Protective Effects of Salicylic Acid and Calcium Chloride on Sage Plants (Salvia officinalis L. and Salviaelegans Vahl) under High-Temperature Stress

Exogenous melatonin ameliorates heat damages by regulating growth, photosynthetic efficiency and leaf ultrastructure of carnation

Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is a floral crop that is highly valuable commercially. However, high temperatures adversely affect its growth and the quality of its cut flowers. Melatonin (MT) is a indole substance that can mitigate plant damage under heat stress. In this study, the leaves of carnation seedlings were sprayed with different concentrations of MT before exposure to high temperature. The indices of growth, physiological and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured and analyzed by the membership function method. The results showed that treatment with 100 μM MT was the most effective at ameliorating damage on carnation. We then analyzed the effects of 100 μM MT pretreatment on carnation at different time points of heat stress and found that this concentration of MT ameliorated the damage caused by heat stress, increased the content of photosynthetic pigments, enhanced the performance of photosystem II and improved photosynthesis. In addition, MT also reduced cell damage and lipid peroxidation, increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes and regulated the accumulation of osmotic substances in carnation. Moreover, MT increased the fresh/dry weight of stems and roots, promoted the opening of stomata, and protected the integrity of chloroplast structure of carnation. Compared with heat stress, pre-spraying with MT significantly down-regulated the transcription of a chlorophyll degradation gene and up-regulated the transcription of stress-related genes. Overall, this study provides a theoretical foundation for the mitigation of the adverse effects of exogenous MT under heat stress and proposes beneficial implications for the management of other plants subjected to global warming.

Effect of different seed priming agents on chromium accumulation, oxidative defense, glyoxalase system and mineral nutrition in canola (Brassica napus L.) cultivars

The present experiment was conducted to appraise the role of different seed priming agents in circumventing the negative impact of chromium (Cr) toxicity on canola plants. Chromium toxicity resulted in significant decline in photosynthetic pigments and growth attributes of two canola cultivars (Puriga and MS-007). Cr toxicity also resulted in higher oxidative stress mirrored as greater accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) superoxide radical (O₂^•‒), electrolyte leakage (EL) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Further, lipoxygenase enzyme activity that catalyzes the peroxidation of membrane lipids was also enhanced due to Cr toxicity. Canola plants also manifested impaired methylglyoxal (MG) detoxification due to the downregulation of glyoxalase enzymes (GlyI and II) under Cr stress. Seed priming treatments viz. osmo-priming with calcium chloride (CaCl₂) and hormonal priming with salicylic acid (SA) remarkably improved growth and chlorophyll content in both canola cultivars under Cr toxicity as compared to other priming treatments such as hydro-priming, redox priming (H₂O₂) and chemical priming (Se; selenium). Moreover, CaCl₂ and SA seed priming also resulted in lower oxidative stress and improved enzymatic (SOD, POD, CAT, APX, GR, GST) and non-enzymatic (GSH, phenolics, flavonoids, proline) antioxidant system of both cultivars under Cr toxicity. Further, hormonal and osmo-priming strengthened glyoxalase and antioxidant systems, thus improving reactive oxygen species (ROS) and MG detoxification. In this background, the cultivar Puriga is considered Cr tolerant as it exhibited better growth and lesser oxidative stress in both seed priming and non-primed conditions under Cr toxicity than cv. MS-007.

Antagonist Temperature Variation Affects the Photosynthetic Parameters and Secondary Metabolites of Ocimum basilicum L. and Salvia officinalis L

Climate change is one of the main challenges for actual and future generations. Global warming affects plants and animals and is responsible for considerable crop loss. This study studied the influence of antagonist successive stresses, cold-heat and heat-cold, on two medicinal plants Ocimum basilicum L. and Salvia officinalis L. The photosynthetic parameters decreased for plants under the variation of subsequent stress. Net assimilation rates and stomatal conductance to water vapor are more affected in the case of plants under cold-heat consecutive stress than heat-cold successive stress. Emissions of volatile organic compounds have been enhanced for plants under successive stress when compared with control plants. Chlorophyll concentrations for plants under successive stress decreased for basil and sage plants. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were not affected by the successive stresses when compared with the plants under only one type of treatment.

Influence of Climate-Related Environmental Stresses on Economically Important Essential Oils of Mediterranean Salvia sp

Salvia L. is the largest genus in the family Lamiaceae, with about 1,000 species and a nearly cosmopolitan distribution. Salvia species are used in both traditional and conventional medicines, and other numerous industries, such as spices and perfumes. The number of papers dealing with Salvia exceeds 12,000 and mostly investigates their chemical composition and bioactive properties. A smaller proportion of papers however consider environmental factors, mostly on the effects of microclimate conditions on its geographic distribution along an altitudinal or longitudinal gradient, and very few studies can be found on the effects of emerging stressors on the commercial production of sages of medicinal and economical importance. Here, we summarize available data on the essential oil composition of three economically important sages from the Mediterranean area, that is, Salvia officinalis, Salvia officinalis subsp. lavandulifolia, and Salvia fruticosa, and the effects of climate-related environmental stressors on their chemical profiles. Environmental stress factors, such as an increase in soil salinity and aridity, and changes in annual average temperatures, are going to impose a serious risk on the commercial production of sage essential oils, which are commercially produced in many European countries. This review highlights the already confirmed effects of these stressors on three selected Salvia species and consequently the importance of mitigating the effects of climate change on the commercial production of these essential oils.
