Preparation of Ce⁻Mn Composite Oxides with Enhanced Catalytic Activity for Removal of Benzene through Oxalate Method

Promoted catalytic performance of Ag-Mn bimetal catalysts synthesized through reduction route

VOCs can exert great harm to both human and environment, and catalytic oxidation is believed to be an effective technique to eliminate these pollutants. In this paper, Ag-Mn bimetal catalysts with 10 wt.% of silver were synthesized using doping, impregnation, and reduction methods respectively, and then they were applied to the catalytic oxidation of benzene. Through series of characterizations it showed that the loading of silver using reduction method significantly resulted in improved physico-chemical properties of manganese oxides, such as larger surface area and pore volume, higher proportion of surface Mn3+ and Mn4+, stronger reducibility and more active of surface oxygen species, which were all beneficial to its catalytic activity. As a result, the Ag-Mn catalysts synthesized by reduction method showed a lower T90 value (equals to the temperature at which 90% of initial benzene was removed) of 203°C. Besides, both the used and fresh Ag-Mn catalysts synthesized by reduction method showed preferable stability in this research.

Unveiling the Surface Chemical Reactions during Multi-Phase Catalytic Oxidation of Soot on Nanoengineering/Interfacing/Doping-Prepared Mn-CeO2 Catalysts Using TG-MS and Operando DRIFTS-MS

The aerosol pyrolysis method from nitrate precursors was used to prepare the Mn-CeO2 catalyst containing Mn2O3, CeO2, and Mn-doped CeO2 nanoparticles for catalyzing carbonous soot oxidation. The prepared Mn-CeO2 catalysts have high specific surface areas, Ce3+ ratio, and oxygen vacancy defects; these are a benefit for soot oxidation. The T50 for soot oxidation on the 0.57Mn-CeO2 catalyst is as low as 355 °C, which is 329 °C lower than that for soot oxidation without a catalyst. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS, HRTEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, H2-TPR-MS, O2-TPD-MS, soot-TPR-MS, and operando DRIFTS-MS. The functions of Mn2O3, CeO2, and Mn-doped CeO2 in the 0.57Mn-CeO2 catalyst are unveiled. Mn-doped CeO2 plays a key role and CeO2 participates in soot oxidation, while Mn2O3 is used to enhance higher ratios of Ce3+, via the reaction of Mn3+ + Ce4+ = Mn4+ + Ce3+. The mechanism of soot oxidation on Mn-CeO2 was proposed.

The important role of the interaction between manganese minerals and metals in environmental remediation: a review

With illegal discharge of wastewater containing inorganic and organic pollutants, combined pollution is common and needs urgent attention. Understanding the migration and transformation laws of pollutants in the environment has important guiding significance for environmental remediation. Due to the characteristics of adsorption, oxidation, and catalysis, manganese minerals play important role in the environment fate of pollutants. This review summarizes the forms of interaction between manganese minerals and metals, the environmental importance of the interaction between manganese minerals and metals, and the contribution of this interaction in improving performance of Mn-based composite for environmental remediation. The literatures have indicated that the interactions between manganese minerals and metals involve in surface adsorption, lattice replacement, and formation of association minerals. The interaction between manganese minerals and metals plays an important role in environmental behavior of element and environmental significance of manganese minerals. The synergistic or antagonistic effect resulted from the interaction influence the purification of heavy metal and organism pollutant. The synergistic effect benefited from the coordination of adsorption and oxidation, convenient electron transfer, abundant oxygen vacancies, and fast migration of lattice oxygen. Based on the synergy, Mn-based composites have been widely used for environmental remediation. The synthesize methods of Mn-based composites mainly include homogeneous coprecipitation, chemical etching route, hydrothermal, homogeneous chelating sol-gel, and ethylene glycol reduction strategy. This review is helpful to fully understand the migration and transformation process of pollutants in the environment, expand the resource utilization of manganese minerals for environmental remediation.

Effect of oxygen vacancy and highly dispersed MnOx on soot combustion in cerium manganese catalyst

Cerium manganese bimetallic catalysts have become the focus of current research because of their excellent catalytic performance for soot combustion. Two series of cerium manganese catalysts (Na-free catalysts and Na-containing catalysts) were prepared by coprecipitation method and characterized using XRD, N₂ adsorption-desorption, SEM, Raman, XPS, H₂-TPR, O₂-TPD, Soot-TPR-MS and in situ IR. The effects of abundant oxygen vacancies and surface highly dispersed MnO_x on soot catalytic combustion of cerium manganese catalysts prepared by different precipitants were analyzed. The activity test results show that the active oxygen species released by a large number of oxygen vacancies in the cerium manganese catalyst are more favorable to the soot catalytic combustion than MnO_x which is highly dispersed on the surface of the catalyst and has good redox performance at low temperature. Because the catalytic effect of MnO_x on the surface of Na-free catalysts is more dependent on the contact condition between the catalyst and the soot, this phenomenon can be observed more easily under the loose contact condition than under the tight contact condition. The activity cycle test results show that these two series of catalysts show good stability and repeated use will hardly cause any deactivation of the catalysts.

Nanostructured manganese oxides as highly active catalysts for enhanced hydrolysis of bis(4-nitrophenyl)phosphate and catalytic decomposition of methanol

The nanostructured manganese oxides (MnOx) exhibited high catalytic activities for hydrolysis of phosphate diester-based substrate bis(4-nitrophenyl)phosphate and decomposition of methanol to carbon monoxide and hydrogen as a potential alternative fuel.

Catalytic activity of porous manganese oxides for benzene oxidation improved via citric acid solution combustion synthesis

Various manganese oxides (MnO_x) prepared via citric acid solution combustion synthesis were applied for catalytic oxidation of benzene. The results showed the ratios of citric acid/manganese nitrate in synthesizing process positively affected the physicochemical properties of MnO_x, e.g., BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area, porous structure, reducibility and so on, which were in close relationship with their catalytic performance. Of all the catalysts, the sample prepared at a citric acid/manganese nitrate ratio of 2:1 (C2M1) displayed the best catalytic activity with T₉₀ (the temperature when 90% of benzene was catalytically oxidized) of 212℃. Further investigation showed that C2M1 was Mn₂O₃ with abundant nano-pores, the largest surface area and the proper ratio of surface Mn⁴⁺/Mn³⁺, resulting in preferable low-temperature reducibility and abundant surface active adsorbed oxygen species. The analysis results of the in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (in-situ FTIR) revealed that the benzene was successively oxidized to phenolate, o-benzoquinone, small molecules (such as maleates, acetates, and vinyl), and finally transformed to CO₂ and H₂O.
