Recent Advances of Porous Materials Based on Cyclodextrin

Porous materials have attracted significant attention because of their rising applications in many fields. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are suitable building units in the fabrication of porous materials owing to their intrinsic nanoporous structure, easy modification, and biocompatibility, which may result in the formation of CD-based organic frameworks (including cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) and cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks (CD-COFs)), and CD-based polymer hybrid porous materials. This review focuses on the recent progress in the fabrication and applications of CD-based porous materials with novel structures and functionalities.

Enhanced radiotherapy efficacy of breast cancer multi cellular tumor spheroids through in-situ fabricated chitosan-zinc oxide bio-nanocomposites as radio-sensitizing agents

Overwhelming evidence has shown that three-dimensional multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTSs) as a mimic of in-vivo tumor can accurately exhibit cellular responses to treatments. So, we compared the capability of pure zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) and chitosan-ZnO bio-nanocomposites (CS-ZnO BNCs) for enhancing the radiosensitization of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells (BCCs) in the 3D-MCTSs model. ZnO-NPs and CS-ZnO BNCs were synthesized by a facile co-precipitation method. FE-SEM images revealed that the uniform spherical ZnO-NPs with an average diameter of 35 nm were successfully dispersed on chitosan. MDA-MB-231 MCTSs which were formed in a non-adherent culture plate, possessed functional features of in-vivo tumor. The priority of such culture method to conventionally used 2D monolayer (or parental) cell culture is the mimicking of tumor microenvironment. The toxicity of CS-ZnO BNCs and ZnO-NPs against the MDA-M-231 BCCs was evaluated using MTT-colorimetric assay, which demonstrated superior biocompatibility of CS-ZnO BNCs compared to pure ZnO-NPs (even at high concentration of 100 μg/mL). Survival fraction analysis of cells under clinical X-ray irradiation (6 MV) showed that MCTSs had a higher radioresistance compared to parental cells. Besides, the clonogenic potential of irradiated MCTSs was significantly decreased by the addition of CS-ZnO BNCs similar to that of monolayer cells. The sensitivity enhancement ratios (SER) for MCTSs and monolayer cells were calculated 1.5 and 1.63, respectively. Further, tracking of radiobiological properties and apoptosis induction of MCTSs showed that CS-ZnO BNCs not only could lead to the creation of higher radiation-induced complex DNA break and apoptosis death in MCTSs, but also weakened DNA repair mechanisms. It was found that non-toxic concentration of CS-ZnO BNCs has promising potential to enhance radiosensitivity of resistant-MCTSs as a superior in-vitro tumor model. So, CS-ZnO BNCs can be a prominent candidate for overcoming the resistance of BCCs to radiotherapy.

Sensing of mercury and silver ions using branched Au nanoparticles prepared by hyperbranched polyethylenimine fabricated and capped AuNPs seeds

Branched AuNPs usually have two or more local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption bands due to their structural anisotropy, and the LSPR performance is more sensitive to the changes of environmental refractive index than that of spherical AuNPs. The design and preparation of branched AuNPs as colorimetric probes is expected to improve the selectivity and sensitivity of detection of targets. In this paper, branched AuNPs were innovatively synthesized via hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HPEI) fabricated and capped AuNPs as seeds and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as template agent. The branched AuNPs were characterized by TEM, DLS, zeta potentials and UV-vis spectra. Using the branched AuNPs as a colorimetric probe, the detection system for Hg²⁺and Ag⁺showed bright color changes from blue to orange and blue to green based on the morphological evolution of branched AuNPs. The branched AuNPs could selectively detect Hg²⁺and Ag⁺at concentrations as low as 77 and 140 nM, respectively. Moreover, this unusual colorimetric method has been successfully used in real water samples and has great potential as a simple, rapid, sensitive and selective method for the detection of Hg²⁺and Ag⁺.

Thermal Conductivity and Stability of Hydrocarbon-Based Nanofluids with Palladium Nanoparticles Dispersed by Modified Hyperbranched Polyglycerol

Palladium nanoparticles, which were prepared by modified hyperbranched polyglycerol (mHPG) as stabilizers, can be dispersed well in nonpolar organic solvents and form highly stable nanofluids. The influences of three mHPG products modified with cyclohexanethiol (CSHPG), dodecanethiol (DSHPG), and octadecanethiol (OSHPG) on the preparation and stability of the palladium nanoparticles were investigated. The stability and thermal conductivity enhancement of the hydrocarbon-based nanofluids with Pd@mHPG (Pd@CSHPG, Pd@DSHPG, and Pd@OSHPG) compared to the corresponding base fluid were investigated at different temperatures. The average diameters of nanoparticles stabilized by CSHPG, DSHPG, and OSHPG are within 2.7-3.6 nm. The palladium nanoparticles could be dispersed well in the nonpolar base fluid such as decalin. The nanofluids with Pd@DSHPG and Pd@OSHPG could remain stable for up to 330 days at room temperature. The nanofluid with Pd@DSHPG or Pd@OSHPG could be stable for more than 24 h at 110 °C. The thermal conductivity of the nanofluids improved with increasing temperature and the mass fraction of nanoparticles compared to the corresponding base fluid. The long alkyl chain-modified HPG can give better protection for nanoparticles from agglomeration and assist metal nanoparticles in enhancing the thermal conductivity of nanofluids.

Temperature/pH Smart Nanofibers with Excellent Biocompatibility and Their Dual Interactions Stimulus-Responsive Mechanism

Novel nanosized biomass-based pH- and temperature-responsive cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF-HPEI-IBAm) were designed and prepared by grafting hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HPEI) modified with isobutyramide (IBAm) groups (HPEI-IBAm) onto carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs). The as-prepared TOCNF-HPEI-IBAm possessed excellent biocompatibility and pH- and temperature-responsive properties. TOCNF-HPEI-IBAm showed a rapid wettability conversion from hydrophilic (WCA = 41.1°, WCA = 70.7°) to hydrophobic (WCA = 147.3°, WCA = 142.2°) in response to changes in pH and temperature from acidic conditions to alkaline conditions and from lower to higher temperatures. In addition, it possesses strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Listeria (Eb ≥ 97%). The amount of DOX loaded in TOCNF-HPEI-IBAm was 642.52 mg/g, and the maximum amount of DOX released was 39.30% at pH = 3.0 within 9 h. Furthermore, the dual interactions stimulus-responsive mechanism was revealed to be attributed to the expansion and collapse of the molecular chains of TOCNF-HPEI-IBAm in response to temperature and pH through mutual promotion and inhibition.

A recyclable colorimetric probe: in situ fabrication of highly stable HPEI–AuNPs for selective Ag+ detection

A highly stable and recyclable AuNP-based colorimetric sensor was prepared by an in situ reduction reaction and can detect Ag⁺ with high selectivity.

Highly Sensitive and Selective Colorimetric Detection of Creatinine Based on Synergistic Effect of PEG/Hg2+-AuNPs

A colorimetric sensor, based on the synergistic coordination effect on a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) platform has been developed for the determination of creatinine. The sensor selects citrate stabilized AuNPs as a platform, polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a decorator, and Hg²⁺ as a linkage to form a colorimetric probe system (PEG/Hg²⁻–AuNPs). By forming hydrogen bond between the oxygen-containing functional groups of PEG and citrate ions on the surface of AuNPs, this probe shows good stability. PEG coordinated with Hg²⁺ synergistically and specifically on the surface of dispersed AuNPs, and the existence of creatinine could induce the aggregation of AuNPs with a corresponding color change and an obvious absorption peak shift within 5 min. This PEG/Hg²⁺–AuNPs probe towards creatinine shows high sensitivity, and a good linear relationship (R² = 0.9948) was obtained between A_{620–522 nm} and creatinine concentration, which can achieve the quantitative calculations of creatinine. The limit of detection (LOD) of this PEG/Hg2+–AuNPs probe was estimated to be 9.68 nM, lower than that of many other reported methods. Importantly, the sensitive probe can be successfully applied in a urine simulating fluid sample and a bovine serum sample. The unique synergistic coordination sensing mechanism applied in the designation of this probe further improves its high selectivity and specificity for the detection of creatinine. Thus, the proposed probe may give new inspirations for colorimetric detection of creatinine and other biomolecules.
