The Relationship between Restrained Eating, Body Image, and Dietary Intake among University Students in China: A Cross-Sectional Study

Eating behaviors and dietary intake 2 to 4 years following sleeve gastrectomy: Are there any associations?

OBJECTIVES

A lack of research exists on associations between eating behaviors and dietary intake among patients undergoing bariatric surgery. This study aimed to ascertain the association between eating behaviors and dietary quantity and quality at mid-term postsleeve gastrectomy (SG).

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included 146 adults within 2 to 4 years post-SG. Dietary intake and eating behaviors were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire, respectively. Energy and the proportion of macronutrients were determined. Carbohydrate quality index (CQI), fat quality index (FQI), healthy plate protein quality index (HPPQI), macronutrient quality index (MQI), and Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 were computed to evaluate diet quality. Participants were categorized into high and low groups based on median scores for each eating behavior scale. Least-squared (geometric) means and 95% confidence intervals were determined for each group using the analysis of covariance, adjusted for age and sex.

RESULTS

The mean time since surgery for participants was 30.8 ± 6.5 months, and 77.4% were female. Participants with high emotional eating had higher energy and HPPQI. Individuals with high external eating had higher energy and percentages of fat and lower FQI and HEI scores. Individuals with high restrained eating scores demonstrated lower energy intake but a higher percentage of protein intake and higher CQI, FQI, MQI, and HEI scores.

CONCLUSIONS

External eating showed the most unfavorable associations, while restrained eating showed the most favorable associations with quantity and quality of diet 2 to 4 years after SG. Emotional eating was minimally related to dietary characteristics.

Peer Appearance Teasing and Restrained Eating Among Chinese Adolescent Girls: A Mediation Model of Fear of Negative Appearance Evaluation and Body Surveillance

Restrained eating is becoming widespread recently. The present study aimed to examine whether peer appearance teasing was positively associated with restrained eating among Chinese adolescent girls and whether this association was mediated by fear of negative appearance evaluation (FNAE) and body surveillance. A sample of 720 Chinese adolescent girls completed questionnaires on peer appearance teasing, FNAE, body surveillance, and restrained eating. Peer appearance teasing was significantly and positively related to girls' restrained eating. FNAE mediated the relationship between peer appearance teasing and restrained eating. Furthermore, the association between peer appearance teasing and restrained eating was sequentially mediated by FNAE and body surveillance. The findings of this study provide new insights into the development of restrained eating among adolescent girls, and highlight peer appearance teasing and body surveillance as potential targets for intervention programs regarding body image concerns and eating disorders.

Association between Diet Quality and Eating Behavior in Type 2 Diabetes Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a global epidemic. To effectively control T2DM, individuals must adhere to a high-quality diet that encompasses not only healthy dietary patterns but also promotes positive eating behaviors. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 314 patients with T2DM, and we evaluated the diet quality and also examined the associations between eating behavior, diet quality, and anthropometric and clinical factors in T2DM patients. We used the Diet Quality Index-International and Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire to assess dietary characteristics. We found that women had a significantly higher diet quality than men (61.40 vs. 58.68, p = 0.002) but were also more prone to emotional eating (2.00 vs. 1.53, p < 0.001) and restrained eating (2.39 vs. 2.05, p = 0.002). Restrained eating correlated with duration of diabetes (r = -0.169, p = 0.003), body mass index (r = 0.182, p = 0.001), and external eating with glycated hemoglobin (r = 0.114, p = 0.044). Patients with emotional eating had a higher vitamin C adequacy score (β = 0.117, p = 0.045). External eating was positively associated with grain adequacy (β = 0.208, p < 0.001) and negatively associated with empty-calorie food moderation score (β = -0.125, p = 0.032). For restrained eating, we found associations with vitamin C adequacy (β = -0.138, p = 0.017) and fruit adequacy (β = 0.125, p = 0.033). In conclusion, the results of this study provide valuable insight into dietary behavior and emphasize the importance of promoting healthy eating habits for T2DM patients.

Effects of a Comprehensive Dietary Intervention Program, Promoting Nutrition Literacy, Eating Behavior, Dietary Quality, and Gestational Weight Gain in Chinese Urban Women with Normal Body Mass Index during Pregnancy

In urban Chinese women with normal body weight during pregnancy, we implemented a comprehensive dietary intervention program aimed at enhancing nutrition literacy, dietary quality, and gestational weight gain. The methods included both online and offline health education on prenatal nutrition, weekly weight monitoring, family back education practices, and real-time dietary guidance. The intervention was delivered to randomly assigned control and intervention group participants from gestational week 12 to week 24. The intervention group (n = 44; 100% complete data) showed significant differences (mean (SD)) compared to the control group (n = 42; 95.5% complete data) in nutrition literacy (53.39 ± 6.60 vs. 43.55 ± 9.58, p < 0.001), restrained eating (31.61 ± 7.28 vs. 28.79 ± 7.96, p < 0.001), Diet Quality Distance (29.11 ± 8.52 vs. 40.71 ± 7.39, p < 0.001), and weight gain within the first 12 weeks of intervention (4.97 ± 1.33 vs. 5.98 ± 2.78, p = 0.029). However, there was no significant difference in the incidence of gestational diabetes (2 (4.5%) vs. 4 (9.5%), p = 0.629). Participants in the intervention group reported an overall satisfaction score of 4.70 ± 0.46 for the intervention strategy. These results emphasize the positive role of comprehensive dietary intervention in promoting a healthy diet during pregnancy.

The effect of spatial separation on food and drink choices from an online menu

Emerging research suggests that modifying the presentation context of healthy food items can subtly 'nudge' individuals to make healthier choices. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of spatial separation between high and low nutritional value items on food and drink choices from an online fast-food menu. Participants (N = 210 women) were presented with one of three pictorial menus in which high nutritional value food and drink items were presented spatially mixed, grouped, or separate from low nutritional value items. Participants were asked to make one selection from each menu category (a main, drink, and dessert), and then completed a measure of dietary restraint. Overall, there was no main effect of menu condition. However, dietary restraint status moderated the effect of menu condition on healthy choices. In particular, women who scored low (but not those who scored high) on dietary restraint were positively influenced by the experimental manipulation, making approximately 14 % healthier selections when high nutritional value items were presented separately from low nutritional value items. This was principally the case for desserts, and to a lesser extent drinks. The findings have practical implications for the design of online fast-food menus to promote healthier food and drink selections.

Associations among eating behaviors, food security status, and dietary intake during pregnancy

Dietary intake of certain food groups and/or nutrients during pregnancy has been associated with maternal and infant pregnancy-related outcomes. Few studies have examined how behavioral and environmental factors interact to influence prenatal diet. We examined associations between eating behaviors (dietary restraint, emotional eating, external eating) and food security status regarding dietary intake of selected nutrients/food groups during pregnancy. Participants (N = 299; 29% Non-Hispanic Black; 16% ≤ high school education; 21% food insecure) completed validated questionnaires to assess estimated daily intake of food groups/nutrients during pregnancy [e.g., added sugars from sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), % of energy from fat, fruit and vegetable (FV) intake] via National Cancer Institute Dietary Screener Questionnaires); eating behaviors (Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire); and food security status (6-item USDA Food security Module). Separate hierarchical multiple regressions for each dietary outcome were conducted controlling for maternal age, education, income-to-needs, race/ethnicity, pre-pregnancy BMI, and gestational diabetes. A significant interaction was found between dietary restraint and food security status on added sugar intake from SSBs (β = -0.15, p = 0.02). The negative association between restraint and added sugar from SSBs was stronger among food insecure participants (β = -0.47, p < 0.001 vs. β = -0.15, p = 0.03). Higher external eating (β = 0.21, p < 0.01) and lower restraint (β = -0.13, p = 0.03) were associated with higher % of energy from fat and living in a food insecure household (β = -0.15, p = 0.01) was associated with lower FV intake. Understanding dietary intake during pregnancy requires consideration of the broader context in which eating behaviors occur.

Cardiovascular health in nursing and medical students

OBJECTIVE

To verify whether nursing and medical students take measures regarding their cardiovascular health and the associated risk factors.

METHOD

Cross-sectional study, online data collection with 413 students in February and March 2021, using specific and validated instruments. Kruskal-Wallis, chi-square and logistic regression were adopted for statistical analyses.

RESULTS

73.3% self-reported that they were healthy. We identified a higher risk for developing cardiovascular diseases in sedentary students (OR = 38.6, p < 0.001), with irregular adherence to physical activity (OR = 16.2, p < 0.001) and with a higher level of perceived stress (OR = 1.12, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Students who take action to promote cardiovascular health showed lower risk compared to those who did not. If students do not value their own health during the education process, this may interfere with their professional performance after graduation.

Do British and Chinese adolescents snack for different reasons? A cross-country study using the Theory of Planned Behaviour and eating styles

Snacking is prevalent in adolescents and can have significant health impacts, but there is considerable individual and cross-country variation in determinants on adolescent snacking. The present study examined the role of eating styles (i.e. restrained eating, emotional eating, external eating, mindful eating) and the constructs of an extended Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) (i.e. attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, habit strength) in predicting adolescent snacking, and the moderating effects of country. A survey was completed by adolescents aged 16-19 years from China (N = 182; mean age = 16.13, SD = 0.87) and England (N = 96; mean age = 17.04, SD = 0.74). Compared to British adolescents, Chinese adolescents showed higher restrained eating (p = .009), lower external eating (p = .004), less positive attitudes (p < .001) and subjective norms (p = .007) to, and less strong habit strength (p = .005) for unhealthy snacking. Mindful eating significantly predicted lower consumption of unhealthy snacks (p = .008) and beverages (p = .001), while restrained eating predicted higher consumption of fruit (p < .001) and vegetables (p < .001), regardless of country. Country showed significant moderating effects of TPB constructs on unhealthy beverages (p = .008) and fruit (p < .001) consumption, and effects on unhealthy snack (p = .023) and vegetable (p = .015) consumption approaching significance. Subjective norms predicted unhealthy snacking frequency regardless of country (p = .001). Habit strength predicted consumption of beverages (p < .001) and fruit (p < .001) only in English adolescents. Mindful eating may be a positive intervention approach to help reduce adolescent unhealthy snacking. TPB-based snacking interventions should carefully consider the country context. Acknowledging country-specific determinants of snacking are recommended.

Emotional Eating as a Mediator in the Relationship between Dietary Restraint and Body Weight

This study aimed to assess the relationships between routine and compensatory restraints and body mass index (BMI), as well as to explore the mediating role of emotional and external eating in the relationships between routine and compensatory restraints and BMI. Chinese adults aged ≥18 years with different weight statuses were invited to fill out an online questionnaire. Routine and compensatory restraints and emotional and external eating were assessed using the validated 13-item Chinese version of the Weight-Related Eating Questionnaire. Mediation analyses tested the mediation effects of emotional and external eating on the relationship between routine and compensatory restraints and BMI. In total, 949 participants (26.4% male) responded to the survey (mean age = 33 years, standard deviation (SD) = 14, mean BMI = 22.0 kg/m², SD = 3.8). The mean routine restraint score was higher in the overweight/obese group (mean ± SD = 2.13 ± 0.76, p < 0.001) than in the normal weight (2.08 ± 0.89) and underweight (1.72 ± 0.94) groups. However, the normal weight group scored higher in compensatory restraint (2.88 ± 1.03, p = 0.021) than the overweight/obese (2.75 ± 0.93) and underweight (2.62 ± 1.04) groups. Routine restraint was related to higher BMI both directly (β = 0.07, p = 0.02) and indirectly through emotional eating (β = 0.04, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.03, 0.07). Compensatory restraint was only indirectly related to higher BMI through emotional eating (β = 0.04, 95% CI = 0.03, 0.07).

Association between Eating Habits and Sodium Intake among Chinese University Students

(1) Background: Insufficient evidence exists regarding the dietary habits that may contribute to high sodium intake among college students in China. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the dietary sodium intake of college students in Hunan and its association with their dietary habits. (2) Methods: In total, 585 university students from Hunan were recruited for this study. The sodium Food Frequency Questionnaire (sodium-FFQ) and dietary habits were assessed. (3) Results: Excluding cooking salt and high-sodium seasonings, the daily dietary sodium intake among college students in Changsha, Hunan Province, was 1183.74 (563.38, 2054.86) mg/day. A vast majority (89%) of college students reported eating outside of school at least once a week, and approximately one-third (34%) ordered takeaways at least once a week. After adjusting for confounding factors, the associations between the frequency of eating out and ordering takeaways with college students' sodium intake remained significant. (4) Conclusions: The findings indicate that excessive dietary sodium intake among college students in Hunan is a growing concern. College students who frequently eat out and order takeaways tend to have a higher sodium intake. Future research should focus on identifying the main sources of dietary sodium and developing interventions that promote healthy dietary habits among college students.

Body talk on social networking sites and restrained eating among adolescents: A test of a multiple mediation model

The present study aimed to examine the link between body talk on social networking sites (SNS body talk) and restrained eating as well as the mediating roles of fear of negative appearance evaluation (FNAE) and body shame in this relationship. Furthermore, the moderating role of gender in the mediation model was also examined. A sample of 1481 Chinese middle and high school students (720 girls, mean age = 15.49 ± 1.84) completed self-reported measures of SNS body talk, FNAE, body shame, and restrained eating. Results showed that SNS body talk was positively associated with restrained eating. FNAE and body shame mediated the association between SNS body talk and restrained eating, separately and serially. Furthermore, gender difference emerged in the path from SNS body talk to body shame and the path from FNAE to body shame. Findings of the present study enrich the literature on social media and body image and eating behaviors, and have important implications for reducing negative body image and disordered eating among adolescents.

Correlation between Eating Behavior and Use of Social Media with Energy-Dense Food Intake Based on Gender among Students in Semarang, Indonesia

BACKGROUND: Eating behavior and the use of social media are believed to affect the intake of energy-dense foods. This study aimed to determine the relationship between eating behavior and use of social media with energy-dense food intake in students by gender. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional method. The subjects were 123 peoples from one of university in Semarang, Indonesia aged 18-24 years, taken using the consecutive sampling method. Energy-dense food intake was taken using the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire, eating behavior was using the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire and social media use was using the Scale of Effects of Social Media on Eating Behavior and self-identity questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson's test, Spearman's rank test, and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: The intake of energy-dense foods was higher in men than women. This study showed that there was a relationship between emotional eating (p = 0.001; r = 0.408), external eating (p = 0.008; r = 0.338), and eating behavior due to social media (p = 0.001; r = 0.415) and energy-dense food intake. in women, and duration of social media use (p = 0.003; r = 0.377) with energy-dense food intake in men. Gender and eating behavior due to social media had an effect of 24.9% on energy-dense food intake. CONCLUSION: In women, emotional eating, external eating, and eating behavior due to social media were related to the intake of energy-dense foods. In men, the duration of social media use was related to the intake of energy-dense foods. Gender and eating behavior due to social media were the most influential variables on energy-dense food intake.
