Polymerization Enhancers for Cyanoacrylate Skin Adhesive

Cyanoacrylate glues are a renowned synthetic tissue sealant that cures rapidly through polymerization at room temperature, felicitating medical glues to treat skin wounds and surgical openings. Despite a wide range of cyanoacrylates available, only 2-octyl cyanoacrylates (OCA) provides the best biocompatibility. In this study, the polymerization and adhesive properties of 2-octyl cyanoacrylates (OCA) are explored in the presence of a highly biocompatible and biochemically inert polymer, poly(ethylene glycol) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PEG-POSS). The effect of PEG-POSS on the polymerization of OCA is examined on a plastic surface and over pig skin. A peel-test is performed to evaluate the strength of OCA adhesive properties between two pieces of pig skin samples. Additionally, thin films of OCA are prepared using different fillers and evaluated for tear test. The results reveal that when applied on the plastic or pig skin, PEG-POSS initiated polymerization in OCA yields a high molecular weight OCA polymer with much better adhesive properties compared to commercially available cyanoacrylate adhesives. The relative change in the molecular weights of OCA compared to commercially available cyanoacrylate bioadhesives such as Dermaflex is much higher. The pig skin peeling test shows that OCA needs higher peeling force than Dermaflex.

Chlorine-Functional Silsesquioxanes (POSS-Cl) as Effective Flame Retardants and Reinforcing Additives for Rigid Polyurethane Foams

The subject of the research was the production of silsesquioxane modified rigid polyurethane (PUR) foams (POSS-Cl) with chlorine functional groups (chlorobenzyl, chloropropyl, chlorobenzylethyl) characterized by reduced flammability. The foams were prepared in a one-step additive polymerization reaction of isocyanates with polyols, and the POSS modifier was added to the reaction system in an amount of 2 wt.% polyol. The influence of POSS was analyzed by performing a series of tests, such as determination of the kinetics of foam growth, determination of apparent density, and structure analysis. Compressive strength, three-point bending strength, hardness, and shape stability at reduced and elevated temperatures were tested, and the hydrophobicity of the surface was determined. The most important measurement was the determination of the thermal stability (TGA) and the flammability of the modified systems using a cone calorimeter. The obtained results, after comparing with the results for unmodified foam, showed a large influence of POSS modifiers on the functional properties, especially thermal and fire-retardant, of the obtained PUR-POSS-Cl systems.

Synthesis of Monoacryloxypropyl-POSS-based Hybrid Epoxyacrylate Copolymers and Their Application in Thermally Curable Structural Self-Adhesive Tapes

New organic-inorganic hybrid copolymers (EA-POSSs) based on butyl acrylate, glycidyl methacylate, hydroxybutyl acrylate, acryloiloxybenzophenone and acryloxypropyl-heptaisobutyl-POSS (A-POSS) were prepared via free-radical solution polymerization (FRP) and applied as a component of thermally curable structural self-adhesive tapes (SATs). The EA-POSS with 0.25, 0.5 or 1 mol % of A-POSS exhibited significantly higher dynamic viscosity (ca. +104%), Mw (+61%) and polydispersity (+109%; measured using gel permeation chromatography) as well as lower Tg value (-16 °C) in relation to the A-POSS-free copolymer (EA-0). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements (one glass transition process) confirmed statistic chain structure of the EA-POSS materials. Replacement of EA-0 by the EA-POSS copolymers in a SATs recipe caused simultaneous improvement of their self-adhesive features, i.e., adhesion (+70%), tack (+21%) and cohesion (+1590%). Moreover, the POSS-based copolymers improved the shear strength of thermally cured Al/SAT/Al overlap joints; the best mechanical resistance (before and after accelerated ageing tests) was observed for the sample containing 0.5 mol % of A-POSS (an increment range of 50-294% in relation to the A-POSS-free joints). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed markedly improved thermal stability of the A-POSS-based SATs as well.

POSS Compounds as Modifiers for Rigid Polyurethane Foams (Composites)

Three types of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) with different functional active groups were used to modify rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs). Aminopropylisobutyl-POSS (AP-POSS), trisilanoisobutyl-POSS (TS-POSS) and octa(3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyldimethylsiloxy-POSS (OH-POSS) were added in an amount of 0.5 wt.% of the polyol weight. The characteristics of fillers including the size of particles, evaluation of the dispersion of particles and their effect on the viscosity of the polyol premixes were performed. Next, the obtained foams were evaluated by their processing parameters, morphology (Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis, SEM), mechanical properties (compressive test, three-point bending test, impact strength), viscoelastic behavior (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis, DMA), thermal properties (Thermogravimetric Analysis, TGA, thermal conductivity) and application properties (contact angle, water absorption). The results showed that the morphology of modified foams is significantly affected by the fillers typology, which resulted in inhomogeneous, irregular, large cell shapes and further affected the physical and mechanical properties of the resulting materials. RPUFs modified with AP-POSS represent better mechanical properties compared to the RPUFs modified with other POSS.
