted in a record coverage area (90%) of Si substrate (76 mm) and a defect-free hexagonally ordered domain area of 500 μm2. As a result of the developed Langmuir-Blodgett technique, a close-packed monolayer coating was obtained over the entire substrate area (coverage area 99.5%, defect-free domain area 3000 μm2) without the use of any surfactants.

An ultra-sensitive and rapid immunosensor for the onsite detection of circulating tumor DNA in breast cancer

Breast cancer currently stands as the most prevalent form of cancer worldwide and the primary cause of cancer-related deaths among women. However, the current diagnostic methods for breast cancer exhibit several limitations, including invasiveness, high costs, and limited sensitivity and specificity. The detection of the PIK3CA-H1047R variant is of paramount importance due to its close association with tumor growth and treatment resistance. Consequently, developing a straightforward, rapid, and highly sensitive approach for detecting PIK3CA-H1047R is of utmost importance. We have been working on the development of a rapid and ultrasensitive biosensor, leveraging the alternating current (AC) electrokinetic (ACEK) capacitive sensing method. This biosensor involves modifying the surface of interdigital electrodes with antibodies, facilitating the antibody-antigen-binding process through AC electrokinetic techniques. Our sensor strategy directly measures the interface capacitance, and the rate of change serves as a quantitative marker for event identification. Remarkably, our biosensor successfully detects the PIK3CA-H1047R antigen within a concentration range of 1 ng/mL to 1 μg/mL. In conclusion, this study proposes a fast and highly sensitive biosensor for the detection of a key breast cancer marker, the PIK3CA-H1047R variant. This technology is expected to improve breast cancer diagnosis, address the limitations of current methods, and provide patients with better treatment options. This detection method offers a promising avenue for on-site and real-time sensitive detection of the PIK3CA-H1047R antigen, potentially revolutionizing breast cancer diagnosis.

Transparent anti-fingerprint glass surfaces: comprehensive insights into theory, design, and prospects

With the advancement of information technology, touch-operated devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers have become ubiquitous, reshaping our interaction with technology. Transparent surfaces, pivotal in the display industry, architecture, and household appliances, are prone to contamination from fingerprints, grease, and dust. Such contaminants compromise the cleanliness, aesthetic appeal, hygiene of the glass, and the overall user visual experience. As a result, fingerprint prevention has gained prominence in related research domains. Nanoparticle Assembly: From Self-Organization to Controlled Micropatterning for Enhanced Functionalities

Nanoparticles form long-range micropatterns via self-assembly or directed self-assembly with superior mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic, chemical, and other functional properties for broad applications, such as structural supports, thermal exchangers, optoelectronics, microelectronics, and robotics. The precisely defined particle assembly at the nanoscale with simultaneously scalable patterning at the microscale is indispensable for enabling functionality and improving the performance of devices. This article provides a comprehensive review of nanoparticle assembly formed primarily via the balance of forces at the nanoscale (e.g., van der Waals, colloidal, capillary, convection, and chemical forces) and nanoparticle-template interactions (e.g., physical confinement, chemical functionalization, additive layer-upon-layer). The review commences with a general overview of nanoparticle self-assembly, with the state-of-the-art literature review and motivation. It subsequently reviews the recent progress in nanoparticle assembly without the presence of surface templates. Manufacturing techniques for surface template fabrication and their influence on nanoparticle assembly efficiency and effectiveness are then explored. The primary focus is the spatial organization and orientational preference of nanoparticles on non-templated and pre-templated surfaces in a controlled manner. Moreover, the article discusses broad applications of micropatterned surfaces, encompassing various fields. Finally, the review concludes with a summary of manufacturing methods, their limitations, and future trends in nanoparticle assembly.

Patterned Nanoparticle Arrays Fabricated Using Liquid Film Rupture Self-Assembly

Self-assembly is an important bottom-up fabrication approach based on accurate manipulation of solid-air-liquid interfaces to construct microscale structures using nanoscale materials. This approach plays a substantial role in the fabrication of microsensors, nanosensors, and actuators. Improving the controllability of self-assembly to realize large-scale regular micro/nano patterns is crucial for this approach's further development and wider applications. Herein, we propose a novel strategy for patterning nanoparticle arrays on soft substrates. This strategy is based on a unique process of liquid film rupture self-assembly that is convenient, precise, and cost-efficient for mass manufacturing. This approach involves two key steps. First, suspended liquid films comprising monolayer polystyrene (PS) spheres are realized via liquid-air interface self-assembly over prepatterned microstructures. Second, these suspended liquid films are ruptured in a controlled manner to induce the self-assembly of internal PS spheres around the morphological edges of the underlying microstructures. This nanoparticle array patterning method is comprehensively investigated in terms of the effect of the PS sphere size, morphological effect of the microstructured substrate, key factors influencing liquid film-rupture self-assembly, and optical transmittance of the fabricated samples. A maximum rupture rate of 95.4% was achieved with an optimized geometric and dimensional design. Compared with other nanoparticle-based self-assembly methods used to form patterned arrays, the proposed approach reduces the waste of nanoparticles substantially because all nanoparticles self-assemble around the prepatterned microstructures. More nanoparticles assemble to form prepatterned arrays, which could strengthen the nanoparticle array network without affecting the initial features of prepatterned microstructures.

Visible and infrared dual-band anti-counterfeiting with self-assembled photonic heterostructures

Self-assembled photonic structures have greatly expanded the paradigm of optical materials due to their ease of access, the richness of results offered and the strong interaction with light. Among them, photonic heterostructure shows unprecedent advances in exploring novel optical responses that only can be realized by interfaces or multiple components. In this work, we realize visible and infrared dual-band anti-counterfeiting using metamaterial (MM) - photonic crystal (PhC) heterostructures for the first time. Sedimentation of TiO₂ nanoparticles in horizontal mode and polystyrene (PS) microspheres in vertical mode self-assembles a van der Waals interface, connecting TiO₂ MM to PS PhC. Difference of characteristic length scales between two components support photonic bandgap engineering in the visible band, and creates a concrete interface at mid-infrared to prevent interference. Consequently, the encoded TiO₂ MM is hidden by structurally colored PS PhC and visualized either by adding refractive index matching liquid or by thermal imaging. The well-defined compatibility of optical modes and facility in interface treatments further paves the way for multifunctional photonic heterostructures.

Nanosphere Lithography-Based Fabrication of Spherical Nanostructures and Verification of Their Hexagonal Symmetries by Image Analysis

Nanosphere lithography (NSL) is a cost- and time-effective technique for the fabrication of well-ordered large-area arrays of nanostructures. This paper reviews technological challenges in NSL mask preparation, its modification, and quality control. Spin coating with various process parameters (substrate wettability, solution properties, spin coating operating parameters) are discussed to create a uniform monolayer from monodisperse polystyrene (PS) nanospheres with a diameter of 0.2–1.5 μm. Scanning electron microscopy images show that the PS nanospheres are ordered into a hexagonal close-packed monolayer. Verification of sphere ordering and symmetry is obtained using our open-source software HEXI, which can recognize and detect circles, and distinguish between hexagonal ordering and defect configurations. The created template is used to obtain a wide variety of tailor-made periodic structures by applying additional treatments, such as plasma etching (isotropic and anisotropic), deposition, evaporation, and lift-off. The prepared highly ordered nanopatterned arrays (from circular, triangular, pillar-shaped structures) are applicable in many different fields (plasmonics, photonics, sensorics, biomimetic surfaces, life science, etc.).

Recent advances in focused ion beam nanofabrication for nanostructures and devices: fundamentals and applications

The past few decades have witnessed growing research interest in developing powerful nanofabrication technologies for three-dimensional (3D) structures and devices to achieve nano-scale and nano-precision manufacturing. Among the various fabrication techniques, focused ion beam (FIB) nanofabrication has been established as a well-suited and promising technique in nearly all fields of nanotechnology for the fabrication of 3D nanostructures and devices because of increasing demands from industry and research. In this article, a series of FIB nanofabrication factors related to the fabrication of 3D nanostructures and devices, including mechanisms, instruments, processes, and typical applications of FIB nanofabrication, are systematically summarized and analyzed in detail. Additionally, current challenges and future development trends of FIB nanofabrication in this field are also given. This work intends to provide guidance for practitioners, researchers, or engineers who wish to learn more about the FIB nanofabrication technology that is driving the revolution in 3D nanostructures and devices.

Convex-Meniscus-Assisted Self-Assembly at the Air/Water Interface to Prepare a Wafer-Scale Colloidal Monolayer Without Overlap

Self-assembly at the air/water interface (AWI) has proven to be an efficient strategy for fabricating two-dimensional (2D) colloidal monolayers, which was widely used as the template for nanosphere lithography in nanophononics, optofluidics, and solar cell studies. However, the monolayers fabricated at the AWI usually suffer from a small domain area and quasi-double layer structure caused by submerged particles. To overcome this, we proposed an improved protocol to prepare 2D colloidal monolayers free of overlapping nanospheres at the AWI. Utilizing the stable suspension infusion to the water surface, a convex meniscus, whose height is related to viscous force, was formed adjoining the three-phase boundary. As a result of the resistance of the convex meniscus, the polystyrene nanospheres in the initial suspension directly self-assembled into a preliminary monolayer, which proved effective in preventing nanospheres' sinking and increasing the colloidal crystal domain size. An optimal parameter for transferring the monolayer was also developed based on the numerical simulation results. Finally, a wafer-scale monolayer, covered with less than one nanosphere per 100 μm × 100 μm area, was achieved on the desired substrate with an average domain size attaining centimeter scale. The high-quality 2D colloidal crystal may further promote the application of nanosphere lithography, especially in the fields that require a defect-free template.

Formation of Free-Standing Inverse Opals with Gradient Pores

We demonstrate the fabrication of free-standing inverse opals with gradient pores via a combination of electrophoresis and electroplating techniques. Our processing scheme starts with the preparation of multilayer colloidal crystals by conducting sequential electrophoresis with polystyrene (PS) microspheres in different sizes (300, 600, and 1000 nm). The critical factors affecting the stacking of individual colloidal crystals are discussed and relevant electrophoresis parameters are identified so the larger PS microspheres are assembled successively atop of smaller ones in an orderly manner. In total, we construct multilayer colloidal crystals with vertical stacking of microspheres in 300/600, 300/1000, and 300/600/1000 nm sequences. The inverse opals with gradient pores are produced by galvanostatic plating of Ni, followed by the selective removal of colloidal template. Images from scanning electron microscopy exhibit ideal multilayer close-packed structures with well-defined boundaries among different layers. Results from porometer analysis reveal the size of bottlenecks consistent with those of interconnected pore channels from inverse opals of smallest PS microspheres. Mechanical properties determined by nanoindentation tests indicate significant improvements for multilayer inverse opals as compared to those of conventional single-layer inverse opals.

Green Synthesis of Ni@PEDOT and Ni@PEDOT/Au (Core@Shell) Inverse Opals for Simultaneous Detection of Ascorbic Acid, Dopamine, and Uric Acid

We demonstrate a water-based synthetic route to fabricate composite inverse opals for simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA). Our process involves the conformal deposition of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and PEDOT/Au on the skeletons of Ni inverse opals via cyclic voltammetric scans (CV) to initiate the electropolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomers. The resulting samples, Ni@PEDOT, and Ni@PEDOT/Au inverse opals, exhibit a three-dimensional ordered macroporous platform with a large surface area and interconnected pore channels, desirable attributes for facile mass transfer and strong reaction for analytes. Structural characterization and material/chemical analysis including scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy are carried out. The sensing performances of Ni@PEDOT and Ni@PEDOT/Au inverse opals are explored by conducting CV scans with various concentrations of AA, DA, and UA. By leveraging the structural advantages of inverse opals and the selection of PEDOT/Au composite, the Ni@PEDOT/Au inverse opals reveal improved sensing performances over those of conventional PEDOT-based nanostructured sensors.

Anti-Reflective Coating Materials: A Holistic Review from PV Perspective

The solar photovoltaic (PV) cell is a prominent energy harvesting device that reduces the strain in the conventional energy generation approach and endorses the prospectiveness of renewable energy. Thus, the exploration in this ever-green field is worth the effort. From the power conversion efficiency standpoint of view, PVs are consistently improving, and when analyzing the potential areas that can be advanced, more and more exciting challenges are encountered. One such crucial challenge is to increase the photon availability for PV conversion. This challenge is solved using two ways. First, by suppressing the reflection at the interface of the solar cell, and the other way is to enhance the optical pathlength inside the cell for adequate absorption of the photons. Our review addresses this challenge by emphasizing the various strategies that aid in trapping the light in the solar cells. These strategies include the usage of antireflection coatings (ARCs) and light-trapping structures. The primary focus of this study is to review the ARCs from a PV application perspective based on various materials, and it highlights the development of ARCs from more than the past three decades covering the structure, fabrication techniques, optical performance, features, and research potential of ARCs reported. More importantly, various ARCs researched with different classes of PV cells, and their impact on its efficiency is given a special attention. To enhance the optical pathlength, and thus the absorption in solar PV devices, an insight about the advanced light-trapping techniques that deals with the concept of plasmonics, spectral modification, and other prevailing innovative light-trapping structures approaching the Yablonovitch limit is discussed. An extensive collection of information is presented as tables under each core review section. Further, we take a step forward to brief the effects of ageing on ARCs and their influence on the device performance. Finally, we summarize the review of ARCs on the basis of structures, materials, optical performance, multifunctionality, stability, and cost-effectiveness along with a master table comparing the selected high-performance ARCs with perfect AR coatings. Also, from the discussed significant challenges faced by ARCs and future outlook; this work directs the researchers to identify the area of expertise where further research analysis is needed in near future.

Mono-Dispersed Microspheres Locally Assembled on Porous Substrates Formed through a Microemulsion Approach

A cost-effective, simple, and time-saving method to fabricate mono-dispersed periodic microsphere structures on substrates with patterned sites is very meaningful due to their significance on various biological studies. Herein, a simple and facile method to fabricate mono-dispersed microsphere arrays on porous substrates was developed. The mixture of polystyrene and an organic stabilizer solution which contains aqueous solution, fabricated through shaking, was applied to prepare microemulsion solution. An ordered porous structure was produced by spreading and evaporating the solvent of microemulsion on a glass slide, accompanied by the enrichment of didodecylamine in the cavities. The porous cavities were further modified with polyacrylic acid and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) which could immobilize the microspheres. The charged microspheres were incorporated into the cavities by an electrostatic interaction with the oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. The positive polyelectrolytes with abundant charges as well as a suitable content and dimension of microspheres, ensured the formation of mono-dispersed and ordered arrays. Considering that other charged particles were universally suitable for the present strategy, the reported approach opened an efficient way for the preparation of microsphere-based materials.

Fabrication of Bioactive Inverted Colloidal Crystal Scaffolds Using Expanded Polystyrene Beads

Inverted colloidal crystal (ICC) hydrogel scaffolds have emerged as a new class of three-dimensional cell culture matrix that represents a unique opportunity to reproduce lymphoid tissue microenvironments. ICC geometry promotes the formation of stromal cell networks and their interaction with hematopoietic cells, a core cellular process in lymphoid tissues. When subdermally implanted, ICC hydrogel scaffolds direct unique foreign body responses to form a vascularized stromal tissue with prolonged attraction of hematopoietic cells, which together resemble lymphoid tissue microenvironments. While conceptually simple, fabrication of ICC hydrogel scaffold requires multiple steps and laborious handling of delicate materials. Here, we introduce a facile route for ICC hydrogel scaffold fabrication using expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads. EPS beads shrink and fuse in a tunable manner under pressurized thermal conditions, which serves as colloidal crystal templates for ICC scaffold fabrication. Inclusion of collagen in the precursor solution greatly simplified preparation of bioactive hydrogel scaffolds. The resultant EPS-templated bioactive ICC hydrogel scaffolds demonstrate characteristic features required for lymphoid tissue modeling in both in vitro and in vivo settings. We envision that the presented method will facilitate widespread implementation of ICC hydrogel scaffolds for lymphoid tissue engineering and other emerging applications. We envision that EPS bead-based hydrogel scaffold fabrication will greatly facilitate the widespread implementation of ICC hydrogel scaffolds and their practical applications.

Nanosphere Lithography for Structuring Polycrystalline Diamond Films

This paper deals with the structuring of polycrystalline diamond thin films using the technique of nanosphere lithography. The presented multistep approaches relied on a spin-coated self-assembled monolayer of polystyrene spheres, which served as a lithographic mask for the further custom nanofabrication steps. Various arrays of diamond nanostructures—close-packed and non-close-packed monolayers over substrates with various levels of surface roughness, noble metal films over nanosphere arrays, ordered arrays of holes, and unordered pores—were created using reactive ion etching, chemical vapour deposition, metallization, and/or lift-off processes. The size and shape of the lithographic mask was altered using oxygen plasma etching. The periodicity of the final structure was defined by the initial diameter of the spheres. The surface morphology of the samples was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. The advantages and limitations of the fabrication technique are discussed. Finally, the potential applications (e.g., photonics, plasmonics) of the obtained nanostructures are reviewed.

Uniform two-dimensional crystals of polystyrene nanospheres fabricated by a surfactant-assisted spin-coating method with polyoxyethylene tridecyl ether

Spin-coated self-assemblies of colloidal particles have been developed recently as an attractive close-packed monolayer of the particles for a variety of applications, but they are limited by the small area of their monolayers, especially given their low uniformity and monolayer coverage on large-area substrates. We report several noteworthy characteristics of a close-packed monolayer of polystyrene nanospheres (PS NSs) fabricated using a simple and inexpensive spin-coating method with a PS NS suspension mixed using the nonionic surfactant polyoxyethylene (12) tridecyl ether (PEO-TDE). In our study, we show that the PEO-TDE surfactant offers excellent wettability, surface tension, and a slow solvent evaporation rate of the PS NS suspension, similar to the conventional surfactant Triton X-100. We demonstrate that the relatively high monolayer coverage with reduced defects is produced when introducing the PEO-TDE surfactant. Specifically, monolayer coverage of more than 95% on a Si substrate was achieved, which is much better than that with the typical Triton X-100, and is one of the highest coverage rates realized by a spin-coating method. This excellent uniformity of the PS NS monolayer with high monolayer coverage is mainly attributed to the relatively low viscosity of the PS NS suspension, even at high concentrations of PEO-TDE. Moreover, the PEO-TDE surfactant provides highly uniform monolayers on a large-scale glass substrate even for large-sized PS NSs. We also highlight the fact that the PEO-TDE surfactant has another advantage in that the spin-coating process of the PS NS suspension can be done under common ambient laboratory conditions, unlike those required for the highly toxic Triton X-100. We therefore conclude that PEO-TDE can be a useful surfactant during the fabrication of close-packed monolayers for various applications owing to its simple and straightforward control of PS NSs, its uniform and high surface coverage, and due to the safety of the fabrication process.
