The Drop-in-Drop Encapsulation in Chitosan and Sodium Alginate as a Method of Prolonging the Quality of Linseed Oil

Improving the storage and oxidative stability of essential fatty acids by different encapsulation methods; a review

Linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid are the only essential fatty acids (EFAs) known to the human body. Other fatty acids (FAs) of the omega-6 and omega-3 families originate from linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid, respectively, by the biological processes of elongation and desaturation. In diets with low fish consumption or vegetarianism, these FAs play an exclusive role in providing two crucial FAs for maintaining our body's vital functions; docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid. However, these polyunsaturated FAs are inherently sensitive to oxidation, thereby adversely affecting the storage stability of oils containing them. In this study, we reviewed encapsulation as one of the promising solutions to increase the stability of EFAs. Accordingly, five main encapsulation techniques could be classified: (i) spray drying, (ii) freeze drying, (iii) emulsification, (iv) liposomal entrapment, and (v) other methods, including electrospinning/spraying, complex coacervation, etc. Among these, spray drying was the frequently applied technique for encapsulation of EFAs, followed by freeze dryers. In addition, maltodextrin and gum Arabic were the main wall materials in carriers. Paying attention to industrial scalability and lower cost of the encapsulation process by the other methods are the important aspects that should be given more attention in the future.

Changes in the quality of flaxseed oil powder produced by incorporating with microcrystalline cellulose and thyme

Flaxseed oil is a high nutrition oil, rich in ω-3 fatty acid, tocopherols and phenolic compounds. However, it is prone to oxidation due to its high unsaturation which needs pretreatments to be easily introduce to the market. In this study, flaxseed oil was converted to powder form by mixing with microcrystalline cellulose (MC) and thyme powder to produce flaxseed oil powder. For this purpose, 3 different levels of thyme powder (5%, 10% and 15% of oil) were mixed with oil, followed by mixing with different proportions of MC (50:50, 50:75, 50:100 (oil:MC)) and stored for 90 days at 25 °C and 4 °C. Results indicated that the total phenolic compounds (23.2-91.2 mg GAE/100 g), chlorophyll (9-63.6 mg/kg), and carotenoid (4.4-9.9 mg/kg) contents increased with the incorporation of thyme powder into the flaxseed oil on the first day in 25 °C and 4 °C. Also during 90 days storage, phenolic compound (21.8%), chlorophyll (32.5%) and carotenoid (24%) decreased in both 25 °C and 4 °C temperatures. The results confirmed that adding thyme powder to samples decreased acidity and peroxide value in compare with control. Using thyme as a natural antioxidant and also transforming the oil to powder form by MC increased the oxidative stability in compare with control. The produced high stable flaxseed oil powder has the potential to be used directly on food products like salads or to be used in different food formulations to fortify them with natural antioxidants and ω-3 essential fatty acids.

Alginate Based Core-Shell Capsules Production through Coextrusion Methods: Recent Applications

Encapsulation is used in various industries to protect active molecules and control the release of the encapsulated materials. One of the structures that can be obtained using coextrusion encapsulation methods is the core-shell capsule. This review focuses on coextrusion encapsulation applications for the preservation of oils and essential oils, probiotics, and other bioactives. This technology isolates actives from the external environment, enhances their stability, and allows their controlled release. Coextrusion offers a valuable means of preserving active molecules by reducing oxidation processes, limiting the evaporation of volatile compounds, isolating some nutrients or drugs with undesired taste, or stabilizing probiotics to increase their shelf life. Being environmentally friendly, coextrusion offers significant application opportunities for the pharmaceutical, food, and agriculture sectors.

Fabrication of Encapsulated Gemini Surfactants

(1) Background: Encapsulation of surfactants is an innovative approach that allows not only protection of the active substance, but also its controlled and gradual release. This is primarily used to protect metallic surfaces against corrosion or to create biologically active surfaces. Gemini surfactants are known for their excellent anticorrosion, antimicrobial and surface properties; (2) Methods: In this study, we present an efficient methods of preparation of encapsulated gemini surfactants in form of alginate and gelatin capsules; (3) Results: The analysis of infrared spectra and images of the scanning electron microscope confirm the effectiveness of encapsulation; (4) Conclusions: Gemini surfactants in encapsulated form are promising candidates for corrosion inhibitors and antimicrobials with the possibility of protecting the active substance against environmental factors and the possibility of controlled outflow.

Alginate: From Food Industry to Biomedical Applications and Management of Metabolic Disorders

Initially used extensively as an additive and ingredient in the food industry, alginate has become an important compound for a wide range of industries and applications, such as the medical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors. In the food industry, alginate has been used to coat fruits and vegetables, as a microbial and viral protection product, and as a gelling, thickening, stabilizing or emulsifying agent. Its biocompatibility, biodegradability, nontoxicity and the possibility of it being used in quantum satis doses prompted scientists to explore new properties for alginate usage. Thus, the use of alginate has been expanded so as to be directed towards the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, where studies have shown that it can be used successfully as biomaterial for wound, hydrogel, and aerogel dressings, among others. Furthermore, the ability to encapsulate natural substances has led to the possibility of using alginate as a drug coating and drug delivery agent, including the encapsulation of probiotics. This is important considering the fact that, until recently, encapsulation and coating agents used in the pharmaceutical industry were limited to the use of lactose, a potentially allergenic agent or gelatin. Obtained at a relatively low cost from marine brown algae, this hydrocolloid can also be used as a potential tool in the management of diabetes, not only as an insulin delivery agent but also due to its ability to improve insulin resistance, attenuate chronic inflammation and decrease oxidative stress. In addition, alginate has been recognized as a potential weight loss treatment, as alginate supplementation has been used as an adjunct treatment to energy restriction, to enhance satiety and improve weight loss in obese individuals. Thus, alginate holds the promise of an effective product used in the food industry as well as in the management of metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity. This review highlights recent research advances on the characteristics of alginate and brings to the forefront the beneficial aspects of using alginate, from the food industry to the biomedical field.

Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of omega-3 rich oils/curcumin nanoemulsions loaded in chitosan and alginate-based microbeads

Omega-3 fatty acids can be considered as potential alternative therapeutic agents because of their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Two investigated omega-3 rich oils (flaxseed or fish) have been nanoemulsified with and without the natural antioxidant (curcumin, Cur) followed by their incorporation into crosslinked polymeric microbeads. The microbeads were developed from chitosan (CS), alginate (AL) and their combination (CSAL). Results indicated that the mean droplet diameter of the plain and Cur-loaded nanoemulsions ranged from 62.3 to 111.29 nm. The microbeads produced from AL, CS and their combination without Cur had predominantly shriveled surfaces compared to Cur-loaded ones. Addition of Cur was found to enhance oxidative stability, encapsulation efficiency, loading capacity, and antioxidant activity of the formulated microbeads. Plain fish oil revealed more antibacterial activity than plain flaxseed oil. Fish oil nanoemulsion-in-AL microbeads had more antibacterial activity than nanoemulsions of flaxseed oil-in-AL, fish oil-in-CS and the combined (CSAL) microbeads. However, flaxseed oil nanoemulsion-in-CS microbeads showed higher antibacterial activity than nanoemulsions of fish oil-in-CS, flaxseed oil-in-AL and the combined microbeads. The obtained results suggested the suitability of the formulated nanoemulsions-loaded microbeads to be used in food and pharmaceuticals products.

Chitosan Grafted Adsorbents for Diclofenac Pharmaceutical Compound Removal from Single-Component Aqueous Solutions and Mixtures

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the synthesis of some cross-linked carboxyl-grafted chitosan derivatives to be used as selective adsorbents for diclofenac (DCF) pharmaceutical compounds from aqueous mixtures. Four different materials were synthesized using succinic anhydride (CsSUC), maleic anhydride (CsMAL), itaconic acid (CsITA), and trans-aconitic acid (CsTACON) as grafting agents. After synthesis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed before and after DCF adsorption. In addition, a complete adsorption evaluation was carried out for all materials studying some important parameters. The optimum pH was 4; the amino groups of DCF can be protonated at pH = 4 (–NH⁺), so this groups can easily attract the clear negatively carboxyl moieties (–COO⁻) of the chitosan adsorbents. The Q_m for CsTACON was higher than those of the other materials, at all temperatures studied. By altering the temperature from 25 to 35 °C, an increase (16%) of Q_m (from 84.56 to 98.34 mg g⁻¹) was noted, while similar behavior was revealed after a further increase of temperature from 35 to 45 °C, improving by 5% (from 98.34 to 102.75 mg g⁻¹). All isotherms were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, and Langmuir-Freundlich (L-F) models). In addition, a kinetic model was proposed taking into account not only the interactions but also the diffusivity of the molecule (DCF) into the polymeric network. The behavior of the prepared chitosan materials in simultaneously removing other compounds (synergetic or antagonistic) was also evaluated by experiments performed in mixtures. DCF presented the highest removal from the mixture in the order: CsTACON (92.8%) > CsITA (89.5%) > CsSUC (80.9%) > CsMAL (66.2%) compared to other pharmaceutical compounds (salicylic acid, ibuprofen and ketoprofen). Desorption was achieved by using different eluants (either water or organic). The highest desorption ability was found for acetone (100% for CsTACON, CsSUC, CsMAL and 77% for CsITA) for all materials.
