Recent developments in the application of membrane separation technology and its challenges in oil-water separation: A review

In the development and production process of domestic and foreign oil fields, large amounts of oil-bearing wastewater with complex compositions containing toxic and harmful pollutants are generated. These oil-bearing wastewaters will cause serious environmental pollution if they are not effectively treated before discharge. Among these wastewaters, the oily sewage produced in the process of oilfield exploitation has the largest content of oil-water emulsion. In order to solve the problem of oil-water separation of oily sewage, the paper summarizes the research of many scholars in many aspects, such as the use of physical and chemical methods such as air flotation and flocculation, or the use of mechanical methods such as centrifuges and oil booms for sewage treatment. Comprehensive analysis shows that among these oil-water separation methods, membrane separation technology has higher separation efficiency in the separation of general oil-water emulsions than other methods and also exhibits a better separation effect for stable emulsions, which has a broader application prospect for future developments. To present the characteristics of different types of membranes more intuitively, this paper describes the applicable conditions and characteristics of various types of membranes in detail, summarizes the shortcomings of existing membrane separation technologies, and offers prospects for future research directions.

Photocatalytic VOCs Degradation Efficiency of Polypropylene Membranes by Incorporation of TiO2 Nanoparticles

A class of serious environmental contaminants related to air, namely volatile organic compounds (VOCs), has currently attracted global attention. The present study aims to remove harmful VOCs using as-prepared polypropylene membrane + TiO₂ nanoparticles (PPM + TiO₂ NPs) via the photocatalytic gas bag A method under UV light irradiation. Here, formaldehyde was used as the target VOC. The PPM + TiO₂ NPs material was systematically characterized using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, including field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. These results confirm the successful preparation of PPM + TiO₂ NPs, which can be applied to the degradation of VOCs. Photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde gas reached 70% within 1 h of UV illumination. The energy bandgap and photoluminescence intensity reductions are responsible for the improved photocatalytic activity. These characteristics increase the charge transport while decreasing the recombination of electron-hole pairs.

pH-responsive nonwoven fabric with reversibly wettability for controllable oil-water separation and heavy metal removal

Removal of organic solvents and heavy metals in effluents is of great significance to environmental pollution control and ecological civilization construction. pH-responsive materials have unique advantages in treating complicated oily wastewater. In this work, an intelligent pH-responsive nonwoven fabric with excellent reversible wettability was prepared. The pH-sensitive polymer was synthesized by free radical polymerization (FRP) technique, then dipped with SiO₂ on PP fabric. The particular molecular structure of poly (dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) enabled the fabric surface to switch wettability rapidly between hydrophilic/underwater oleophobic and oleophobic/hydrophobic under pH stimulus and exhibit controllable selective separation of various oil/water mixtures. Furthermore, the fabric removed Pb²⁺ efficiently under a wide pH range. The experimetal results showed that the separation flux reached 19,229 ± 1656.43 L-h^-1-m^-2 for water and 19,342 ± 1796.77 L-m^-2-h^-1 for n-hexane. Besides, the obtained fabric effectively realized the separation and collection process of complex ternary mixtures. The fabric removed Pb²⁺ in solutions with efficiency up to 90.83%. After immersing in acid and alkali solutions for 24 h, no significant damage to the surface wettability. This economical and intelligent fabric is able to meet the different separation purposes of industrial wastewaters with complex compositions.

Influence of Modified Carbon Black on Nylon 6 Nonwoven Fabric and Performance as Adsorbent Material

The number of chronic kidney disease (CKD) persons continues to rise in Mexico. They require renal replacement therapy, and in the absence of it, hemodialysis is the major option for their survival. The uremic toxins present in the blood are removed by hemodialysis, which involve membranes. In this study, nonwoven fabrics with modified carbon black nanoparticles in a matrix polymer of Nylon 6 were obtained and evaluated as an adsorbent material of uremic toxins. All nonwoven fabrics were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM, and contact angle measurements and were evaluated as an adsorbent material for the urea toxin and as an albumin retainer. The findings suggest their potential application as a hemodialysis membrane. Nanocomposites had a higher hydrophilic characteristic compared to pure Nylon 6. The average diameter size of the fibers was in the range of 5 to 50 μm. All nanocomposites nonwoven fabrics showed high removal percentages of inulin in a range of 80-85% at 15 min of contact. Most Ny6 Zytel/CB nanocomposites showed a high percentage of urea removal (80 to 90%).

Numerical Analysis of Fiber/Air-Coupling Field for Annular Jet

Melt-blowing technology is an important method for directly preparing micro-nanofiber materials by drawing polymer melts with high temperature and high velocity air flow. During the drawing process, the melt-blowing fiber not only undergoes a phase change, but also has an extremely complex coupling effect with the drawing airflow. Therefore, in the numerical calculation of the flow field, the existence of melt-blowing fibers is often ignored. In this paper, based on the volume of fluid method, a numerical study of the flexible fiber/air-coupling flow field of an annular melt-blowing die is carried out with the aid of computational fluid dynamics software. The results show that the pressure distribution in the different central symmetry planes of the ring die at the same time was basically the same. However, the velocity distribution may have been different; the velocity on the spinning line varied with time; the pressure changes on the spinning line were small; and velocity fluctuations around the spinning line could cause whiplash of the fibers.

An Overview of Recent Progress in Nanofiber Membranes for Oily Wastewater Treatment

Oil separation from water becomes a challenging issue in industries, especially when large volumes of stable oil/water emulsion are discharged. The present short review offers an overview of the recent developments in the nanofiber membranes used in oily wastewater treatment. This review notes that nanofiber membranes can efficiently separate the free-floating oil, dispersed oil and emulsified oil droplets. The highly interconnected pore structure nanofiber membrane and its modified wettability can enhance the permeation flux and reduce the fouling. The nanofiber membrane is an efficient separator for liquid-liquid with different densities, which can act as a rejector of either oil or water and a coalescer of oil droplets. The present paper focuses on nanofiber membranes' production techniques, nanofiber membranes' modification for flux and separation efficiency improvement, and the future direction of research, especially for practical developments.

Facile Preparation of Hydrophobic PLA/PBE Micro-Nanofiber Fabrics via the Melt-Blown Process for High-Efficacy Oil/Water Separation

Polylactic acid (PLA) micro-nanofiber fabrics with a large specific surface area and excellent biodegradability are commonly used in oil/water separation; however, challenges remain due to their poor mechanical properties. Herein, a thermoplastic polylactic acid/propylene-based elastomer (PLA/PBE) polymer was prepared by blending PLA with PBE. Then, PLA/PBE micro-nanofiber fabrics were successfully prepared using a melt-blown process. The results show that the PLA/PBE micro-nanofiber fabric has a three-dimensional porous structure, improving the thermal stability and fluidity of the PLA/PBE blended polymers. The PLA/PBE micro-nanofiber fabric demonstrated a significantly reduced average fiber diameter and an enhanced breaking strength. Moreover, the water contact angle of the prepared samples is 134°, which suggests a hydrophobic capacity. The oil absorption rate of the fabric can reach 10.34, demonstrating excellent oil/water separation performance. The successful preparation of PLA/PBE micro-nanofiber fabrics using our new method paves the way for the large-scale production of promising candidates for high-efficacy oil/water separation applications.

Modeling the Triboelectric Behaviors of Elastomeric Nonwoven Fabrics

Theoretical modeling of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is fundamental to their performance optimization, since it can provide useful guidance on the material selection, structure design, and parameter control of relevant systems. Built on the theoretical model of film-based TENGs, here, an analytical model is introduced for conductor-to-dielectric contact-mode nonwoven-based TENGs, which copes with the unique hierarchical structure of nonwovens and details the correlation between the triboelectric output (maximum transferred charge density) and nonwoven structural parameters (thickness, solidity, and average fiber diameter). A series of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene nonwoven samples are fabricated through a melt-blowing process to map nonwoven structural features within certain ranges, while an ion-injection protocol is adopted to quantify the triboelectric output with superior consistency and reproducibility. With a database containing structural features and triboelectric output of 43 nonwoven samples, a good model fitting is achieved via nonlinear regression analysis in Python, which also shows good predictive power and suggests the existing of tribo-output maxima at a specific thickness, solidity, or average fiber diameter when other structural parameters are fixed. The model is also successfully applied to a group of polypropylene meltblown nonwovens, which verifies its universality on meltblown-nonwoven-based TENGs.

In situ growth polydopamine decorated polypropylen melt-blown membrane for highly efficient oil/water separation

The removal of organic pollutants from water is highly desired because of the development of industrial and social economy. Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membranes are emerging materials for effective oil/water separation. In this paper, superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic polypropylene (PP) melt-blown membranes were prepared through melt-blown and in situ growth method, achieving highly efficient oil/water separation. After in situ growth, polydopamine (PDA) grows on the surface of PP fibers, and the addition of coupling agent (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, APTES) can improve the stability of the membrane in harsh environments (1 M HCl, 1 M NaOH, 1 M NaCl). The PDA/APTES@PP membrane could dramatically enhance the wetting (water contact angle ∼0, underwater oil contact angle∼154°) compare with the pristine PP melt-blown membrane (water contact angle ∼130°, underwater oil contact angle ∼0). Moreover, the filtration performance is at a high level (∼99%). The behaviors are comparable or even superior to the typical reported results in the references (such as the mussel-inspired superhydrophilic PVDF membrane and copper mesh). This method provides a facile route to prepared multi-functional membrane for highly efficiency oil/water separation and industrial oily wastewater remediation.

Bioinspired design of underwater superoleophobic Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/ polyacrylonitrile/TiO2 nanofibrous membranes for highly efficient oil/water separation and photocatalysis

Inspired by fish scales, this study prepares a thermo-responsive underwater oleophobic PNIPAM/PAN/TiO₂ nanofibrous membranes by traditional electrospinning technique using poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Thermal properties, mechanical properties, surface chemical composition, wettability, photocatalysis, and oil/water separation of PNIPAM/PAN/TiO₂ membrane are explored compared to pure PNIPAM membrane. Result reveals that PAN/TiO₂ compounds make PNIPAM membrane with a smaller fiber diameter of 141 nm and high tensile stress of 7.4 MPa, and also decompose 98% of rhodamine B after UV light radiation. This bioinspired design structure endows the membrane with superhydrophilicity with a low water contact angle, and underwater superoleophobicity with a high oil contact angle of 157° (petroleum ether) and 151° (dichloromethane). This membrane can efficiency separate oil/water mixture with a high separation efficiency. Moreover, the resultant PNIPAM/PAN/TiO₂ membrane has the bionic fish scale structure, and has wettability respond at lower critical solution temperature making the water flux decreased from 10013 ± 367 L m^-2·h^-1 to 7713 ± 324 L m^-2·h^-1, and thus has a potential to be used in purification of reclaimed water and separation of oil from water.

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) Investigation of the Turbulent Airflow in Slot-Die Melt Blowing

In order to explore the forming mechanism of the fiber whipping motion in slot-die melt blowing, the turbulent airflow in slot-die melt blowing was measured online with the approach of the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. The PIV results visualized the structure of the turbulent airflow and provided the distributions of air velocity components (v_x, v_y, and v_z). Moreover, the PIV results also demonstrated the evolutive process of turbulent airflow at successive time instants. By comparing the characteristics of the turbulent airflow with the fiber whipping path, the PIV results provide a preliminary explanation for the specific fiber whipping motion in slot-die melt blowing.

Influence of Organo-Sepiolite on the Morphological, Mechanical, and Rheological Properties of PP/ABS Blends

To improve the poor impact toughness of polypropylene (PP), organo-sepiolite (O-Sep) filled 80/20 (w/w) polypropylene/poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (PP/ABS) nanocomposites were fabricated. The contents of O-Sep were correlated with the morphological, mechanical, and rheological behavior of PP/ABS/O-Sep blends. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to study the morphology and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was applied to study the thermal stability. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were applied to study the crystallinity. The obtained results show that O-Sep enhanced the dispersion of ABS in the PP matrix and increased the crystallinity of blends. The rheological results show that O-Sep could increase the viscosity, storage modulus, and loss modulus of blends. Moreover, the mechanical behavior shows that O-Sep (at proper content) simultaneously increased the tensile modulus, flexural modulus, and impact strength of PP/ABS/O-Sep blends.
