The Optical Response of a Mediterranean Shrubland to Climate Change: Hyperspectral Reflectance Measurements during Spring

Hyperspectral Indices Developed from Fractional-Order Derivative Spectra Improved Estimation of Leaf Chlorophyll Fluorescence Parameters

Chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) parameters offer valuable insights into quantifying energy transfer and allocation at the photosystem level. However, tracking their variation based on reflectance spectral information remains challenging for large-scale remote sensing applications and ecological modeling. Spectral preprocessing methods, such as fractional-order derivatives (FODs), have been demonstrated to have advantages in highlighting spectral features. In this study, we developed and assessed the ability of novel spectral indices derived from FOD spectra and other spectral transformations to retrieve the ChlF parameters of various species and leaf groups. The results obtained showed that the empirical spectral indices were of low reliability in estimating the ChlF parameters. In contrast, the indices developed from low-order FOD spectra demonstrated a significant improvement in estimation. Furthermore, the incorporation of species specificity enhanced the tracking of the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of sunlit leaves (R2 = 0.61, r = 0.79, RMSE = 0.15, MAE = 0.13), the fraction of PSII open centers (qL) of shaded leaves (R2 = 0.50, r = 0.71, RMSE = 0.09, MAE = 0.08), and the fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF) of shaded leaves (R2 = 0.71, r = 0.85, RMSE = 0.002, MAE = 0.001). Our study demonstrates the potential of FOD spectra in capturing variations in ChlF parameters. Nevertheless, given the complexity and sensitivity of ChlF parameters, it is prudent to exercise caution when utilizing spectral indices for tracking them.

Proximal hyperspectral sensing of abiotic stresses in plants

Recent attempts, advances and challenges, as well as future perspectives regarding the application of proximal hyperspectral sensing (where sensors are placed within 10 m above plants, either on land-based platforms or in controlled environments) to assess plant abiotic stresses have been critically reviewed. Abiotic stresses, caused by either physical or chemical reasons such as nutrient deficiency, drought, salinity, heavy metals, herbicides, extreme temperatures, and so on, may be more damaging than biotic stresses (affected by infectious agents such as bacteria, fungi, insects, etc.) on crop yields. The proximal hyperspectral sensing provides images at a sub-millimeter spatial resolution for doing an in-depth study of plant physiology and thus offers a global view of the plant's status and allows for monitoring spatio-temporal variations from large geographical areas reliably and economically. The literature update has been based on 362 research papers in this field, published from 2010, most of which are from four years ago and, in our knowledge, it is the first paper that provides a comprehensive review of the applications of the technique for the detection of various types of abiotic stresses in plants.

The Role of Gorse (Ulex parviflorus Pourr. Scrubs) in a Mediterranean Shrubland Undergoing Climate Change: Approach by Hyperspectral Measurements

The goal of this study was to observe the neighbor effect of Gorse, a plant of the Fabaceae family, on three typical species of Mediterranean shrubland: kermes oak, white Cistus and rosemary. For this purpose, a hyperspectral analysis and the application of vegetation indices (VIs) were carried out. We provide the spectral signature of Gorse, which differs mainly from that of its companion species in the band between 700 and 1350 nm. This supposed Gorse effect was tested in natural conditions and in conditions of forced drought to simulate the effects of the climate change predicted for the Mediterranean Basin. Field spectrometry demonstrated the existence of such interactions between the four species. In control stands, the presence of Gorse significantly modifies the spectral responses of kermes, white Cistus and rosemary, mainly in the near-infrared region (700-1350 nm). Both tri- and tetra-specific plant assemblages also exhibited spectral changes, suggesting an indirect effect of Gorse. Under drought conditions, one-way ANOVA followed by Fisher's LSD test led us to identify the features involved in plants' coexistence with Gorse. The Cistus albidus reflectance spectrum was clearly increased in the presence of Gorse in rain-exclusion conditions. The application of several VIs allowed us to extract new information on the variation of spectral signatures. Unexpectedly, nitrogen supply by Gorse was not shown, except for Cistus, as shown by the VI NDVI (N) analysis. However, this study proved that Gorse can modify the behavior of its companion species in controls, but also in drought conditions, by increasing their photosynthesis activity (NIRvP) and water content (ratio R975/R900). Gorse therefore appears as a key species in the ecosystem of the Mediterranean shrubland, but its high vulnerability to drought leaves a vacant ecological niche in plant communities. While the spectral reflectance increases linearly with the specific richness in the lack of any disturbance, by contrast, climate aridification imposes a double reciprocal profile. This clearly means that multispecific plant communities cope better with climate change. Nevertheless, knowledge of the underlying mechanisms requires further structural, chemical, and biochemical investigation.
