Abstract
(1) Background: Accurate body composition assessment in CCR patients is crucial due to the high prevalence of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and cachexia affecting survival. This study evaluates the correlation between body composition assessed by CT imaging as a reference technique, BIVA, nutritional ultrasound, and handgrip strength in CCR patients. (2) Methods: This retrospective study included CCR patients assessed by the Endocrinology and Nutrition Services of Virgen de la Victoria in Malaga and Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona from October 2018 to July 2023. Assessments included anthropometry, BIVA, NU, HGS, and AI-assisted CT analysis at the L3 level for body composition. Pearson's analysis determined the correlation of CT-derived variables with BIVA, NU, and HGS. (3) Results: A total of 267 CCR patients (mean age 68.2 ± 10.9 years, 61.8% men) were studied. Significant gender differences were found in body composition and strength. CT-SMI showed strong correlations with body cell mass (r = 0.65), rectus femoris cross-sectional area (r = 0.56), and handgrip strength (r = 0.55), with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.789. CT-based adipose tissue measurements showed significant correlations with fat mass (r = 0.56), BMI (r = 0.78), A-SAT (r = 0.49), and L-SAT (r = 0.66). Regression analysis indicated a high predictive power for CT-SMI, explaining approximately 80% of its variance (R2 = 0.796). (4) Conclusions: Comprehensive screening of colorectal cancer patients through BIVA, NU, HGS, and CT optimizes the results of the evaluation. These methods complement each other in assessing muscle mass, fat distribution, and nutritional status in CCR. When CT is unavailable or bedside assessment is needed, HGS, BIVA, and NU provide an accurate assessment of body composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Iron deficiency affects more than 60% of colorectal cancer patients at the time of diagnosis. Iron deficiency ultimately leads to anemia, but additionally, iron deficiency might impact other domains of colorectal cancer patients' health and well-being. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of iron deficiency on fatigue, quality of life, cognition, and physical ability in patients undergoing evaluation for colorectal cancer. METHODS Multicenter, prospective, observational cross-sectional study (2021-2023). Fatigue was the primary outcome, measured using the Focused Assessment of Cancer Treatment-Anemia questionnaire (FACT-An). Quality of Life, Cognition, Aerobe capacity, mobility, and peripheral muscle strength were tested as secondary outcomes. Multivariate analysis was performed to estimate the impact of iron deficiency on all outcomes. RESULTS Two hundred and one patients were analyzed, 57% being iron deficient. In multivariate regression analysis, iron deficiency was not associated with fatigue: FACT-An (r = -1.17, p = 0.57, 25% CI: -5.27 to 2.92). Results on quality of life, cognition, and mobility were non-significant and with small regression coefficients. Iron deficiency showed a nearly significant association with reduced hand-grip-strength (r = -3.47 kg, p = 0.06, 25%CI -7.03 to 0.08) and reduced 6 min walking distance (r = -40.36 m, p = 0.07, 25%CI: -84.73 to 4.00). CONCLUSION Iron deficiency in patients undergoing evaluation for colorectal cancer was not associated with fatigue, quality of life, or cognition, but might affect aerobic endurance and peripheral muscle strength to a degree that is clinically relevant.

Abstract
(1) Background: The assessment of muscle mass is crucial in the nutritional evaluation of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), as decreased muscle mass is linked to increased complications and poorer prognosis. This study aims to evaluate the utility of AI-assisted L3 CT for assessing body composition and determining low muscle mass using both the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria for malnutrition and the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) criteria for sarcopenia in CRC patients prior to surgery. Additionally, we aim to establish cutoff points for muscle mass in men and women and propose their application in these diagnostic frameworks. (2) Methods: This retrospective observational study included CRC patients assessed by the Endocrinology and Nutrition services of the Regional University Hospitals of Malaga, Virgen de la Victoria of Malaga, and Vall d'Hebrón of Barcelona from October 2018 to July 2023. A morphofunctional assessment, including anthropometry, bioimpedance analysis (BIA), and handgrip strength, was conducted to apply the GLIM criteria for malnutrition and the EWGSOP2 criteria for sarcopenia. Body composition evaluation was performed through AI-assisted analysis of CT images at the L3 level. ROC analysis was used to determine the predictive capacity of variables derived from the CT analysis regarding the diagnosis of low muscle mass and to describe cutoff points. (3) Results: A total of 586 patients were enrolled, with a mean age of 68.4 ± 10.2 years. Using the GLIM criteria, 245 patients (41.8%) were diagnosed with malnutrition. Applying the EWGSOP2 criteria, 56 patients (9.6%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia. ROC curve analysis for the skeletal muscle index (SMI) showed a strong discriminative capacity of muscle area to detect low fat-free mass index (FFMI) (AUC = 0.82, 95% CI 0.77-0.87, p < 0.001). The identified SMI cutoff for diagnosing low FFMI was 32.75 cm2/m2 (Sn 77%, Sp 64.3%; AUC = 0.79, 95% CI 0.70-0.87, p < 0.001) in women, and 39.9 cm2/m2 (Sn 77%, Sp 72.7%; AUC = 0.85, 95% CI 0.80-0.90, p < 0.001) in men. Additionally, skeletal muscle area (SMA) showed good discriminative capacity for detecting low appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) (AUC = 0.71, 95% CI 0.65-0.76, p < 0.001). The identified SMA cutoff points for diagnosing low ASMM were 83.2 cm2 (Sn 76.7%, Sp 55.3%; AUC = 0.77, 95% CI 0.69-0.84, p < 0.001) in women and 112.6 cm2 (Sn 82.3%, Sp 58.6%; AUC = 0.79, 95% CI 0.74-0.85, p < 0.001) in men. (4) Conclusions: AI-assisted body composition assessment using CT is a valuable tool in the morphofunctional evaluation of patients with colorectal cancer prior to surgery. CT provides quantitative data on muscle mass for the application of the GLIM criteria for malnutrition and the EWGSOP2 criteria for sarcopenia, with specific cutoff points established for diagnostic use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intestinal flora disorder (IFD) poses a significant challenge after laparoscopic colonic surgery, and no standard criteria exists for its diagnosis and treatment. AIM To analyze the clinical features and risk factors of IFD. METHODS Patients with colon cancer receiving laparoscopic surgery were included using propensity-score-matching (PSM) methods. Based on the occurrence of IFD, patients were categorized into IFD and non-IFD groups. The clinical characteristics and treatment approaches for patients with IFD were analyzed. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to identify the risk factors of IFD. RESULTS The IFD incidence after laparoscopic surgery was 9.0% (97 of 1073 patients). After PSM, 97 and 194 patients were identified in the IFD and non-IFD groups, respectively. The most common symptoms of IFD were diarrhea and abdominal, typically occurring on post-operative days 3 and 4. All patients were managed conservatively, including modulation of the intestinal flora (90.7%), oral/intravenous application of vancomycin (74.2%), and insertion of a gastric/ileus tube for decompression (23.7%). Multivariate regression analysis identified that pre-operative intestinal obstruction [odds ratio (OR) = 2.79, 95%CI: 1.04-7.47, P = 0.041] and post-operative antibiotics (OR = 8.57, 95%CI: 3.31-23.49, P < 0.001) were independent risk factors for IFD, whereas pre-operative parenteral nutrition (OR = 0.12, 95%CI: 0.06-0.26, P < 0.001) emerged as a protective factor. CONCLUSION A stepwise approach of probiotics, vancomycin, and decompression could be an alternative treatment for IFD. Special attention is warranted post-operatively for patients with pre-operative obstruction or early use of antibiotics.

Abstract
There are no models for assessing the factors that determine moderate to poor performance status in patients with cancer after chemotherapy. This study investigated the influencing factors and identified the best model for predicting moderate-poor performance status. A convenience sampling method was used. Demographic and clinical data and evaluation results for fatigue, pain, quality of life and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group status were collected three days after the end of chemotherapy. Decision tree, random forest and logistic regression models were constructed. Ninety-four subjects in the case group had moderate to poor performance status, and 365 subjects in the control group had no or mild activity disorders. The random forest model was the most accurate model. Physical function, total protein, general quality of life within one week before chemotherapy, hemoglobin, pain symptoms and globulin were the main factors. Total protein and hemoglobin levels reflect nutritional status, and globulin levels are an index of liver function. Therefore, physical function, nutritional status, general quality of life and pain symptoms within one week before chemotherapy and liver function can be used to predict moderate-poor performance status. Nurses should pay more attention to patients with poor physical function, poor nutritional status, lower quality of life and pain symptoms after chemotherapy.

Abstract
Cancer patients are at high risk of malnutrition, which can lead to adverse health outcomes such as prolonged hospitalization, increased complications, and increased mortality. Accurate and timely nutritional assessment plays a critical role in effectively managing malnutrition in these patients. However, while many tools exist to assess malnutrition, there is no universally accepted standard. Although different tools have their own strengths and limitations, there is a lack of narrative reviews on nutritional assessment tools for cancer patients. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a non-systematic literature search using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from their inception until May 2023. A total of 90 studies met our selection criteria and were included in our narrative review. We evaluated the applications, strengths, and limitations of 4 commonly used nutritional assessment tools for cancer patients: the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). Our findings revealed that malnutrition was associated with adverse health outcomes. Each of these 4 tools has its applications, strengths, and limitations. Our findings provide medical staff with a foundation for choosing the optimal tool to rapidly and accurately assess malnutrition in cancer patients. It is essential for medical staff to be familiar with these common tools to ensure effective nutritional management of cancer patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thirty-day reoperation rate reflects short-term surgical outcomes following surgery. Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer reportedly has positive effects on postoperative complications. This retrospective study investigated risk factors for 30-day reoperation rate among patients after laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery using a multicenter database. METHODS Participants comprised 3037 patients who had undergone laparoscopic resection of colorectal cancer between April 2016 and December 2022 at the Nagasaki University and six affiliated centers, classified into those who had undergone reoperation within 30 days after surgery (RO group; n = 88) and those who had not (NRO group; n = 2949). Clinicopathological characteristics were compared between groups. RESULTS In the RO group, anastomotic leakage occurred in 57 patients (64.8%), intestinal obstruction in 12 (13.6%), and intraabdominal abscess in 5 (5.7%). Female patients were more frequent, preoperative treatment less frequent, body mass index (BMI) lower, operation time longer, blood loss greater, and hospital stay longer in the RO group (p < .05 each). Multivariate analysis revealed BMI (odds ratio, 0.415; 95% confidence interval, 0.218-0.787; p = .021) and poor performance status (odds ratio, 1.966; 95% confidence interval, 1.106-3.492; p = .021) as independent predictors of reoperation. CONCLUSION Perioperative measures are warranted for patients with low BMI and poor performance status undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nutritional ultrasound (US) is an emerging technique in clinical nutrition for the morphological and structural study of muscle mass. Currently, all definitions of malnutrition include the measurement of muscle mass; however, there is no single way to assess it. It is necessary to develop new techniques to identify muscle involvement in malnutrition that are valid, standardised, reliable, accurate and profitable. OBJECTIVE To value the new muscle US techniques aimed to measure muscle and functional status, to make a more accurate diagnosis and a better prediction of complications and morbidity and mortality in patients at nutritional risk. PRIMARY OUTCOME to assess the feasibility of US or muscle US techniques in both nutritional diagnosis and follow-up in a nutritional intervention programme. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Disease-Related caloric-protein malnutrition EChOgraphy (DRECO) is a prospective, multicentre (25 Spanish hospitals), uncontrolled clinical study in standard clinical practice to value the usefulness of nutritional US (muscle US) in the nutritional diagnosis and follow-up, over 3-6 months, after standard nutritional clinical practice intervention and physical activity, to control their disease-related malnutrition. 1000 patients are expected to be included in. DISCUSSION This study will standardise nutritional US measures. It will validate and define specific cut-off values for nutritional US and correlate it with already well-known nutritional tools such as Subjective Global Assessment or Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria. Thus, muscle US will become not only a tool to diagnose malnutrition, but it will also be integrated in the daily practice to evaluate nutritional interventions. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION All DRECO study materials have been approved by each of the IRB/IEC of all the sites enrolled (either approval of the own IRB/IEC or validating the approval of the IRB/IEC of another hospital). The study has been registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, on 27 June 2022. The results from this study will be presented at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Abstract
PURPOSE NUTRI-ONCOCARE algorithm has been developed to identify and treat patients with solid tumors who are at risk of malnutrition. The present study is aimed at analyzing users' opinion about this new tool and at assessing whether it is perceived as useful to achieve the behavioral change required for a successful integration of nutritional assessment into routine cancer care. METHODS Design thinking Double Diamond process was applied. A multidisciplinary team composed of ten potential end-users (four oncologists, three endocrinologists, one nutritionist, and two hospital pharmacists) participated in three different workshops aiming to analyze the different tasks included within the NUTRI-ONCOCARE algorithm. RESULTS Users agreed on the need to perform nutritional assessment around cancer diagnosis and through the course of the disease using standardized tools included in hospital nutritional protocols and involving healthcare professionals with nutrition expertise. Nutritional evaluation and intervention should be individual and comprehensive, considering not only nutritional parameters but also patients' functional status. According to participants' opinion, the implementation of nutritional screening in routine clinical practice is limited by the lack of time and staff to conduct nutritional assessments, the low level of nutrition expert participation, and the poor support provided by hospital managers, which are often unaware of nutrition's impact in cancer care. CONCLUSIONS Experts recognized the importance of considering nutritional status in cancer patients and identified the opportunity provided by the NUTRI-ONCOCARE algorithm for this purpose, as it meets main requirements for being used routinely in clinical practice.

Abstract
The NOA (Oncological Nutrition in Andalusia) project analyses the degree of integration and areas of improvement in implementing nutritional support in the care plans of cancer patients in Andalusia. The aim was to analyse nutritional interventions for better care of cancer patients and for the improvement of the management of malnutrition in cancer. A prospective evaluation of the implementation of two areas of improvement in nutrition was conducted in three hospitals. Data were collected from each hospital over a six-month period using an online platform. A standardised care plan was designed for hospitals in Andalusia, in which proposed improvements were devised and prioritised, selecting nutritional screening in oncology services and the participation of the Nutrition Support Team (NST) on the tumour boards, as well as the assessment of the patients presented at these sessions. Our results indicated an increase in the number of medical records with nutritional evaluation results six months later, regardless of the type of tumour or hospitalisation; and there was greater participation of the NST on the tumour boards, mainly for head and neck and oesophagogastric cases. Solutions for improvement have been pinpointed and implemented that have positively impacted the nutritional care plan in the course of oncological disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxiety and depression are common in patients with cancer. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients awaiting elective surgery and whether there is an association with their preoperative nutritional status and postoperative mortality. METHODS A prospective study was conducted on 215 patients with CRC proposed for surgery. Data about nutritional status were collected using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, while anxiety and depression symptoms data were collected using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). RESULTS HADS detected possible anxiety in 41.9% of patients, probable anxiety in 25.6%, possible depression in 21.9%, and probable depression in 7.9%. GLIM criteria found 116 (53.9%) patients with malnutrition. The HADS score for depression subscale was significantly higher in malnourished patients than in well-nourished (5.61 ± 3.65 vs. 3.95 ± 2.68; p = 0.001). After controlling for potential confounders, malnourished patients were 10.19 times more likely to present probable depression (95% CI 1.13-92.24; p = 0.039). Mortality was 1.9%, 4,2%, and 5.6% during admission and after 6 and 12 months, respectively. Compared to patients without depressive symptomatology, in patients with probable depression, mortality risk was 14.67 times greater (95% CI 1.54-140.21; p = 0.02) during admission and 6.62 times greater (95% CI 1.34-32.61; p = 0.02) after 6 months. CONCLUSIONS The presence of anxiety and depression symptoms in CRC patients awaiting elective surgery is high. There is an association between depression symptoms, preoperative nutritional status, and postoperative mortality.
