Butyl Rubber Nanocomposites with Monolayer MoS₂ Additives: Structural Characteristics, Enhanced Mechanical, and Gas Barrier Properties

Nanocarbon Black and Molybdenum Disulfide Hybrid Filler System for the Enhancement of Fracture Toughness and Electromechanical Sensing Properties in the Silicone Rubber-Based Energy Harvester

Recently, hybrid fillers have been found to be more advantageous in energy-harvesting composites. This study investigated the mechanical and electromechanical performances of silicone rubber-based composites made from hybrid fillers containing conductive nanocarbon black (NCB) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂). A hybrid filler system containing only 3 phr (per hundred grams of rubber) MoS₂ and 17 phr NCB provided higher fracture strain, better tensile strength, and excellent toughness values compared to the 20 phr NCB-only-filled and 5 phr MoS₂-only-filled rubber composites. The chemical cross-link densities suggest that NCB promoted the formation of cross-links, whereas MoS₂ slightly reduced the cross-link density. The higher mechanical properties in the hybrid filler systems suggest that the filler particles were more uniformly distributed, which was confirmed by the scanning electron microscope study. Uniformly distributed filler particles with moderate cross-link density in hybrid filler systems greatly improved the fracture strain and fracture toughness. For example, the hybrid filler with a 17:3 ratio of NCB to MoS₂ showed a 184% increment in fracture toughness, and a 93% increment in fracture strain, compared to the 20 phr NCB-only-filled composite. Regarding electromechanical sensing with 2 kPa of applied cyclic pressure, the hybrid filler (17:3 CB to MoS₂) performed significantly better (~100%) than the 20 phr NCB-only compound. This may have been due to the excellent distribution of conducting NCB networks and piezoelectric MoS₂ that caused symmetric charging-discharging in the toughened hybrid composite. Thus, hybrid composites with excellent fatigue resistance can find dynamic applications, such as in blood pressure measurement.

Graphene nanoplatelets and other 2D-materials as protective means against the fading of coloured inks, dyes and paints

The present work demonstrates the ability of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and other two-dimensional materials (2DMs) like tungsten disulfide (WS2), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) to act as protective barriers against the fading of architectural paints and also inks/paints used in art. The results present a new approach for improving the lightfastness of colours of artworks and painted indoor/outdoor wall surfaces taking advantage of the remarkable properties of 2DMs. As shown herein, commercial inks and architectural paints of different colours doped with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and other 2DMs, exhibit a superior resistance to fading under ultraviolet radiation or even under exposure to visible light. A spectroscopic study on these inks and dyes reveals that the peaks which are characteristic of the colour pigments are less affected from aging/fading when the GNPs and the other 2DMs are present. The protection mechanism for the GNPs and the other 2DMs differs. For GNPs, mainly their high surface area which leads to free radicals scavenging (especially hydroxyl radicals), and secondarily their UV absorption, are responsible for their protection effects, while for GO, a transition to rGO structures and consequently to 'smart' paints can be observed after the performed aging routes. In this way, the paint gets improved by time preventing or slowing its own fading and decolorization. For the other 2DMs, the transition-metal dichalcogenides performed better than hBN, even though they all absorb in the UV region. This can be ascribed to the facts that the formers also absorb in the visible, while hBN does not, while most importantly, they can trap reactive oxygen species (ROS) and corrosive gases in their structure as opposed to hBN. By conducting colorimetric measurements, we have discovered that the lifetime of the as-developed 2DM-doped inks and paints can be extended by up to ∼40%.

MoS2 based nanomaterials: Advanced antibacterial agents for future

Bacterial infections are yet another serious threat to human health. Misuse or overuse of conventional antibiotics has led to the arrival of various super resistant bacteria along with many serious side effects to human body. In this exigent circumstance, the use of nanomaterial based antibacterial agents is one of the most appropriate solutions to fight against bacteria thereby causing an inhibition to bacterial proliferation. Recent studies show that, due to the large surface area, high biocompatibility, strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption and low cytotoxicity, molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂), an extraordinary member in the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is extensively explored in the obliteration of many drug resistant bacteria, photothermal therapy and drug delivery. MoS₂ based nanomaterials can effectively prevent bacterial growth through many mechanisms. Through this review, we have tried to provide an inclusive knowledge on the recent progress of antibacterial studies in MoS₂ based nanomaterials including MoS₂ nanosheets, nanoflowers, quantum dot (QD), hybrid nanocomposites and polymer nanocomposites. Moreover, toxicity of MoS₂ based nanomaterials is described at the end of the review.

Sustainable Boron Nitride Nanosheet-Reinforced Cellulose Nanofiber Composite Film with Oxygen Barrier without the Cost of Color and Cytotoxicity

This paper introduces a boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS)-reinforced cellulose nanofiber (CNF) film as a sustainable oxygen barrier film that can potentially be applied in food packaging. Most commodity plastics are oxygen-permeable. CNF exhibits an ideal oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of <1 cc/m²/day in highly controlled conditions. A CNF film typically fabricated by the air drying of a CNF aqueous solution reveals an OTR of 19.08 cc/m²/day. The addition of 0⁻5 wt % BNNS to the CNF dispersion before drying results in a composite film with highly improved OTR of 4.7 cc/m²/day, which is sufficient for meat and cheese packaging. BNNS as a 2D nanomaterial increases the pathway of oxygen gas and reduces the chances of pinhole formation during film fabrication involving water drying. In addition, BNNS improves the mechanical properties of the CNF films (Young's modulus and tensile strength) without significant elongation reductions, probably due to the good miscibility of CNF and BNNS in the aqueous solution. Addition of BNNS also produces negligible color change, which is important for film aesthetics. An in vitro cell experiment was performed to reveal the low cytotoxicity of the CNF/BNNS composite. This composite film has great potential as a sustainable high-performance food-packaging material.
