Self-Assembled AgNP-Containing Nanocomposites Constructed by Electrospinning as Efficient Dye Photocatalyst Materials for Wastewater Treatment

Preparation and characterization of acetate cellulose electrospun nanofibers membrane: Potential application on wastewater treatment

Development of nanofiber membranes with the ability to remove organic dye such as Indigo Carmine (IC) from effluent wastewater is of immense help to the textile industry. In the present study, we investigate the preparation of cellulose acetate (CA) nanofiber membranes with optimized performances using electrospinning technique for effective removal of Indigo Carmine (IC) dye. Electrospinning parameters and solvent system containing acetic acid were adjusted to obtain CA nanofibers membranes which better suits dye removal application. The obtained nanofiber membranes were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and contact angle analysis. Results show that nanofiber webs with optimized electrospinning parameters were continuously formed and are substantially free of defects such as beading, with an average diameter of 950 ± 50 nm. Hydrophobicity of membranes were successfully modified and showed important increase of contact angle values from 37° to 107°. The stirring time was varied to improve the solution homogeneity and consequently the response of membranes in filtration treatment. The CA membranes performance was evaluated through water flux and permeability measurement and tested on IC dye removal. The results showed a rate of dye removal around 83 % and a maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 13.09 mg/g for the optimized CA membranes.

A Pressure and Proximity Sensor Based on Laser-Induced Graphene

Smart wearable devices are extensively utilized across diverse domains due to their inherent advantages of flexibility, portability, and real-time monitoring. Among these, flexible sensors demonstrate exceptional pliability and malleability, making them a prominent focus in wearable electronics research. However, the implementation of flexible wearable sensors often entails intricate and time-consuming processes, leading to high costs, which hinder the advancement of the entire field. Here, we report a pressure and proximity sensor based on oxidized laser-induced graphene (oxidized LIG) as a dielectric layer sandwiched by patterned LIG electrodes, which is characterized by high speed and cost-effectiveness. It is found that in the low-frequency range of fewer than 0.1 kHz, the relative dielectric constant of the oxidized LIG layer reaches an order of magnitude of 104. The pressure mode of this bimodal capacitive sensor is capable of detecting pressures within the range of 1.34 Pa to 800 Pa, with a response time of several hundred milliseconds. The proximity mode involves the application of stimulation using an acrylic probe, which demonstrates a detection range from 0.05 mm to 37.8 mm. Additionally, it has a rapid response time of approximately 100 ms, ensuring consistent signal variations throughout both the approach and withdrawal phases. The sensor fabrication method proposed in this project effectively minimizes expenses and accelerates the preparation cycle through precise control of laser processing parameters to shape the electrode-dielectric layer-electrode within a single substrate material. Based on their exceptional combined performance, our pressure and proximity sensors exhibit significant potential in practical applications such as motion monitoring and distance detection.

The Characterization and Study of Antibacterial, Free Radical Scavenging, and Anticancer Potential of Livistona chinensis-Mediated Silver Nanoparticles

In the present research, Livistona chinensis leaf extracts were utilized as reductants to bio-fabricate silver nanoparticles (LC-AgNPs) and this was followed by the evaluation of their antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer potential. Multiple parameters were optimized for the formation and fidelity of LC-AgNPs. The color shift of the reaction mixture from yellow to dark brown confirmed the LC-AgNPs formation. UV/VIS spectroscopy exhibited a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 436 nm. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy spectrum depicted phytochemicals in the plant extract acting as bio-reducers for LC-AgNPs synthesis. The XRD pattern confirmed the presence of LC-AgNPs by showing peaks corresponding to 2θ angle at 8.24° (111), 38.16° (200), 44.20° (220), and 64.72° (311). Zetasizer analysis exhibited size distribution by intensity of LC-AgNPs with a mean value of 255.7 d. nm. Moreover, the zeta potential indicated that the AgNPs synthesized were stable. The irregular shape of LC-AgNPs with a mean average of 38.46 ± 0.26 nm was found by scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the antioxidant potential of LC-AgNPs was examined using a DPPH assay and was calculated to be higher in LC-AgNPs than in leaf extracts. The calculated IC50 values of the LC-AgNPs and plant extract are 85.01 ± 0.17 and 209.44 ± 0.24, respectively. The antibacterial activity of LC-AgNPs was investigated against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis as well as Staphylococcus aureus, and maximum potential was observed after 24 h against P. aeruginosa. Moreover, LC-AgNPs exhibited maximum anticancer potential against TPC1 cell lines compared to the plant extract. The findings suggested that LC-AgNPs could be used as antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer agents for the cure of free-radical-oriented bacterial and oncogenic diseases.

Reproducibility and long-term stability of Sn doped MnO2 nanostructures: Practical photocatalytic systems and wastewater treatment applications

Sn-doped MnO₂ were synthesized as an oxidant, a mediator of maleic acid (C₄H₄O₄) and SnCl₂ as doping ingredient via a basic sol-gel reaction with KMnO₄. XRD study signposts that tetragonal crystal structure of MnO₂ (ICDD#44-0141) with a plane group of 12/m (87) for both pure and Sn doped MnO₂ nanostructures. The photocatalyst synthesized has mesoporosity, allowing to the N₂ adsorption/desorption experiments. The geometry of the materials varies from spherical shape in pristine MnO₂ to a rod-like shape in Sn-MnO₂, as observed in the SEM and TEM pictures. To examine optic properties and energy bandgaps topologies, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was applied. In visible spectrum, overall catalytic performance of Sn-doped MnO₂ was tested using methyl orange and phenol as dyes. The results suggest that the optimized Sn doped MnO₂ (10 wt.%) catalyst showed higher degradation efficiency (98.5%), apparent constant (0.7841 min^-1) and long term permanence. For this improved charge extraction efficiency, a potential photocatalytic mechanism was proposed.

Self-Assembled Nanocomposites and Nanostructures for Environmental and Energy Applications

Self-assembled nanocomposites are attracting considerable attention owing to their controllable architectures and self-assembly processes, as well as the increase in worldwide environmental effects and energy needs. Further understanding of the self-assembly procedure for improving environmental and energy applications would advance the design and manufacture of nanomaterials for various applications. These materials can be grouped into major categories for various application fields, including powder photocatalysts, membrane photocatalysts, and thin-film thermoelectric nanomaterials. These self-assembled nanomaterials can be used for environmental and energy applications, such as wastewater purification, hydrogen production by water splitting, energy storage, and energy harvesting. In this review, a brief introduction to the definitions and classifications of self-assembled nanocomposites is provided. We aim to provide a summary of the recent research related to self-assembled nanocomposites and nanostructures used for environmental and energy applications. Moreover, typical examples and discussions are aimed at demonstrating the advantages of self-assembled nanostructures. At the end of each section, the structural properties and the application of the nanocomposite or nanostructure are summarized. Finally, we provide perspectives for future research on the design and fabrication of self-assembled nanocomposites and nanostructures.

A comprehensive review on electrospun nanohybrid membranes for wastewater treatment

Electrospinning, being a versatile and straightforward method to produce nanofiber membranes, has shown significant advancement in recent years. On account of the unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity, mechanical strength, and controllable surface morphologies, electrospun nanofiber membranes have been found to have a great potential in many disciplines. Pure electrospun fiber mats modified with different techniques of surface modification and additive incorporation have exhibited enhanced properties compared to traditional membranes and are even better than the as-prepared electrospun membranes. In this review, we have summarized recently developed electrospun nanohybrids fabricated by the incorporation of functional specific nanosized additives to be used in various water remediation membrane techniques. The adsorption, filtration, photocatalytic, and bactericidal capabilities of the hybrid membranes in removing common major water pollutants such as metal ions, dyes, oils, and biological pollutants have been discussed. Finally, an outlook on the future research pathways to fill the gaps existing in water remediation have been suggested.

Coupling Adsorption-Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Maxilon Red

The MB and MR removal process by two mechanisms of adsorption using rice straw (absence of UV light) and photodegradation on TiO₂ surfaces was investigated. MB and MR removal efficiency were further intensified upon the sequential operation of adsorption followed by photocatalytic degradation over TiO₂ under visible light irradiation. The TiO₂ was used to remove methylene blue (MB) and Maxilon Red (MR) dye from aqueous media by continuous mode at 25 ± 2 °C, at pH 6.8 ± 0.2. Photo-illumination study revealed 75.81 and 65.51% MB and MR removal with the dose of 1 g/L TiO₂ with an initial concentration of 5 mg/L within 120 min. This study can be deemed of potential applications for the removal of MB and MR dyes on an industrial level using the synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic oxidation approach. A probable photodegradation mechanism was proposed.

Research progress, models and simulation of electrospinning technology: a review

In recent years, nanomaterials have aroused extensive research interest in the world's material science community. Electrospinning has the advantages of wide range of available raw materials, simple process, small fiber diameter and high porosity. Electrospinning as a nanomaterial preparation technology with obvious advantages has been studied, such as its influencing parameters, physical models and computer simulation. In this review, the influencing parameters, simulation and models of electrospinning technology are summarized. In addition, the progresses in applications of the technology in biomedicine, energy and catalysis are reported. This technology has many applications in many fields, such as electrospun polymers in various aspects of biomedical engineering. The latest achievements in recent years are summarized, and the existing problems and development trends are analyzed and discussed.

Synthesis and Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Prepared with Carrasquilla Fruit Extract (Berberis hallii) and Evaluation of Its Photocatalytic Activity

In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were obtained using a green-chemistry procedure. For this protocol, the Carrasquilla extract (CE) (Berberis hallii) and a AgNO3 solution were used as the reducing agent and the metal precursor, respectively. The as-prepared AgNPs after characterization were then used to evaluate the degradation of the methylene blue (MB), the safranin (SF), and the mixture of both dyes in the aqueous phase under solar light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of AgNPs for the degradation of the MB (k = 0.0092 min−1) was higher than the SF (k = 0.00016 min−1) due to the susceptibility of the thiazine ring of the MB to photodegradation contrasted to the phenyl phenazine of the SF. However, SF was mostly removed by adsorption with a maximum uptake of 2907 mg/g. Overall, this eco-friendly and green conversion of silver ions to metallic elements avoids the use of toxic chemicals and could be applied for the degradation/adsorption of dyes used in several industrial processes.

Bio-mimetic synthesis of catalytically active nano-silver using Bos taurus (A-2) urine

Herein we have synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using liquid metabolic waste of Bos taurus (A-2 type) urine. Various bio-molecules present in cow urine, are effectively used to reduce silver (Ag) ions into silver nanoparticles in one step. This is bio-inspired electron transfer to Ag ion for the formation of base Ag metal and is fairly prompt and facile. These nanoparticles act as a positive catalyst for various organic transformation reactions. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the as-synthesized Ag NPs are widely characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transmission infra-red spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The as-synthesized bio-mimetic Ag NPs show potential activity for several reduction reactions of nitro groups. The Ag NPs were also used for degradation of hazardous dyes such as Methylene blue and Crystal violet with good degradation rate constant.

Fabrication of self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels with the cellulose nanocrystals-based Janus hybrid nanomaterials

Janus nanomaterials possess remarkable prospects in the design of a series of smart materials with unique asymmetric properties. In this work, surface functionalized Janus cellulose nanocrystalline-type (CNCs-type) nanomaterials were manufactured by Pickering emulsion template and the construction of self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels has been realized. During emulsification, the mussel-inspired chemistry was employed to develop Janus nanocomposites. The extension of molecular chain of poly-lysine (PLL) and the polydopamine (PDA) coating were grafted on different sides of CNCs. Afterwards, the prepared nanocomposites were added to poly (acrylic acid) (PAA)-based hydrogels which formed by in-situ polymerization. The collaborative effect of metal-ligand coordination between the molecular chain of PLL, PDA coating, PAA chains and metal ions endowed the nanocomposite hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties (8.8 MPa) and self-healing efficiency (88.9%). Therefore, the synthesized Janus CNCs-PDA/PLL nanocomposites are expected to have diverse application in the development of smart materials with self-healing ability.

Self-Assembled Black Phosphorus-Based Composite Langmuir-Blodgett Films with an Enhanced Photocurrent Generation Capability and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Properties

In this work, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) composite thin films were successfully prepared using black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS) and dye molecules. Black phosphorus (BP) was first exfoliated in isopropanol solution to form BPNS, and then, BPNS were modified with 4-azidobenzoic acid (Az-BPNS) to improve their stability. The characterization results showed that the synthesized Az-BPNS-dye LB films have a uniform and ordered structure. In addition, the synthesized Az-BPNS-dye LB films exhibit excellent photoelectrochemical performance, and Az-BPNS-methylene blue (MB) produces higher photocurrent compared to Az-BPNS-Neutral red (NR) films. The current work shows an effective way to prepare functionalized BP-based materials and provide evidence for their application in optoelectronic devices.

Recent Advances in Electrospun Sustainable Composites for Biomedical, Environmental, Energy, and Packaging Applications

Electrospinning has gained constant enthusiasm and wide interest as a novel sustainable material processing technique due to its ease of operation and wide adaptability for fabricating eco-friendly fibers on a nanoscale. In addition, the device working parameters, spinning solution properties, and the environmental factors can have a significant effect on the fibers' morphology during electrospinning. This review summarizes the newly developed principles and influence factors for electrospinning technology in the past five years, including these factors' interactions with the electrospinning mechanism as well as its most recent applications of electrospun natural or sustainable composite materials in biology, environmental protection, energy, and food packaging materials.

Environmentally Friendly Water-Based Self-Crosslinking Acrylate Dispersion Containing Magnesium Nanoparticles and Their Films Exhibiting Antimicrobial Properties

A water-based polymeric acrylate dispersion (latex) containing MgO nanoparticles, which had been added at a concentration of 1.5% (with respect to the monomers) during the preparation procedure, was investigated as an environmentally friendly binder for sanitary interior paints. The properties of this new latex were compared to those of a reference system free of the magnesium nanoparticles, synthesized by the same route, i.e., by semi-continuous emulsion polymerization. Tests were made in order to ascertain the mechanical and chemical properties, flash corrosion resistance and antimicrobial effect of the latex films. The results revealed that the new latex containing magnesium nanoparticles provided solvent-resistant coating films having pronounced antimicrobial activity against all the tested bacterial and fungal strains. The desirable antimicrobial properties can be ascribed to the sharp-edged character of magnesium nanoparticles, the peroxidation of lipids and the formation of reactive oxygen species. Moreover, no flash corrosion was formed beneath coating films containing magnesium nanoparticles, which can be attributed to the alkaline action due to the dissolution of a fraction of MgO in latex medium. The results of all of the tests provided evidence of the superiority of the polymeric dispersion with the magnesium nanoparticles to the reference system containing no nanoparticles.

Synthesis, Physical, Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties of Nanocomposites Based on Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Graphene Oxide-Silver Nanoparticles

The design of new materials with antimicrobial properties has emerged in response to the need for preventing and controlling the growth of pathogenic microorganisms without the use of antibiotics. In this study, partially reduced graphene oxide decorated with silver nanoparticles (GO-AgNPs) was incorporated as a reinforcing filler with antibacterial properties to poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for preparation of poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphene oxide-silver nanoparticles nanocomposites (PVA/GO-AgNPs). AgNPs, spherical in shape and with an average size of 3.1 nm, were uniformly anchored on the partially reduced GO surface. PVA/GO-AgNPs nanocomposites showed exfoliated structures with improved thermal stability, tensile properties and water resistance compared to neat PVA. The glass transition and crystallization temperatures of the polymer matrix increased with the incorporation of the hybrid. The nanocomposites displayed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in a filler content- and time-dependent manner. S. aureus showed higher susceptibility to PVA/GO-AgNPs films than E. coli. Inhibitory activity was higher when bacterial cells were in contact with nanocomposite films than when in contact with leachates coming out of the films. GO-AgNPs based PVA nanocomposites could find application as wound dressings for wound healing and infection prevention.

Electrochemical Fabrication of rGO-embedded Ag-TiO2 Nanoring/Nanotube Arrays for Plasmonic Solar Water Splitting

Effective utilization of hot electrons generated from the decay of surface plasmon resonance in metal nanoparticles is conductive to improve solar water splitting efficiency. Herein, Ag nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) co-decorated hierarchical TiO2 nanoring/nanotube arrays (TiO2 R/T) were facilely fabricated by using two-step electrochemical anodization, electrodeposition, and photoreduction methods. Comparative studies were conducted to elucidate the effects of rGO and Ag on the morphology, photoresponse, charge transfer, and photoelectric properties of TiO2. Firstly, scanning electron microscope images confirm that the Ag nanoparticles adhered on TiO2 R/T and TiO2 R/T-rGO have similar diameter of 20 nm except for TiO2 R-rGO/T. Then, the UV-Vis DRS and scatter spectra reveal that the optical property of the Ag-TiO2 R/T-rGO ternary composite is enhanced, ascribing to the visible light absorption of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles and the weakening effect of rGO on light scattering. Meanwhile, intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectra demonstrate that rGO can promote the hot electrons transfer from Ag nanoparticles to Ti substrate, reducing the photogenerated electron-hole recombination. Finally, Ag-TiO2 R/T-rGO photoanode exhibits high photocurrent density (0.98 mA cm-2) and photovoltage (0.90 V), and the stable H2 evolution rate of 413 μL h-1 cm-2 within 1.5 h under AM 1.5 which exceeds by 1.30 times than that of pristine TiO2 R/T. In line with the above results, this work provides a reliable route synergizing rGO with plasmonic metal nanoparticles for photocatalysis, in which, rGO presents a broad absorption spectrum and effective photogenerated electrons transfer.

Facile preparation of a self-assembled Artemia cyst shell-TiO2-MoS2 porous composite structure with highly efficient catalytic reduction of nitro compounds for wastewater treatment

The catalytic reduction of nitro compounds is currently a hot research area, how to efficiently and stably degrade such toxic and harmful substances has become the research goal of many researchers. In this work, an Artemia cyst shell (ACS)-TiO2-MoS2 ternary porous structure was proposed and prepared as a catalyst for the reduction of 2-nitroaniline (2-NA) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The ACS has a large number of porous structures, exhibits a good binding ability with TiO2 and MoS2, and provides a large number of active sites for the catalytic reduction process. The obtained composite material has a good reduction effect on 4-NP and 2-NA, with a good stability and recyclability, which is obviously higher than the reduction effect of ACS-TiO2 and MoS2 under the same conditions. This work provides ideas for the design of porous catalytic materials.

Electrospinning Preparation of NC/GAP/Submicron-HNS Energetic Composite Fiber and its Properties

In this work, novel three-dimensional nitrocellulose/glycidyl azide polymer/submicron-2,2', 4,4', 6,6'-hexanitro-stilbene (NC/GAP/submicron-HNS) composite fibers were prepared by the electrospinning method. As-prepared NC/GAP/submicron-HNS fibers were continuous and possessed a large specific surface area. The structure of fibers was characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (IR). The results showed that HNS submicron particles were uniformly loaded on the surface of NC/GAP fibers and incorporated with it. Thermal analyses were performed. Such NC/GAP/submicron-HNS fibers showed a low activation energy of 204 kJ·mol-1 and large rate constant of 1.74 s-1, indicating high reactivity and fast reaction rate. The result of TG-IR analysis revealed that the main decomposition products of NC/GAP/submicron-HNS were CO2, CO, H2O, N2O, few NO, and fragments such as -CH2O- and -CH-, which were low-signature gases. An evaluation on the energy performance disclosed that the standard specific impulse (I sp) of NC/GAP/submicron-HNS fibers was 2032 N·s·kg-1, which was higher than 2014 N·s·kg-1 of NC/GAP. This meant the addition of HNS submicron particles to the NC/GAP fiber was favorable to the improvement of energy performance. Additionally, introduction of submicron-HNS made the energetic fibers becoming very insensitive to impact action. It was expected that as-prepared NC/GAP/submicron-HNS membranes were promising materials applied for solid rocket propellant.

Highly Efficient Catalytic Performances of Nitro Compounds and Morin via Self-Assembled MXene-Pd Nanocomposites Synthesized through Self-Reduction Strategy

With development of the society, the problem of environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious. There is the urgent need to develop a new type of sustainable green material for degradable pollutants. However, the conventional preparation method is limited by conditions such as cumbersome operation, high energy consumption, and high pollution. Here, a simple method named self-reduction has been proposed, to synthesize highly efficient catalytic nitro compounds and morin self-assembled MXene-Pd nanocomposites. Palladium nanoparticles were grown in situ on MXene nanosheets to form MXene@PdNPs. MXene@PdNPs composites with different reaction times were prepared by adjusting the reduction reaction time. In particular, MXene@PdNPs20 exhibited a high catalytic effect on 4-NP and 2-NA, and the first-order rate constants of the catalysis were 0.180 s-1 and 0.089 s-1, respectively. It should be noted that after eight consecutive catalytic cycles, the conversion to catalyze 4-NP was still greater than 94%, and the conversion to catalyze 2-NA was still greater than 91.8%. Therefore, the research of self-assembled MXene@PdNPs nanocomposites has important potential value for environmental management and sustainable development of human health, and provides new clues for the future research of MXene-based new catalyst materials.

Ultrasonic assisted enhanced adsorption of methyl orange dye onto polyaniline impregnated zinc oxide nanoparticles: Kinetic, isotherm and optimization of process parameters

The fabrication of novel functionalized composite materials as adsorbent is considered to be the core research area in adsorption technology for environmental applications. Indiscriminate disposal of industrial effluents containing toxic dyes has become a serious environmental issue across the globe since last few decades. In view of above, this study focused on the performance evaluation of ZnO/polyaniline nanocomposite (ZnO-PANI-NC) for quick ultrasonic assisted adsorptive remediation of methyl orange dye from aqua matrix. ZnO nanoparticles were fabricated by a simple co-precipitation method and ZnO-PANI-NC was synthesized by in situ oxidative polymerization of aniline monomer in presence of ZnO nanoparticles. The nanocomposite was extensively characterized for its crystalline nature, morphological characteristics, surface chemical bonding, specific surface area and pore volume by employing XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, and BET analysis. The ZnO-PANI-NC has shown superior adsorptive performance as compared to pure PANI as well as ZnO nanoparticles and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 240.84 mg/g was obtained for the ZnO-PANI-NC. Under ultrasonic environment the adsorption reaction reached to equilibrium (more than 98% MO dye removal) within 15 min of reaction. Adsorption process followed Langmuir isotherm model and second order kinetic model strictly and contribution of intra-particle diffusion was also observed. The ZnO-PANI-NC has shown its high regeneration ability (more than 86%) even after 5th consecutive cycles of adsorption-desorption. Response surface methodology based optimization was used to optimize the adsorption experimental data and maximum MO removal of 99.12% was observed at optimum sonication time 13 min, adsorbent dose 0.38 g/L and initial MO concentration at 28 mg/L.

Facile Preparation and Enhanced Catalytic Properties of Self-Assembled Pd Nanoparticle-Loaded Nanocomposite Films Synthesized via the Electrospun Approach

In recent years, people pay more attention to environmental pollution and the treatment of sewage has become the focus of recent research. Palladium nanoparticles have good catalytic properties but are easy to agglomerate. Therefore, we used the electrospinning technology to prepare a uniform composite nanofiber film based on polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which demonstrated that they are good carriers of palladium nanoparticles to make the nanoparticles well dispersed. Furthermore, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to increase the specific surface area of the composite nanofiber film and improve its mechanical properties. The successfully synthesized PAA/PVA/CNT-COOH@palladium nanoparticle (PdNP) composite fiber films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetry analysis. p-Nitrophenol and 2-nitroaniline were utilized as typical pollutants to further evaluate the catalytic performance of PAA/PVA/CNT-COOH@PdNP composite fiber films. The PAA/PVA/CNT-COOH@PdNP composite fiber films exhibited enhanced catalytic performance and could be reused for eight consecutive cycles. This work provided new clues for the preparation and application of composite electrospun film materials.

Efficient nanoparticles removal and bactericidal action of electrospun nanofibers membranes for air filtration

Human exposure to air pollution and especially to nanoparticles is increasing due to the combustion of carbon-based energy vectors. Fibrous filters are among the various types of equipment potentially able to remove particles from the air. Nanofibers are highly effective in this area; however, their utilization is still a challenge due to the lack of studies taking into account both nanoparticle collection efficiency and antibacterial effect. The aim of this work is to produce and evaluate novel silver/polyacrylonitrile (Ag/PAN) electrospun fibers deposited on a nonwoven substrate to be used as air filters to remove nanoparticles from the air and also showing antibacterial activity. In order to determine the optimum manufacturing conditions, the effects of several electrospinning process parameters were analyzed such as solution concentration, collector to needle distance, flow rate, voltage, and duration. Ag/PAN nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In addition, filtration performances were determined by measuring the pressure drop and collection efficiency of sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol particles (9 to 300 nm diameters) using Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers (SMPS). Filters with high filtration efficiency (≈100%) and high-quality factor (≈0.05 Pa^-1) were obtained even adding different concentrations of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) to PAN nanofibers. The resultant Ag/PAN nanofibers showed excellent antibacterial activity against 10⁴ CFU/mL E. coli bacteria.

Manganese oxide doping carbon aerogels prepared with MnO2 coordinated by N, N - dimethylmethanamide for supercapacitors

Carbon aerogels with excellent conductive characteristics and high specific capacitance have attracted more and more interests for next-generation energy storage applications. Three-dimensional interconnected Mn₂O₃/carbon aerogel supercapacitor electrodes are prepared by a novel doping method using MnO₂ coordinated by N, N-dimethylmethanamide (DMF). The coordinative MnO₂ (DMF/MnO₂) plays a key role in the sol-gel process of resorcinol and formaldehyde. The doped carbon aerogels exhibits a high specific surface area of 859 m² g^-1 and a good pore-size distribution of 10-15 nm. All of the doped carbon aerogels exhibit higher specific capacitance than pure carbon aerogels, and the highest specific capacitance (170 F g^-1), at current density of 1.0 A g^-1, is obtained in Mn-CA-5% when 5 mol% DMF/MnO₂ is added to the precursor solution. The specific capacitance is as high as 100 F g^-1, at current density of 10.0 A g^-1, and 97% of initial capacitance is retained over 1000 cycles at a current density of 5.0 A g^-1. The doped carbon aerogels exhibits a high coulombic efficiency (up to 99.8%) and a good rate capability. The corresponding result is due to the novel doping method of DMF/MnO₂ addition.

Preparation and Dye Degradation Performances of Self-Assembled MXene-Co3O4 Nanocomposites Synthesized via Solvothermal Approach

Two-dimensional metal carbides or nitrides (MXenes) demonstrated wide applications in energy storage, water treatment, electromagnetic shielding, gas/biosensing, and photoelectrochemical catalysis due to their higher specific surface area and excellent conductivity. They also have the advantages of flexible and adjustable components and controllable minimum nanolayer thickness. In this study, a cube-like Co3O4 particle-modified self-assembled MXene (Ti3C2) nanocomposite has been prepared successfully by a simple solvothermal method. The Co3O4 particles are well dispersed on the surface and inner layers of the Ti3C2 sheets, which effectively prevent the restacking of Ti3C2 sheets and form an organized composite structure. The physical properties of these nanocomposites were studied by using XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, and XPS. The performance of the obtained samples was evaluated as new nanocatalysts for degrading methylene blue and Rhodamine B in batch model experiments. The prepared Mxene-Co3O4 nanocomposites can be well regenerated and reused for eight consecutive cycles, indicating potential wide applications in wastewater treatment and composite materials.

Preparation of Self-Assembled Composite Films Constructed by Chemically-Modified MXene and Dyes with Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Characterization

The effective functionalization and self-assembly of MXene are of crucial importance for a broad range of nanomaterial applications. In this work, we investigated the aggregates of sulfanilic acid-modified MXene (abbreviated as MXene-SO3H) with three model dyes at the air⁻water interface and demonstrated the morphological and aggregation changes of composite films, using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technology, as well as excellent uniformity and reproducibility by using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra. This research has found that cationic dye molecules were adsorbed onto negatively charged MXene-SO3H particles mainly through electrostatic interaction and the particles induced dyes to form highly ordered nanostructures including H- and/or J-aggregates corresponding to monomers in bulk solution. The surface pressure-area isotherms from different dye sub phases confirmed that the stable composite films have been successfully formed. And the spectral results reveal that different dyes have different types of aggregations. In addition, the SERS spectra indicated that the optimal layers of MXene-SO3H/methylene blue (MB) films was 50 layers using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as probe molecule. And the formed 50 layers of MXene-SO3H/MB films (MXene-SO3H/MB-50) as SERS substrate were proved to possess excellent uniformity and repeatability.

Fabrication and Highly Efficient Dye Removal Characterization of Beta-Cyclodextrin-Based Composite Polymer Fibers by Electrospinning

Dye wastewater is one of the most important problems to be faced and solved in wastewater treatment. However, the treatment cannot be single and simple adsorption due to the complexity of dye species. In this work, we prepared novel composite fiber adsorbent materials consisting of ε-polycaprolactone (PCL) and beta-cyclodextrin-based polymer (PCD) by electrospinning. The morphological and spectral characterization demonstrated the successful preparation of a series of composite fibers with different mass ratios. The obtained fiber materials have demonstrated remarkable selective adsorption for MB and 4-aminoazobenzene solutions. The addition of a PCD component in composite fibers enhanced the mechanical strength of membranes and changed the adsorption uptake due to the cavity molecular structure via host⁻guest interaction. The dye removal efficiency could reach 24.1 mg/g towards 4-aminoazobenzene. Due to the admirable stability and selectivity adsorption process, the present prepared beta-cyclodextrin-based composite fibers have demonstrated potential large-scale applications in dye uptake and wastewater treatment.

Facile Preparation of Self-Assembled Polydopamine-Modified Electrospun Fibers for Highly Effective Removal of Organic Dyes

Polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles can be used as an adsorbent with excellent adsorption capacity. However, nanosized adsorbents are prone to aggregation and thus are severely limited in the field of adsorption. In order to solve this problem, we utilized polydopamine in-situ oxidation self-polymerization on the surface of polycaprolactone (PCL)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) electrospun fiber after solvent vapor annealing (SVA) treatment, and successfully designed and prepared a PCL/PEO@PDA composite membrane. The SVA treatment regulated the microscopic morphology of smooth PCL/PEO electrospun fibers that exhibited a pleated microstructure, increasing the specific surface area, and providing abundant active sites for the anchoring of PDA nanoparticles. The PCL/PEO@PDA composite obtained by chemical modification of PDA demonstrated numerous active sites for the adsorption of methylene (MB) and methyl orange (MO). In addition, the PCL/PEO@PDA composites were reusable several times with good reutilization as adsorbents. Therefore, we have developed a highly efficient and non-agglomerated dye adsorbent that exhibits potential large-scale application in dye removal and wastewater purification.

Facile solvothermal preparation of Fe3O4–Ag nanocomposite with excellent catalytic performance

Functional nanocomposites demonstrate excellent comprehensive properties and outstanding characteristics for numerous applications. Magnetic nanocomposites are an important type of composite materials, due to their applications in optics, medicine and catalysis. In this report, a new Fe₃O₄-loaded silver (Fe₃O₄–Ag) nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized via a simple solvothermal method and in situ growth of silver nanowires. The silver nanowires were prepared via the reduction of silver vanadate with the addition of uniformly dispersed Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Structural and morphological characterizations of the obtained Fe₃O₄–Ag nanocomposite were carried out using many characterization methods. As a new composite catalyst, the synthesized magnetic Fe₃O₄–Ag nanocomposite displayed a high utilization rate of catalytically active sites in catalytic reaction medium and showed good separation and recovery using an external magnetic field. The facile preparation and good catalytic performance of this Fe₃O₄–Ag nanocomposite material demonstrate its potential applications in catalytic treatment and composite materials.

Facile Preparation of Rod-like MnO Nanomixtures via Hydrothermal Approach and Highly Efficient Removal of Methylene Blue for Wastewater Treatment

In the present study, nanoscale rod-shaped manganese oxide (MnO) mixtures were successfully prepared from graphitic carbon nitride (C₃N₄) and potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) through a hydrothermal method. The as-prepared MnO nanomixtures exhibited high activity in the adsorption and degradation of methylene blue (MB). The as-synthesized products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), surface area analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the effects of the dose of MnO nanomixtures, pH of the solution, initial concentration of MB, and the temperature of MB removal in dye adsorption and degradation experiments was investigated. The degradation mechanism of MB upon treatment with MnO nanomixtures and H₂O₂ was studied and discussed. The results showed that a maximum adsorption capacity of 154 mg g-1 was obtained for a 60 mg L-1 MB solution at pH 9.0 and 25 °C, and the highest MB degradation ratio reached 99.8% under the following optimum conditions: 50 mL of MB solution (20 mg L-1) at room temperature and pH ≈ 8.0 with 7 mg of C, N-doped MnO and 0.5 mL of H₂O₂.
