Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the association of a traditional Mexican diet score with risk of total, breast, and colorectal cancer among women of Mexican ethnic descent in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). METHODS Participants were WHI enrollees who self-identified as being of Mexican descent. Data from food frequency questionnaires self-administered at study baseline were used to calculate the MexD score, with higher scores indicating greater adherence to an a priori-defined traditional Mexican diet (high in dietary fiber, vegetables, and legumes). Incident cancers were self-reported by participants from 1993 to 2020 and adjudicated by trained physicians. We used multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Among 2,343 Mexican descent women (median baseline age: 59 years), a total of 270 cancers (88 breast, 37 colorectal) occurred during a mean follow-up of 14.4 years. The highest tertile of MexD score was associated with a lower risk of all-cancer incidence (HR: 0.67; 95% CI 0.49-0.91; p-trend: 0.01) and colorectal cancer (HR: 0.38; 95% CI 0.14-0.998; p-trend < 0.05), with each unit increase in the MexD score associated with a 6% lower risk of all-cancer incidence (HR: 0.94; 95% CI 0.88-0.99). There was no statistically significant association with risk of breast cancer. CONCLUSION Consumption of a traditional Mexican diet was associated with a significantly lower risk of all-cancer incidence and colorectal cancer. Confirmation of these findings in future studies is important, given the prevalence of colorectal cancer and a growing U.S. population of women of Mexican descent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During adolescence, diet quality reaches its lowest point compared to other childhood life stages. Acculturation is associated with decreased diet quality among many groups of US immigrant adults, but research is limited among adolescents. OBJECTIVES We investigated the associations between birthplace and length of time living in the United States, 2 proxy measures of acculturation, and diet quality among adolescents (12-19 years old). METHODS Data were from the NHANES (2007-2018), which included two 24-hour dietary recalls (n = 6113) to estimate Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) total scores and component scores. Multivariate linear regression and generalized linear models were performed to compare HEI-2015 total scores and component scores between US-born adolescents (n = 5342) and foreign-born adolescents with <5 years (n = 244), 5 to <10 years (n = 201), and ≥10 years (n = 290) of US residency. RESULTS Foreign-born adolescents with <5 years (53.3 ± 1.2), 5 to <10 years (51.4 ± 1.5), and ≥10 years of US residency (49.9 ± 0.8) had higher HEI-2015 total scores than US-born adolescents (47.0 ± 0.3; P < 0.0001) and higher component scores for total vegetables, seafood and plant proteins, and added sugars (P values ≤ 0.0001). Foreign-born adolescents with more years of US residency had higher component scores for total fruits, whole fruits, and saturated fats than those with fewer years of US residency. A sensitivity analysis revealed this pattern held for Mexican-American and other Hispanic adolescents. CONCLUSIONS Being born outside the United States and living in the United States for less time (among foreign-born adolescents) are associated with higher diet quality. Culturally informed health promotion programs may help to reduce diet-related disparities related to acculturation among adolescents.

Abstract
Mexican American adolescents have an increased risk for obesity compared to non-Hispanic whites (NHWs), especially as their degree of acculturation increases. Snack intakes can impact diet quality and may affect obesity risk, yet little is known about differences in snack intakes among NHW and Mexican American adolescents from different acculturation groups. This study compared diet quality and snack intakes among NHW and Mexican American adolescents from different acculturation groups. This study used cross-sectional data from 3636 Mexican American and NHW adolescents in the 2005-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Acculturation was defined based on generational status and language use. Outcomes were Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) score, daily energy intake from snacks, snack frequency, energy value of snacks, and percent contribution of snacks to total daily energy. Analysis of covariance was used to compare outcomes across groups, after adjustment for sex and income. In the full sample, mean HEI-2015 score was 45 ± 0.4. Non-Hispanic white adolescents had modestly poorer diet quality compared to US-born adolescents with a foreign-born parent and Mexican-born adolescents (P < 0.001). Mean daily snack intake was 583 ± 16 kcal. Items in the Snacks and Sweets and Beverages categories contributed more than half of the energy provided by snacks. Non-Hispanic white adolescents had a greater total snack intake compared to all language use at home groups, except equal Spanish and English use. Improving the types of foods consumed as snacks has the potential to partially mitigate differences in snack intakes and diet quality among non-Hispanic white and Mexican American adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Medical care alone cannot adequately improve population health or eliminate inequities; social determinants of health (SDH) must be addressed. This study's purpose was to describe the research, teaching, service, and clinical practice activities implemented by RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholars to act on the SDH. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey design was used with a sample of RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholars, chosen because they were provided specialized mentoring, grants, and other support that allowed them to explore SDH. RESULTS Respondents (n = 57) addressed SDH in their research (86.0%), teaching (68.4%), service (66.7%), and clinical practice (33.3%). Leading research foci were quality of health care (56.1%), social and physical environmental stressors (54.4%), and access to health care services (49.1%). Leading SDH areas in teaching were discrimination in society against vulnerable populations (54.4%), quality of health care received by vulnerable populations (50.9%), and vulnerable populations' access to health care services (50.9%). Service activities included addressing discrimination against diverse populations. Leading SDH areas in clinical practice were quality of health care received by vulnerable populations (28.1%), vulnerable populations' access to health care services (22.8%), and discrimination in society against vulnerable populations (19.3%). Respondents also addressed SDH through personal mentoring (71.9%); efforts to recruit and/or retain underrepresented faculty (59.6%); developing a diverse pipeline of nurses (59.6%); and participation on a diversity committee (40.4%). CONCLUSION The RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholars were able to leverage their awards to address SDH; however, further research is needed to assess the impact of the SDH work conducted. Knowledge from this study can be used as a road map for SDH elements and areas of professional work that nurses and other health professionals could address SDH in research, teaching, service, and practice.

Abstract
Background. Processes of antioxidant protection in different ethnicities, living in the same geographical conditions, are of undoubted scientific interest. The ratio of activity of oxidative processes and antioxidant components not only reflects, but also largely determines the metabolism and adaptive capabilities of the organism. The key issue in understanding the regulatory and adaptive role of lipid peroxidation reactions in the body is the idea of the existence of a certain balance with the antioxidant defense system.Aims: to study the features of the system of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant protection in adolescents of different ethnicities, living in Eastern Siberia.Materials and methods. Parameters of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant protection were determined in the blood serum by spectrophotometric methods.Results. We found that adolescent Buryat boys had statistically significant decrease in primary and secondary products of lipid peroxidation: ketodienes and conjugated trienes, malondialdehyde, and components of antioxidant protection: retinol, α-tocopherol, the level of total antioxidant activity of blood and reduced glutathione, in comparison with Caucasian adolescents. In Caucasian adolescents with endocrine disorders, there was a statistically significant increase in the level of ketodienes and conjugated trienes, as well as the activity of superoxide dismutase against the background of a decrease of reduced glutathione, tocopherol, and retinol. We revealed a significant increase in the concentration of ketodienes and conjugated trienes and a decrease of the oxidized glutathione in adolescents with endocrine disorders in comparison with healthy adolescents of Buryat ethnicity.Conclusions. Studying of the processes of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system of the organism can be used as an additional criterion for complex examination of practically healthy adolescents, which significantly enhance the representation about the adaptation possibilities of the organism to external conditions and can become a basis for effective examination of reproductive health in the future.

Abstract
Background: Dietary intake of phytonutrients present in fruits and vegetables, such as carotenoids, is associated with a lower risk of obesity and related traits, but the impact of genetic variation on these associations is poorly understood, especially in children.Objective: We estimated common genetic influences on serum carotenoid concentrations and obesity-related traits in Mexican American (MA) children.Design: Obesity-related data were obtained from 670 nondiabetic MA children, aged 6-17 y. Serum α- and β-carotenoid concentrations were measured in ∼570 (α-carotene in 565 and β-carotene in 572) of these children with the use of an ultraperformance liquid chromatography-photodiode array. We determined heritabilities for both carotenoids and examined their genetic relation with 10 obesity-related traits [body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, fat mass (FM), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting insulin and glucose, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance] by using family data and a variance components approach. For these analyses, carotenoid values were inverse normalized, and all traits were adjusted for significant covariate effects of age and sex.Results: Carotenoid concentrations were highly heritable and significant [α-carotene: heritability (h2) = 0.81, P = 6.7 × 10-11; β-carotene: h2 = 0.90, P = 3.5 × 10-15]. After adjusting for multiple comparisons, we found significant (P ≤ 0.05) negative phenotypic correlations between carotenoid concentrations and the following traits: BMI, WC, FM, and triglycerides (range: α-carotene = -0.19 to -0.12; β-carotene = -0.24 to -0.13) and positive correlations with HDL cholesterol (α-carotene = 0.17; β-carotene = 0.24). However, when the phenotypic correlations were partitioned into genetic and environmental correlations, we found marginally significant (P = 0.051) genetic correlations only between β-carotene and BMI (-0.27), WC (-0.30), and HDL cholesterol (0.31) after accounting for multiple comparisons. None of the environmental correlations were significant.Conclusions: The findings from this study suggest that the serum carotenoid concentrations were under strong additive genetic influences based on variance components analyses, and that the common genetic factors may influence β-carotene and obesity and lipid traits in MA children.

Abstract
Background Asthma and rhinitis are common childhood health conditions. Being an understudied and rapidly growing population in the US, Hispanic children have a varying risk for these conditions that may result from sociocultural (including acculturative factors), exposure and genetic diversities. Hispanic populations have varying contributions from European, Amerindian and African ancestries. While previous literature separately reported associations between genetic ancestry and acculturation factors with asthma, whether Amerindian ancestry and acculturative factors have independent associations with development of early-life asthma and rhinitis in Hispanic children remains unknown. We hypothesized that genetic ancestry is an important determinant of early-life asthma and rhinitis occurrence in Hispanic children independent of sociodemographic, acculturation and environmental factors. Methods Subjects were Hispanic children (5–7 years) who participated in the southern California Children’s Health Study. Data from birth certificates and questionnaire provided information on acculturation, sociodemographic and environmental factors. Genetic ancestries (Amerindian, European, African and Asian) were estimated based on 233 ancestry informative markers. Asthma was defined by parental report of doctor-diagnosed asthma. Rhinitis was defined by parental report of a history of chronic sneezing or runny or blocked nose without a cold or flu. Sample sizes were 1,719 and 1,788 for investigating the role of genetic ancestry on asthma and rhinitis, respectively. Results Children had major contributions from Amerindian and European ancestries. After accounting for potential confounders, per 25% increase in Amerindian ancestry was associated with 17.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.74–0.99) and 13.6% (95% CI: 0.79–0.98) lower odds of asthma and rhinitis, respectively. Acculturation was not associated with either outcome. Conclusions Earlier work documented that Hispanic children with significant contribution from African ancestry are at increased asthma risk; however, in Hispanic children who have little contribution from African ancestry, Amerindian ancestry was independently associated with lower odds for development of early-childhood asthma and rhinitis.
