Fabrication of Core-Shell Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Nanospheres towards Hypericin via Click Polymerization

Enhancing the Mechanical Properties and Aging Resistance of 3D-Printed Polyurethane through Polydopamine and Graphene Coating

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a versatile manufacturing method widely used in various industries due to its design flexibility, rapid production, and mechanical strength. Polyurethane (PU) is a biopolymer frequently employed in 3D printing applications, but its susceptibility to UV degradation limits its durability. To address this issue, various additives, including graphene, have been explored to enhance PU properties. Graphene, a two-dimensional carbon material, possesses remarkable mechanical and electrical properties, but challenges arise in its dispersion within the polymer matrix. Surface modification techniques, like polydopamine (PDA) coating, have been introduced to improve graphene's compatibility with polymers. This study presents a method of 3D printing PU scaffolds coated with PDA and graphene for enhanced UV stability. The scaffolds were characterized through X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanical testing, scanning electron microscopy, and UV durability tests. Results showed successful PDA coating, graphene deposition, and improved mechanical properties. The PDA-graphene-modified scaffolds exhibited greater UV resistance over time, attributed to synergistic effects between PDA and graphene. These findings highlight the potential of combining PDA and graphene to enhance the stability and mechanical performance of 3D-printed PU scaffolds.

Polymeric nanomaterial strategies to encapsulate and deliver biological drugs: points to consider between methods

Biological drugs (BDs) play an increasingly irreplaceable role in treating various diseases such as cancer, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. The market share of BDs is increasingly promising. However, the effectiveness of BDs is currently limited due to challenges in efficient administration and delivery, and issues with stability and degradation. Thus, the field is using nanotechnology to overcome these limitations. Specifically, polymeric nanomaterials are common BD carriers due to their biocompatibility and ease of synthesis. Different strategies are available for BD transportation, but the use of core-shell encapsulation is preferable for BDs. This review discusses recent articles on manufacturing methods for encapsulating BDs in polymeric materials, including emulsification, nanoprecipitation, self-encapsulation and coaxial electrospraying. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are analysed and discussed. We also explore the impact of critical synthesis parameters on BD activity, such as sonication in emulsifications. Lastly, we provide a vision of future challenges and perspectives for scale-up production and clinical translation.

Selective Recognition of Gallic Acid Using Hollow Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers with Double Imprinting Surfaces

Gallic acid is widely used in the field of food and medicine due to its diversified bioactivities. The extraction method with higher specificity and efficiency is the key to separate and purify gallic acid from complex biological matrix. Herein, using self-made core-shell magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIP) with gallic acid as template, a hollow magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (HMMIP) with double imprinting/adsorption surfaces was prepared by etching the mesoporous silica intermediate layer of MMIP. The characterization and adsorption research showed that the HMMIP had larger specific surface area, higher magnetic response strength and a more stable structure, and the selectivity and saturated adsorption capacity (2.815 mmol/g at 318 K) of gallic acid on HMMIP were better than those of MMIP. Thus, in addition to MMIP, the improved HMMIP had excellent separation and purification ability to selectively extract gallic acid from complex matrix with higher specificity and efficiency.

Core-Shell Molecularly Imprinted Polymers on Magnetic Yeast for the Removal of Sulfamethoxazole from Water

In this work, magnetic yeast (MY) was produced through an in situ one-step method. Then, MY was used as the core and the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the template to produce highly selective magnetic yeast-molecularly imprinted polymers (MY@MIPs). The physicochemical properties of MY@MIPs were assessed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), specific surface area (S_BET) determination, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to compare MY@MIPs with MY and MY@NIPs (magnetic yeast-molecularly imprinted polymers without template), with MY@MIPs showing a better performance in the removal of SMX from water. Adsorption of SMX onto MY@MIPs was described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm, with maximum adsorption capacities of 77 and 24 mg g^-1 from ultrapure and wastewater, respectively. Furthermore, MY@MIPs displayed a highly selective adsorption toward SMX in the presence of other pharmaceuticals, namely diclofenac (DCF) and carbamazepine (CBZ). Finally, regeneration experiments showed that SMX adsorption decreased 21 and 34% after the first and second regeneration cycles, respectively. This work demonstrates that MY@MIPs are promising sorbent materials for the selective removal of SMX from wastewater.

Rapid and sensitive determination of neomycin and kanamycin in measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine via high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry using modified super-paramagnetic Fe3O4 nanospheres

A simple magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MDSPE) methodology based on mesoporous Fe₃O₄@ succinic acid nanospheres and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) has been developed to determine kanamycin (KNM) and neomycin (NEO) contents in Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine products. The monodispersed mesoporous Fe₃O₄ nanospheres with self-assembled carboxyl terminated shell have been prepared via a simple solvothermal method. These as-synthesized mesoporous Fe₃O₄ nanospheres showed a high magnetic saturation value (M_s = 46 emu g^-1) and large specific surface area (111.12 m² g^-1) which made them potential candidates as sorbents in magnetic solid-phase extraction. The adsorption experimental data fitted well with the Freundlich-Langmuir isotherm and followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover influential parameters on extraction efficiency were investigated and optimized. Under optimal conditions, the limits of detection for KNM and NEO were 1.0 and 0.1 ng mL^-1, respectively. Recovery assessments using real samples exhibited recoveries in the range of 96.0 ± 4.3 to 101.5 ± 7.1 %, with relative standard deviations of <10.7% (for intra- day) and <14.6% (for inter- day). The proposed method was successfully applied for different spiked and un-spiked MMR vaccine samples. The presented extraction method provides a fast, selective, robust and practical platform for the detection of KNM and NEO in MMR vaccine samples.

Molecularly imprinted polymers-A closer look at the control polymer used in determining the imprinting effect: A mini review

Molecular recognition displayed by naturally occurring receptors has continued to inspire new innovations aimed at developing systems that can mimic this natural phenomenon. Since 1930s, a technology called molecular imprinting for producing biomimetic receptors has been in place. In this technology, tailor made binding sites that selectively bind a given target analyte (also called template) are incorporated in a polymer matrix by polymerizing functional monomers and cross-linking monomers around a target analyte followed by removal of the analyte to leave behind cavities specific to the analyte. The success of the imprinting process is defined by two main figures of merit, that is, the imprinting factor, and selectivity, which are determined by comparing the amount of target analyte or structural analogue bound by the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and the nonimprinted polymer (NIP). NIP is a control synthesized alongside the MIP but in the absence of the template. However, questions arise on whether these figures of merit are reliable measures of the imprinting effect because of the significant differences between the MIP and the NIP in terms of their physical and chemical characteristics. Therefore, this review critically looks into this subject, with a view of defining the best approaches for determining the imprinting effect.

Electrospun Environment Remediation Nanofibers Using Unspinnable Liquids as the Sheath Fluids: A Review

Electrospinning, as a promising platform in multidisciplinary engineering over the past two decades, has overcome major challenges and has achieved remarkable breakthroughs in a wide variety of fields such as energy, environmental, and pharmaceutics. However, as a facile and cost-effective approach, its capability of creating nanofibers is still strongly limited by the numbers of treatable fluids. Most recently, more and more efforts have been spent on the treatments of liquids without electrospinnability using multifluid working processes. These unspinnable liquids, although have no electrospinnability themselves, can be converted into nanofibers when they are electrospun with an electrospinnable fluid. Among all sorts of multifluid electrospinning methods, coaxial electrospinning is the most fundamental one. In this review, the principle of modified coaxial electrospinning, in which unspinnable liquids are explored as the sheath working fluids, is introduced. Meanwhile, several typical examples are summarized, in which electrospun nanofibers aimed for the environment remediation were prepared using the modified coaxial electrospinning. Based on the exploration of unspinnable liquids, the present review opens a way for generating complex functional nanostructures from other kinds of multifluid electrospinning methods.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Cell Recognition

Since their conception 50 years ago, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have seen extensive development both in terms of synthetic routes and applications. Cells are perhaps the most challenging target for molecular imprinting. Although early work was based almost entirely around microprinting methods, recent developments have shifted towards epitope imprinting to generate MIP nanoparticles (NPs). Simultaneously, the development of techniques such as solid phase MIP synthesis has solved many historic issues of MIP production. This review briefly describes various approaches used in cell imprinting with a focus on applications of the created materials in imaging, drug delivery, diagnostics, and tissue engineering.
