Abstract
Hyperglycemia is prevalent and closely associated with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). This study aimed to investigate the effects of hyperglycemia on the outcomes of PTB treatment. This study comprised 791 patients with PTB in total. Patients with fasting plasma glucose levels of ≥ 6.1 mmol/L were diagnosed with hyperglycemia. Anthropometric and baseline demographic data were also collected. The treatment response was assessed based on clinical symptoms (sputum production, cough, chest pain, fever, hemoptysis, night sweats, loss of appetite, and fatigue), sputum smear, chest computed tomography (CT), and adverse gastrointestinal responses (vomiting, nausea, abdominal distension, diarrhea, and constipation). A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used to evaluate these relationships. Hyperglycemia affected 266 (33.6%) of the 791 patients with PTB. In GEE analyses, patients with hyperglycemia exhibited a greater incidence of elevated tuberculosis (TB) scores (odds ratio (OR) 1.569; 95% CI 1.040-2.369), cough (OR 1.332; 95% CI 1.050-1.690), and night sweats (OR 1.694; 95% CI 1.288-2.335). Hyperglycemia was linked with a higher risk of positive sputum smears (OR 1.941; 95% CI 1.382-2.727). During therapy, hyperglycemia was also associated with an increased incidence of vomiting (OR 2.738; 95% CI 1.041-7.198), abdominal distension (OR 2.230; 95% CI 1.193-4.171), and constipation (OR 2.372; 95% CI 1.442-3.902). However, the CT results indicated that hyperglycemia did not affect pulmonary lesions in patients with TB. Patients with TB and hyperglycemia are at a higher risk of severe clinical manifestations, positive sputum smears, and adverse gastrointestinal effects and, therefore, the special situation of hyperglycemic patients should be considered in the prevention and treatment of TB.

Abstract
Objective To assess the associations between self-efficacy, nutrition literacy and eating behavior, and to examine if nutrition literacy mediates the relationship between self-efficacy and eating behavior in young tuberculosis patients. Methods This cross-sectional study used a convenience sampling strategy to select 230 young tuberculosis patients at the Second Hospital of Nanjing (Public Health Medical Center of Nanjing), China, from June 2022 to August 2022. The data were collected using a demographic data form, the Eating Behavior Scale, the Food and Nutrition Literacy Questionnaire and the Tuberculosis Self-Efficacy Scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson bivariate correlation analysis, Pearson partial correlation analysis, hierarchical multiple regression, and mediation analysis were conducted in the study. Results The mean self-efficacy score for young tuberculosis patients was 92.56 (SD = 9.89, range = 21 ∼ 105). The average nutrition literacy score for young tuberculosis patients was 68.24(SD = 6.75, range = 0 ∼ 100). The bivariate correlation analysis and partial correlation analysis found that self-efficacy was positively correlated with nutrition literacy (P < 0.01). The regression analysis showed that self-efficacy (F = 5.186, β = 0.233, P < 0.001)and nutrition literacy (F = 7.749, β = 0.545, P < 0.001) significantly predicted eating behavior. The three dimensions of nutrition literacy including nutritional knowledge (mediation effect ratio = 13.1%, 95% CI = - 0.089; -0.005), preparing food (mediation effect ratio = 17.4%, 95 %CI = 0.011; 0.077) and eating (mediation effect ratio = 54.7%, 95 %CI = 0.070; 0.192) mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and eating behavior in young tuberculosis patients. Conclusion Nutrition literacy mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and eating behavior. To promote healthy eating behavior among young tuberculosis patients, interventions aimed at improving self-efficacy and nutrition literacy should be conducted.

Abstract
The ability of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) to induce bacteriostasis in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) and their roles in regulating the pathogenic activities of immune cells have been reported previously, but the specific mechanisms underlying these regulatory functions remain unclear. This work aimed to determine how ZnONPs play the antibacterial role against M. tb. In vitro activity assays were employed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the ZnONPs against various strains of M. tb (BCG, H37Rv, and clinical susceptible MDR and XDR strains). The ZnONPs had MICs of 0.5-2 mg/L against all tested isolates. In addition, changes in the expression levels of autophagy and ferroptosis-related markers in BCG-infected macrophages exposed to ZnONPs were measured. BCG-infected mice that were administered ZnONPs were used to determine the ZnONPs functions in vivo. ZnONPs decreased the number of bacteria engulfed by the macrophages in a dose-dependent manner, while different doses of ZnONPs also affected inflammation in different directions. Although ZnONPs enhanced the BCG-induced autophagy of macrophages in a dose-dependent manner, only low doses of ZnONPs activated autophagy mechanisms by increasing the levels of pro-inflammatory factors. The ZnONPs also enhanced BCG-induced ferroptosis of macrophages at high doses. Co-administration of a ferroptosis inhibitor with the ZnONPs improved the anti-Mycobacterium activity of ZnONPs in an in vivo mouse model and alleviated acute lung injury caused by ZnONPs. Based on the above findings, we conclude that ZnONPs may act as potential antibacterial agents in future animal and clinical studies.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB), caused by the bacillus M. tuberculosis, is one of the deadliest infectious illnesses of our day, along with HIV and malaria.Chemotherapy, the cornerstone of TB control efforts, is jeopardized by the advent of M. tuberculosis strains resistant to many, if not all, of the existing medications.Isoniazid (INH), rifampicin (RIF), pyrazinamide, and ethambutol are used to treat drug-susceptible TB for two months, followed by four months of INH and RIF, but chemotherapy with potentially harmful side effects is sometimes needed to treat multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB for up to two years. Chemotherapy might be greatly shortened by drugs that kill M. tuberculosis more quickly while simultaneously limiting the emergence of drug resistance.Regardless of their intended target, bactericidal medicines commonly kill pathogenic bacteria (gram-negative and gram-positive) by producing hydroxyl radicals via the Fenton reaction.Researchers have concentrated on vitamins with bactericidal properties to address the rising cases globally and have discovered that these vitamins are effective when given along with first-line drugs. The presence of elevated iron content, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and DNA damage all contributed to VC's sterilizing action on M. tb in vitro. Moreover, it has a pleiotropic effect on a variety of biological processes such as detoxification, protein folding - chaperons, cell wall processes, information pathways, regulatory, virulence, metabolism etc.In this review report, the authors extensively discussed the effects of VC on M. tb., such as the generation of free radicals and bactericidal mechanisms with existing treatments, and their further drug development based on ROS production.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the diet quality of tuberculosis patients and healthy adults by using the China Healthy Diet Index (CHDI) and to provide guidance for the diet of tuberculosis patients in the future. METHODS A case-control study of 1241 patients and 1241 healthy individuals matchedfor sex and age. The CHDI was used to score the overall diet quality of patients in the casegroup and the control group. RESULTS The CHDI score of tuberculosis patients was 61.61 and that of healthy controls was 63.97. After adjustment for confounders, participants with >80 on CHDI were 73.5% less likely to develop tuberculosis than participants with <51 (OR: 0.265, 95% CI: 0.086, 0.813, p < 0.05). In the original model, the CHDI scores in the highest range were inversely associated with tuberculosis risk compared with the lowest range (OR: 0.687, 95% CI: 0.420,1.122, p < 0.001). After adjusting for confounders, the CHDI score was significantly associated with a reduced risk of tuberculosis (OR: 0.265, 95% CI: 0.086, 0.813, p < 0.001). After adjusting for confounders, a high-quality diet was positively correlated with anti-tuberculosis treatment outcomes (OR:0.957, 95% CI: 0.918,0.998, p = 0.039). CONCLUSION Compared with healthy adults, tuberculosis patients have poor diet quality with unreasonable diet structure. The insufficient intake of whole grains, vegetables, beans, aquatic products, meat and eggs and the excessive intake of pure energy food and solid fat suggests that the dietary structure of tuberculosis patients was unreasonable. This study provides an idea of the diet structure of tuberculosis patients.

Abstract
Vitamins may play an important role in preventing tuberculosis. The purpose of this work is to associate the vitamin A, C, D and E status with tuberculosis through a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. Web of Science, Pubmed and Scopus were searched from the earliest date of the database to May 2021. The standardized mean differences (SMDs) of blood vitamin concentrations and odds ratios (ORs) of vitamin deficiency between the tuberculosis patients and the control subjects were used as the main effect sizes. The effect sizes were pooled by a random-effects model using the Stata software (Version 11). The vitamin A concentration was significantly lower in the tuberculosis group than in the control group [SMD (95% CI): -0.96 (-1.31, -0.61), p < 0.01]. Only two case-control studies reported the vitamin C concentrations in the tuberculosis group versus the control group, and the difference was not significant. The blood vitamin D concentration was significantly lower in the tuberculosis group than in the control group [SMD (95% CI): -0.53 (-0.75, -0.32), p < 0.01]. Consistently, the number of people with vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in the tuberculosis group [OR (95% CI): 2.29 (1.55, 3.37), p < 0.01]. The vitamin E concentration was significantly lower in the tuberculosis group than in the control group [SMD (95% CI): -0.34 (-0.61, -0.08), p = 0.01]. The current meta-analysis suggested a negative association between the vitamin A, D and E status and tuberculosis, and the association between the vitamin C status and tuberculosis was inconclusive due to the limited studies available.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a serious disease burden worldwide, and its effective early diagnosis is still facing challenges. Knowledge, acquired from multi-omics integration analysis about the association between different types of differentially expressed molecules in the plasma of TB patients and the disease traits, is anticipated to improve the accuracy of TB diagnosis through the "integrative pattern". METHODS In this study, the lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA interaction network was constructed based on the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) hypothesis by integrating our previous data sets of lncRNA, mRNA, miRNA, and metabolites. Moreover, the key regulatory axis was established by co-expression analysis and verified at the level of metabolites. RESULTS A ceRNA regulatory network consisting of 23 lncRNAs, 10 miRNAs, and 113 mRNAs was constructed. The analysis results suggested that lncRNA (OSBPL10-AS1), miRNA (has-miR-485-5p), and mRNA (SLC23A2) might be involved in the regulation of vitamin metabolism in patients with TB. Metabolite analysis showed that compared with the normal control group, TB patients had abnormal vitamin metabolism, and the expression levels of pyridoxal phosphate, pyridoxamine phosphate, and folic acid were significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Integrated multi-omics analysis showed that vitamin metabolism disorder may be one of the pathological characteristic of TB. OSBPL10-AS1, hsa-miR-485-5p, SLC23A2, pyridoxal phosphate, pyridoxamine phosphate, and folic acid may collectively constitute the "integrative pattern" of multiple biomarkers, which may provide an accurate diagnosis of TB.

Abstract
Introduction: The relationship between nutrition and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases is logically proven. Nutrition affects the immune system and the health of the organs. Inadequate dietary intake endangers the immune system, which itself increases susceptibility to disease and often culminates in active disease. The disease then reduces the body’s appetite and ability to absorb nutrients, and the cycle continues. Considering the importance of the role of nutrition in the health of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, this current review aimed to discuss the different diets and their effects on tuberculosis (TB) prevention in HIV patients. Method and Materials: The present study evaluates the important points related to AIDS and the prevention and treatment of this disease by considering the diet and known scientific cases during the last 10 years, in simple terms, the prevalence of this disease. Result: Articles were searched by valid databases in May 2021. The findings showed that in addition to malnutrition, the high prevalence of infectious diseases can have serious consequences for public health. Many people will be safe from getting infections if there are safe and effective interventions for many of these infectious diseases. Conclusion: Based on the information presented herein, it is clear that TB affects the nutritional status. Many patients with active TB experience severe weight loss, and many people with the symptoms show a lack of vitamins and minerals.

Abstract
(1) Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world's top infectious killers, in fact every year 10 million people fall ill with TB and 1.5 million people die from TB. Vitamins have an important role in vital functions, due to their anti-oxidant, pro-oxidant, anti-inflammatory effects and to metabolic functions. The aim of this review is to discuss and summarize the evidence and still open questions regarding vitamin supplementation as a prophylactic measure in those who are at high risk of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection and active TB; (2) Methods: We conducted a search on PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and WHO websites starting from March 1950 to September 2021, in order to identify articles discussing the role of Vitamins A, B, C, D and E and Tuberculosis; (3) Results: Supplementation with multiple micronutrients (including zinc) rather than vitamin A alone may be more beneficial in TB. The WHO recommend Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) when high-dose isoniazid is administered. High concentrations of vitamin C sterilize drug-susceptible, MDR and extensively drug-resistant MTB cultures and prevent the emergence of drug persisters; Vitamin D suppresses the replication of mycobacterium in vitro while VE showed a promising role in TB management as a result of its connection with oxidative balance; (4) Conclusions: Our review suggests and encourages the use of vitamins in TB patients. In fact, their use may improve outcomes by helping both nutritionally and by interacting directly and/or indirectly with MTB. Several and more comprehensive trials are needed to reinforce these suggestions.

Adjunctive vitamin A and D for the glycaemic control in patients with concurrent type 2 diabetes and tuberculosis: a randomised controlled trial. Br J Nutr 2021; 127:556-562. Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of vitamin A, D and their interaction on the glycaemic control in patients with both diabetes and tuberculosis. Tuberculosis infection and its treatment induce hyperglycaemia and complicate the glycaemic control in patients with diabetes. A randomised controlled trial with a 2 × 2 factorial design was conducted in a tuberculosis-specialised hospital in Qingdao, China. A total of 279 patients who have both diabetes and tuberculosis were included in this analysis. The patients received standard anti-tuberculosis treatment alone (control group), or together with a dose of vitamin A (600 μg RAE/d) or vitamin D (10 μg/d) or a combination of vitamin A (600 μg RAE/d) and vitamin D (10 μg/d) for 2 months. The effects of the intervention on fasting plasma glucose and 2-h postprandial blood glucose were investigated by ANCOVA. The analysis was adjusted for baseline values, age, sex, smoking, drinking and antidiabetic treatment as covariates. No significant effect was observed for vitamin A and D supplementation on fasting plasma glucose, 2-h postprandial blood glucose, BMI and related blood parameters. No interaction was observed between vitamin A and D supplementation for these endpoints. Vitamin A and D supplementation showed a null effect on the glycaemic control for patients with concurrent diabetes and tuberculosis. Future work should evaluate the effect of vitamin A and D supplementation on insulin-related indices for these patients and investigate the effect of vitamin D receptor genotypes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Vitamins A and D provided protection from xenobiotic-induced liver injury in previous animal studies. We conducted a post hoc analysis of our previous randomized controlled trial to investigate the effects of vitamin A and D supplementation on tuberculosis-drug-induced liver injury. METHODS The trial was conducted in a hospital in Qingdao, China, from October 2012 to March, 2015. The control group received only tuberculosis treatment. The vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamins A & D groups received, respectively, additional supplementation of 2000 IU/d vitamin A, 400 IU/d vitamin D, and a combination of 2000 IU/d vitamin A and 400 IU/d vitamin D. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and cholinesterase were monitored throughout the treatment. Liver injury was defined as ALT or AST three times higher than the upper limit of normal, which was defined for AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and cholinesterase, respectively, as 40 U/L, 40 U/L, 150 U/L, 40 U/L, and 10 500 U/L. RESULTS Among the 753 participants, 11% exhibited liver injury. No significant effect of vitamin A or D supplementation was observed on the incidence of liver injury or on elevated liver indices including ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and cholinesterase. The interaction between vitamin A and D supplementation was not significant. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin A and D supplementation did not protect against tuberculosis-drug-induced liver injury. Future work should evaluate the effects of higher dosages of vitamins A and D and the effects of different genotypes for vitamin A and D metabolic enzymes or receptors.
