Hexagonal Boron Nitride Functionalized with Au Nanoparticles-Properties and Potential Biological Applications

Assessment of the drug delivery potential of graphene, boron nitride and their in-plane doped structures for hydroxyurea anti-cancer drug via DFT study

Globally, cancer is the most common cause of mortality among all deadly diseases. As a result, a nanotechnology-based drug delivery system is used to improve the efficacy of cancer treatment, which provides an improved therapeutic index and delivers multiple drugs directly to the tumor site. In the present work, DFT calculations were employed to investigate the surface adsorption of a hydroxyurea (HU) anticancer drug on pristine graphene (GP), boron nitride (B24N24), and doped GP by replacing some of its carbon atoms with boron (B) and nitrogen (N) atoms to form C30B9N9, C16B16N16, and C6B21N21 nanosheets. In gas media, HU is adsorbed on these C30B9N9, C16B16N16, C6B21N21, and B24N24 nanosheets with adsorption energies of -0.70, -3.03, -2.47, and -1.96 eV, respectively. Alternatively, in water solvent media, the adsorption energies of C30B9N9, C16B16N16, C6B21N21, and B24N24 are -0.82, -0.29, -0.15, and -0.26 eV, respectively. The energy gaps of the nanosheets were found to be 0.288, 0.174, 0.14, and 4.562 eV before adsorption, respectively. After the adsorption of HU on the proposed nanosheets, the energy gap was reduced to 0.15 eV for C16B16N16. According to the DOS spectra, noticeable peaks appeared in the Fermi level after the adsorption of HU on the nanosheets, which indicates the reduction of the energy gap. Quantum molecular analysis predicted that the chemical potential, electrophilicity index, and nucleophilicity index of C16B16N16 increased, whereas global hardness decreased, indicating high reactivity. Therefore, it can be concluded that among the proposed nanosheets, C16B16N16 would be an appropriate carrier for the HU drug.

1D and 2D Boron Nitride Nano Structures: A Critical Analysis for Emerging Applications in the Field of Nanocomposites

Boron nitride (BN) with its 1D and 2D nano derivatives have gained immense popularity in both the field of research and applications. These nano derivatives have proved to be one of the most promising fillers which can be incorporated in polymers to form nanocomposites with excellent properties. These materials have been around for 25 years whereas significant research has been done in this field for only the past decade. There are many interesting properties which are imparted to the nanocomposites wherein thermal stability, large energy band gap, resistance to oxidation, excellent thermal conductivity, chemical inertness, and exceptional mechanical properties are just a few worthy of mention. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was selected as the parent material by most researchers reviewed in this paper through which 2D derivative Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) and 1D derivative Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are synthesized. This review will focus on the in-depth properties of h-BN and further will concisely focus on BNNS and BNNTs for their various properties. A detailed discussion of the addition of BNNS and BNNTs into polymers to form nanocomposites, their synthesis, properties, and applications is followed by a summary determining the most suitable synthesizing processes and the materials, keeping in mind the current challenges.

Experimental and Theoretical Insights into Interfacial Properties of 2D Materials for Selective Water Transport Membranes: A Critical Review

Interfacial properties, such as wettability and friction, play critical roles in nanofluidics and desalination. Understanding the interfacial properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials is crucial in these applications due to the close interaction between liquids and the solid surface. The most important interfacial properties of a solid surface include the water contact angle, which quantifies the extent of interactions between the surface and water, and the water slip length, which determines how much faster water can flow on the surface beyond the predictions of continuum fluid mechanics. This Review seeks to elucidate the mechanism that governs the interfacial properties of diverse 2D materials, including transition metal dichalcogenides (e.g., MoS2), graphene, and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Our work consolidates existing experimental and computational insights into 2D material synthesis and modeling and explores their interfacial properties for desalination. We investigated the capabilities of density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations in analyzing the interfacial properties of 2D materials. Specifically, we highlight how MD simulations have revolutionized our understanding of these properties, paving the way for their effective application in desalination. This Review of the synthesis and interfacial properties of 2D materials unlocks opportunities for further advancement and optimization in desalination.

Electronic and structural properties of Möbius boron-nitride and carbon nanobelts

For the development of nanofilters and nanosensors, we wish to know the impact of size on their geometric, electronic, and thermal stabilities. Using the semiempirical tight binding method as implemented in the xTB program, we characterized Möbius boron-nitride and carbon-based nanobelts with different sizes and compared them to each other and to normal nanobelts. The calculated properties include the infrared spectra, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), the energy gap, the chemical potential, and the molecular hardness. The agreement between the peak positions from theoretical infrared spectra compared with experimental ones for all systems validates the methodology that we used. Our findings show that for the boron-nitride-based nanobelts, the calculated properties have an opposite monotonic relationship with the size of the systems, whereas for the carbon-based nanobelts, the properties show the same monotonic relationship for both types of nanobelts. Also, the torsion presented on the Möbius nanobelts, in the case of boron-nitride, induced an inhomogeneous surface distribution for the HOMO orbitals. High-temperature molecular dynamics also allowed us to contrast carbon-based systems with boron-nitride systems at various temperatures. In all cases, the properties vary with the increase in size of the nanobelts, indicating that it is possible to choose the desired values by changing the size and type of the systems. This work has many implications for future studies, for example our results show that carbon-based nanobelts did not break as we increased the temperature, whereas boron-nitride nanobelts had a rupture temperature that varied with their size; this is a meaningful result that can be tested when the use of more accurate simulation methods become practical for such systems in the future.

Intracellular biocompatible hexagonal boron nitride quantum emitters as single-photon sources and barcodes

Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have been emerging as a multifunctional platform for various optical applications including quantum information processing, quantum computing and imaging. Simultaneously, due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability hBN is a promising material for biomedical applications. In this work, we demonstrate single-photon emission from hBN color centers embedded inside live cells and their application to cellular barcoding. The generation and internalization of multiple color centers into cells was performed via simple and scalable procedure while keeping the cells unharmed. The emission from live cells was observed as multiple diffraction-limited spots, which exhibited excellent single-photon characteristics with high single-photon purity of 0.1 and superb emission stability without photobleaching or spectral shifts over several hours. Due to different emission wavelengths and peak widths of the color centers, they were employed as barcodes. We term them Quantum Photonic Barcodes (QPBs). Each QPB can exist in one out of 470 possible distinguishable states and a combination of a few QPBs per cell can be used to uniquely tag virtually an unlimited number of cells. The barcodes developed here offer some excellent properties, including ease of production by a single-step procedure, biocompatibility and biodegradability, emission stability, no photobleaching, small size and a huge number of unique barcodes. This work provides a basis for the use of hBN color centers for robust barcoding of cells and due to the single photon emission, presented concepts could in future be extended to quantum-limited sensing and super-resolution imaging.

Electronic Structure and Surface Chemistry of Hexagonal Boron Nitride on HOPG and Nickel Substrates

The effect of point defects and interactions with the substrate are shown by density functional theory calculations to be of significant importance for the structure and functional properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) films on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and Ni(111) substrates. The structure, surface chemistry, and electronic properties are calculated for h-BN systems with selected intrinsic, oxygen, and carbon defects and with graphene hybrid structures. The electronic structure of a pristine monolayer of h-BN is dependent on the type of substrate, as h-BN is decoupled electronically from the HOPG surface and acts as bulk-like h-BN, whereas on a Ni(111) substrate, metallic-like behavior is predicted. These different film/substrate systems therefore show different reactivities and defect chemistries. The formation energies for substitutional defects are significantly lower than for intrinsic defects regardless of the substrate, and vacancies formed during film deposition are expected to be filled by either ambient oxygen or carbon from impurities. Significantly lower formation energies for intrinsic and oxygen and carbon substitutional defects were predicted for h-BN on Ni(111). In-plane h-BCN hybrid structures were predicted to be terminated by N-C bonding. Substitutional carbon on the boron site imposes n-type semiconductivity in h-BN, and the n-type character increases significantly for h-BN on HOPG. The h-BN film surface becomes electronically decoupled from the substrate when exceeding monolayer thickness, showing that the surface electronic properties and point defect chemistry for multilayer h-BN films should be comparable to those of a freestanding h-BN layer.

Advances in drug delivery systems, challenges and future directions

Advances in molecular pharmacology and an improved understanding of the mechanism of most diseases have created the need to specifically target the cells involved in the initiation and progression of diseases. This is especially true for most life-threatening diseases requiring therapeutic agents which have numerous side effects, thus requiring accurate tissue targeting to minimize systemic exposure. Recent drug delivery systems (DDS) are formulated using advanced technology to accelerate systemic drug delivery to the specific target site, maximizing therapeutic efficacy and minimizing off-target accumulation in the body. As a result, they play an important role in disease management and treatment. Recent DDS offer greater advantages when compared to conventional drug delivery systems due to their enhanced performance, automation, precision, and efficacy. They are made of nanomaterials or miniaturized devices with multifunctional components that are biocompatible, biodegradable, and have high viscoelasticity with an extended circulating half-life. This review, therefore, provides a comprehensive insight into the history and technological advancement of drug delivery systems. It updates the most recent drug delivery systems, their therapeutic applications, challenges associated with their use, and future directions for improved performance and use.

Interaction of Anagrelide drug molecule on pristine and doped boron nitride nanocages: a DFT, RDG, PCM and QTAIM investigation

Nowadays, a nanostructure-based drug delivery system is one of the most noticeable topics to be studied, and in this regard, boron nitride nanoclusters are promising drug carriers for targeted drug delivery systems. In this article, the interaction mechanism of Anagrelide (AG) drug with B12N12 and Al- and Ga-doped B12N12 nanocages have been investigated using DFT with B3LYP/6-31 G (d, p) method in both gas and water media. All our studied complexes are thermodynamically stable, and doped nanocage complexes have higher negative adsorption energy (EAd.) and negative solvation energy than AG/B12N12 complexes which correspond to the stability of these systems in both media. The negative highest EAd value is 64.98 kcal/mol (63.17 kcal/mol) and 65.69 kcal/mol (65.11 kcal/mol) in gas (water) media for complex F (AG/AlB11N12) and complex I (AG/GaB11N12) respectively, which refers to the highest stability of these systems. The enhanced values of dipole moment (from 12.40 (12.65) Debye to 17.21 (17.69) Debye in complex F (complex I)) also confirm their stability. The QTAIM and RDG analysis endorse the strong adsorption nature of the AG drug onto the AlB11N12, and GaB11N12 nanocages, which is consistent with the adsorption energy as chemisorption occurs for these complexes. According to the electronic properties, doped nanocages show high sensitivity that infers their promising nature for drug delivery purposes. Thus, complex F and complex I are promising drug delivery systems, and doped nanocages (AlB11N12 and GaB11N12) are better carriers than pristine nanocages for the AG drug delivery system.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Preparation and Thermal Conductivity Enhancement of Boron Nitride Nano-Material PiG Composite

With the improvement of the conversion efficiency of LED chip and fluorescent material and the increasing demand for high-brightness light sources, LED technology has begun to move toward the direction of high-power. However, there is a huge problem that high-power LED must face with a large amount of heat generated by high power causing a high temperature thermal decay or even thermal quenching of the fluorescent material in the device, resulting in a reduction of the luminous efficiency, color coordinates, color rendering index, light uniformity, and service life of LED. In order to solve this problem, fluorescent materials with high thermal stability and better heat dissipation were prepared to enhance their performance in high-power LED environments. A variety of boron nitride nanomaterials were prepared by the solid phase-gas phase method. By adjusting the ratio of boric acid to urea in the raw material, different BN nanoparticles and nanosheets were obtained. Moreover, the control of catalyst amount and synthesis temperature can be used to synthesize boron nitride nanotubes with various morphologies. By adding different morphologies and quantities of BN material in PiG (phosphor in glass), the mechanical strength, heat dissipation, and luminescent properties of the sheet can be effectively controlled. PiG prepared by adding the right number of nanotubes and nanosheets has higher quantum efficiency and better heat dissipation after being excited by high power LED.

Preparation, Characterization, and Drug Delivery of Hexagonal Boron Nitride-Borate Bioactive Glass Biomimetic Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

In this study, biomimetic borate-based bioactive glass scaffolds containing hexagonal boron nitride hBN nanoparticles (0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2% by weight) were manufactured with the polymer foam replication technique to be used in hard tissue engineering and drug delivery applications. To create three-dimensional cylindrical-shaped scaffolds, polyurethane foams were used as templates and covered using a suspension of glass and hBN powder mixture. Then, a heat treatment was applied at 570 °C in an air atmosphere to remove the polymer foam from the structure and to sinter the glass structures. The structural, morphological, and mechanical properties of the fabricated composites were examined in detail. The in vitro bioactivity of the prepared composites was tested in simulated body fluid, and the release behavior of gentamicin sulfate and 5-fluorouracil from glass scaffolds were analyzed separately as a function of time. The cytotoxicity was investigated using osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. The findings indicated that the hBN nanoparticles, up to a certain concentration in the glass matrix, improved the mechanical strength of the glass scaffolds, which mimic the cancellous bone. Additionally, the inclusion of hBN nanoparticles enhanced the in vitro hydroxyapatite-forming ability of bioactive glass composites. The presence of hBN nanoparticles accelerated the drug release rates of the system. It was concluded that bioactive glass/hBN composite scaffolds mimicking native bone tissue could be used for bone tissue repair and regeneration applications.

Interactions of boron nitride nanosheet with amino acids of differential polarity

Free amino acids represent a category of different biomolecules in the blood plasma, which bond together to make up larger organic molecules such as peptides and proteins. Their interactions with biocompatible nanoparticles are especially important for plasma-related biomedical applications. Among the various nanomaterials, the applications of carbon and boron nitride-based nanotubes/nanosheets have shown a huge increase in recent years. The effect of molecular polarity on the interaction between a boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) and amino acids is investigated with quantum mechanical calculations by density functional theory (DFT), classical MD simulations, and well-tempered metadynamics simulations. Four representative amino acids, namely, alanine (Ala), a nonpolar amino acid, and aspartic acid (Asp), lysine (Lys) and serine (Ser), three polar amino acids are considered for their interactions with BNNS. In DFT calculations, the values of the adsorption energies for Lys-BNNS and Ser-BNNS complexes are - 48.32 and - 32.89 kJ/mol, respectively, which are more stable than the other cases. Besides, the adsorption energy calculated confirms the exergonic reactions for all investigated systems; it implied that the interaction is favorable electronically. The MD results show that the LYS molecules have a higher attraction toward BNNS because of its alkane tail in its side chain, and the ASP revealed the repulsion force originating from its COO- group. All the results are confirmed by free energy analyzes in which the LYS showed the highest adsorption free energy at a relatively farther distance than other complexes. In fact, our results revealed the contribution of functional groups and backbone of the amino acids in the adsorption or repulsion features of the studied systems.

2D Materials and Primary Human Dendritic Cells: A Comparative Cytotoxicity Study

Human health can be affected by materials indirectly through exposure to the environment or directly through close contact and uptake. With the ever-growing use of 2D materials in many applications such as electronics, medical therapeutics, molecular sensing, and energy storage, it has become more pertinent to investigate their impact on the immune system. Dendritic cells (DCs) are highly important, considering their role as the main link between the innate and the adaptive immune system. By using primary human DCs, it is shown that hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum disulphide have minimal effects on viability. In particular, it is evidenced that hBN and GO increase DC maturation, while GO leads to the release of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory cytokines. hBN and MoS₂ increase T cell proliferation with and without the presence of DCs. hBN in particular does not show any sign of downstream T cell polarization. The study allows ranking of the three materials in terms of inherent toxicity, providing the following trend: GO > hBN ≈ MoS₂ , with GO the most cytotoxic.

Long-Time Behavior of Surface Properties of Microstructures Fabricated by Multiphoton Lithography

The multiphoton lithography (MPL) technique represents the future of 3D microprinting, enabling the production of complex microscale objects with high precision. Although the MPL fabrication parameters are widely evaluated and discussed, not much attention has been given to the microscopic properties of 3D objects with respect to their surface properties and time-dependent stability. These properties are of crucial importance when it comes to the safe and durable use of these structures in biomedical applications. In this work, we investigate the surface properties of the MPL-produced SZ2080 polymeric microstructures with regard to the physical aging processes during the post-production stage. The influence of aging on the polymeric microstructures was investigated by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). As a result, a time-dependent change in Young's Modulus, plastic deformation, and adhesion and their correlation to the development in chemical composition of the surface of MPL-microstructures are evaluated. The results presented here are valuable for the application of MPL-fabricated 3D objects in general, but especially in medical technology as they give detailed information of the physical and chemical time-dependent dynamic behavior of MPL-printed surfaces and thus their suitability and performance in biological systems.

Surface adsorption of nitrosourea on pristine and doped (Al, Ga and In) boron nitride nanosheets as anticancer drug carriers: the DFT and COSMO insights

To minimize the side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs and enhance the effectiveness of cancer treatment, it is necessary to find a suitable drug delivery carrier for anticancer drugs. Recently nanomaterials are extensively being studied as drug vehicles and transport drugs in tumor cells. Using DFT calculations, the adsorption behavior with electronic sensitivity and reactivity of pristine and doped (Al, Ga and In)-BNNS towards the nitrosourea (NU) drug has been investigated in gas as well as water media. Our calculations showed that the NU drug is physically adsorbed on the pristine BNNS with −0.49 and −0.26 eV by transferring little amount of charge of about 0.033e and 0.046e in gas and water media in the most stable complex. But after replacing one of the central B atoms with an Al or Ga or In atom, the sensitivity of the doped BNNS remarkably enhances towards the NU drug molecules. The NU drug prefers to be chemically adsorbed on the BN(Al)NS, BN(Ga)NS and BN(In)NS by −1.28, −1.58 and −3.06 eV in the gas phase and −1.34, −1.23 and −3.65 eV in water media in the most stable complexes respectively. The large destabilization of LUMO energies after the adsorption of the NU drug on the BN(Al)NS, BN(Ga)NS and BN(In)NS significantly reduces their E_g from 4.37 to 0.69, 4.37 to 1.04 and 4.33 to 0.66 eV in the S1 complex respectively. The reduction of E_g of doped BNNS by the NU drug greatly enhances the electrical conductivity which can be converted to an electrical signal. Therefore, this doped BNNS can be used as a fascinating electronic sensor for the detection of NU drug molecules. Furthermore the work function of the doped BNNS was largely affected by the NU drug adsorption about 47.3%, 39.3% and 40.4% in the gas phase and 41.3%, 36.6% and 31.6% in water media in the S1 complex of NU/BN(Al)NS, NU/BN(Ga)NS and NU/BN(In)NS respectively. Thus, the doped BNNS may be used as a Ф type sensor for NU drug molecules.

Doped (Al, Ga and In)-BNNS can be used as fascinating drug carriers for the NU drug.

Biotransformations and cytotoxicity of eleven graphene and inorganic two-dimensional nanomaterials using simulated digestions coupled with a triculture in vitro model of the human gastrointestinal epithelium

Background

Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have already made their way into myriad applications and products across multiple industries. However, the potential health risks of exposure to ENMs remain poorly understood. This is particularly true for the emerging class of ENMs know as 2-dimensional nanomaterials (2DNMs), with a thickness of one or a few layers of atoms arranged in a planar structure.

Methods

The present study assesses the biotransformations and in vitro cytotoxicity in the gastrointestinal tract of 11 2DNMs, namely graphene, graphene oxide (GO), partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), molybdenum disulphide (MoS2), and tungsten disulphide (WS2). The evaluated pristine materials were either readily dispersed in water or dispersed with the use of a surfactant (Na-cholate or PF108). Materials dispersed in a fasting food model (FFM, water) were subjected to simulated 3-phase (oral, gastric, and small intestinal) digestion to replicate the biotransformations that would occur in the GIT after ingestion. A triculture model of small intestinal epithelium was used to assess the effects of the digested products (digestas) on epithelial layer integrity, cytotoxicity, viability, oxidative stress, and initiation of apoptosis.

Results

Physicochemical characterization of the 2DNMs in FFM dispersions and in small intestinal digestas revealed significant agglomeration by all materials during digestion, most prominently by graphene, which was likely caused by interactions with digestive proteins. Also, MoS2 had dissolved by ~75% by the end of simulated digestion. Other than a low but statistically significant increase in cytotoxicity observed with all inorganic materials and graphene dispersed in PF108, no adverse effects were observed in the exposed tricultures.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that occasional ingestion of small quantities of 2DNMs may not be highly cytotoxic in a physiologically relevant in vitro model of the intestinal epithelium. Still, their inflammatory or genotoxic potential after short- or long-term ingestion remains unclear and needs to be studied in future in vitro and in vivo studies. These would include studies of effects on co-ingested nutrient digestion and absorption, which have been documented for numerous ingested ENMs, as well as effects on the gut microbiome, which can have important health implications.

Converging 2D Nanomaterials and 3D Bioprinting Technology: State-of-the-Art, Challenges, and Potential Outlook in Biomedical Applications

The development of next-generation of bioinks aims to fabricate anatomical size 3D scaffold with high printability and biocompatibility. Along with the progress in 3D bioprinting, 2D nanomaterials (2D NMs) prove to be emerging frontiers in the development of advanced materials owing to their extraordinary properties. Harnessing the properties of 2D NMs in 3D bioprinting technologies can revolutionize the development of bioinks by endowing new functionalities to the current bioinks. First the main contributions of 2D NMS in 3D bioprinting technologies are categorized here into six main classes: 1) reinforcement effect, 2) delivery of bioactive molecules, 3) improved electrical conductivity, 4) enhanced tissue formation, 5) photothermal effect, 6) and stronger antibacterial properties. Next, the recent advances in the use of each certain 2D NMs (1) graphene, 2) nanosilicate, 3) black phosphorus, 4) MXene, 5) transition metal dichalcogenides, 6) hexagonal boron nitride, and 7) metal-organic frameworks) in 3D bioprinting technology are critically summarized and evaluated thoroughly. Third, the role of physicochemical properties of 2D NMSs on their cytotoxicity is uncovered, with several representative examples of each studied 2D NMs. Finally, current challenges, opportunities, and outlook for the development of nanocomposite bioinks are discussed thoroughly.

The Synthesis and Characterization of h-BN Nanosheets with High Yield and Crystallinity

Nowadays, boron nitride (BN) has attracted a great deal of attention due to its physical and chemical properties, such as high-temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, heat conduction, electrical insulation, and neutron absorption. The unique lamellar, reticular, and tubular morphologies and physicochemical properties of BN make it attractive in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, hydrogen storage, thermal conduction, insulation, dielectric substrate of electronic devices, radiation protection, polymer composites, medicine, etc. Based on this, we propose a novel method to produce boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) by a two-step method. The structure and morphology of the prepared BNNSs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, XRD, FTIR, etc. The results showed that the prepared BNNSs had high crystallinity and the stripping efficiency of h-BN as well as the performance and yield of BNNSs had been improved, and the cost and environmental pollution of BNNS preparation had been reduced accordingly.

Methods of hexagonal boron nitride exfoliation and its functionalization: covalent and non-covalent approaches

The exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNSs) from bulk hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) materials has received intense interest owing to their fascinating physical, chemical, and biological properties. Numerous exfoliation techniques offer scalable approaches for harvesting single-layer or few-layer h-BNNSs. Their structure is very comparable to graphite, and they have numerous significant applications owing to their superb thermal, electrical, optical, and mechanical performance. Exfoliation from bulk stacked h-BN is the most cost-effective way to obtain large quantities of few layer h-BN. Herein, numerous methods have been discussed to achieve the exfoliation of h-BN, each with advantages and disadvantages. Herein, we describe the existing exfoliation methods used to fabricate single-layer materials. Besides exfoliation methods, various functionalization methods, such as covalent, non-covalent, and Lewis acid-base approaches, including physical and chemical methods, are extensively described for the preparation of several h-BNNS derivatives. Moreover, the unique and potent characteristics of functionalized h-BNNSs, like enhanced solubility in water, improved thermal conductivity, stability, and excellent biocompatibility, lead to certain extensive applications in the areas of biomedical science, electronics, novel polymeric composites, and UV photodetectors, and these are also highlighted.

Stimulated Emission Depletion Spectroscopy of Color Centers in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

We demonstrate the use of Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) spectroscopy to map the electron-optical-phonon sideband of the ground state of the radiative transition of color centers in hexagonal boron nitride emitting at 2.0-2.2 eV, with in-plane linear polarization. The measurements are compared to photoluminescence of excitation (PLE) spectra that maps the electron-optical-phonon sideband of the excited state. The main qualitative difference is a red-shift in the longitudinal optical phonon peak associated with E _1u symmetry at the zone center. We compare our results to theoretical work on different defect species in hBN and find they are consistent with a carbon-based defect.

Neuroprotective effects of boron nitride nanoparticles in the experimental Parkinson's disease model against MPP+ induced apoptosis

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most aggressive neurodegenerative diseases and characterized by the loss of dopamine-sensitive neurons in the substantia nigra region of the brain. There is no any definitive treatment to completely cure PD and existing treatments can only ease the symptoms of the disease. Boron nitride nanoparticles have been extensively studied in nano-biological studies and researches showed that it can be a promising candidate for PD treatment with its biologically active unique properties. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate ameliorative effects of hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles (hBNs) against toxicity of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP⁺) in experimental PD model. Experimental PD model was constituted by application of MPP⁺ to differentiated pluripotent human embryonal carcinoma cell (Ntera-2, NT-2) culture in wide range of concentrations (0.62 to 2 mM). Neuroprotective activity of hBNs against MPP⁺ toxicity was determined by cell viability assays including MTT and LDH release. Oxidative alterations by hBNs application in PD cell culture model were investigated using total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant status (TOS) tests. The impacts of hBNs and MPP⁺ on nuclear integrity were analyzed by Hoechst 33258 fluorescent staining method. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme activities were determined by a colorimetric assay towards to hBNs treatment. Cell death mechanisms caused by hBNs and MPP+ exposure was investigated by flow cytometry analysis. Experimental results showed that application of hBNs increased cell viability in PD model against MPP⁺ application. TAS and TOS analysis were determined that antioxidant capacity elevated after hBNs applications while oxidant levels were reduced. Furthermore, flow cytometric analysis executed that MPP⁺ induced apoptosis was prevented significantly (p < 0.05) after application with hBNs. In a conclusion, the obtained results indicated that hBNs have a huge potential against MPP⁺ toxicity and can be used in PD treatment as novel neuroprotective agent and drug delivery system.

Size-Dependent in Vitro Biocompatibility and Uptake Process of Polymeric Carbon Nitride

Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN), which demonstrates unique properties, has been widely explored, mostly in photocatalysis; however, the evaluation of its biocompatibility is still needed. Herein, the cytocompatibility of PCN with different lateral size distributions (A-PCN with 160 nm, B-PCN with 20 nm, and C-PCN with 10 nm dominating lateral sizes) was investigated. The viability of three cell lines (L929, MCF-7, and HepG2) has been determined using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), neutral red uptake (NRU), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage assays. It was found that the highest cytotoxicity of PCN was observed for flakes with a lateral size of ∼20 nm (B-PCN) in three cell lines after 48 h of exposition. The uptake process of B-PCN sheets labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) by cells was also the most effective. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed the nanomaterial distribution throughout the cytoplasm and perinuclear region. The results demonstrated the correlation among size, internalization process, and cytocompatibility of the tested polymeric carbon nitride structures.

Synthesis, Functionalization, and Bioapplications of Two-Dimensional Boron Nitride Nanomaterials

Two-dimensional boron nitride nanostructures (2D-BNNs) have been increasingly investigated for their applications in several scientific and technological areas. This considerable interest is due to their unique physicochemical properties, which include high hydrophobicity, heat and electrical insulation, resistance to oxidation, antioxidation capacity, thermal conductivity, high chemical stability, mechanical strength, and hydrogen storage capacity. They are also used as fillers, antibacterial agents, protective coating agents, lubricants, boron neutron capture therapy agents, nanocarriers for drug delivery, and for the receptor phase in chemosensors. The investigations for their use in medicine and biomedicine are very promising, including cancer therapy and wound healing. In this review, 2D-BNNs synthesis and their surface modification strategies, biocompatibility, and bioapplication studies are discussed. Finally, a perspective for the future use of these novel nanomaterials in the biomedical field is provided.

Molecular-Level Interactions between Engineered Materials and Cells

Various recent experimental observations indicate that growing cells on engineered materials can alter their physiology, function, and fate. This finding suggests that better molecular-level understanding of the interactions between cells and materials may guide the design and construction of sophisticated artificial substrates, potentially enabling control of cells for use in various biomedical applications. In this review, we introduce recent research results that shed light on molecular events and mechanisms involved in the interactions between cells and materials. We discuss the development of materials with distinct physical, chemical, and biological features, cellular sensing of the engineered materials, transfer of the sensing information to the cell nucleus, subsequent changes in physical and chemical states of genomic DNA, and finally the resulting cellular behavior changes. Ongoing efforts to advance materials engineering and the cell-material interface will eventually expand the cell-based applications in therapies and tissue regenerations.

Polyethylenimine Assisted Bio-Inspired Surface Functionalization of Hexagonal Boron Nitride for Enhancing the Crystallization and the Properties of Poly(Arylene Ether Nitrile)

Semi-crystalline poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) has exhibited remarkable potential in various fields. However, the inherent drawbacks of PEN such as slow crystalline rate and low crystallinity limit its further development. To alleviate this problem, the choice of nanofiller as nucleation agent and the interfacial compatibility between nanofiller and PEN matrix are two momentous factors that need to be considered. Accordingly, in this work, functionalized hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN@(PDA+PEI)) was successfully synthesized via polyethylenimine (PEI) assisted bio-inspired surface functionalization, and then homogeneously dispersed in the PEN resin using solution casting method to obtain functional polymer nanocomposite films with strengthening the crystallization behavior, mechanical and dielectric properties. Various testing methods including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and polarizing microscope (POM) were applied to intricately analyze the effect of h-BN@(PDA+PEI) on the crystallization behavior of PEN composites. The testing results certificated that the h-BN@(PDA+PEI) can effectively improve the crystallinity (from 6.56% to 14.90%), and the spherulite size of PEN was reduced while the nucleation density of nanocomposites was raised. Furthermore, the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics demonstrated that 2 wt% h-BN@(PDA+PEI) could significantly reduce the cold crystallization temperature (T_p) and the crystallization activation energy (E_a) (from 359.7 KJ/mol to 292.8 KJ/mol), while it improved the crystallization rate (K_c) of PEN. In addition, the mechanical and dielectric properties of nanocomposite films were also reinforced to further broaden the application of semi-crystalline PEN. Therefore, the h-BN@(PDA+PEI) can function as an effectual nucleating agent and enhance the performance of PEN.

AuNPs-Based Thermoresponsive Nanoreactor as an Efficient Catalyst for the Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

A new AuNPs-based thermosensitive nanoreactor (SiO₂@PMBA@Au@PNIPAM) was designed and prepared by stabilizing AuNPs in the layer of poly(N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide) (PMBA) and subsequent wrapping with the temperature-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) layer. The new nanoreactor exhibited high dispersibility and stability in aqueous solution and effectively prevented the aggregation of AuNPs caused by the phase transformation of PNIPAM. The XPS and ATR-FTIR results indicated that AuNPs could be well stabilized by PMBA due to the electron transfer between the N atoms of amide groups in the PMBA and Au atoms of AuNPs. The catalytic activity and thermoresponsive property of the new nanoreactor were invested by the reduction of the environmental pollutant, 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), with NaBH₄ as a reductant. It exhibited a higher catalytic activity at 20 °C and 30 °C (below LCST of PNIPAM), but an inhibited catalytic activity at 40 °C (above LCST of PNIPAM). The PNIPAM layer played a switching role in controlling the catalytic rate by altering the reaction temperature. In addition, this nanoreactor showed an easily recyclable property due to the existence of a silica core and also preserved a rather high catalytic efficiency after 16 times of recycling.
