Abstract
In the realization of the goal of circular economy, cellulose as one of sustainable biomass resources, have attracted much attention because of their abundant sources, biodegradability and renewability. However, the mechanical and waterproof performance of cellulose-based materials are usually not satisfying, which limits their high-value utilization. In this study, cellulose membrane with high-performance from the aspects of mechanical properties, water-resistance ability, oxygen barrier capacity and biodegradability, was prepared from bleached hardwood pulp (HBKP) in a AlCl3/ZnCl2/H2O solution. The AlCl3/ZnCl2/H2O acted as both solvent and catalyst to dissolve cellulose and facilitate the chemical crosslinking of epichlorohydrin (EPI) with cellulose, thus improved the overall performance of the obtained cellulose membrane. The addition sequence, amount and crosslinking time of EPI during chemical crosslinking had important effects on the properties of the membranes. When 7 wt% EPI was crosslinked for 24 h, the tensile stress reached 133 MPa and the strain reached 17 %. Moreover, the membrane had excellent oxygen insulation down to (1.1 ± 0.31) × 10-4 cm3/m2·d·Pa, and good water-resistance ability, no obvious swelling behavior after 450 days of immersion in distilled water. Furthermore, the membrane could be degraded by microorganisms in about 20 days. This cellulose-based membrane offers a sustainable and biodegradable packaging material.

Abstract
Herein, a novel magnetic adsorbent (BC/AA/MN@Fe3O4) was successfully prepared from waste bamboo fiber tissue and montmorillonite, and subsequently applied for the highly selective removal of malachite green (MG, removal efficiency = 97.3 %) from the mixed dye solution of MG with methyl orange (MO, removal efficiency = 4.5 %). The magnetic adsorbent has a high porosity with abundant mesopores. In the single dye MG solution, the adsorbent could effectively remove MG over a wide pH range from 4 to 10, and the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) was 2282.3 mg/g. Moreover, the magnetic adsorbent could remove MG from various solutions including mixed dye solution, high salinity solution, and real river water dye solution. The thermodynamic results proved that the adsorption process of MG was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption of MG was due to the comprehensive effects of electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding interactions and ions exchange, between the adsorbent and MG. Furthermore, the BC/AA/MN@Fe3O4 exhibited an excellent reusability with adsorption efficiency above 53.4 % after five consecutive cycles. Therefore, the prepared magnetic nanocellulose-based adsorbent was expected to be a promising material for highly selective adsorption and separation of MG from mixed dye solution.

Abstract
Here, we propose a green and sustainable 3D porous aerogel based on citrus peel (CP), chitosan (CS), and bentonite (BT). This aerogel is prepared through a simple sol-gel and freeze-drying process and is designed for efficient capture of Cu(II) ions from water matrices. CCBA-2, with its abundance of active binding sites, exhibits an impressive Cu(II) adsorption yield of 861.58 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics follow the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. In the presence of coexisting mixed-metal ions, CCBA-2 demonstrates a significantly higher selectivity coefficient (KdCu = 1138.5) for removing Cu(II) ions compared to other toxic metal ions. Furthermore, the adsorption of Cu(II) ions by CCBA-2 is not significantly affected by coexisting cations/anions, ionic strength, organic matter, or different water matrices. Dynamic fixed-bed column experiments show that the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions reaches 377.4 mg/g, and the Yoon-Nelson model accurately describes the adsorption process and breakthrough curve. Through experiments, FTIR, and XPS analyses, we propose a reasonable binding mechanism between CCBA-2 and metal cations, involving electrostatic attraction and chemical chelation between Cu(II) and the functional groups of the aerogel. CCBA-2 saturated with Cu(II) ions can be successfully regenerated by elution with 1 M HNO3, with only a slight decrease in adsorption efficiency (5.3%) after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, CCBA-2 offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly material that can be considered as a viable alternative for the green and efficient removal of toxic Cu(II) ions from wastewater.

Abstract
In recent years, the scarcity of pure water resources has received a lot of attention from society because of the increasing amount of pollution from industrial waste. It is very important to use low-cost adsorbents with high-adsorption performance to reduce water pollution. In this work, a gel adsorbent with a high-adsorption performance on methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II) was prepared from bamboo nanocellulose (BCNF) (derived from waste bamboo paper) and montmorillonite nanosheet (MMTNS) cross-linked by polyethyleneimine (PEI). The resulting gel adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS), etc. The results indicated that the MB and Cu(II) adsorption capacities of the resulting gel adsorbent increased with the solution pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature before equilibrium. The adsorption processes of MB and Cu(II) fitted well with the fractal-like pseudo-second-order model. The maximal adsorption capacities on MB and Cu(II) calculated by the Sips model were 361.9 and 254.6 mg/g, respectively. The removal of MB and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions mainly included electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, hydrogen bonding interaction, etc. These results suggest that the resulting gel adsorbent is an ideal material for the removal of MB and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Development of efficient adsorbents to inorganic anions as a solid phase extraction (SPE) material is highly desirable for chromatographic analysis and pollution control. In this work we developed a new hybrid cationic microcrystalline cellulose aerogel composite. Cationic cetylpyridinium imbedded montmorillonite (CPC-MT) was uniformly entrapped in microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) to enhance anionic adsorption efficiency and mechanical stability. The developed CPC-MT@MCC aerogel was used as an SPE adsorbent for anions from dairy wastewater by coupling with ion-column chromatography. Further quaternized CPC-MT@MCC aerogel (CPC-MT@QMCC) showed unique low density (10.6 mg cm-3), large specific surface area (320 m2 g-1), porosity 70%, 800 mg g-1 nitrate adsorption capacity within 60 min and ease of elution in alkaline solutions. The CPC-MT@QMCC aerogel showed efficient regeneration and reuse performances for up to 10 cycles. More importantly, a dynamic binding efficiency of 710 mg g-1 highlights its excellent performance for practical applications. 96% of nitrate anion from environmental manure wastewater samples were adsorbed with 98.7% recovery. A good linear relationship was obtained in the range of 0.01-10 mg L-1 and the limits of detection was 0.5 mg L-1 using CPC-MT@QMCC aerogel as a preconcentration column. The successful synthesis of such intriguing and economic CPC-MT@QMCC aerogel may provide a promising matrix for high-performance and high efficiency chromatographic media.

Abstract
Nowadays, the problem of oil spill and organic solvent pollution has become more and more serious, and developing a green and efficient treatment method has become a research hotspot. Herein, the preparation of porous super‐hydrophobic aerogel by directional freezing with cellulose nanofibre (CNF) as the base material, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the cross‐linking agent and montmorillonite (MMT) as the modifier and filler, followed by hydrophobic treatment with chemical vapour deposition is reported. The prepared composite aerogel presented three‐dimensional inter‐perforation network structure, low density (26.52 mg⋅cm−3), high porosity (96.1 %) and good hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 140°). Notably, the composite aerogel has a good adsorption effect on different oils and organic solutions, and its adsorption capacity can reach 40–68 times of its initial weight. After complete adsorption, the aerogel could be easily collected. More importantly, the composite aerogel had high strength, whose compressive stress at 70 % strain reached 0.15 MPa and could bear over 1290 times its weight without deformation after 2 weeks. A new, green, simple and efficient absorbent for the adsorption of oils and organic solvents is provided.

Abstract
Hybrid nanocellulose-based foams are a desirable class of low-density and porous materials for their potential in many applications. This study aims at characterizing and understanding the structure-properties relationship of four foam formulations prepared from combinations of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and kaolin-microfibrillated cellulose composite. All the foams were crosslinked with a polyamide-epichlorohydrin crosslinker (Polycup) to impart stability under wet conditions without additional functionalization. Foams containing 25 wt% kaolin exhibited excellent shape recovery promoted by a higher load of crosslinker (5 wt%), and superior compressive properties. The addition of CNC at 33.3 wt% and 50 wt% did not seem to enhance the properties of the foam and also reduced the specific surface area. A preliminary comparative study between the four tested formulations was conducted to assess the feasibility of the foam as an adsorbent of methylene blue dye.

Abstract
Chitosan films were used to remove heavy oil from connate water, deionized water, and seawater. In this research, chitosan–starch films were modified with natural extracts from cranberry, blueberry, beetroot, pomegranate, oregano, pitaya, and grape. These biodegradable, low-cost, eco-friendly materials show an important oil sorption capacity from different water conditions. It was observed that the sorption capacity has a clear correlation with the extract type, quantity, and water pH. In order to understand the physical and chemical properties of the films, they were analyzed according to their apparent density, water content, solubility, and swelling degree by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC–MS), and the determination of surface area using the Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) method. The results indicate that chitosan–starch films modified with natural extracts can be successfully applied for environmental issues such as oil spill remedy.

Abstract
In this study, composite aerogels with excellent mechanical properties were prepared by using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as raw materials, with carboxylic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcement. By controlling the mass fraction of CNTs, composite aerogels with different CNTs were prepared, and the surface morphology, specific surface area, compressive modulus, density and adsorption capacities towards different oils were studied. Compared to the pure CMC aerogel, the specific surface areas of CMC/CNTs were decreased because of the agglomeration of CNTs. However, the densities of composite aerogels were lower than pure CMC aerogel. This is because the CNTs were first dispersed in water and then added to CMC solution. The results indicated that it was easy for the low CMC initial concentration to be converted to low density aerogel. The compressive modulus was increased from 0.3 MPa of pure CMC aerogel to 0.5 MPa of 5 wt % CMC/CNTs aerogel. Meanwhile, the prepared aerogels showed promising properties as the adsorption materials. Because of the high viscosity, liquid possesses strong adhesion to the pore wall, the adsorption capacity of the CMC aerogel to the liquid increases as the viscosity of the liquid increases.
