Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) have been discovered to provide an efficient solution to the limited application of ester aroma molecules used in food, tobacco, and medication due to their strong smell and unstable storage. This work combined molecular modeling and experimental to analyze the conformation and controlled release of isomeric ester aroma compounds/β-CD inclusion complexes (ICs). The investigation revealed that ester aroma compounds could be effectively encapsulated within the β-CD cavity, forming ICs with low binding affinity. Furthermore, the key driving forces in ICs were identified as hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions through theoretical simulation. Results from the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments confirmed the intermolecular interaction predicted by the molecular model. Notably, the release rate of aroma compounds from L-menthyl acetate/β-CD (LMA/β-CD) IC exceeded that of terpinyl acetate/β-CD (TA/β-CD) IC. This difference is attributed to the length of the chain of aroma molecules and the variation in the position of functional groups, influencing the stable formation of ICs with β-CD. These findings hold potential implications for refining the application of ICs across diverse industries.

Abstract
The flammability of bio-derived poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) greatly limits its application and eco-friendly multifunctional fire-fighting PLA-based composites are highly desired. In this work, a fully bio-based modified CS (C-CS) and commercially available eco-friendly ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were used as a synergistic flame retardant agent (C-CS/APP) to investigate its effects on fire-proofing performance and diverse properties of the PLA. The PLA/5%C-CS/5%APP composite exhibited excellent fire-resistant performance with anti-droplet, smoke-suppression and self-extinguishing property, and its limited oxygen index enhanced by 37 % (compared with neat PLA). This composite reached the highest V-0 fire safety rating, and its peak of heat release rate and total smoke production reduced by 26.5 % and 68.3 %, respectively. In addition, the char residue yield after the cone calorimeter test increased by 46 times in the composite, indicating an outstanding char-forming capacity. The condensed phase flame retardancy played a crucial role on the fire-fighting of this composite, that is, significantly enhanced char residue (as a physical barrier) blocked the heat exchange and O2 entry, and further suppressed the combustion reaction. Additionally, the PLA-based composite showed outstanding UV-absorption property, good anti-bacterial effect, and increased hydrophilicity and crystallizability.

Abstract
To enhance char formation of flame retardant epoxy (EP) composites, carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin (CM-β-CD) is employed as an etchant for or ZIF-67 derivatives. In the early stage, etching plays a dominant role. The mismatch in size between CM-β-CD opening and ZIF-67 pore leads to the stacking of carboxyl cobalt complexes on the shell. When the reaction time is prolonged, crosslinking occurs between carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Crosslinked CM-β-CD weakens and eventually stops the etching process. Triethyl phosphate (TEP), an additive to improve flame retardancy, is also absorbed on the shell in this one-pot synthesis. Herin, the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives can impart multiple functions to MOF. This novel nanohybrid significantly improved flame retardancy of EP composites with only 2.0 wt% loading. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) were reduced by 54.8 and 46.9%, respectively. The integrated multi-element system resulted in an expanded and reinforced char layer. This study proposes a simple and precise method for controlling the structure of MOF-carbohydrate hybrids through competition between chemical reactions.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) were used as green char promoters in the formulation of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) for polymeric materials, and they could reduce the amount of usage of OPFRs and their release into the environment by forming [host:guest] inclusion complexes with them. Here, we report a systematic study on the inclusion complexes of natural CDs (α-, β-, and γ-CD) with a representative OPFR of DOPO using computational methods of molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and quantum mechanical (QM) calculations. The binding modes and energetics of [host:guest] inclusion complexes were analyzed in details. α-CD was not able to form a complete inclusion complex with DOPO, and the center of mass distance [host:guest] distance amounted to 4-5 Å. β-CD and γ-CD allowed for a deep insertion of DOPO into their hydrophobic cavities, and DOPO was able to frequently change its orientation within the γ-CD cavity. The energy decomposition analysis based on the dispersion-corrected density functional theory (sobEDAw) indicated that electrostatic, orbital, and dispersion contributions favored [host:guest] complexation, while the exchange-repulsion term showed the opposite. This work provides an in-depth understanding of using CD inclusion complexes in OPFRs formulations.

Abstract
In this work, the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was modified by a phosphazene compound to prepare a novel amorphous derivate (β-CDCP), which was combined with the ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as a synergistic flame retardant (FR) of the bio-based poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA). The effects of the APP/β-CDCP on the thermal stability, combustion behavior, pyrolysis process, fire resistance performance and crystallizability of the PLA were investigated comprehensively and in depth by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, limited oxygen index (LOI) analysis, UL-94 test, cone calorimetry measurement, TG-infrared (TG-IR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer, Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry. The PLA/5%APP/10%β-CDCP showed a highest LOI of 33.2 %, passed V-0 rating and exhibited self-extinguish phenomenon in the UL-94 test. Also, it presented a lowest peak of heat release rate, total heat release, peak of smoke production rate and total smoke release, and a highest char yield treated by cone calorimetry analysis. In addition, the 5%APP/10%β-CDCP shortened significantly crystallization time and enhanced crystallization rate of the PLA. Gas phase and intumescent condensed phase fire proofing mechanisms are proposed to elucidate enhanced fire resistance in this system in detail.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Silane (sol-gel)-based coatings have been introduced as an eco-friendly system for reducing the metals' corrosion in NaCl solutions. However, due to the lack of active protection property for this type of coatings, their modification is totally recommended for achieving durable protection properties. The present study introduces Beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a novel/effective organic nano-container for Benzimidazole (BM) encapsulation to obtain reliable active protection property via a controlled-release property. EXPERIMENTS The chemical structure of the β-CD-BM macromolecule was explored by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Besides, the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization (potentiodynamic) tests were carried out for investigating the inhibition impacts of the constructed containers. The exposed and unexposed samples' surfaces were analyzed by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS)/mapping, and Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) experiments. Also, the EIS test was conducted over the Silane-based composite film (SCF) for analyzing the anti-corrosion performance of the constructed composites. FINDINGS The EIS achievements demonstrated that by the addition of β-CD-BM complexes to the saline solution, the mild steel corrosion was mitigated by about 84%. The EIS results also displayed that the total resistance of the modified composite was enhanced from 5540 Ω.cm2 to 10967 Ω.cm2 and the intact coating provided a total resistance of 80254 Ω.cm2. The dispersion-corrected Density Functional Theory (DFT)-D explorations ascertained the inclusion capacity of benzimidazole inside the β-CD. The Monte Carlo/Molecular Dynamics (MC/MD) calculations strongly affirmed the adsorption of BM and β-CD-BM over the substrate.

Abstract
The chemistry of the host-guest complex formation has received much attention as a highly efficient approach for use to develop economical adsorbents for water purification. In the present study, the synthesis of three β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes with the oil orange SS (OOSS) azo dye as a guest molecule and their potential applications in water purification are described. The complexes were synthesized by the coprecipitation method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). FTIR and thermal analyses confirmed the encapsulation of OOSS dye within the hydrophobic cavity of β-CD. The encapsulation of hydrophobic dye inside the β-CD cavity was mainly due to the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction. The results showed that the stability of the OOSS dye had been improved after the complexation. The effect of three different compositions of the host-guest complexes was analyzed. The present study demonstrated that the hydrophobic dye could be removed from aqueous solution via inclusion complex formation. Thus, it can play a significant role in removing the highly toxic OOSS dye from the industrial effluent.

Abstract
Beta cyclodextrin (β-CD) was used for cholesterol removal from shrimp lipid using ethyl acetate and water as solvents. The cholesterol incorporating β-CD complex (β-CD–CL) was collected and β-CD recovery was performed using a β-CD–CL : ethanol mixture (1 : 15 ratio) with the aid of ultrasonication and a water bath at 55 °C for 40 min. Recycled β-CD (R-β-CD) was compared with pure β-CD (P-β-CD) for the reusability of cholesterol removal from shrimp lipid. R-β-CD showed 94% cholesterol removal, while 95% was achieved for P-β-CD. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) showed a slight decrease in the melting point of R-β-CD. Nevertheless, FTIR and NMR results revealed that functional groups and the proton spectrum of R-β-CD was negligibly altered. Fatty acid contents of treated oil were slightly higher when treated with R-β-CD than those of the lipid subjected to P-β-CD treatment. Reusability of β-CD could be achieved as confirmed by the maintained capacity in cholesterol removal and unaltered structure. Beta cyclodextrin (β-CD) used for cholesterol removal from shrimp lipid was reused after the cholesterol bound with β-CD was removed. Efficenicy of recycled β-CD was similar to pure β-CD.![]()

Abstract
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is widely applied in cables as insulation materials, which are vital for operation and control of industrial processes. However, PVC cables fires frequently occur, arousing public concern. Therefore, experimental methods are used to study flammability and flame-spread characteristics of PVC cable in this paper. Influences of cable structure and number are investigated, which is scanty in previous works. As cable core number of single cable or cable number of multiple cables rises, average flame height and width increase while the increment decreases. Formulas concerning dimensionless flame height and single cable diameter (or total width of multiple cables) are obtained. The former is negatively correlated with the latter. For single cable, convective heat transfer is dominant, and flame-spread rate decreases as cable core number increases. Cable maximum temperature, which drops first and then rises as cable core number increases, is observed in the cable core area. For multiple cable, the flame-spread rate increases as cable number increases. As the cable number rises, the length of pyrolysis and combustion zone increases while the maximum temperature of cable surface decreases. This work is beneficial to fire hazard evaluation and safety design of PVC cables.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Essential oils are poor aqueous solubility and high volatility compounds. The encapsulation of essential oils with Cyclodextrins (CDs) can protect them from adverse environmental conditions and improve their stability. Therefore, increasing the functional capabilities of essential oils when they were used as additives in pharmaceutical and food systems. Additionally, the release of active compounds is an important issue. However, there were few studies about the effect of different CDs on the release of drugs after encapsulation. Therefore, the information on the study of release models is considerably limited. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to (i) characterize the physico-chemical properties and release behavior of myrcene encapsulated in the four different shell matrices of α-CD, β-CD, γ-CD and 2-hydroxypropyl-β- cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), which were selected from the perspective of stability, and (ii) determine the release mechanism of myrcene in Inclusion Complexes (ICs). METHODS ICs of myrcene and four CDs were prepared by freeze-drying. The physico-chemical properties of ICs were fully characterized by laser diffraction particle size analyzer, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). The release behaviors of ICs at 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C were determined and described by zeroorder or first-order kinetics with the Henderson-Pabis, Peppas, Avrami and Page mathematical models. Moreover, the possible binding modes of ICs were identified with molecular modelling technique. RESULTS Firstly, the structure of Particle Size Distribution (PSD), FT-IR, DSC and SEM showed that (i) CDs could effectively encapsulate the myrcene molecules, and (ii) the release kinetics were well simulated by Avrami and Page models. Secondly, the release rates of the ICs experienced an unsteady state in the early stage, and gradually became almost constants period after 20 hours. Except that the release of myrcene in γ-CD/myrcene belonged to the first-order kinetic, the release models of the remaining three ICs belonged to diffusion mode. Thirdly, the calculated binding energies of the optimized structures for α-CD/myrcene, β-CD/myrcene, γ-CD/myrcene, and HP-β-CD/myrcene ICs were -4.28, -3.82, -4.04, and -3.72 kcal/mol, respectively. Finally, the encapsulation of myrcene with α-CD and β-CD was preferable according to the stability and release characteristics. CONCLUSION The encapsulation of myrcene was profoundly affected by the type of CDs, and the stability could be improved by complexation with suitable CDs. The binding behavior between guest and CD molecules, and the release profile of the guest molecules could be effectively explained by the kinetics parameters and molecular modelling. This study can provide an effective basis and guide for screening suitable shell matrices.

Abstract
Novel conjugates of ferrocene with uracil, 5-fluorouracil, tegafur, or acyclovir are reported. Their synthesis involved (i) the azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition or (ii) the formation of the ester linkage. For the first time, we present an in-depth insight into the supramolecular interactions between β-cyclodextrin and ferrocene-nucleobase derivatives. Spectroscopic and voltammetric analyses performed within this work suggested that the ferrocene or adamantane unit of the conjugates interacted with the β-cyclodextrin's inner cavity. The methods applied for the supramolecular studies included 1H-1H ROESY NMR, 1H NMR titration, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, fluorescence spectra titration, and 1H DOSY NMR. 1H DOSY NMR was also employed to evaluate the apparent binding constants for all the complexes. The ferrocene-acyclovir conjugate Fc-5 featured the highest apparent binding constant value among all the complexes tested.

Abstract
Nowadays, epoxy composites are elements of engineering materials and systems. Although they are known as versatile materials, epoxy resins suffer from high flammability. In this sense, flame retardancy analysis has been recognized as an undeniable requirement for developing future generations of epoxy-based systems. A considerable proportion of the literature on epoxy composites has been devoted to the use of phosphorus-based additives. Nevertheless, innovative flame retardants have coincidentally been under investigation to meet market requirements. This review paper attempts to give an overview of the research on flame retardant epoxy composites by classification of literature in terms of phosphorus (P), non-phosphorus (NP), and combinations of P/NP additives. A comprehensive set of data on cone calorimetry measurements applied on P-, NP-, and P/NP-incorporated epoxy systems was collected and treated. The performance of epoxy composites was qualitatively discussed as Poor, Good, and Excellent cases identified and distinguished by the use of the universal Flame Retardancy Index (FRI). Moreover, evaluations were rechecked by considering the UL-94 test data in four groups as V0, V1, V2, and nonrated (NR). The dimensionless FRI allowed for comparison between flame retardancy performances of epoxy composites. The results of this survey can pave the way for future innovations in developing flame-retardant additives for epoxy.

Abstract
Polymers are intrinsically flammable materials; hence, fire retardance (FR) is required in their most common applications (i.e., electronic and construction, to mention some). Recently, it has been reported that cyclodextrin (CD) and cyclodextrin derivatives are beginning to be introduced into Intumescent Fire Retardant (IFR) formulations in place of pentaerythritol, which is used in IFRs that are currently on the market. Since IFRs are of less environmental concern than their hazardous halogen containing counterparts, the use of natural origin compounds in IFRs provides a way to comply with green chemistry issues. BCD and BCD derivatives presence in IFR mixtures promotes a higher yield of blowing gases and char when polymeric materials undergo combustion. Both processes play important roles in intumescence. The key rule to obtain in insulating compact char is the good dispersion of the nanoparticles in the matrix, which can be achieved by functionalizing nanoparticles with BCD derivatives. Moreover, CD derivatives are attractive because of their nanosized structure and their ability to form inclusion complexes with many compounds used as FR components, reducing their release to the environment during their shelf life of FR items. Often, fire retardance performed by BCD and BCD derivatives accompanies other relevant properties, such as improved mechanical resistance, washability resistance, self healing ability, thermal conductivity, etc. The application of CD fire retardant additives in many polymers, such as poly(lactic acid), poly(propylene), poly(vinyl acetate), poly(methyl methacrylate), linear low density poly(ethylene), polyamides, and polyesters are comprehensively reviewed here.
