Abstract
The photocatalytic degradation of paracetamol (a common analgesic also known as acetaminophen) in ultrapure water with different photocatalytic systems was performed under ultraviolet or visible irradiation. The photocatalysts employed were: commercial Degussa-P25 TiO2 and Au-TiO2 under UVA irradiation (365 nm) and g-C3N4 and Au-g-C3N4 under visible light irradiation (low-power (4 × 10 W) white light LEDs), improving the effectiveness of degradation rates when the gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were combined with the semiconductors. The nanostructured photocatalysts were synthesised and characterised by transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and, in the case of g-C3N4 photocatalysts by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The influence of the pH in the depletion of paracetamol with g-C3N4 and visible light was evaluated. In addition, the stability and lifetime of the photocatalyst g-C3N4 in the degradation of paracetamol were studied.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is an attractive strategy for emerging pollutants remediation. Research towards the development of new, efficient and effective catalytic materials with high activity under wide irradiation spectra is a highly active sector in material science. Various semiconductor materials have been employed as photocatalysts, including TiO2, SrTiO3, CdS, BiVO4, Ta3N5, TaON, Ag3PO4, and g-C3N4. The latter is a metal-free, low cost polymer, providing high adsorption and catalytic properties, shown to be promising for photocatalysis applications under visible light. Furthermore, g-C3N4 composites are among the most promising advanced photocatalytical materials that can be produced by green synthesis processes. In this paper, the state-of-the-art of g-C3N4 applications is reviewed, and application perspectives are discussed. Photocatalysis tests with g-C3N4 under Xenon irradiation were performed to gather first-hand information to improve photoreactor design. Xenon light spectrum appears to be a suitable radiation source to replace direct sunlight in engineered pollutants removal processes catalyzed by g-C3N4, in lieu of other currently used heterogeneous photocatalysis processes (e.g., TiO2-UV). LED sources are also very promising due to higher energy efficiency and customizable, catalyzer-specific irradiation spectra.

Abstract
Heterogeneous photocatalysis premised on advanced oxidation processes has witnessed a broad application perspective, including water purification and environmental remediation. In particular, the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), an earth-abundant metal-free conjugated polymer, has acquired extensive application scope and interdisciplinary consideration owing to its outstanding structural and physicochemical properties. However, several issues such as the high recombination rate of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs, smaller specific surface area, and lower electrical conductivity curtail the catalytic efficacy of bulk g-C3N4. Another challenging task is separating the catalyst from the reaction medium, limiting their reusability and practical applications. Therefore, several methodologies are adopted strategically to tackle these issues. Attention is being paid, especially to the magnetic nanocomposites (NCs) based catalysts to enhance efficiency and proficient reusability property. This review summarizes the latest progress related to the design and development of magnetic g-C3N4-based NCs and their utilization in photocatalytic systems. The usefulness of the semiconductor heterojunctions on the catalytic activity, working mechanism, and degradation of pollutants are discussed in detail. The major challenges and prospects of using magnetic g-C3N4-based NCs for photocatalytic applications are highlighted in this report.

Predicting the trend and utility of different photocatalysts for degradation of pharmaceutically active compounds: A special emphasis on photocatalytic materials, modifications, and performance comparison. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2021; 293:112858. Abstract
The rapid rise in the healthcare sector has led to an increase in pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in different aqueous bodies. The toxicity of the PhACs and their ability to persist after conventional treatment processes have escalated research in the field of photocatalytic treatment. Although different photocatalysts have been successful in degrading PhACs, their inherent drawbacks have severely limited their application on a large scale. A substantial amount of research has been aimed at overcoming the high cost of the photocatalytic material, low quantum yield, the formation of toxic end products, etc. Hence, to further research in this field, researchers must have a fair idea of the current trends in the application of different photocatalysts. In this article, the trends in the use of various photocatalysts for the removal of different PhACs have been circumscribed. The performance of different groups of photocatalysts to degrade PhACs from synthetic and real wastewater has been addressed. The drawbacks and advantages of these materials have been compared, and their future in the field of PhACs removal has been predicted using S-curve analysis. Zinc and titanium-based photocatalysts were efficient under UV irradiation, while bismuth and graphene-based materials exhibited exemplary performance in visible light. However, iron-based compounds were found to have the most promising future, which may be because of their magnetic properties, easy availability, low bandgap, etc. Different modification techniques, such as morphology modification, doping, heterojunction formation, etc., have also been discussed. This study may help researchers to clarify the current research status in the field of photocatalytic treatment of PhACs and provide valuable information for future research.

Efficient solar removal of acetaminophen contaminant from water using flexible graphene composites functionalized with Ni@TiO 2:W nanoparticles. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2021; 290:112665. Abstract
This work presents the morphological, structural and photocatalytic properties of flexible graphene composites decorated with Ni@TiO2:W nanoparticles (TiNiW NPs) with an average size of 27 ± 2 nm. The TiNiW NPs were immobilized on the surface of a flexible graphene composite using a PVA-based slurry-paste (FG/TiNiW composite). The SEM study showed that the TiNiW NPs remained exposed on the surface of the FG/TiNiW composite, which benefited its photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic performance for the degradation of acetaminophen (ACT) was evaluated using both the TiNiW powders and the FG/TiNiW composite, obtaining maximum degradation efficiencies of 100 and 86%, respectively, after 3 h under natural solar irradiation. The degradation of ACT was caused mainly by the reactive oxygen species such as OH radicals and h+, which was confirmed by scavenger experiments. Photoluminescence, XPS and absorbance experiments revealed that oxygen vacancy defects were created by i) doping the TiNiW NPs with W and by ii) introducing graphene into the composites. These defects enhanced the absorbance of light in the range of 400-800 nm, which in turn, promoted the photocatalytic degradation of ACT. Moreover, the reuse experiments confirmed that both the TiNiW NPs and FG/TiNiW composite were very stable for the degradation of ACT, since degradation efficiencies >82% were obtained after 4 reuse cycles for both photocatalysts. The experimental findings of this work demonstrate that the flexible TiO2/graphene composites are a feasible option for the removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from water using natural solar irradiation.

Abstract
This study reports a facile fabrication of black TiO2-x /NiFe2O4 (Ti3+ self-doped titania coupled with nickel ferrite), an efficient sonocatalyst for ibuprofen (IBP) mitigation. Compared with TiO2-x or NiFe2O4, TiO2-x /NiFe2O4 heterojunction displayed higher sonocatalytic activity, and their immobilization onto diatomaceous earth further enhanced mitigation efficiency due to the synergy between adsorption and sonocatalysis. About 96.7% of 10 mg l-1 IBP was removed in 100 min using 0.7 g l-1 catalyst at pH = 6, with the ultrasonic power of 144 W and frequency of 60 KHz. Quenching experiment results demonstrated the roles of reactive species. The intermediates during IBP sono-oxidation were determined by HPLC-MS method, and the acute toxicity was evaluated. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism was proposed. The sonocatalyst revealed excellent reusability, suggesting itself promising for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
TiO2-NiO composite nanorods were synthesized by combining hydrothermal growth of TiO2 nanorods and sputtering deposition of NiO film. Crystalline NiO coverage films with various thicknesses were sputter coated onto TiO2 nanorods by controlling NiO sputtering duration. The crystallographic analyses demonstrate that crystalline rutile TiO2-cubic NiO composite nanorods were formed herein. In comparison with pristine TiO2 and NiO, the coverage of NiO crystals on the TiO2 nanorods led to an enhanced photodegradation activity of the TiO2-NiO composites towards Rhodamine B dyes under irradiation. Moreover, the TiO2-NiO composite nanorods with the adequate content of NiO coverage layer show superior gas-sensing responses to 25-200 ppm ammonia gas in comparison with those of the constituent counterparts. The experimental results herein demonstrate that decoration of NiO film on the surfaces of TiO2 nanorods with tunable coverage sizes via sputtering deposition is a promising approach to design TiO2-NiO composite nanorods with desirable functionalities.

Abstract
Composites of g-C3N4/TiO2 were one-step prepared using electron impact with dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma as the electron source. Due to the low operation temperature, TiO2 by the plasma method shows higher specific surface area and smaller particle size than that prepared via conventional calcination. Most interestingly, electron impact produces more oxygen vacancy on TiO2, which facilitates the recombination and formation of heterostructure of g-C3N4/TiO2. The composites have higher light absorption capacity and lower charge recombination efficiency. g-C3N4/TiO2 by plasma can produce hydrogen at a rate of 219.9 μmol·g-1·h-1 and completely degrade Rhodamine B (20mg·L-1) in two hours. Its hydrogen production rates were 3 and 1.5 times higher than that by calcination and pure g-C3N4, respectively. Electron impact, ozone and oxygen radical also play key roles in plasma preparation. Plasma has unique advantages in metal oxides defect engineering and the preparation of heterostructured composites with prospective applications as photocatalysts for pollutant degradation and water splitting.

Abstract
Copper-doped bismuth vanadate/graphitic carbon nitride (BiVO4/g-C3N4) nanocomposite materials were successfully fabricated using a sonochemical approach. Cu-doped BiVO4/g-C3N4 nanocomposite photocatalysts could improve electron/hole (e-/h+) pair separation, stability, and light-harvesting efficiency compared to pristine BiVO4 or g-C3N4, resulting in the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. The optimal parameters, such as pH value at 10, photocatalyst dosage of 0.4 g L-1, and 10 mol% Cu-doped BiVO4/g-C3N4 photocatalyst, were determined to degrade initial concentration of 20 ppm Bisphenol A, which could be completely removed after 90 min. Furthermore, the excessive doping of copper (> 10 mol%) could not synthesize the pure monoclinic scheelite phase, which substantially resulted in the reduction of the photocatalytic activity.

N-Doped Carbon-Coated ZnS with Sulfur-Vacancy Defect for Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity in the Visible Light Region. NANOMATERIALS 2019; 9:nano9121657. Abstract
In this work, N-doped carbon-coated ZnS with a sulfur-vacancy defect (ZnS@N-C) was performed for the visible-light-driven photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The obtained ZnS@N-C exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with ZnS for TCH removal. Among these ZnS@N-C composites, ZnS@N-C-3 with N-doped content of 3.01% (100 nm) presented the best visible-light photocatalytic activity and superior long-term photocatalytic stability after five cycle times for TCH removal in the visible light region. This may be ascribed to the interface between the N-doped carbon shell and ZnS with a sulfur-vacancy defect for efficient charge transfer and the restrained recombination of charge carriers. Electron spin resonance (ESR) results indicate that the ·O2‒ radical plays a crucial role in the enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZnS@N-C-3.
