Next Steps for Interventions Targeting Adolescent Dietary Behaviour

Perceived influences of fruit and vegetable consumption among Indian adolescents - A qualitative inquiry

BACKGROUND

Fruits and vegetables are primary sources of vitamins and minerals that may alleviate the risk of chronic illnesses. However, Indian adolescents consume inadequate amounts of fruits and vegetables, with less than 10% meeting recommendations. Micronutrient deficiencies are a major public health problem in India. For example, the prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia and Vitamin A deficiency in adolescents is 28.5% and 14.4%, respectively. To promote fruit and vegetable consumption among Indian adolescents, we need to identify the factors which may influence the consumption. The aim of this qualitative inquiry was to explore perceived influences of fruit and vegetable consumption among Indian adolescents.

METHODS

Using purposive sampling, adolescents aged 10-19 years were recruited from two public and two private (independent) schools in Varanasi, India. Face-to-face interviews along with the 'draw and tell' technique were used for data collection. Interviews were conducted in English as well as in Hindi depending on the preferences of the adolescents. The conversations were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcribed data were subjected to thematic analysis. Data were coded inductively, and themes were extracted using NVivo software program.

RESULTS

A total of 58 adolescents (53% female; 74% urban) with mean age 13.6 years completed the interviews. Nine major themes and associated sub-themes emerged, including: (i) Sensory properties (i.e., taste, color, flavor, texture); (ii) Health and immunity; (iii) Allergy; (iv) Home food environment (i.e., influence of mothers, availability and accessibility of fruits and vegetables); (v) Cost; (vi) Food preparation; (vii) Influence of peers; (viii) School food environment; (ix) Proclivity for energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods and beverages.

CONCLUSIONS

The emerging themes and sub-themes show that multiple factors are likely to affect fruit and vegetable consumption in adolescents, aligning with literature on adolescent fruit and vegetable consumption in international settings. Behavioral interventions should be designed to create enabling environments to encourage fruit and vegetable consumption in Indian adolescents by removing barriers at the individual, household, and community levels, thereby reducing the enduring prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies.

Dietary Intake of 14-15-Year-Old Faroese Adolescents by an Online Assessment Tool and Associations with Wellbeing and Health Behaviour

There is robust evidence linking diet and physical activity to major public health concerns such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. Dietary habits of children and adolescents are frequently discussed in health policy debates due to their modifiability, making them viable targets for prevention and health promotion initiatives. This study aimed to assess the dietary habits of 14-15-year-old Faroese adolescents using an online 24 h recall tool, examining their intake relative to public recommendations and exploring associations with health behaviour and wellbeing. A total of 78 participants (45 girls, 33 boys), with a mean age of 14.3 years, recorded their food intake and completed a questionnaire. Results indicated a higher intake of saturated fats and sugar and a lower intake of dietary fibre, n-3 fatty acids, fruits, and vegetables compared to recommendations. Healthier food intake was associated with better health behaviour and wellbeing. This very first study of Faroese adolescents' overall diet underscores the need for health-promoting interventions, and suggests the feasibility of using an online 24 h recall tool for dietary assessment in this age group, albeit with necessary adjustments for Faroese language and traditional foods.

Improving adolescents' dietary behaviours in the school-setting: challenges and opportunities

Adolescence is a critical time of physical, psychological and social development, and thus, optimal nutritional intakes are required during this life stage. Despite this, adolescence is recognised as a period of nutritional vulnerability, with many reportedly failing to meet current dietary guidelines. The school-setting presents a favourable environment to intervene and promote positive dietary behaviours and is also inclusive regardless of socio-economic status. However, a lack of consensus exists on how best to utilise schools to facilitate improvements in dietary behaviours among this age group. Whilst previous research has focused on identifying the factors motivating dietary choices within the school-setting, less is known on the optimum strategies to enhance these dietary choices which could positively contribute to the design of future interventions. It is reported that adolescents have good nutritional knowledge, although this does not appear to be a central consideration when making their dietary choices. Alternative factors at the individual (taste, visual appeal, familiarity, food quality, price, portion size, value for money, time/ convenience), social (peer influence), physical (product placement) and macro environment (food availability) levels have been frequently cited as important influences on adolescents' dietary choices in school. Although school-based interventions have shown potential in achieving positive dietary change among adolescents, more research is needed to determine the most effective methods in improving dietary behaviours in schools. This review summarises the key factors which influence adolescents' school-based dietary choices and the effectiveness of previously conducted interventions, identifying promising components for consideration when developing future dietary interventions within the school-setting.

The Mediating Effects of Food Content Watching Motivation on the between Watching Time and Nutrition Quotient of Adolescents in Seoul, Korea

Food-related content varies widely and is increasingly popular. Using various media, teenagers can easily access food content, which could affect they eating habits. This study was conducted to confirm the effects of watching motivation on the relationship between food content watching time and eating habits among adolescents in Seoul, Korea. Exactly 806 participants were surveyed about their food content watching status, including watching time and watching motivation. The Nutrition Quotient for adolescents (NQ-A) questionnaire was used to confirm eating habits. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to classify watching motivation’s subfactors. A parallel multimedia model was used to analyze the effect of watching motivation on the relationship between food content watching time and eating habits. As a result of this study, following the factor analysis, watching motivation was classified into information acquisition, emotional satisfaction, and enjoyment. The influence of food content watching time on NQ-A scores through information acquisition motivation was positively significant, whereas that through emotional satisfaction motivation was negatively significant. Enjoyment motivation did not indirectly affect the relationship between food content watching time and NQ-A scores. Hence, attention should be paid to these mediating factors when analyzing the relationship between watching food-related content and eating habits. Developing and distributing content that meets viewing motivations should help improve adolescents’ eating habits.

The Acceptability of Food Policies

We propose and test a model of food policy acceptability. The model is structured in four levels: government, topic, policy, and individual. In this study, we focus on two levels that are actionable for policy-makers: the topic and policy levels. We assess nine factors using a first online survey with 600 UK nationals and replicate our results in a second survey with 588 participants. Our results suggest that three factors have a positive effect on acceptability at the topic level: awareness of the issue, the legitimacy of state intervention, and social norms. At the policy level, we report a positive effect of the policy's expected effectiveness, its appropriate targeting of consumers, and the perceived support of the majority. On the other hand, more coercive interventions and those generating inequalities are judged to be less acceptable. Additionally, we report an interaction between awareness and coerciveness on acceptability. Participants who are aware of the issue were more likely to support coercive policies. We also find evidence for a trade-off between coerciveness, effectiveness, and acceptability, as more coercive measures are considered more effective, but less acceptable by participants. Our findings offer policy-makers, nutrition experts, and advocates for healthier and more sustainable diets a new and integrated understanding of the underlying factors that determine food policy acceptability.
