Abstract
The intricate interplay between plant-based nutrition, antioxidants, and their impact on athletic performance forms the cornerstone of this comprehensive review. Emphasizing the pivotal importance of dietary choices in the realm of sports, this paper sets the stage for an in-depth exploration of how stress and physical performance are interconnected through the lens of nutrition. The increasing interest among athletes in plant-based diets presents an opportunity with benefits for health, performance, and recovery. It is essential to investigate the connection between sports, plants, and antioxidants. Highlighting the impact of nutrition on recovery and well-being, this review emphasizes how antioxidants can help mitigate oxidative stress. Furthermore, it discusses the growing popularity of plant-based diets among athletes. It elaborates on the importance of antioxidants in combating radicals addressing stress levels while promoting cellular health. By identifying rich foods, it emphasizes the role of a balanced diet in ensuring sufficient intake of these beneficial compounds. Examining stress within the context of sports activities, this review provides insights into its mechanisms and its impact on athletic performance as well as recovery processes. This study explores the impact of plant-based diets on athletes including their types, potential advantages and challenges. It also addresses the drawbacks of relying on plant-based diets, concerns related to antioxidant supplementation and identifies areas where further research is needed. Furthermore, the review suggests directions for research and potential innovations in sports nutrition. Ultimately it brings together the aspects of sports, plant-based nutrition, and antioxidants to provide a perspective for athletes, researchers and practitioners. By consolidating existing knowledge, it offers insights that can pave the way for advancements in the ever-evolving field of sports nutrition.

Abstract
Although a diet high in plant foods can provide beneficial nutritional outcomes, unbalanced and restrictive plant-based diets may cause nutrient deficiencies. Protein intake from these diets is widely discussed, but the comparison of animal and plant proteins often disregards amino acid composition and digestibility as measurements of protein quality. Poor provision of high-quality protein may result in adverse outcomes, especially for individuals with increased nutrient requirements. Several dietary modeling studies have examined protein adequacy when animal-sourced proteins are replaced with traditional and novel plant proteins, but no review consolidating these findings are available. This narrative review aimed to summarize the approaches of modeling studies for protein intake and protein quality when animal-sourced proteins are replaced with plant foods in diet simulations and examine how these factors vary across age groups. A total of 23 studies using dietary models to predict protein contribution from plant proteins were consolidated and categorized into the following themes-protein intake, protein quality, novel plant-based alternatives, and plant-based diets in special populations. Protein intake from plant-based diet simulations was lower than from diets with animal-sourced foods but met country-specific nutrient requirements. However, protein adequacy from some plant-sourced foods were not met for simulated diets of children and older adults. Reduced amino acid adequacy was observed with increasing intake of plant foods in some scenarios. Protein adequacy was generally dependent on the choice of substitution with legumes, nuts, and seeds providing greater protein intake and quality than cereals. Complete replacement of animal to plant-sourced foods reduced protein adequacy when compared with baseline diets and partial replacements.

Abstract
Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. While the exact cause of acne is not fully understood, it is believed to be influenced by various factors such as the skin microbiome, host immunity, hormones, genetics, and possibly diet. There are several treatment options for acne, including antibiotics and vitamin A derivatives (retinoids). However, these treatments can have side effects, such as dryness, redness, and peeling of the skin. The relationship between diet and acne remains somewhat controversial. Studies have found that Western societies have a higher incidence of acne than non-Western societies, which is believed to be due to dietary differences. Several experiments were conducted to target the skin microbiome and treat acne with the hope of using probiotics orally or topically to regulate the immune response and reduce inflammation in acne. In addition, studies have shown that a plant-based diet can benefit individuals with acne. Avoiding dairy consumption is one of the most effective dietary changes for reducing acne. As part of our investigation, we conducted a review to determine the effect of probiotics and vegetarian diets on acne.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plant-based diets are becoming increasingly popular due to favourable environmental footprints and have been associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Here, we investigated the potential mechanisms to explain the lower T2DM risk observed among individuals following plant-based diets. METHODS Prospective data from the UK Biobank, a cohort study of participants aged 40 to 69 years at baseline, was evaluated. Associations between healthful and unhealthful plant-based indices (hPDI and uPDI) and T2DM risk were analysed by multivariable Cox regression models, followed by causal mediation analyses to investigate which cardiometabolic risk factors explained the observed associations. RESULTS Of 113,097 study participants 2,628 developed T2DM over 12 years of follow-up. Participants with the highest hPDI scores (Quartile 4) had a 24 % lower T2DM risk compared to those with the lowest scores (Quartile 1) [Hazard Ratio (HR): 0.76, 95 % Confidence Interval (CI): 0.68-0.85]. This association was mediated by a lower BMI (proportion mediated: 28 %), lower waist circumference (28 %), and lower concentrations of HBA1c (11 %), triglycerides (9 %), alanine aminotransferase (5 %), gamma glutamyl transferase (4 %), C-reactive protein (4 %), insulin-like growth factor 1 (4 %), cystatin C (4 %) and urate (4 %). Higher uPDI scores were associated with a 37 % higher T2DM risk [HR: 1.37, 95 % CI:1.22- 1.53], with higher waist circumference (proportion mediated: 17 %), BMI (7 %), and higher concentrations of triglycerides (13 %) potentially playing mediating roles. CONCLUSION Healthful plant-based diets may protect against T2DM via lower body fatness, but also via normoglycaemia, lower basal inflammation as well as improved kidney and liver function.

Abstract
Designing and manufacturing functional bioactive ingredients and pharmaceuticals have grown worldwide. Consumers demand for safe ingredients and concerns over harmful synthetic additives have prompted food manufacturers to seek safer and sustainable alternative solutions. In recent years the preference by consumers to natural bioactive agents over synthetic compounds increased exponentially, and consequently, naturally derived phytochemicals and bioactive compounds, with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, becoming essential in food packaging field. In response to societal needs, packaging needs to be developed based on sustainable manufacturing practices, marketing strategies, consumer behaviour, environmental concerns, and the emergence of new technologies, particularly bio- and nanotechnology. This critical systematic review assessed the role of antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds from natural resources in food packaging and consumer behaviour patterns in relation to phytochemical and biologically active substances used in the development of food packaging. The use of phytochemicals and bioactive compounds inside packaging materials used in food industry could generate unpleasant odours derived from the diffusion of the most volatile compounds from the packaging material to the food and food environment. These consumer concerns must be addressed to understand minimum concentrations that will not affect consumer sensory and aroma negative perceptions. The research articles were carefully chosen and selected by following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines.

Abstract
Allostatic load (AL) is a multisystemic index of biological wear and tear which is associated with poor health outcomes. In recent years, researchers have examined the association between dietary pattern intake and AL; however, no studies to date have examined the relationship between AL and consumption of a Mediterranean diet. Blood and urine samples were collected from 201 community-dwelling older adults who completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). A Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) was calculated based on previous recommendations and a sex-based AL index was calculated using a count-based approach for 16 biomarkers associated with neuroendocrine, immune, cardiovascular, or metabolic function. It was hypothesized that a higher MDS would be associated with lower AL, and that this association would be particularly robust for the immune and metabolic subcomponents of the AL index. In support of the primary study hypotheses, generalized linear models revealed a significant inverse relationship between MDS and AL (ß = -0.03, P = 0.037). However, subcomponents of the AL model were not significantly associated with MDS. Exploratory sub-group analyses by sex suggested that the association between AL and MDS was more robust in male than in female participants. The current findings are interpreted with caution given the study design and sample characteristics. Nonetheless, these findings contribute to the literature supporting the Mediterranean diet as an important lifestyle behavior that may minimize AL, and therefore support healthy aging.

Abstract
Calorie restriction (CR), referred to as a reduction in dietary calorie intake without malnutrition, has been demonstrated to be a safe way to extend longevity of yeast, worms, and laboratory animals, and to decrease the risk factors in age-related diseases including cancer in humans. Pre-clinical studies in animal models demonstrated that CR may enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy during breast cancer treatment. Reduced calorie intake ameliorates risk factors and delays the onset of cancer by altering metabolism and fostering health-enhancing characteristics including increased autophagy and insulin sensitivity, and decreased blood glucose levels, inflammation, angiogenesis, and growth factor signaling. CR is not a common protocol implemented by medical practitioners to the general public due to the lack of substantial clinical studies. Future research and clinical trials are urgently needed to understand fully the biochemical basis of CR or CR mimetics to support its benefits. Here, we present a mini-review of research studies integrating CR as an adjuvant to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy during breast cancer treatment.

Abstract
Objective. Hepatic metabolic disorder induced by lipotoxicity plays a detrimental role in metabolic fatty liver disease pathogenesis. Cimifugin (Cim), a coumarin derivative extracted from the root of Saposhnikovia divaricata, possesses multiple biological properties against inflammation, allergy, and oxidative stress. However, limited study has addressed the hepatoprotective role of Cim. Here, we investigate the protective effect of Cim against lipotoxicity-induced cytotoxicity and steatosis in hepatocytes and clarify its potential mechanisms. Methods. AML-12, a nontransformed mouse hepatocyte cell line, was employed in this study. The cells were incubated with palmitate or oleate to imitate hepatotoxicity or steatosis model, respectively. Results. Cim significantly reversed palmitate-induced hepatocellular injury in a dose-dependent manner, accompanied by improvements in oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage. Cim pretreatment reversed palmitate-stimulated TLR4/p38 MAPK activation and SIRT1 reduction without affecting JNK, ERK1/2, and AMPK pathways. The hepatoprotective effects of Cim were abolished either through activating TLR4/p38 by their pharmacological agonists or genetical silencing SIRT1 via special siRNA, indicating a mechanistic involvement. Moreover, Cim treatment improved oleate-induced hepatocellular lipid accumulation, which could be blocked by either TLR4 stimulation or SIRT1 knockdown. We observed that SIRT1 was a potential target of TLR4 in palmitate-treated hepatocytes, since TLR4 agonist LPS aggravated, whereas TLR4 antagonist CLI-095 alleviated palmitate-decreased SIRT1 expression. SIRT1 knockdown did not affect palmitate-induced TLR4. In addition, TLR4 activation by LPS significantly abolished Cim-protected SIRT1 reduction induced by palmitate. These results collaboratively indicated that TLR4-regulated SIRT1 pathways was mechanistically involved in the protective effects of Cim against lipotoxicity. Conclusion. In brief, we demonstrate the protective effects of Cim against lipotoxicity-induced cell death and steatosis in hepatocytes. TLR4-regulated p38 MAPK and SIRT1 pathways are involved in Cim-protected hepatic lipotoxicity. Cim is a potential candidate for improving hepatic metabolic disorders mediated by lipotoxicity.

Abstract
The diagnosis and treatment of cancer are associated with impairment at the physical and at psychological level. In addition, side effects are a potentially treatment-limiting factor that may necessitate dose reduction, delay, or even discontinuation of therapy, with negative consequences for outcome and mean survival. Numerous studies have shown that physical activity and sports and exercise therapy programs are not only practicable but also recommendable for oncologic patients during the acute phase and in the aftercare. Furthermore, nutrition plays an important role in all stages of tumor therapy. A timely integration of a nutrition therapy and physical activity in the form of physiotherapy and sports therapy serves to prevent and reduce treatment-associated side effects. Evidence-based recommendations on cancer prevention through nutrition therapy, physical activity, and sports and exercise therapy should be integrated into treatment plans for oncology patients as well as in health care services for the general population. Individual counselling by trained nutrition and exercise specialists may be advisable to receive concrete recommendations on the respective tumor entity or specific side effects. This mini review is based on a selective literature search in the PubMed database and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials on the subjects of healthy diet and physical activity in primary prevention and follow-up about cancer.

Abstract
Evaluation of nutritionally enhanced biofortified dietary interventions that increase lifespan may uncover cost-effective and sustainable approaches for treatment of age-related morbidities and increasing healthy life expectancy. In this study, we report that anthocyanin rich, high yielding crossbred blue wheat prolongs lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster in different dietary contexts. In addition to functioning as an antioxidant rich intervention, the biofortified blue wheat also works through modulating expression of DR pathway genes including AMPK alpha, SREBP, PEPCK and Cry. Supplementation with blue- or purple-colored wheat provided better protection against paraquat-induced oxidative stress than control diet and increased survivability of flies in which superoxide dismutase 2 was knocked down conditionally in adults. Lastly, our findings indicate that supplementing biofortified blue wheat formulated diet prevented the decrease in lifespan and cardiac structural pathologies associated with intake of high fat diet. Overall, our findings indicate that plant-based diets formulated with biofortified cereal crops promote healthy ageing and delay progression of diseases that are exacerbated by accumulation of oxidative damage.

The Influence of Animal- or Plant-Based Diets on Blood and Urine Trimethylamine-N-Oxide (TMAO) Levels in Humans. Curr Nutr Rep 2022; 11:56-68. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The aim of the review was to evaluate which diets are associated with higher TMAO levels. RECENT FINDINGS Several studies have shown that plasma and urinary levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) are a reliable indicator of cardiovascular disease risk. Diet certainly has a strong influence on TMAO levels, but there is still uncertainty about which diet is the most effective in reducing this risk factor. PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were searched for studies that were published up until July 1, 2021 using specific keywords. In total, 447 studies were evaluated, of which papers on individual foods or supplements, or conducted in children, in vitro or in animal model studies were excluded. Twenty-five studies were included in this review. Three studies showed that caloric restriction and (visceral) weight loss improve TMAO levels. Six out of eight studies revealed beneficial effects of plant-based diets on plasma or urinary TMAO concentrations. Most of the studies demonstrated that a diet high in protein, particularly of animal origin, such as diets rich in fish or red meat, have negative effects on TMAO levels. Most studies that have evaluated the relationship between diet and plasma or urinary concentrations of TMAO seem to indicate that plant-based diets (Mediterranean, vegetarian and vegan) are effective in improving TMAO levels, while animal-based diets appear to have the opposite effect. Further long-term studies are needed to assess whether vegetarian or vegan diets are more effective than the Mediterranean diet in reducing TMAO levels.
