Reservoir Effect of Textile Substrates on the Delivery of Essential Oils Microencapsulated by Complex Coacervation

Microcapsules are being used in textile substrates increasingly more frequently, availing a wide spectrum of possibilities that are relevant to future research trends. Biofunctional Textiles is a new field that should be carefully studied, especially when dealing with microencapsulated essential oils. In the final step, when the active principle is delivered, there are some possibilities to quantify and simulate its doses on the skin or in the environment. At that stage, there is a phenomenon that can help to better control the delivery and the reservoir effect of the textile substrate. Depending on the chemical characteristics of the molecule to be delivered, as well as the structure and chemical nature of the fabric where it has been applied, there is physicochemical retention exerted by fibers that strongly controls the final rate of principle active delivery to the external part of the textile substrate. The study of this type of effect in two different substrates (cotton and polyester) will be described here regarding two different essential oils microencapsulated and applied to the substrates using padding technology. The experimental results of the final drug delivery demonstrate this reservoir effect in both essential oils.

An extensive review on phenolic compounds and their potential estrogenic properties on skin physiology

Polyphenolic compounds constitute a diverse group of natural components commonly occurring in various plant species, known for their potential to exert both beneficial and detrimental effects. Additionally, these polyphenols have also been implicated as endocrine-disrupting (ED) chemicals, raising concerns about their widespread use in the cosmetics industry. In this comprehensive review, we focus on the body of literature pertaining to the estrogenic properties of ED chemicals, with a particular emphasis on the interaction of isoflavones with estrogen receptors. Within this review, we aim to elucidate the multifaceted roles and effects of polyphenols on the skin, exploring their potential benefits as well as their capacity to act as ED agents. By delving into this intricate subject matter, we intend to provoke thoughtful consideration, effectively opening a Pandora's box of questions for the reader to ponder. Ultimately, we invite the reader to contemplate whether polyphenols should be regarded as friends or foes in the realm of skincare and endocrine disruption.

Effects of konjac glucan-nan/low-acyl gellan edible coatings loaded thymol-β-cyclodextrin microcapsules on postharvest blueberry

This study developed an edible antimicrobial coating using a blend of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and low acyl gellan gum (LAG) hydrogel to incorporate thymol nanoparticles (TKL). The optimized TKL formulation (TKL60) comprised 0.22% thymol microcapsules (TMs), 0.075% total polysaccharide content (KGM:LAG = 1:2), and 99.63% distilled water. When applied to blueberries, TKL60 significantly extended their shelf life to 42 d at 2 ± 0.5 °C, tripling that of control fruit. TKL60 reduced decay rate, weight loss, and respiration rate, delayed softening and senescence during cold storage. It preserved the outer epidermis by retaining cuticular waxes, curbing lipid oxidation, and sustaining defense-related enzyme activities. Flavor analysis revealed altered volatile compound concentrations in TKL60-treated berries, including decreased terpenes and benzaldehyde, and increased esters and aldehydes like 2-methylbutanol, 3-methylbutanol, and linalool. Discriminant Analysis highlighted TKL60's efficacy in delaying aroma deterioration by over 21 d. TKL60 exhibits potential as a substitute for synthetic coatings and chemical insecticides.

Enhancement of Release and Solubility of Curcumin from Electrospun PEO-EC-PVP Tripolymer-Based Nanofibers: A Study on the Effect of Hydrogenated Castor Oil

This study reveals the state-of-the-art fabrication of a tripolymer-based electrospun nanofiber (NF) system to enhance the release, solubility, and transdermal penetration of curcumin (Cur) with the aid of in situ release of infused castor oil (Co). In this regard, Cur-loaded Co-infused polyethylene oxide (PEO), ethyl cellulose (EC), and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) tripolymer-based NF systems were developed to produce a hybridized transdermal skin patch. Weight percentages of 1-4% Cur and 3-10% of Co were blended with PEO-EC-PEO and PEO-EC-PVP polymer systems. The prepared NFs were characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR analysis, PXRD, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and XPS. Dialysis membranes and vertical Franz diffusion cells were used to study the in vitro drug release and transdermal penetration, respectively. The results indicated that maintaining a Cur concentration of 1-3 wt % with 3 wt % Co in both PEO-EC-Co-Cur@PEO and PEO-EC-Co-Cur@PVP gave rise to nanofibers with lowered diameters (144.83 ± 48.05-209.26 ± 41.80 nm and 190.20 ± 59.42-404.59 ± 45.31 nm). Lowered crystallinity observed from the PXRD patterns and the disappearance of exothermic peaks corresponding to the melting point of Cur suggested the formation of an amorphous NF structure. Furthermore, the XPS data revealed that the Cur loading will possibly take place at the inner interface of PEO-EC-Co-PEO and PEO-EC-Co-PVP NFs rather than on the surface. The beneficiary role of Co on the release and dermal penetration of Cur was further confirmed from the respective release data which indicated that PEO-EC-Co-Cur@PEO would lead to a rapid release (4-5 h), while PEO-EC-Co-Cur@PVP would lead to a sustained release over a period of 24 h in the presence of Co. Transdermal penetration of the released Cur was further evidenced with the development of color in the receiver compartment of the diffusion cell. DPPH results further corroborated that a sustained antioxidant activity is observed in the released Cur where the free-radical scavenging activity is intact even after subjecting to an electrospinning process and under extreme freeze-thaw conditions.

Microencapsulation of Ruellia tuberosa L. Aqueous Root Extracts Using Chitosan-Sodium Tripolyphosphate and Their In Vitro Biological Activities

The current study aims to perform microencapsulation of R. tuberosa L. extracts using chitosan crosslinked to sodium tripolyphosphate (NaTPP) as wall materials by spray drying and to analyze their in vitro biological activities. The influence of manufacturing conditions, like pH, chitosan concentration, and stirrer time, was assessed. Results showed that microcapsules prepared in pH 4 with a concentration of 0.1% (w/v) chitosan, and 90 min stirring time had 51.80% encapsulation efficiency and high in vitro biological activity. These were shown by high in vitro alpha amylase inhibition and antioxidant activity with IC₅₀ values of 50.65 μg/mL and 123.97 μg/mL, respectively. Releases of the bioactive compounds in microcapsules of R. tuberosa L. were carried out on phosphate buffer medium pH 2.2 and pH 7.4 with times release of 30, 60, 90, and 120 min. The bioactive compounds were released in pH 2.2 in 120 min at 2.48%. At pH 7.4, the active ingredients were more easily released, by 79.90% in 120 min. The microcapsules' morphology showed a rough surface with spherical forms and the average sizes were 53.41 μm. This study supports the essential role of microencapsulation in improving plant extracts with reserved biological activities.

Development of Microcapsule Bioactive Paper Loaded with Chinese Fir Essential Oil to Improve the Quality of Strawberries

Essential oils are natural antibacterial substances and have potential value for application in fruit and vegetable packaging. In this study, Chinese fir essential oil (CFEO) was microencapsulated to prepare food packaging materials for the first time to overcome its volatilization and oxidation shortcomings and to obtain a sustained-release form of the oil. CFEO was effectively encapsulated in gelatin and chitosan using the complex coacervation method, and the encapsulation efficiency, microstructure, infrared spectrum and thermal stability of the microcapsules were evaluated. Experiments confirmed that the microcapsules had some antibacterial activity. A bioactive paper was developed by combining CFEO microcapsules (CFEO-Ms) with paper-based material using the film-forming property of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The coated paper showed good mechanical, air permeability and moisture permeability properties. Environmental scanning electron microscopy confirmed that CFEO-Ms bonded well with PVA and was successfully introduced into the paper fiber after coating, forming an obvious coating film on the surface to facilitate the continuous release of CFEO. The shelf life of strawberries was significantly prolonged when the PVA-coated paper mixed with 3% CFEO-Ms was used for packaging. The results demonstrated that the CFEO-Ms coated paper has the potential to become an effective packaging material for the preservation of strawberries.

Self-coacervation of carboxymethyl chitosan as a pH-responsive encapsulation and delivery strategy

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)-based complex coacervate has attracted much attention in drug oral delivery due to its pH-responsive property. As a unique ampholyte polymer, the self-coacervation of CMCS has great research potential. In this work, CMCS self-coacervates were prepared by adjusting the pH of the CMCS aqueous solution close to its isoelectric point. The Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed that electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions were involved in the self-coacervation of CMCS. The obtained self-coacervates presented a dense surface structure, and were stable at a wide pH range of 3.0-6.0, and gradually dissolved under basic conditions. Although self-coacervation decreased the crystallinity and thermal stability of CMCS, the obtained coacervates showed excellent pH-responsive properties and ionic strength stability. We also investigated its potential in lactoferrin (LF) encapsulation and oral delivery. The CMCS self-coacervates exhibited a high encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 94.79 ± 0.49% and loading capacity (LC) of 26.29 ± 0.52% when the addition amount of LF was 2 mg. The simulated gastric digestion results demonstrated that CMCS self-coacervates could protect more than 80% of LF from hydrolysis and maintain the bioactivities of LF. Accordingly, the self-coacervation of CMCS could be used as a pH-responsive encapsulation and delivery strategy.

Chondro-inductive hyaluronic acid/chitosan coacervate-based scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering

Injuries related to articular cartilage are among the most challenging musculoskeletal problems because of poor repair capacity of this tissue. The lack of efficient treatments for chondral defects has stimulated research on cartilage tissue engineering applications combining porous biocompatible scaffolds with stem cells in the presence of external stimuli. This work presents the role of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) encapsulated-novel three-dimensional (3D) coacervate scaffolds prepared through complex coacervation between different chitosan salts (CHI) and sodium hyaluronate (HA). The 3D architecture of BMSC encapsulated scaffolds (HA/CHI) was shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to have an interconnected structure to allow cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Chondrogenic induction of encapsulated BMSCs within HA/CHI coacervates demonstrated remarkable cellular viability in addition to the elevated expression levels of chondrogenic markers such as sex determining region Y-box 9 protein (SOX9), aggrecan (ACAN), cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) and collagen type II (COL2A1) by immunofluorescence staining, qPCR and ELISA test. Collectively, HA/CHI coacervates are promising candidates for future use of these scaffolds in cartilage tissue engineering applications.

Propolis-Based Nanofiber Patches to Repair Corneal Microbial Keratitis

In this research, polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA)/gelatin (GEL)/propolis (Ps) biocompatible nanofiber patches were fabricated via electrospinning technique. The controlled release of Propolis, surface wettability behaviors, antimicrobial activities against the S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, and biocompatibility properties with the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were investigated in detail. By adding 0.5, 1, and 3 wt.% GEL into the 13 wt.% PVA, the morphological and mechanical results suggested that 13 wt.% PVA/0.5 wt.% GEL patch can be an ideal matrix for 3 and 5 wt.% propolis addition. Morphological results revealed that the diameters of the electrospun nanofiber patches were increased with GEL (from 290 nm to 400 nm) and Ps addition and crosslinking process cause the formation of thicker nanofibers. The tensile strength and elongation at break enhancement were also determined for 13 wt.% PVA/0.5 wt.% GEL/3 wt.% Ps patch. Propolis was released quickly in the first hour and arrived at a plateau. Cell culture and contact angle results confirmed that the 3 wt.% addition of propolis reinforced mesenchymal stem cell proliferation and wettability properties of the patches. The antimicrobial activity demonstrated that propolis loaded patches had antibacterial activity against the S. aureus, but for P. aeruginosa, more studies should be performed.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Encapsulation of Novel Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) in Biopolymer Matrices

Novel plant growth regulators (PGRs) based on the derivatives of dehydroamino acids 2,3-dehydroaspartic acid dimethyl ester (PGR1), Z-isomer of the potassium salt of 2-amino-3-methoxycarbonylacrylic acid (PGR2) and 1-methyl-3-methylamino-maleimide (PGR3) have been synthesized and their growth-regulating properties investigated. Laboratory testing revealed their plant growth-regulating activity. PGR1 showing the most stimulating activity on all laboratory tested cultures were used in field experiments. Results showed that PGR1 is a highly effective environmentally friendly plant growth regulator with effects on different crops. Biopolymeric microcapsule formulations (chitosan/alginate microcapsule loaded with PGR) suitable for application in agriculture were prepared and characterized. Physicochemical properties and release profiles of PGRs from microcapsule formulations depend on the molecular interactions between microcapsule constituents including mainly electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds. The differences in the microcapsule formulations structure did not affect the mechanism of PGRs release which was identified as diffusion through microcapsules. The obtained results opened a perspective for the future use of microcapsule formulations as new promising agroformulations with a sustained and target release for plant growth regulation.

Preparation and Characterization of Double-Layered Microcapsules Containing Nano-SiO2

The double-layered microencapsulation technology has been used in many fields. In this study, the double-layered microencapsulated anthocyanin of Passiflora edulis shells (APESs) was prepared via complex coacervation using gelatin and gum Arabic as the first wall materials (single-layered microcapsules (SMs)) and using gum Arabic containing nano-SiO2 as the second wall material (double-layered microcapsules (DMs)/nano-SiO2) to enhance the stability of the core material. Properties of microcapsules were analyzed on the basis of EE, morphology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), droplet size, moisture content, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the EE values of SMs, DMs, and DMs/nano-SiO2 were 96.12%, 97.24%, and 97.85%, respectively. DMs/nano-SiO2 had the lowest moisture content (2.17%). The average droplet size of DMs/nano-SiO2 (34.93 μm) was higher than those of SMs and DMs. DSC indicated that the melting temperature of DMs/nano-SiO2 was 73.61°C and 45.33°C higher than those of SMs and DMs, respectively. SEM demonstrated that DMs/nano-SiO2 had the smoothest surface compared with the other two kinds of microcapsules. The storage stability of APESs and their microcapsules indicated that the stability of the microcapsules was improved by adding DMs/nano-SiO2 into the wall material of microcapsules. These results indicated double-layered microcapsules containing silica nanoparticles contribute to the stability of the core material.

Nanosystems for the Encapsulation of Natural Products: The Case of Chitosan Biopolymer as a Matrix

Chitosan is a cationic natural polysaccharide, which has emerged as an increasingly interesting biomaterialover the past few years. It constitutes a novel perspective in drug delivery systems and nanocarriers' formulations due to its beneficial properties, including biocompatibility, biodegradability and low toxicity. The potentiality of chemical or enzymatic modifications of the biopolymer, as well as its complementary use with other polymers, further attract the scientific community, offering improved and combined properties in the final materials. As a result, chitosan has been extensively used as a matrix for the encapsulation of several valuable compounds. In this review article, the advantageous character of chitosan as a matrix for nanosystemsis presented, focusing on the encapsulation of natural products. A five-year literature review is attempted covering the use of chitosan and modified chitosan as matrices and coatings for the encapsulation of natural extracts, essential oils or pure naturally occurring bioactive compounds are discussed.
