Abstract
Low-oxalate diets are useful for treating hyperoxaluria in nephrolithiasis patients. This study was unique in examining how a low-oxalate diet in addition to a standard diet affected hyperoxaluria and renal function tests in nephrolithiasis patients. The effects of a low-oxalate diet were analyzed by different biochemical tests, that is, anthropometric measurements, blood oxalate test, renal function test, electrolyte profile test, and 24 h urine analysis. For this purpose, 112 patients were divided into 2 groups: Group T1 (Conventional diet) and Group T2 (Low-Oxalate diet) for 8 weeks. Each group was tested at the initiation and end of the study. Using SPSS, the obtained data from each parameter were statistically analyzed. The results showed that a low-oxalate diet had a positive effect on patients suffering from nephrolithiasis. Furthermore, after treatment, anthropometric measurement weight (kg) among the control group (T1) was 100.45 ± 5.65 and the treatment group (T2) was 79.71 ± 9.48 kg. The effect of low-oxalate diet on renal function test: creatinine (g/d) among T1 was 2.08 ± 0.86 and T2 was 1.17 ± 0.13, uric acid(mg/d) among T1 was 437.04 ± 24.20 and T2 was 364.61 ± 35.99, urinary oxalate (mg/d) among T1 was 76.84 ± 10.33 and T2 was 39.24 ± 1.51, respectively. Sodium (mEq/d) among T1 was 156.72 ± 6.37 and T2 was 159.84 ± 6.31, potassium (mEq/d) among T1 was 69.91 ± 15.37 and T2 was 89.21 ± 6.31, phosphorus (g/d) among T1 was 0.96 ± 0.07 and T2 was 0.34 ± 0.27, respectively. This study demonstrated that nephrolithiasis patients with hyperoxaluria benefit from low-oxalate diets. Hyperoxaluria patients should eat a low-oxalate diet to use oxalate without affecting metabolism and eliminate it from the kidney without stones.

Kang C. Lumasiran: A Review in Primary Hyperoxaluria Type 1. Drugs 2024; 84:219-226. Abstract
Lumasiran (Oxlumo®), a first-in-class synthetic, double-stranded, ribonucleic acid (RNA) interference molecule targeting glycolate oxidase through silencing HAO1 mRNA, is approved in several countries for patients of any age and stage of kidney function with primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1). Approval was based on results from the phase III ILLUMINATE trials. In the double-blind, placebo-controlled, ILLUMINATE-A trial, subcutaneous lumasiran was significantly more effective than placebo in reducing 24-h urinary oxalate excretion in patients aged ≥ 6 years with PH1; this effect was sustained for ≥ 36 months in ongoing longer-term analyses. In the single-arm ILLUMINATE-B trial, lumasiran reduced urinary oxalate:creatinine ratios and plasma oxalate levels in patients aged < 6 years with PH1. In the single-arm ILLUMINATE-C trial, lumasiran reduced plasma oxalate levels in patients with PH1 receiving dialysis as well as those not receiving dialysis. In secondary and exploratory analyses of these trials, nephrocalcinosis grade, kidney stone event rates and estimated glomerular filtration rates were either stable or improved with lumasiran. Lumasiran had an acceptable tolerability profile that remained consistent in longer-term analyses; the most common adverse events were mild and transient injection-site reactions. Thus, lumasiran is an effective treatment option, with an acceptable tolerability profile, in patients with PH1.

Abstract
Accurate information regarding oxalate levels in foods is essential for managing patients with hyperoxaluria, oxalate nephropathy, or those susceptible to calcium oxalate stones. This study aimed to assess the reliability of chatbots in categorizing foods based on their oxalate content. We assessed the accuracy of ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, Bard AI, and Bing Chat to classify dietary oxalate content per serving into low (<5 mg), moderate (5-8 mg), and high (>8 mg) oxalate content categories. A total of 539 food items were processed through each chatbot. The accuracy was compared between chatbots and stratified by dietary oxalate content categories. Bard AI had the highest accuracy of 84%, followed by Bing (60%), GPT-4 (52%), and GPT-3.5 (49%) (p < 0.001). There was a significant pairwise difference between chatbots, except between GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 (p = 0.30). The accuracy of all the chatbots decreased with a higher degree of dietary oxalate content categories but Bard remained having the highest accuracy, regardless of dietary oxalate content categories. There was considerable variation in the accuracy of AI chatbots for classifying dietary oxalate content. Bard AI consistently showed the highest accuracy, followed by Bing Chat, GPT-4, and GPT-3.5. These results underline the potential of AI in dietary management for at-risk patient groups and the need for enhancements in chatbot algorithms for clinical accuracy.

Abstract
Oxalate is an antinutrient present in a wide range of foods, with plant products, especially green leafy vegetables, being the main sources of dietary oxalates. This compound has been largely associated with hyperoxaluria, kidney stone formation, and, in more severe cases, systematic oxalosis. Due to its impact on human health, it is extremely important to control the amount of oxalate present in foods, particularly for patients with kidney stone issues. In this review, a summary and discussion of the current knowledge on oxalate analysis, its extraction conditions, specific features of analytical methods, reported occurrence in foods, and its health implications are presented. In addition, a brief conclusion and further perspectives on whether high-oxalate foods are truly problematic and can be seen as health threats are shown.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The kidney is particularly vulnerable to toxins due to its abundant blood supply, active tubular reabsorption, and medullary interstitial concentration. Currently, calcium phosphate-induced and calcium oxalate-induced nephropathies are the most common crystalline nephropathies. Hyperoxaluria may lead to kidney stones and progressive kidney disease due to calcium oxalate deposition leading to oxalate nephropathy. Hyperoxaluria can be primary or secondary. Primary hyperoxaluria is an autosomal recessive disease that usually develops in childhood, whereas secondary hyperoxaluria is observed following excessive oxalate intake or reduced excretion, with no difference in age of onset. Oxalate nephropathy may be overlooked, and the diagnosis is often delayed or missed owning to the physician's inadequate awareness of its etiology and pathogenesis. Herein, we discuss the pathogenesis of hyperoxaluria with two case reports, and our report may be helpful to make appropriate treatment plans in clinical settings in the future. CASE PRESENTATION We report two cases of acute kidney injury, which were considered to be due to oxalate nephropathy in the setting of purslane (portulaca oleracea) ingestion. The two patients were elderly and presented with oliguria, nausea, vomiting, and clinical manifestations of acute kidney injury requiring renal replacement therapy. One patient underwent an ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, which showed acute tubulointerstitial injury and partial tubular oxalate deposition. Both patients underwent hemodialysis and were discharged following improvement in creatinine levels. CONCLUSIONS Our report illustrates two cases of acute oxalate nephropathy in the setting of high dietary consumption of purslane. If a renal biopsy shows calcium oxalate crystals and acute tubular injury, oxalate nephropathy should be considered and the secondary causes of hyperoxaluria should be eliminated.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant global public health concern associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. The maintenance of oxalate homeostasis plays a critical role in preserving kidney health, particularly in the context of CKD. Although the relationship between oxalate and kidney stone formation has been extensively investigated, our understanding of oxalate homeostasis in non-stone-forming CKD remains limited. This review aims to present an updated analysis of the existing literature, focusing on the intricate mechanisms involved in oxalate homeostasis in patients with CKD. Furthermore, it explores the key factors that influence oxalate accumulation and discusses the potential role of oxalate in CKD progression and prognosis. The review also emphasizes the significance of the gut-kidney axis in CKD oxalate homeostasis and provides an overview of current therapeutic strategies, as well as potential future approaches. By consolidating important findings and perspectives, this review offers a comprehensive understanding of the present knowledge in this field and identifies promising avenues for further research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to investi-gate the association between the urinary metabolic milieu and kidney stone recurrence with a validated papillary evaluation score (PPLA). MATERIALS AND METHODS We prospectively enrolled 30 stone for-mers who underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery procedures. Visual inspection of the accessible renal papillae was performed to calculate PPLA score, based on the characterization of ductal plugging, surface pitting, loss of papillary contour and Randall's plaque extension. Stone compositions, 24h urine collections and kidney stone events during follow-up were collected. Relative supersaturation ratios (RSS) for calcium oxalate (CaOx), brushite and uric acid were calculated using EQUIL-2. PPLA score > 3 was defined as high. RESULTS Median follow-up period was 11 months (5, 34). PPLA score was inversely correlated with BMI (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.38, 0.91, p = 0.018), type 2 diabetes (OR 0.04, 95% CI 0.003, 0.58, p = 0.018) and history of recurrent kidney stones (OR 0.17, 95%CI 0.04, 0.75, p = 0.019). The associations between PPLA score, diabetes and BMI were not confirmed after excluding patients with uric acid stones. Higher PPLA score was associated with lower odds of new kidney stone events during follow-up (OR 0.15, 95% CI 0.02, 1.00, p = 0.05). No other significant correla-tions were found. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm the lack of efficacy of PPLA score in phenotyping patients affected by kidney stone disease or in predicting the risk of stone recurrence. Larger, long-term studies need to be performed to clarify the role of PPLA on the risk of stone recurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kidney stone disease has a high prevalence worldwide of approximately 10% of the population and is characterized by a high recurrence rate. Kidney stone disease results from a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle risk factors, and the dissection of these factors is complex. METHODS The Swiss Kidney Stone Cohort (SKSC) is an investigator-initiated prospective, multicentric longitudinal, observational study in patients with kidney stones followed with regular visits over a period of 3 years after inclusion. Ongoing follow-ups by biannual telephone interviews will provide long-term outcome data. SKSC comprises 782 adult patients (age >18 years) with either recurrent stones or a single stone event with at least one risk factor for recurrence. In addition, a control cohort of 207 individuals without kidney stone history and absence of kidney stones on a low-dose CT scan at enrolment has also been recruited. SKSC includes extensive collections of clinical data, biochemical data in blood and 24-h urine samples, and genetic data. Biosamples are stored at a dedicated biobank. Information on diet and dietary habits was collected through food frequency questionnaires and standardized recall interviews by trained dieticians with the Globodiet software. CONCLUSION SKSC provides a unique opportunity and resource to further study cause and course of kidney disease in a large population with data and samples collected of a homogeneous collective of patients throughout the whole Swiss population.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explain the pathophysiology of kidney stone formation and appropriate dietary recommendations in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) and after bariatric surgery, focusing on the current literature. METHODS A narrative review methodology was performed. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. Studies on the relationship between IBD or bariatric surgery and the risk of kidney stone formation were included. RESULTS Dietary composition has a critical role in urinary stone formation. Nutritional factors such as fluid intake, dietary protein, carbohydrates, oxalate, and calcium contribute to the risk of stone formation. Bowel-related malabsorptive conditions (IBD, after bariatric surgery, etc.) are associated with an increased risk of kidney stone formation due to metabolic and physiological changes such as hyperoxaluria, hypocitraturia, and decreased fluid intake or absorption. While the risk is lower in restrictive bariatric surgeries, the risk of kidney stone formation increases, especially after malabsorptive procedures. Dietary recommendations for these patients could profit alleviate urinary changes and reduce the risk of kidney stones. CONCLUSION Bowel-related malabsorptive conditions such as IBD and bariatric surgery are associated with an increased risk of kidney stones. Appropriate dietary recommendations can improve urinary metabolic changes and reduce kidney stone formation and the possibility of stone-related surgery.

Abstract
Background The potential effects of dietary oxalate (Ox) intake on cardio-renal function have remained unestablished. We evaluated the effect of usual Ox intake and its interaction with dietary calcium (Ca) on incident hypertension (HTN) and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Methods Adult men and women, free of HTN and CKD at baseline (2006–2008), were recruited. Dietary intakes were assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and the outcomes were documented up to 2014–2017. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to estimate the development of HTN and CKD in relation to Ox intakes. Repeated-measures generalized estimating equation (GEE) linear regression models were used to assess possible effect of Ox-intake on the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and blood pressure levels over eight years.
Results Dietary Ox intakes were positively associated with incident CKD (HR = 2.59, 95% CI = 1.46–4.64) and HTN (HR = 1.79, 95% CI = 1.05–3.04). Compared to high-Ca consumers, subjects who had lower Ca intakes (< 990 vs. 1580 mg/d) had a higher incidence of CKD and HTN (HR = 2.43, 95% CI = 1.06–5.55, and HR = 1.72, 95% CI = 0.76–3.78). Participants with higher intakes of Ox (> 220 vs. < 150 mg/d) had lower eGFR values (75.3, 95% CI = 75.0–76.5 vs. 77.3, 95% CI = 76.6–78.1 mL/min/1.73m2, Ptime×group = 0.004) and higher SBP levels (112, 95% CI = 111–113 vs. 109, 95% CI = 108–110 mmHg, Ptime×group = 0.007) overtime.
Conclusion Higher dietary Ox intake may increase the risk of HTN and CKD. The relation between dietary Ox and risk of HTN and CKD seems to be varied by Ca intake, and subjects with lower Ca intakes may be more burdened by excessive amounts of dietary Ox.

Abstract
Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), of the Pedaliaceae family, is one of the first oil crops used in humans. It is widely grown and has a mellow flavor and high nutritional value, making it very popular in the diet. Sesame seeds are rich in protein and lipids and have many health benefits. A number of in vitro and in vivo studies and clinical trials have found sesame seeds to be rich in lignan-like active ingredients. They have antioxidant, cholesterol reduction, blood lipid regulation, liver and kidney protection, cardiovascular system protection, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and other effects, which have great benefits to human health. In addition, the aqueous extract of sesame has been shown to be safe for animals. As an important medicinal and edible homologous food, sesame is used in various aspects of daily life such as food, feed, and cosmetics. The health food applications of sesame are increasing. This paper reviews the progress of research on the nutritional value, chemical composition, pharmacological effects, and processing uses of sesame to support the further development of more functionalities of sesame.

Abstract
BackgroundAcute oxalate nephropathy (AON) is an uncommon condition that causes acute kidney injury (AKI), characterized by the massive deposition of calcium oxalate crystals in the renal parenchyma. In previous studies, urinary oxalate excretion has been found to be increased in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Here, we report a case series of diabetic patients with AKI with biopsy-proven AON, aiming to alert physicians to the potential of AON as a trigger of AKI in diabetic patients in clinical practice.Materials and methodsCases with pathological diagnosis of AON who presented with AKI clinically and had DM between January 2016 and December 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Their clinical and pathological manifestations, treatment, and prognosis were collected.ResultsSix male patients with biopsy-proven AON out of a total of 5,883 native kidney biopsies were identified, aged 58.3 ± 9.1 years at the time of kidney biopsy. Only one patient who had received Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery took oxalate-rich food before the onset of the disease. None of them had clinical features of enteric malabsorption. Three patients were currently on renin-angiotensin system inhibitor treatment for hypertension, and 5 of them received non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Three patients presented with oliguria and 4 patients needed dialysis at the beginning with none requiring dialysis at discharge. Four patients received a course of corticosteroid treatment empirically. Among them, two patients had estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) recovered to over 60 ml/min/1.73 m2, while the other two patients remained with kidney dysfunction at the last follow-up. In two patients without corticosteroid treatment, one patient fully recovered with eGFR over 90 ml/min/1.73 m2 and the other patient remained with kidney dysfunction at the last follow-up.ConclusionAON might be a rare but potentially trigger of AKI in patients with DM. A kidney biopsy could help physicians to make the correct diagnosis. The proper treatment to alleviate oxalate-induced injury needs to be further studied.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to characterize the pathophysiological changes of hydronephrosis caused by ureteral calculi obstruction in a new rabbit ureteral calculi model by implanting flowable resin. METHODS Forty New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into two groups: the calculi group and the sham control group. In the calculi group (n = 20), rabbits were operated at left lower abdomen and the left ureter was exposed. Then flowable resin (flowable restorative dental materials) was injected into the left ureter using a 0.45 mm diameter intravenous infusion needle. Then light-cured for 40 s by means of a dental curing light to form calculi. In the sham control group, normal saline was injected into the ureter. Rabbits underwent X-ray and routine blood and urine tests preoperatively, as well as X-ray, CT, dissection, HE staining and routine blood and urine tests on 1, 3, 5 and 7 days postoperatively. Stone formation was assessed by X-ray and unenhanced CT scan after surgery. The pathophysiological changes were evaluated through dissection, HE staining and routine blood and urine tests. RESULTS Ureteral calculi models were successfully constructed in 17 rabbits. In calculi group, high-density shadows were observed in the left lower abdomen on postoperative day 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th by X-ray and CT scan. Dissection found obstruction formation of the left ureters, dilatation of the renal pelvis and upper ureter during 7 days after surgery. The renal long-diameters of the left ureters increased only on the 1st postoperative day. HE staining found ureteral and kidney damage after surgery. In calculi group and sham group,the serum creatinine, urea nitrogen, white blood cells and urine red blood cells were raised at day 1 after surgery. However, the indicators returned to normal at day 3, 5, and 7. CONCLUSIONS This is a stable, less complicated operation and cost-effective ureteral calculi model by implanting flowable resin. And this novel model may allow us to further understand the pathophysiology changes caused by ureteral calculi obstruction.

Abstract
Background and aim The potential cardiovascular impact of usual intakes of oxalate (Ox) is uninvestigated. We evaluated the effect of dietary Ox and its interaction with dietary calcium (Ca) on incident cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods We included 2966 adult men and women aged 19–84 y without known CVD during baseline enrollment (2006–2008) of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. Dietary intakes were assessed using a validated FFQ, and incident CVD (i.e., coronary heart disease, stroke, and CVD mortality) were documented through March 2018. Results A 7.1% incident of CVD occurred during a median follow-up of 10.6 y. After multivariable adjustment for traditional risk factors and key dietary nutrients, including total fat and fiber, Ox intakes ≥220 mg/d increased incident CVD (HR T3 vs. T1 = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.02–2.12). This association was potentiated (HR T3 vs. T1 = 2.42, 95% CI = 1.19–4.89) in subjects who had a lower intake of Ca (< 981 mg/d); in a low-Ca diet, an even lower amount of dietary Ox (second tertile, 148–220 mg/d) was related to increased CVD events by 92% (HR = 1.92, 95% CI = 1.00–3.70). No association was observed between dietary Ox and CVD events in the presence of medium- and high levels of Ca intakes. The critical cut-off point of Ox-to-Ca for predicting CVD events was 0.14, which was related to an increased risk of CVD by 37% (HR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.02–1.84). Conclusion Higher dietary Ox intake appeared to be associated with a modestly elevated risk of incident CVD, especially in a diet with a lower amount of Ca.

Abstract
Spinach is a nutritious leafy vegetable belonging to the family Chenopodiaceae. Here we report a high-quality chromosome-scale reference genome assembly of spinach and genome resequencing of 305 cultivated and wild spinach accessions. Reconstruction of ancestral Chenopodiaceae karyotype indicates substantial genome rearrangements in spinach after its divergence from ancestral Chenopodiaceae, coinciding with high repeat content in the spinach genome. Population genomic analyses provide insights into spinach genetic diversity and population differentiation. Genome-wide association studies of 20 agronomical traits identify numerous significantly associated regions and candidate genes for these traits. Domestication sweeps in the spinach genome are identified, some of which are associated with important traits (e.g., leaf phenotype, bolting and flowering), demonstrating the role of artificial selection in shaping spinach phenotypic evolution. This study provides not only insights into the spinach evolution and domestication but also valuable resources for facilitating spinach breeding. Spinach is a nutritious leafy vegetable growing worldwide. Here, the authors report a high-quality chromosome-scale reference genome assembly of spinach and genome resequencing of 305 accessions, and provide insights into spinach domestication and the genetic basis of agronomic traits.

Abstract
Kidney stone disease is a multifactorial condition influenced by both genetic predisposition and environmental factors such as lifestyle and dietary habits. Although different monogenic polymorphisms have been proposed as playing a causal role for calcium nephrolithiasis, the prevalence of these mutations in the general population and their complete pathogenetic pathway is yet to be determined. General dietary advice for kidney stone formers includes elevated fluid intake, dietary restriction of sodium and animal proteins, avoidance of a low calcium diet, maintenance of a normal body mass index, and elevated intake of vegetables and fibers. Thus, balanced calcium consumption protects against the risk for kidney stones by reducing intestinal oxalate availability and its urinary excretion. However, calcium supplementation given between meals might increase urinary calcium excretion without the beneficial effect on oxalate. In kidney stone formers, circulating active vitamin D has been found to be increased, whereas higher plasma 25-hydroxycholecalciferol seems to be present only in hypercalciuric patients. The association between nutritional vitamin D supplements and the risk for stone formation is currently not completely understood. However, taken together, available evidence might suggest that vitamin D administration worsens the risk for stone formation in patients predisposed to hypercalciuria. In this review, we analyzed and discussed available literature on the effect of calcium and vitamin D supplementation on the risk for kidney stone formation.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health issue affecting 14% of the general population. However, research focusing on CKD mechanisms/treatment is limited because of a lack of animal models recapitulating the disease physiopathology, including its complications. We analyzed the effects of a three-week diet rich in sodium oxalate (OXA diet) on rats and showed that, compared to controls, rats developed a stable CKD with a 60% reduction in glomerular filtration rate, elevated blood urea levels and proteinuria. Histological analyses revealed massive cortical disorganization, tubular atrophy and fibrosis. Males and females were sensitive to the OXA diet, but decreasing the diet period to one week led to GFR significance but not stable diminution. Rats treated with the OXA diet also displayed classical CKD complications such as elevated blood pressure and reduced hematocrit. Functional cardiac analyses revealed that the OXA diet triggered significant cardiac dysfunction. Altogether, our results showed the feasibility of using a convenient and non-invasive strategy to induce CKD and its classical systemic complications in rats. This model, which avoids kidney mass loss or acute toxicity, has strong potential for research into CKD mechanisms and novel therapies, which could protect and postpone the use of dialysis or transplantation.

Abstract
Bone disorders are a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), obesity and gut malabsorption. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is defined as an appropriate increase in parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion, driven by either reduced serum calcium or increased phosphate concentrations, due to an underlying condition. The available evidence on the effects of dietary advice on secondary hyperparathyroidism confirms the benefit of a diet characterized by decreased phosphate intake, avoiding low calcium and vitamin D consumption (recommended intakes 1000-1200 mg/day and 400-800 UI/day, respectively). In addition, low protein intake in CKD patients is associated with a better control of SHPT risk factors, although its strength in avoiding hyperphosphatemia and the resulting outcomes are debated, mostly for dialyzed patients. Ultimately, a consensus on the effect of dietary acid loads in the prevention of SHPT is still lacking. In conclusion, a reasonable approach for reducing the risk for secondary hyperparathyroidism is to individualize dietary manipulation based on existing risk factors and concomitant medical conditions. More studies are needed to evaluate long-term outcomes of a balanced diet on the management and prevention of secondary hyperparathyroidism in at-risk patients at.

Abstract
Although spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) is considered to be one of the most nutrient-rich leafy vegetables, it is also a potent accumulator of anti-nutritional oxalate. Reducing oxalate content would increase the nutritional value of spinach by enhancing the dietary bioavailability of calcium and other minerals. This study aimed to investigate the proposed hypothesis that a complex network of genes associated with intrinsic metabolic and physiological processes regulates oxalate homeostasis in spinach. Transcriptomic (RNA-Seq) analysis of the leaf and root tissues of two spinach genotypes with contrasting oxalate phenotypes was performed under normal physiological conditions. A total of 2308 leaf- and 1686 root-specific differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the high-oxalate spinach genotype. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis of DEGs identified molecular functions associated with various enzymatic activities, while KEGG pathway analysis revealed enrichment of the metabolic and secondary metabolite pathways. The expression profiles of genes associated with distinct physiological processes suggested that the glyoxylate cycle, ascorbate degradation, and photorespiratory pathway may collectively regulate oxalate in spinach. The data support the idea that isocitrate lyase (ICL), ascorbate catabolism-related genes, and acyl-activating enzyme 3 (AAE3) all play roles in oxalate homeostasis in spinach. The findings from this study provide the foundation for novel insights into oxalate metabolism in spinach.
